General Discussion / Midgar GLSL Shader

For those who may not know, this shader was made with 100% math. No models, no textures, no sound effects.

WIP / Re: [In Development] FF8 Voiceover Project
« on: 2015-08-07 22:15:29 »
I have been watching this project since its inception and realised that the progression (percentage complete) has not gone up in a while, was wondering if there is a revised release, if so, when?
The progress has gone up a bit, I just haven't updated the post. Off the top of my head, there are 2200 lines done. Most of what's  missing is squall, selphie, and various minor characters that are a low priority.

I've had severe scheduling problems the past few months, which is why progress has been so slow recently.  I still hope to release it this year, but not everything about the progress is under my control. None of the actors (nor myself) are being paid for this, and many of us have lives and jobs that prioritize this project, and we should all respect that.

The good news is that pretty much all the scripting is done (that was far more tedious than editing sound files), so the only thing left to do is to record the actors and edit their recordings.

Also side point: It would be awesome if you made a bloopers reel when you have finished the project, both for us on the forums but also for you and the voice actors to look back on fondly.
This is doable, but I think I'd rather let aussieroth handle the blooper reel. He loves making those. I plan to give him the raw files for his enjoyment when it's all done.

Hi, there! How the project is going? Do you need Xu's voice?
project has been a little slow the past few weeks, but i try to do a little evey day. I do still need a xu, however i am very busy at the moment. Send an audition and/or demo reel to [email protected]. i will check it in about two weeks when real life settles down.

You guys (people excited about the project) are the reason i do this. All the feedback i get is hughly valued.

Sorry to hear about that. Unfortunately I just started my (independent) life so I have no means to help you. What I can say is that, from the few videos I've seen from you, you seem like a nice, reliable guy. I hope you find the help you need.

The last thing I bought from Squaresoft/Square-enix was a used copy of FF12 (technically they didn't make money from me, Gamestop did). That's not likely to change in the foreseeable future. I just don't enjoy mindless, strategy-less beat-em-ups where your characters are godly and can never die. If you want to tell a story, make a fucking movie. Games need to be interactive, and the remake most likely will fail that test.

Oh yeah, Why not use a computer voice for all the voices that hasn't been done yet to kind of complete it, and as you get the real voices, replaces it? Just a suggestion?
I have a program which lets me know which files haven't been made yet, and if I have temporary files there, I won't know when the project is done.

The project will likely have two releases. One will release when the voices are all there. The second will be a more polished version where the voices pan based on character location, and probably with more environmental effects for realism.

I wouldn't take anything seriously from the docudramas that plague modern media.

There's a pretty easy test you can do to figure out whether we went to the moon or not.

The astronauts who (supposedly) landed on the moon installed several mirrors on the moon's surface for reflecting laser beams. If you know the locations of these mirrors (the information is publicly available, probably on NASA's web site), you can fire a laser pulse at one of them and calculate the return time. If it returns at all, it means those mirrors are actually there.

Yes, there were rovers there, but that was the early 70s. The rovers didn't have very sophisticated AI. A person would have needed to place the mirrors correctly.

83
If they are doing a 20 year remake for each of them, ff8's remake will come in 2019. Plenty of time to discourage them from ruining another good game in the series.

84
It reinforces it.  Because I already know this remake is going to crap all over the original and that when the nostalgia and hype have died off, the original is going to be replayed an awful lot more.
My feelings exactly.

Team Avalanche / Re: I guess that's it, guys

I've gotten similar feedback about the voiceover project. We ultimately decided that Squaresoft sucks and our voiceovers will be lightyears ahead of theirs, so we're continuing the project anyway. You should do the same.

SE have become too big of a company to create any game with a soul. Development is not a passion driven (perhaps on a individual level, but not on a global level) process. It's business minded. Your hard pressed to find any true good games that spawn from this mentality. SE and other AAA companies tries to create the new Justin Bieber of gaming with each title, not a marble that will stand the test of time. </rant repeat>
Unfortunately big companies don't care. The gaming market is so big now that you can release an utter piece of garbage, stamp "EA" or "Blizzard" or whatever brand on it, and it's guaranteed to make way more than it cost to produce.

Most people who call themselves gamers aren't. They're just posers trying to hop on the "gaming is cool" bandwagon. Real gamers actually do research on games before they buy them to make sure they're high quality. Case and point: League of Legends and Call of Duty are two of the biggest games in the world, and they're both awful.

87
Sadly, I'm inclined to agree with most of the other people here. A remake would have been nice, if all they were doing was upgrades. Better graphics. Remastered (redone) music and sounds, expanded battle/materia system. However, when SE says "we're changing the story" my brain saw "we're changing the only reason people liked the game in the first place." SE's storytelling in the past decade has been pretty terrible.

I just hope they don't incorporate any of the retconned BS from the spinoffs into the remake, but they probably will.

The Tales games have a similar playstyle to the retro final fantasies. I'm playing persona3 at the moment and it got me hooked.

89
Very nice. That was quick. When we get some of this stuff edited, I'll let you know if anything needs to be tweaked.

90
I share dlpbs sentiments. Square,s definition of "remake" is laughable at best. Plus, the information is from a site ive never heard of, so im not taking it seriously to begin with.

91
If that doesn't work, we may just have to never play dialogue choices. There are some places in the game where the character doesn't even speak the choice you make, and other places where they do.

92
Another option would be to voice each choice (in the characters head) as the player highlights the choice with the hand cursor, and silence it when they move to a different choice or they pick one.

93
I've updated the original post with links to the archived videos of our hangout.

94
You bet! I'll highlight the whole thing into my twitch archive.

Myself, Ficedula (whom you should know if you read this forum), and Aussieroth7 (FF7 co-director, creator of boatloads of youtube fandubs) spent two hours talking about random topics related to Final Fantasy 7, the voiceover project, square enix, programming, and a few off-topic things.

You can change a character's mood by buying them something nice.

I have a question...

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / Re: FF7 Sound Effects
« on: 2015-05-20 17:40:18 »
Don't bother with ambient sound effects. Ultrasound lets you do those without adding/replacing anything in the ff7 files.

As far as the engine support, keep the playback rate at 44100hz or half. The engine might not play anything higher. You also have to ensure your sounds are encoded into microsoft 4 bit ADPCM. That's the only format the game will play (I think). There shouldn't be a length limitation.

You will release the script changes sided with the voice over project, right? Not as a single package I hope...
These good old non-voiced games are awesome the way they are
Correct. Hacktuar will contain everything listed, the translation, and the script code to play the voices, but it won't contain the voices themselves. There's no way to separate them any more than that.
