I installed Hay's Reasonable Difficulty mod but the wrong enemies are showing in the wrong places when I get to Wutai area in Disc 1. I fought Demon Wall in the Sleeping Forest area for example. (That's just one of many....)

I used Bootleg 0040 and chose the Reasonable Difficulty setting from the menu. Everything was fine until I got to Wutai.

Is something wrong with the core files? What can I do to keep the difficulty mod with AND my save file but just have enemies show up in the right places? Is this salvageable or do I have to start over?

Sounds like you didn't update your KERNEL.BIN file. Either do that or use ProudClod to update your SLUT.

I don't know how to do that, what do I do? Just import the scene.bin in that ProudClod program and it automagically fixes it? That easy?

Sorry huge n00bness here.

Open the scene.bin in ProudClod and tell it to create the scene.bin (in the File menu). Then it will ask if you want to check the KERNEL.BIN SLUT and ask you to point it to the KERNEL.BIN. PrC will inform you if it needs to be changed before it updates it. If you don't get a message that it was wrong then it was fine.

Thanks, NFITC1, that worked!

Can you post me your Bootleg.log found in the game folder? Another person has reported this, so I'd like to see if a certain other mod or mods chosen are interacting with it.

Any mods with different SLUTs in their KERNEL.BINs will have this effect.

Thanks  :)  Ugh, now the bore of going through all the mod archives to find any differences lol

Okay, I'm having a similar problem (I'm probably the other person EQ2Alyza mentioned), and the first issue I'm having with this fix is that I don't see anywhere to download ProudClod as an executable, or otherwise in a form I know what to do with. I can download what appears to be the source code, but what the heck am I supposed to do with that?!? That probably strikes some here as a stupid question, but I am not a programmer or developer and haven't the slightest clue how to get from there to an executable file.

Scratch all that. Didn't notice at first that the title itself was a Sourceforge link.

Further edit: Doing as instructed above, ProudClod gave me the error message "Unable to load DLL 'zlib1.dll': The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)" By the way, as a suggestion for whomever develops ProudClod, it would be nice if error messages like that could be copy/pasted (I typed that in by hand).

It appeared to correct it anyway, and at first I could launch my saved game with no apparent problems, but the first time a battle started FF7 crashed with an error message starting with "Oops! Something very bad happened." This was true whether I went back into the mythril cave, or went the other way and attempted suicide by Midgar Zolem. In addition, both the materia slots and materia themselves in my weapons became invisible, while unused materia in the menus were visible but tended to be the wrong colours.

Further edit: I have tried re-running proudClod with the zlib1.dll in the right place, and it gave a different error saying a parameter was out of range. I chose the option to continue. This had no effect - my game is still unplayable. What can be done about this short of reinstalling everything from scratch?

(In addition to the issues noted already, it also turns out I can't change equipment, in case that helps diagnose the problem.)

I have the latest versions of .net and DirectX, if that's what you mean. I did initially somehow manage to have the .dll in the wrong place, as noted above. Apparently, fixing the problems that caused is not as simple as re-running PC with the .dll in the same directory.

No, it is not. In any case, now that you've got Proud Clod running, you should be able to regenerate your KERNEL.BIN scene look-up index without any problems.

Okay, but how?

Please note, in case this affects the answer in any way, that I am NOT using Bootleg. I'm only posting here because that's where there happened to be the most substantial information about this problem. Bootleg gave me an unplayable game (graphics were nearly all missing) whereas, until this problem came up, just installing the mods I wanted manually seemed to have worked fine.

Not possible. That error is generated by the .NET binaries and I have no control over that.

Fair enough.

Back to the main topic, how does one regenerate the kernel.bin? I'm not a programmer or developer and only vaguely know what that even means, much less exactly what sequence of actions to take in PC to accomplish it.

That sounds like what you suggested in the fourth post above, however, that's what got me into my current mess, and as mentioned above, redoing those steps (after correcting the .dll situation) has repeatedly failed to get me out of it. Bosola agreed that it won't be as simple as repeating those steps, so I assume he or she must therefore have meant something else by "regenerate your KERNEL.BIN scene look-up index". However, I have no idea what that "something else" could be.

Reading your earlier post, it sounds like you might have really messed up your KERNEL.BIN (and possibly SCENE).

You could try restoring the original files and only applying the patches that affect enemies, battle mechanics, equipment and materia, but it might be less risky just to start again. This time, you might be wise to back up your SCENE and KERNEL at certain intervals.

As for the original problem, if I had to guess, I would assume that two mods are trying to apply simple binary diff patches to compressed data. This would corrupt that data. Or it could be something entirely different.

Okay, I guess I
  • Reinstall everything from scratch
  • When doing so, use better backup practises than I did this time, just in case
  • Run PC (properly, from the same folder as the aforementioned .dll) at the first sign of trouble,
  • Hope my saved game isn't beyond redemption, but replay from the start if it is (I'm not that far in, though the initial Midgar scenario is IMO the least interesting part of the game)
Does that about sum it up? You don't see any way anything short of that is going to help?
