Title: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: Daniish on 2011-12-14 00:10:19
[Daniish's Tutorial]
Easy installing mods into Final Fantasy VII with Bootleg

First of all you will need to BUY FF7 (English Version) if you don't have it.
For Example at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-VII-Pc/dp/B00000DMAA)

DOING A MAXIMUN INSTALLATION OF FF7 IS A MUST!

Why US Version?
Bootleg does not support multi language at the moment. If you want to take the risk, you can, and it will work, but I will tell you now, do not cry if you have many crashes, because as I told you before it is supposed to be used on the English Version.

Works in any Windows?
Bootleg mods should work on Windows XP/VISTA/7 (32 & 62 Bits). You should not have any problems!

Free Space needed:
The installation requires a minimum 16GB of free space during setup.
The final installation is 7GB to 9GB depending on mod selection.

Well... Lets the tutorial begin!

1.-Download Bootleg (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12008.0) last version (All credits to PitBrat & VGR)

2.-Open "Bootleg0036.rar" and extract it wherever you want.
(Example)

3.- After you extracted it;

(Thanks PitBrat)
Set Bootleg.exe to run as Administrator:
    Right Click on Bootleg.exe
    Select Properties
    Go to the Compatibility Tab
Check Run this program as an administrator
    APPLY

Now to start Bootleg, open BFE.exe

4.-Lets set up how do we want our FFVII.

You can set up your FF7 manually or use a preset clicking on "Presets" at the top bar.(I recommend clicking a Preset and then if you don't like something remove or change it, like I will show you)

I Like to use the "Full" preset.

Original Full preset.

Then I change things that I dislike.
The arrows says what I have added/removed comparing with the original full preset.
(Anyway this modifies are up to you, this is just what I do suggest you)

5.- Now click at the top bar "File --> Mod List".

6.- You will see a big list with the supported mods of Bootleg, with their original files names:

Why each file have different color?
GREEN: Files that are in this color are the mods that you already have.

|||||YELLOW: Files that are in this color are the mods that you do not require with the configuration you have set.

RED: Files that are in this color are the mods that you must have., you should not press "Run Bootleg" if you have any mod with this color.

7.- As you can see we do not have anything on green, that is because we have not downloaded any mods yet. Now take a look on the right of each file there is a link, each one is for downloading each mod.
You can also download them using this thread: The Big List of Mods (Credits: PitBrat) (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12503.msg173800)

START DOWNLOADING ALL THE MODS THAT ARE COLORED IN RED !!

- TIPS:

8.- Now that you have downloaded all the files that are red colored.

Your folder should look similar to this:

And the mod list that is in "File --> Mod List" similar to this:
...

If you have something similar to the above Mod List screenshot, you are ready for the installation step.

9.- Be sure the "Locations" at the bottom part, are right! (Tell me if this needs more explanation)

10.- Now you are ready!! Click the red "Run Bootleg" button at the right!

11.- Good job, you should now be installing full mods into FFVII doing almost nothing!

I will continue the guide if I see that it's needed.! (It's most likely that I will continue it)

Credits:
- All credits to their respective creators of each mod.

This tutorial doesn't make any sense. You say to download all mods in red yet there are multiple versions of HQ movies in red. Also, what does this mean? "RED: Files that are in this color are the mods that you must have., you should not press "Run Bootleg" if you have any mod with this color.

Some options in Bootleg use a customized selection of FMV's from the various mods.
Multiple FMV mods are required to replace every FMV with the best new version.
There are also options to install the standard mods without customization.

If any mods are still listed in RED, you should not press "RUN BOOTLEG" as this is a warning that files are missing.

Thanks for this tool.  I haven't played this game in years, and I'm excited to try again. :)

My only experience with batch modding like this is with Baldur's Gate 2, so I'm a bit new, but please bear with me:

1. I've found that the ModList lists mods as "detected" even if the download did not occur correctly.  Namely, FacePalmer3,7-9 are listed as found even though they are much smaller than the other FacePalmer parts.  Should I worry about this (i.e. the possibility that more than the obvious downloads have errors)?  If so, is there a tool I can use to check that the download sizes are all correct?

2. At least one download (FFVIIRemix_Installer_etcetc) is not available because btjunkie is no longer up.  Is this available elsewhere?

Thank you for your help.  Let me know if I should post this elsewhere. :)

In other words, it appears that failed

If a file with the name is in the directory, it detects it. It would take too much rewriting for very little benefit.

Is a pdf/text file available with correct download sizes such that I can manually check?

You can check the size of the download before downloading. Otherwise, no.

One more follow-up.

Both "enhanced movies" file mod downloads link me to a mediafire page listing four files:

ff7[...]part1.exe
ff7[...]part2.rar
ff7[...]part4.rar
ff7[...]part5.rar

However, Modlist requests:

ff7_enhanced_movies_1.zip
ff7_enhanced_movies_2.zip

It's not clear to me how the former set of files map onto the latter set (or whether a "part3" is missing).

This is the last mod needed other than filesize-checking. :)

Links were broken during the transition from megaupload.
The Big List of FF7 Mods (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12503.msg173799#msg173799) might have a working link to the required files.

I have bith the 1280 sharp and the high res movies in with my mods, was just wondering should i copy them into my movies folder or is it automatic?

Bootleg installs movies automatically based on your FMV selection in BFE.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: Iecerint on 2012-02-08 04:07:36
OK, so, I'm having a little bit of a problem.

I checked every file manually and replaced all the mods that were half-downloaded.  Everything was 100% set-up correctly.

When I ran bootleg, it aborted, and now my Final Fantasy VII folder (prior at C:/Games/) is gone.  I'm pretty sure it was permanently deleted, too, because my free space on the C:/ drive jumped from 50-some GB to 60-some GB.

Does it sound like an understandable error occurred, or...?

EDITN: 100% solved ^^~

I assume I can safely turn anti-virus back on after successful patching, or do I need to make a manual exception?

uhhh why is it that i dont have 0. my rebuilded models.rar  in the bootleg supported mods?
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: PitBrat on 2012-02-09 15:59:43
The rebuilded models are included with Bootleg 0037.
You no longer need to download those models separately.
There are additional mods that are now integrated with the Bootleg Configurator: Squallff8_Final_PRP_Models.rar, Vincent's Boots.rar, Models.7z, HQMBV2 - Classic Buster.rar, Classic Models.7z, Multi CTRL+F5-F8.zip, Multi DLL Loader (put DLLs in LOADR folder).zip, Kleyon's T&M HQ Barret AM Canon Battle.rar, Kleyon's T&M Barret Field.rar, New_Prelude.zip, potion slayers.zip.

First let me say Thank you all for making FF VII playable on current systems.

I downloaded Bootleg 0037 and noticed the following error in it (before use)
the link for FL-BSE v0.1.1 UPD will redirect you to the download for FL-BSE v0.1
and vice versa.

i hope you find this information usefull for future updates to the program.

*NOTE*
When you are ready to start playing after your install
check and make sure that compatibility is not set to win 98
as discussed in this topic http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12184.0
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: PitBrat on 2012-02-11 22:41:50
Some systems require Win98 compatibility, some don't care and others won't run with Win98 compatibility.
Currently Win98 is set on because it seems to work with the most systems.
Are there a lot of people who have to turn Win98 compatibility off?
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: UGerstl on 2012-02-12 16:00:38
@PitBrat: When you are using the compatibility mode, you can use only one CPU.
This command start/affinity 3 does not work then.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: PitBrat on 2012-02-12 21:40:30
I've heard that running FF7 on multiple CPU's provides no performance benefit with Aali's current driver and might increase instability.

Does anyone have actual data suggesting that using multiple CPU's with FF7 actually increases the games performance?

Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: Bosola on 2012-02-12 23:38:12
No. Because the game isn't multi-threaded, so can't exploit multiple CPUs. Anyone claiming otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: UGerstl on 2012-02-13 01:32:00
@Bosola: Please test these commands and then be surprised

Code: [Select]
start /min              /D "D:\Games\Final Fantasy 7\FF7Music" FF7Music.exe
start /wait /affinity 3 /D "D:\Games\Final Fantasy 7"          ff7.exe

taskkill /im FF7Music.exe

/affinity 3 = using 2 CPU's
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: Bosola on 2012-02-13 13:33:25
I'm not sure what you're getting at here. Are you pointing to the fact that a separate third-party music application can be run on another core? Well, sure. They're separate processes after all. But FF7.exe itself is still a single-threaded executable.

Proof of concept

Configuration:  Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit
                         Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.53GHz

Movies made with Camtasia:  Low  Quality      3.43 MB (http://www.mediafire.com/?xo60h9gh0g5l8qv)
                                               High  Quality  121.64 MB (http://www.mediafire.com/?ayauh3lf05iwe8u)

FF7.exe is running on two CPU's   :P

I know that Camtasia is not the best/fastest recorder, but Fraps made the movies to dark.
Btw, these are my first selfmade videos.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: Bosola on 2012-02-13 22:31:31
'Zugehörigkeit' means it has just been given an affinity to two cores - meaning two cores *can* run it if the OS finds a branched thread and decides it needs the extra resources. But FF7.exe is a single-threaded application, so it won't.

The proof's in your very image: your FF7.exe is using ~50% of your CPU resources. The FF7 executable tries to commandeer all idle cycles with null opcodes - meaning it uses 100% of any processor it runs on. The fact it's only using 50% of your CPU time proves it's only running on one core.

FF7.exe is a non-multithreaded 32-bit application compiled in a Win9x environment. It ain't gonna exploit two, three or even four hundred and seventy-six CPUs. Ever. No matter how many cores you set an affinity to.

Also, why did you record a video? An image would have sufficed.

Q: Also, why did you record a video? An image would have sufficed.
A: I am learning at the moment how to use/optimize Camtasia, so

A: I had performance problems with FF7, now they are gone.  :)

Your process explorer's 'per core' stats are just showing their general activity, not thread-specific use. Or else the application resource use would be the average of both cores.

If the app was multi-core, you wouldn't have any idle time, because of FF7.exe.'s bad habit of eating up spare cycles.

Thanks for your responses/explanations.

Can you lead me to a better analysis program, which
shows the real activity (thread-specific use) of FF7 ?

I used:

I hope you can help me with this annoying problem. When FF7 is started a DNS/TCP
request is called by C:\Windows\SysWOW64\rundll32.exe. I don't like "home calls",
so i disallowed it in my firewall. The event manager has an entry with go.microsoft.com.

Do you know this problem ?

Problem solved.
I started URLSnooper for analysis and removed my firewall entry (rundll32.exe).
Then i started ff7.exe. As expected rundll32.exe did several requests to Micro$oft.
After this i closed ff7.exe and started it again repeatedly.  ==> No more requests.

It seems that Micro$oft likes Final Fantasy 7.  ;)

This was sniffed by URLSnooper:

hang on.. it says that I don't need to DL the facepalmer 1-20 (3GB) and instead I can DL facepalmer.zip which is 16KB??? is this correct?

Doesn't make sense. I downloaded a gig of facepalmer before I saw that note, but I don't believe it can be true.

Or does it mean that if I have 1-20 I don't need the .zip file.. but then why is it there? confused.  :|

@Future^Bacon: Do you mean this file :  FacePalmer.zip.torrent
It is used to download FacePalmer via Torrent.
If you don't know how to use Torrent's, then you should forget this file.  ;)

You can download the .zip or the .rar version of FacePalmer.
The .rar version is easier to install.
The Bootleg installer recognizes both versions.

! You need only one version !

ah yeah that makes a bit more sense... it doesn't say FacePalmer.zip.torrent in the list though. All good I've just been getting the .rar

Next Question :D

edit: nevermind, I went to your mediafire disaster recovery googledocs and found the files there as well as some others, thanks again :D Also I didn't notice that someone else posted the same question on the previous page my bad. D:

ALSO for anyone else who may be looking: btjunkie is dead,  'Final Fantasy VII Remix v.2-5-1 installer.exe' can be got here http://torrentz.eu/295211b4bbcc9c45a92d92ec95c0340e06e5bbbd

However I also came across the problem FL-BSE v0.1.1UPD.zip link sends you to the download for FL-BSE v0.1.zip which someone else also asked, but there was no answer.

The file FL-BSE v0.1.1UPD.zip can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?b6rg7lgn499cso7

I know this is about my 10th edit on this post, but I figured I could make it easier for people looking for those video files.

ff7_enhanced_movies_1.zip is located here: https://rapidshare.com/files/2135061499/ff7_enhanced_movies_1.zip
ff7_enhanced_movies_2.zip is located here: https://rapidshare.com/files/1099401798/ff7_enhanced_movies_2.zip

Yes I know, and rapidshare also doesn't let you download more than one file at a time unless you pay 10 bucks a month, which is a pain in the proverbial. They need to change their name.

But that's where the files are hosted according to the big list, it would be great to have those files mirrored at mediafire, considering it's taken me over 6 hours to download 900MB from rapidshare.

I'm all done, and it's working great, thanks for your help.  :-)

It seems that a lot of the hair textures are missing, because the back of some sprites heads are invisible in the field models. i.e. the guards in the first scene when you get off the train, as in this screen.

@Future^Bacon: This problem is new for me.
Did you install FF7 Unified Model Installer (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12522.0) ?

I suggest people wait until U002 before using this since there are some bugs to iron and I am changing installer slightly so the Menu Overhaul is fully compatible with the installer.

No, I did it following the tutorial.
Can I install the unified model installer on top, or do I need to start over?

You can install UMI after the Bootleg installation.
But before you do this you should read my PM i have send to you.

I've downloaded Trish(aka Mike)'s custom model pack, but it is still appearing red on my mod list.  Any idea why that might be?

EDIT: Figured it out, the link to that mod has a file missing the apostrophe in between the closing parentheses and the s.  Everything is green for me now, just waiting on it to finish

hey everyone, first post here. I just want to start off by saying that everyone who has worked on these mods are forever my hero's and i shall not forget you!! there seriously needs to be a memorial built in all yalls honor cos all this is seriously incredible...

I'm currently about 95 percent done with downloading all these mods. thanks for the TUT its been a big help, but there is one thing i am unclear about... the remix 2.5.1 installer. I know that the btjunkie link is kaputt so im gonna download in parts, but there is the option for parts 1-13, and then there is an option for parts 1-4. im going with the 1-4 cos it allows resuming, but what i am wondering is: if i download either of the versions, unpack them so that i am left with "final fantasy VII remix 2.5.1 installer.exe and drop it into the bootleg folder along with my other mods, will the .rar files in red on the mod list turn green or do i have to drop the parts into the bootleg folder along with the installer.exe? I thought i read something about this last night but i looked through this thread again today and didn't see anything.

I noticed on the main post that the screen shot of the bootleg folder that only contains the installer.exe, so i think what i said above is what i'm supposed to do, but since i'm a complete noob at this i just want to make sure.

props you guys.

Just put the files you download in the MODS folder.
Don't extract them.
Bootleg identifies the correct version of Remix and does the rest.

how convenient! i'm megabytes away from giving the installation a shot, on part 4 of the installer. thanks so much for the fast reply.

This forum is awesome. learning about how everyone actually updates these graphics has been blowing my mind all day... going in frame by frame and touching things up sans payment and all for the love of the game is just so awesome to me. and on top of that, giving them out for free, creating neat little programs that allow users to tailor the mods to their tastes, and being so apt to help out people having problems... i really just can't get over it! great work.

Hi,

I just installed everything and it works great with one exception; when I go to run it, an error pops up stating:

"Failed to set the requested fullscreen mode, reverting to original resolution window mode."

I opened the ff7_opengl.cfg file to check the screen settings which are set to:

window_size_x = 1280
window_size_y = 960
preserve_aspect = yes
fullscreen = yes

I am unable to enlarge the screen as it is stuck in quarter window mode.  Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch for an awesome program by the way.

I ran the bootleg installer fine but there was some errors in the log.

At first, I didn't disable MS Security Essentials so it quarantined couple of files so after installation, there were errors in the logs. Stupid of me for not saving them.

So I ran the bootleg installer second time after disabling MS Security Essentials.

These are the errors I received in the log after the installation.

Error in startmap: Incorrect number of entries: 2/11
Error in blackbg2: Incorrect number of entries: 24/42
Error in blackbg3: Incorrect number of entries: 18/28
Error in blackbg4: Incorrect number of entries: 54/72
Error in blackbg7: Incorrect number of entries: 16/25
Error in blackbgi: Incorrect number of entries: 10/17
Error in blackbgk: Incorrect number of entries: 16/21
Error in elminn_1: Incorrect number of entries: 16/17

Error in elminn_1: Incorrect number of entries: 16/17
Error in psdun_2: Incorrect number of entries: 9/10

min51_1 patch failed, not original script
chrin_2 patch failed, not original script
ealin_2 patch failed, not original script
blin67_2 patch failed, not original script
elmin4_2 patch failed, not original script

games_2 patch failed, not original script
gongaga patch failed, not original script
goson patch failed, not original script
cosin1_1 patch failed, not original script
kuro_4 patch failed, not original script

Are they important or can the game run fine with those errors?

I got to the first save and the game ran fine so far but I'm afraid it'll crash later after some important part.

How to enable FF7Music:

- Open FF7Music.exe from the installation folder.

- Click on Configure.

- Go to the Files tab.

- Under Profile, select the music you chose from Bootleg.

- Save and Exit.

Also, run FF7Config.exe as administrator and configure the correct sound and MIDI devices.
You should also make sure the sound mixer volume levels for the device, applications and FF7.exe are turned up.

e1sunz, if you were asking me how I found out about this site, it was by luck watching youtube videos. I've been a member quiet a while just lurking around trying mods, but this is the first time I've tried multiple mods at one time! The game runs perfectly and the mods are fantastic, it's insane the amount of customization when installing the mods too. The people involved really are incredible!

Hey guys i'm having a spot of trouble here...I've managed to get all my other mods downloaded ok and they're all green. There's just two I can't seem to get right though.

The first is ff7_opengl-0.7.11b.zip I've tried leaving it unzipped like in the tutorial description and it never showed up so I tried unzipping it and that didn't work either, it just stays red.

The second one i'm having bother with is the Trish(aka) Mike's model pack I've tried all 3 download options for it (main, alt and the one from the big list) But It keeps coming up the file cannot be found, is there another place I can download it from or am I doing something wrong?

This is my first time trying out mods so i'm not a whole lot sure what i'm doing but I seemed to have managed to get the rest going fine. I'm really excited to play through FF7 again wiht all the cool textures and stuff so any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Check the name it needs to be the same as in the modlist, with the Trish(aka) Mike's model pack  your missing an underscore before the s! ( "_s") Check with the mod list in the bootleg to be sure.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg

Some systems don't like fullscreen mode.
Turn Fullscreen off.  Set the desired resolution.  Use the window position to hide the border around the window.
You can use Bootloader to easily alter the settings.

icepick314,
Those errors are normal for this version.  The Menu Overhaul ReTranslation is not completely compatible with mods like Aeris revival and Hardcore.  Those errors just mean that some scenes won't have the ReTranslated text.  The game will run fine.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg

Hey, thanks for being patient with me. Or not. I got the resolution sorted with trial and error, got my game loaded up all is well except a few things. Nothing thats stopping the game from working just a few pet peeves really.

So far what i've noticed, for my save points I chose the crisis core one, (Zacks Buster sword with the feathers swirling round it.) But for some reason I just have the default one in the game. I have checked bootleg to make sure my choices have saved which they have and my mods are all still green on the list so my selection should've been taken into account there.

Along the same lines I also chose Mikes blue flames for my limit break. (Advent style!) but again I just have the default orange vase shaped limit flames. I'm running Bootleg again just incase something didn't install right. Do you think that might be the case?

Everything else so far is ok, characters are well proportioned textures look smoother etc, it's just those few key choices that never seemed to mke it through. Do you think reinstalling will resolve those issues?

Edit; I know what's gone wrong it's the Trish AKA Mike file, for whatever reason it's not showing up properly is there another location I can download it from? I tried downloading it again from the big list of mods but it keeps saying it's not found...

I'm astonished to see such an amazing work done for Final Fantasy VII. Thanks for everything and for Bootleg.

I just finished downloading every mod Bootleg needed for everything I choosed, then, everything goes wrong :

Antivirus / Firewall : Kaspersky PURE 9.1.0.124 (the same problem happens when I kill him)

And my BFE config :

Post by: Lutherian on 2012-05-18 00:58:16
Thanks for answering (I just saw the correct topic to post such questions, I'm sorry).

I did install FF7 in "C:\Jeux\FF7", but then, I tried to install it to D:\Jeux\FF7, and it's the same :(. I even followed your screencaps (http://tinyurl.com/843cwcf) by installing the mods in "C:\Jeux\FF7\Bootleg0038".

Maybe I'm doing something wrong here :
1- I run Bootleg.exe by clicking "Run Bootleg" in BFE. It's ok, right ?
2- I can leave both "FF7 Install Image" fields empty ?

About the FF7 Install Image, when I launch Bootleg, it says it can't find ff7.exe... because he created another directory "FF7" witch can only fail : C:\Jeux\FF7\FF7...

I don't know what on Earth is happening there.

I'm new to the whole modding thing and I have a problem when I run the bootleg.  When I check the modlisting everything is either yellow or green.  After running the mod it gets "stuck" at Updating Avalanche GUI.. Now I say "stuck" because its been running for going on 2 hours and is still at the same spot.  The program isn't freezing it isn't giving me an error message hasn't failed.  I guess the question is what is wrong?  What do I do?

Check that all your mods with an exe (Avalanche GUI, FF7Music etc) aren't blocked :

Right click > Properties > Unblock.

Sadly, it didn't solve my problem but I'm pretty sure it will help you.

Hi I could do with some help, first off, the MO.exe file won't download the link seems to be dead, does anyone have it?

Also when I download Trish(aka Mike)'s custom model pack.7z it will always show as red, no matter what I do. I've checked it wrote the same as bootlegger even adding in the "_" and tried the other version writing in the apostrophe but it always shows as red.

EDIT FIXED, it turns out you do not need to add the ".7z" on the end.

I thought I would post in some info that I discovered with different files, but of course this might be just a fault on my end, but I used both the FacePlamer zips (20 part and torrent). When using the 20 part zip a lot of the resized maps were not showing up, I reinstalled several times with now change. When I place the torrent zip into the folder and installed it seems to work perfectly. No idea if this is helpful just a heads up I guess. Oh and I've tried different settings when installing the mods, like bootleg, FacePlamer, and BlackFan+SL1982+FacePalmer(this is what is currently working best for me using the torrent zip)

If you run Bootleg more than once during the same Windows session, Bootleg will think FacePalmer installed correctly even if there are missing files.

Oh perfect, thank you! This makes perfect sense because I have to run the MO again because the re-translations don't seem to work first time round and when I reinstall it most of the world map textures and town maps seem to revert. I'll try reinstalling it when I reboot windows.

If you reinstall Menu Overhaul, just change the mod path back to 'bootleg' and you'll have the textures back.
Just a warning, the ReTranslation may be incompatible with mods like Lost Wing.

I downloaded all of the mods thus far besides one. It looks like the mod MO.exe which (Completely new interface and retranslation) happens in. The download looks like it got 404'ed on google docs. If anyone has this please share.

On an unrelated note when I was opening my game before I downloaded any mobs I ran into an error message at the load in screen. The whole screen was white with black outlines of the game. I'm running 64-bit windows 7 with GeForce 560ti graphics card could it be too powerful for the game? If so what should I do or will it fix its when I run Bootleg on it.

Thank you!

Hey guys, great stuff here.

I'm having an issue- game won't start. I've followed all the steps, got my mods working, ran bootleg successfully. I have my cd in the drive but it's asking me for "disk 1, 2, or 3." I have my config directed to my dvd drive and no luck.

Any thoughts?

[EDIT]

I installed with the Ultima 2 disk edition. I have the 2.20GB version as well. I tried mounting the disks from the 2.20GB version and disk 2 worked! AWESOME!!!

NEW PROBLEM:

How do I play in windowed mode? Un-checking fullscreen from the FF7 BootLoader.exe doesn't seem to do anything. hmm

Find mo.exe here: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=12503.msg173800

Also, when you run bootleg you will be running various patches that will make it work. FF7 on it's own does not work and requires some updates as it is. :)

The option is in the bottom-left under the Game tab. You can use English, French, German, or Spanish text.

Thanks, I found it :p

but now (ahem) some of the options I selected are gone: no music, no always run, not the avatars I selected, not the menu I expected....

I will try with an English version of the game. I tried with the French version I bought during last century :D

Again, thanks for that tremendous amount of work you and all the modders have acheived. I'm really amazed.

How do I play in windowed mode? Un-checking fullscreen from the FF7 BootLoader.exe doesn't seem to do anything. hmm

using the english version, things are in a better shape.

Everything but the music, avatars, save everywhere and always run issues remain.

And when starting from a zipped fresh install, it unzips it in the wrong folder.

See, I first install the games in x:\games\FFVII then zipped it using BFE.

When BFE starts the process again, it unzips it in x:\games\FFVII\FFVII....

edit: with the last install, just remains the avatars and music issues. I have music during the opening FMV, but once the train stops, no more music, just sounds

The avatar and music issues are fixed for the 0039 release.
To work around these problems, make sure CUSTOM is selected for avatars after you've chosen the desired ones and before running Bootleg.
Manually extract OSTRe.7z into .\FF7Music\OSTRe\ to restore the music.

When you create the FF7 image, make sure the files are in the root of the zip.  Don't include the FFVII folder.
When you open the zip, you should see everything inside the game folder and not FFVII.

One problem, my saved games aren't showing up. They're still on my computer in the same place as before but I do not get the option to Continue once in-game. I'm not using a difficulty mod either.

EDIT: Hurr, I should have been more thorough. I found out what to do. For anyone in the future who has this problem just go to your installation folder and a new Save folder has been created. Simply copy and paste your save from the original location to it.

P.S. Thanks so much for this. These past few days have been a nightmare regarding FF7.

Hi, I have a question in regards to the bootleg configuration. I have already downloaded the "ff7_enhanced_movies_1.zip"(Enhanced FMVs part 1 of 2) and "ff7_enhanced_movies_2.zip" (Enhanced FMVs part 2 0f 2), but the alternate downloads are still in red, do I just ignored that? To be more specific, the first part of the file of the alternate download is yellow, but the following parts are red. For example, part 1 is yellow, but part 2 of 3 and 3 of 3 are still red. Okay, that's all for now, thanks.

No, you only need one version of the mod.
I'll look into why it still shows as red.
Probably just a bug with the mod list.

I have the same thing happen when I choose Rumbah 1280 smooth. Part 1 of ff7_ehanced_movies_1 and ff7_enhanced_movies_2 is yellow, while the other parts are red. I assumed a bug in the mod list and that all the parts should be yellow because when choosing any of the Bootleg+***** options, all the ff7_enhanced_movies parts turn red.

I personally use Rumbah 1280 Smooth, and Rumbah 640 Smooth is good for playing in smaller resolutions. If you choose either option, you don't need the ff7_enhanced_movies.

Hello @ricowtje,
To change your menu background manually to the one you wanted, simply go to this link:

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/5604/bustersword1024x1024.jpg

After you go to that link, save that image as "buster_00" in the folder called "C:/Games/FF7/mods/Bootleg/Menu/" and it will appear in Final Fantasy VII. Your directory may be different than mine, but this should help you.

As for your keyboard, you need to find out if you installed the Laptop Keypad patch. This may help you if you are using a laptop.

Laptop_Keypad_patch.zip                                         Configure FF7 Controls for Laptop             FILE (https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BwC7kjtdF7wpMjdlYTNkMWUtZGIwOS00MGI3LWJjNmYtNzYxYTUzN2VmNmQx)

Good Luck, mate.

Thanks for the reply!

I found the keyboard patch aswell through Google.

Though I have one morge question, when I start the game and start a new game, I don't get the feeling the graphics are better as they should be.
I played around with different packages and settings but nothing seems to work.

The only change in graphics, are battles and fonts. The font in the game is MUCH sharper and the battle characters of Cloud and Barret are improved, like I wanted.

The field character, movies, battlefield and playfield aren't better at all. Also the music isn't different.

Do I have to do this manually as well?
So bootleg only changed my battle character and the font then?

I'm sorry I'm asking all of this while I'm only new. Thank in advance though!

*Edit*

Okay I have put the wallpaper file in the mods/menu folder but it hasn't changed.
I have watched the opening video through the folder and it's the PS3 remake movie of the startmovie. Yet what I get to see is the old PS1 movie.

My guess is, that the game is getting most of the files, of the disc files. How can I change this? Bootleg won't do anything else for me though...

This is the directory.

C:/ProgramFilesx86/square inc/Final Fantasy VII
The Mods folder is in there aswell.
Though I have selected the C:/Games/Final Fantasy VII folder, So do I need to Re-install the game to that folder aswell?

Alrighty...

First off. Please re-install everything to a new folder.

Step One - Create a folder on the C: Drive called, "Games" then inside "Games" make a folder called "Final Fantasy VII."

Step Two - Put everything (.exe files and .zips and .rars and .7zs, ec cetera) into a folder called "bootleg." This folder should be inside the  "Final Fantasy VII" folder.

Step Three - Please Read this tutiorial:

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13212.0 (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13212.0)

If you have further questions, feel free to ask the almighty patient one. :-)

Awesome! It finally works all together now!

Thanks!

I seem to get one last error though. When I start the game through Bootloader I get the message 'failed to set the requested fullscreen mode, reverting to original window mode.'

After that I get a window about 1/4 of my original screen size. (I also changed the settings to the ones in the tutorial and get the same error.)
How do I fix this?

I haven't got any other errors explained in the tutorial.

I think you are setting the Screen Resolution and Refresh Rate higher than what your monitor can handle. Check those settings for your monitor and use them in Bootloader.

Hi PitBrat

Cloud Battle Model: Remix APZ
Cloud's Swords: Millenia

Just got done installing this earlier and having the same problems as Nait, Cloud has no sword in Battle, but I used a different Cloud.

Cloud Battle Model: Hi-Res Classic
Cloud's Swords: Millenia

Edit: Well I got it working, I went ahead and downloaded cloudswords_installer.rar, ran the installer and it installed the weapons and now they show up fine.

Okay So I fixed the problem with the music through a new bootleg installation. Though now with the same settings as I used to have, the characters won't change in the battle, I have the original cloud battle figure right now. I have selected the grimmy style character in bootleg. So how can this happen?

As of Bootleg 0039, Grimmy's AC Yuffie is broken.  Don't use this model.
Also, there's a bug that install Grimmy's AC Yuffie when Grimmy's AC Tifa is selected.
Don't install Grimmy's AC Yuffie nor Grimmy's AC Tifa.

This issue is fixed in the upcoming 040 release.
Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg

Yet again did I install bootleg. This time without the AC Yuffie and AC Tifa mods.
Still the AC cloud Grimmy battle character is not shown in the battles.

Could anyone help with this?

*note* The AC cloud battle mod did work when the rest of the mods weren't installed, so is there a mod that's blocking this mod?

When is the 040 release coming out?

Are you running as admin? Antivirus turned off? What does the install say it is doing? Like when you click runbootleg what does the dos windows say they are doing? When "adding sprinkles" Does it unpack everything or do you get really bad errors?

Title: Re: [Tutorial] Easy installing mods to FFVII with Bootleg
Post by: ricowtje on 2012-07-24 21:31:07
I have windows 7 and disabled every admin question and added all rights to my account.

Therefore I don't see any errors in bootleg.log
I have ripped the Iso's of the game discs. (A friend of mine bought the game a few years back in america, brought it back home, and I ripped it so I could play it aswell.) I live in Europe though. Is it possible that it jams only the Grimmy AC cloud battle character because of that?

I don't think so, because when I had the game installed in the wrong directory the battle character and field character were both like I wanted them to. I think it's something from another mod maybe?

It's not likely that FF7Music is causing the problem.
What video card are you using?
Post your app.log.
Intel video cards have trouble running a fully modded FF7.
You could try running the game in a window and disabling vsync.

It's most likely your Intel graphics card that is causing the problem.
I don't know the specific reason Intel cards don't work with a heavily modded FF7, but it's most likely memory related.
The Intel driver doesn't allow you to manually change the ram allotment.
The driver expects the game to set the amount of required video ram.
I haven't had much luck making a fully modded game run on Intel cards.
You might try disabling all PNG scene textures.  Use the LGP versions instead.

Alright I guess I'll come back and give you the results when I get back my graphics card (about 3 weeks >.>).

I have a question. When selecting your presets on Bootleg front end and selecting the music on game tab/ soundtrack...Which is the best one to use for the custom music? ty :)

Hello !

First of all, I am amazed by all the great work that is existing here, so much passion is just admirable.

I'm a new user, and I sincerely sorry to re up an old topic, but my problem is directly concerning this subject.

I have installed FF7 in C:\Jeux\FINAL FANTASY VII, Bootleg040 is in C:\Jeux\Bootleg040, and my mods are in E:\modsff7.

Every path is correctly configured in BFE.exe, I only have green and yellow mods. BFE.exe, Bootleg.exe are set to run as admin by default. Firewalls and background antiviral scans are also de-activated.

Once I have defined the mods I want to install, I run Bootleg from the red icon in BFE, and there, here the message I have :

after exploring Bootleg.exe with ResHack, I discovered 3 filenames that are not present in the zip I've downloaded here : 7za.exe, Bootleg_Mods.htm, Sprinkles.7z.

I have 7-zip on my computer, so I did manage for 7za.exe, but for the 2 others, I have no clue, except that the mentionned size for Sprinkles.7z is strangely corresponding to the size of Bootleg.exe

So, I had arrived to this conclusion : those files are INSIDE Bootleg.exe. Plus, the Bootleg_Readme is present in the folder, but found by bootleg, as shown on the picture.

MY QUESTION : If the files are in the folder and in Bootleg.exe, why does it not working ? :(

Thanks in advance for your help ! :)

I'm on a win 7 ultimate x64 with dual-core proc and 4Gb RAM.

As the message said, did you installed FF7 in a non system folder ? I mean not C:\Program Files, etc..
And too, I personnaly had problems with my antivirus at install( me, not all people ), so I closed it durign the install. It could help too

I have installed FF7 in C:\Jeux\FINAL FANTASY VII, Bootleg040 is in C:\Jeux\Bootleg040, and my mods are in E:\modsff7.

None of the required elements are in a system folder. :/  And I did a full install.

Hum... I don't remember having troubles during FF7 Installation, but I think I can reinstall it with my antivir disabled :/

Either way, it was disabled when I tried to run bootleg... :'(

Where did you install the game? A lot of factors could be making it fail.

I have installed it in C:\Jeux\FINAL FANTASY VII  as mentionned since my first post.

But ! I think I have found my problem. Even by checking the option "Run as administrator" on all exe, it didn't worked, so I used the command line "net users Administrator /active:yes"  to activate the real admin session on win7, runned bootleg from it, and it is actually installing. I even set the temp folder on an external drive, for more chances.

I think I have a bit too much modify my win7, and it's maybe time to format for me >.>'

I'll tell you if it had worked !

That's right  ;D

MY QUESTION : If the files are in the folder and in Bootleg.exe, why does it not working ? :(
Order to above mentioned files to unpack it needs about 310 MB free space on the system partition.
If space is not available or the data are extracted and written too slowly to disk, the 'Sprinkles.7z' may not found.

Hold the Bootleg.exe (CMD box) with the pause button briefly and wait until the hard drive is ready.

EDIT: BFE.exe and Bootleg.exe request automatic admin rights.

I never imagined that the speed of writing could change something... Interesting ! :o

It's still installing, no problem happen till now. Seems that my usual session have just rights problems, after all :/

EDIT : working ! :D

EDIT 2 : Well.... The modding routine finished correctly, with no errors or warning, but when I tried to launch FF7, It crashed when clicking "new game", and I have no sound or music :( here's a copy of APP.LOG :

EDIT 3 :  Remembering all the useless tries I've done, I decided to remove everything and to re install everything from Zero, and now it does perfectly work. The files of the game were corrupted with all my manips, and it caused the APP.LOG you can see above. Everything is fine now. Thank you ! :)

Hey, a lot of these links for mods need checking over, a good 80% of the ones linked to a Google Drive are broken. Suggest changing this to the Mega.co.nz one from the Bulk download section.

Yes, Bootleg is history now (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=16370.0).
