Damn You FF7! Damn you all to hell!!
« on: 2002-04-29 09:41:26 »
That is how I feel about my NEW FF7 problem. It seems that using my 3D card F*cks up the graphics. Software looks fine, Nvidia-mode doesn't load at all, and Accelerated without Nvidia produces these results:

Not only that, but no matter what GFX mode I'm in, whenever I leave a field (Exit Nibelheim, go into the mansion or another building) I get a fatal error. I've checked, and it's the same one every time. I get it even on the non-Choco-patched version of FF7. This is after a clean install of the game, FYI. Here's the Error:

Code: [Select]
Instruction at 0x0069b26d referanced memory at 0x44200004 Memory could not be "read".

Can anyone look at this for me, or tell me if they also get the same error or SOMETHING?! I'd like to think that I'm not the only one getting this error.

Thanks in advance!

...I'll give it a shot....

first of all I'm using 28.32 on a G2.
I have the latest version of rivatuner.

You need to get Rivatuner.....The best place to get it as at that Russian site...if you look closely, you'll see the download button for it...and Russian looks kinda like English....at least enough to find Rivatuner's download button....it kinda small.  http://www.nvworld.ru/ (hmm, seems to be down) or http://www.guru3d.com/download/

Turn off the 8 bit palletized texturing in the DX7 pulldown, in the DirectX setting, under the Texture Tab. Put the anisotropy on level 0.

And use the TNT patch, with Riva checked....as a test, the last test should say FAIL, when RIVA is not selected, if it says PASS, you going to have those type of backgrounds....also turn off antialaising, and as a last step, if needed, play with the texture origin adjustment.

I Don't know what's causing the fatal error.....
not enough V-Ram? or free HD space?....bad stick?

So... when did this start?  Did you get a new video card (and what is it)?

And um...

Rivatuner may indeed fix your problem.  In software mode, do you not get the fatal error?

Follow the instructions regarding RivaTuner. You can get it @ www.guru3d.com

Also, it seems that turning off 8-bit palettized textures creates a big SLOWDOWN for world maps, chocobo races, and causes battles to load a little slower. (Note: I am using a GeForce3, I have some text/window issues with FF7 w/o using RivaTuner, but it is still very nice looking)

As for that error, I haven't encountered it before, but it is possible that some background tasks could be causing it. What OS are you trying to use?

Ok... First, I AM using Rivatuner, so I'll try the 8-bit thing later. (I'm in the process of clearing off my D-Drive, which needs to be reformatted. It hasn't been reformatted since I bought it a few years ago.)

I get the error in both software & hardware modes. I can't check Riva mode, cause FF7 won't boot in that mode. It pops up black, like it usually does, but then it quits out before the opening animation even plays. This (not working in eather mode) tells me it may not a problem with my card, so much as it may be another problem of some kind. (If someone knows how I can get it to run in Riva mode, let me know.)

I'm using Windows 2000, SP2 as my OS. My video card WAS a Creative Labs Anniliator 2 - 32meg, but I recently switched that out for my dad's Winfast GeForce2 64meg card. Still running the Nvidia XP 23.xx drivers though...

<ahem> that's why you should use the 8-bit thingy dood

I had exactly the same problem with the Riva mode in FF7.  However, disabling "8-bit palettized textures" in RivaTuner (found under "Textures", oddly enough, in the DirectX settings), prevented my system from crashing. Now it looks beautiful, but takes a lot of time to load up the world map and get the chocobo races. Loading up battles also takes a tad longer (tho not by much).

I think there's another article that I wrote on the board about that...look around.

I think I'm in love with it.

Though for topic purposes, I have a game that looks similer (sp) to that but I think that it's because of my megahertage...

The black screen is a conflict between the TNT patch and the 8 bit pallet thing. To use the FF7.exe from the patch, the 8 bit pallet must be disabled. If it's enabled, the screen goes black, then you either stay stuck in that black screen, or (if your lucky) it goes back to windows desktop. I believe Software mode will work regardless, if the 8 bit thing is off or on.

Also, there are a limited amount, of drivers, that don't work well with FF7.

The 6.50's (don't need Rivatuner for this driver)
12.41's, 21.83's, seem to work okay with FF7 and the newer 28.32's work fine. (from my experience) The 23.11's refused to work correctly on my system. I got the picture to look good, but the performance was the worst.....a real slide show.

Correction: I'm using the 23.11's. I found that out after my post, but I didn't have the time to change it.

Well... I wiped both my HDs, made a clean install of Win2k, so now I'm going to have a lot of free space to work with. I plan to install FF7 on my system this weekend after I see Spider-Man, so I'll try the suggestions made so far.

If you're having so much problems with FF7, one easy way to fix this would be to pick up a cheap Voodoo card off of some auction site. Runs perfectly on a Voodoo II.

Yeah, but Voodoo II can't handle lots of the new games that are coming out :-p

GeForce4 TI 4600 forever!  Benchmarks show it to be 906% as good as my TNT2 M64!
(as soon as I get the money)

My Voodoo2 is shit in my Win2k system.

And when all fails, I'll still have Gaia, my Win98 system with my 16meg Voodoo2. Too bad the audio card sucks so back, but hey! It's only a Soundblaster original... (Sucky MIDI but super supported!) Besides... I can't play Privateer with a newer card. (I really need to set up my systems for single monitor/mouse/keyboard support...)

I tried getting my V2 to run with my G2.......couldn't get it to work. Seems that a lot of the drivers are named the same.....one would overwrite the other, and the results would be that they both wouldn't work.

Actually... Thinking back, I don't think this is the first time I've seen this error.  I seem to remember someone else coming to this forum with a similar error once?

I definately have seen it somewhere.  But I do not remember seeing a solution.  Sorry :-p

I remember seeing graphics like this before. I go it when I has Anisotropic filtering turned on to level 2. I think it's Tap 16(?) I'm always usinf the 12.90 with my GeForce2 Pro, because changing Detonator drivers with a VIA chipset installed can be fatal to your system, especailly my sensitive setup. But, anyway, back to the subject, downloading RiveTuner is the wise thing. I have RC10 I believe it's the latest. Fildleing around with the settings can help. But be careful! Do you have a GeForce3 Seph3D?

I'm using a MSI Turbo board....

which is VIA. and the only problem I run into is that windows trys to find the driver for me. I push cancel seven or eight times and I finally get into Vga mode. Then I run the executable, and it won't work for some reason.....So what I did, was I unzip the selfextracting File. Turns out it's just an autoexectuable made by Winzip. Using Winzip allows you to decompress the driver, yourself.

I just unzipped into a new folder, then went to my Device Manager, went the Video part (can't remember if it said unknowndevice or if I just used VGA standard....I guess you could also use that update button that's in the display icon, inside Control Panel.) went to the Driver Tab...and pushed the update driver button, hit next a few times...then browsed for the new directory I made. Everything went smoothly when I update the drivers, that way.

I'm not sure if it's Win9x only. It happenned to me when I installed the 4-in-1 drivers for my MSI K7T266 Pro-R. After autoexec, you could only hear Windows loading, couldn't see it. Also, the last screen of autoexec is like double vision.
It's a shame there isn't any decent chipsets except VIA for use with an AMD processor. I've heard of Irongate but isn't it AMD's own make?

I'm using the ALi Magik chipset with my Athlon XP and it's great - performance isn't anything to scream about, but it's not bad, and I've had no compatibility issues.

GF3... In my dreams, I see such power, but then the light of the GF4 TI 2400 shines beyond it, and I am left here, in the dark...

To answer your question, I'm running a 64-meg LEADTEK Winfast GF2, running the 23.11 drivers. I have yet to install FF7 and see if it works, since I just reformatted my drives to make room for a project I should be working on instead of typing here on the board.

dgp: I'm using the K7AMA. It's the only mobo that exactly matched my specs (fairly cheap, support XP Athlons, DDR *and* SDRAM support, overclockable). The fact it also has onboard networking is useful, onboard sound too (not that I *use* that at all, of course).

Fice - is that an ECS board?  I have an ECS board myself (the K7VZA) and I haven't had any problems with it... it's very nice, especially considering I don't know anyone who's heard of this company.  Supposed to support Athlon XP, so I think I'll upgrade my processor this summer.

GF4 TI 2400?  Do you mean 4200?  I didn't think they had a 2400.  I don't think 4200 is out yet (they have 4400 and 4600, and 4200 is supposed to be out soon if it's not already).

ANYWAY... that's it.

Aaron: Yup, it's an ECS board. I hadn't used a board from them before, but it's been great so far. Nothing to complain about, really.
