Completely Unrelated / Black people can't be valedictorian
« on: 2011-07-27 21:27:11 »
I seem to be posting threads for every news article I find interesting. Anyway...

A school in Arkansas has refused to allow a black girl to be valedictorian, despite having the best academic record, because school administrators feared a "big mess".

Joaquin Guzman, the first billionaire drug lord (as far as we know) has thanked El Presidente Obama and his predecessors for allowing him to follow in the footsteps of Al Capone and create an empire of crime based around puritan prohibition laws:

Quote
I couldn't have gotten so stinking rich without George Bush, George Bush Jr., Ronald Reagan, even El Presidente Obama, none of them have the cajones to stand up to all the big money that wants to keep this stuff illegal. From the bottom of my heart, I want to say, Gracias amigos, I owe my whole empire to you.

Mexican president Felipe Calderon is claimed to have said to the US administration "Why don't they make this shit legal already! You're killing me here!".

Of course, there are far too many vested interests in the US for cannabis to ever be legalised.

Yet Another Market Share Thread!

According to statcounter (which, I'll grant, might be liable to over-representing recent browsing trends), unhackable Chrome has overtaken the cumbersome Firefox in the UK, with a whopping 0.04% lead. A great victory for people who don't like their browsers crashing every 5 minutes and using 12TB of RAM just to browse the qhimm forums! I'm using Chromium, so I'm not sure whether my internet use is counted towards Chrome. If it is, I'm probably single-handedly responsible for this.

Also interesting is the fact that Windows 7 is likely to overtake XP in Japan within the next month or so. Japan is famously fast in adopting certain kinds of technology, but famously slow when it comes to desktop PCs. Internet Explorer's market share might also drop below 50% over there quite soon. Seriously, what is it with Asian countries? Are they stuck in the early 2000s when it comes to computers? Do they hate installing anything? Do they think that the official Microsoft default software must be the best? Does IE's crappiness appeal to their sense of bad web design and hatred of people with epilepsy? At least Japan isn't as bad as Korea, where the government basically enforced IE until recently because of (wait for this; you'll laugh)
Spoiler: show
security
.

netmarketshare tells a much sadder story of IE and XP having over 50% global market share and IE6 still being used by 10% of the world.  I'll pretend that statcounter is more reliable, because I'd have to cry if nms was.

Authorities in the US (where else? ;D) state of Massachusetts are trying to find out how a body lay unnoticed in a swimming pool for more than two days as the public continued to use the facility.

So how about that? There was a body lying at the bottom of the pool for days, whilst people were still using it, and no-one noticed. The woman's friends didn't even notice she was gone. She wasn't found until some teenagers broke in in the middle of the night; apparently, drunken teenagers can see better in the dark than pool staff can when it's light.

I'm beginning to suspect that swimming pool inspectors just don't care about black people.

(to be fair, one young boy did report seeing the body; he was ignored)

Completely Unrelated / Yet more Korea fail
« on: 2011-06-27 18:52:00 »
One wonders how a country with such excellent educational rankings manages to be so stupid.

It would seem that almost half of South Worst Korean high- and middle-school students think that their country's biggest threat is Japan. Best North Korea gets half as many votes and staunch ally the United States gets almost as many as NK. China was regarded as the biggest threat by only  13% of students and less than 1% thought that Russia was the biggest danger.

Quite how Worst Koreans come to the conclusion that the most pacifist country in the developed world is more of a threat to them than the nuclear-armed country that they are still at war with, and that still attacks them, is a mystery. Also a mystery is how they come the to conclusion that the country that is responsible for their continued survival is almost as much of a threat as Best NK.

Are they still stuck in WWII mode? Do they follow the doctrine common amongst third-world fail countries that America is mindlessly evil, tries to trick people at every opportunity and wants to take over the whole world? Are they massively indoctrinated by complete retards? Do some of them sympathise with Kim-Jong?

I personally think that the USA, since it is obviously such a huge threat, should remove all of its troops from Worst Korea and stop all military support for the South (obviously, this military support must be some kind of trick to make them weaker). Perhaps South Worst Koreans would be happier without interference from those evil Americans; they can deal with Kim-Jong's best nukes on their own.

Geert Wilders, the popular Dutch politician, was at risk of becoming a political prisoner for daring to insult someone's imaginary friend. Despite the wishes of those who think that freedom comes second to "not giving offence", Wilders was acquitted of the ridiculous charges against him.

Hopefully, this will set a precedent that will make it harder in future to abuse hate-speech laws (designed to protect people) in order to silence debate about ideologies.

However, we must not forget that it was an abomination that this trial even happened. Perhaps we can say that this is the first step on the road to recovery from the hysteria and race-card-playing that has plagued Europe for the last decade.

Tennessee, a state once represented by the Internet's inventor, Al Gore, has banned "the transmission or display of an image that is likely to 'frighten, intimidate or cause emotional distress to' anyone who sees it".

Quote
"Last Monday, Tennessee's Governer Bill Haslam signed a law prohibiting the transmission or display of an image that is likely to 'frighten, intimidate or cause emotional distress to' anyone who sees it. In Tennessee, it is already illegal to use other methods of communication, such as telephones or e-mail, to offend someone; the new law updates legislation to include images sent or posted online. However, the scope of this law is broader, in that anyone who sees the image is a potential victim. If a court finds that a violator should have known that someone would be offended by the image in question, they face up to a year in prison or up to $2,500 in fines."

I (MICHAEL HARDY) GOT THE IDEA TO CREATE CREATIVE-C++ IN THE YEAR 2000 - BEFORE I HAD VC++. I NEEDED A C/C++ PROGRAMMING DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT THAT WOULD SUIT MY NEEDS. THE ONLY PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE I HAD IN 2000 WAS DELPHI 6 PERSONAL EDITION. SO I FIRED UP DELPHI 6 AND BEGAN WORK ON CREATIVE-C++. IN 2000 MY PROGRAMMING SKILLS WAS VERY LIMITED AND I WAS USE TO USING QUICKBASIC AND TURBO PASCAL. I WANTED TO LEARN C/C++ SO I MADE MY OWN IDE AND IT USES THE MINGW GCC COMPILER SYSTEM AS THE BASIS OF IT'S COMPILER. CREATIVE-C++ HAD SEVERAL NAMES BEFORE IT BECAME CREATIVE-C++. IT WAS NAMED WISHMASTER-C++, AMITYVILLE-C++, BRAINSCAN-C++ AND NOW FINALLY IN 2011 ITS CALLED CREATIVE-C++ WHICH IT WILL REMAIN WITH THAT NAME. IN 2000 I LICENSED THE SOURCE CODE TO CREATIVE-C++ TO BLOODSHED SOFTWARE (COLIN LAPLACE) WHO USED MY CODE TO MAKE DEV-C++. HE HAD SOME GREAT IDEAS FOR THE IDE AND AT THAT TIME IT WAS V4. NOW IN 2011 I REGAINED CONTROL OF MY CREATIVE-C++ GIVE IT MORE FEATURES AND A SKINNABLE INTERFACE AND A NEW TOOL CALLED PACK MAKER. ALL THREE PROGRAMS THAT ARE INCLUDED WITH CREATIVE-C++ (CREATIVEIDE.EXE, PACKMAN.EXE AND PACK MAKER.EXE) ALL HAS A SKINNABLE GUI.

(yes, he ripped of Dev-C++ and then accused the actual creator of ripping him off)

He has other products too!

(Yes, that's his face on the wall)

He has a site for his "foundation", where you can download or buy his crap:

http://www.hardyfoundation.com/products.html

I'm not sure what's more astonishing. Is it the fact that he is stupid enough to take both free and commercial software, including rip-offs of Nintendo games, pretend that he made it, sell it and actually put his name and face everywhere? Or is it the fact that he hasn't been bankrupted by copyright suits yet? Perhaps copyright holders aren't suing him because they feel pity thanks to his obvious learning disability.

Oh for fuck's sake

The contest between the Anglosphere nations to be the most hysterical about paedophilia and sex crimes is becoming more intense.

Recently, the United States, which has been trailing Britain, Australia and Canada for most of the contest, shot into the lead by accusing a six-year-old autistic boy of first degree sexual assault after he was caught playing "butt doctor" with a girl near his own age. Authorities have even raised the prospect that the boy be evaluated as a potential sexual predator and suggested he not be allowed to have any unsupervised contact with children.

Parents keep child's gender secret

For fuck's sake.

I love how these two people try to deny the fact that they're forcing their ideologies onto their children and using their children as an experiment.

I also love how they think that it's the horrible media and "society" that does all the influencing, and assume that they aren't influencing their children. Why do their sons want to wear girls clothes and do girly things? Is it because they're being left alone and not "socialised"? Or is it because their parents, perhaps unconsciously, are expressing happiness when their sons do something that defies the male gender role and the children want to do what makes their parents happy? Hmmm? The parents are idiots if they think that they themselves aren't influencing the choices their children make, and I'll wager they get perverse joy from seeing boys pick out pink dresses (take that, gender norms!).

And I love how their "well-adjusted" older son can't cope with the idea of going to school and they encourage him. Perhaps they want their "well-adjusted" children to live in bubbles, kept away from their peers, never communicating with wider society? When, if ever, will the children be old enough to enter the real world?

I'm now taking bets on which one of the three children will be the first to commit suicide thanks to the hopelessly impractical and idealistic parenting choices these two idiots have made. I say "first", because I think its entirely plausible that all three of these children will grow up with such severe sexual and personality issues as a result of this experiment and their alienation from the world that they end up topping themselves.

First that ten-year-old in nappies with an anger management problem and now this. Canadian parenting isn't looking very good nowadays. Maybe their brains are frozen?

Nintendo has pulled the release of Dead or Alive: Dimensions in the Scandinavian countries thanks to fears that it may fall foul of Swedish CP laws. A Swedish gamer, noticing that a feature allowing the player to ogle girls under the age of eighteen in bikinis might fall foul of Swedish CP laws that outlaw the depiction of under-18s (in Sweden, the Age of Consent is fifteen) in any situation that a jury decides might be sexual, reported the game to the police. In the ensuing chaos, Nintendo told Sweden and even it neighbours, Norway and Denmark, to GTFO. The worrying thing is that the game really could be considered dangerous CP in Sweden and many other Western countries according to their CP laws.

My, my, my. Things aren't looking very good for Sony, are they?

Finnish consumer rights groups and some EU courts have deemed the removal of OtherOS illegal, hackers are running rampant with software hacks that could lead to mass piracy on a console with slim profit margins and PSN has been down for a week.

What's more, it looks like Sony might have lost your credit card information. It has certainly lost a lot of your other personal details.

There's a lesson to be learnt from all of this: don't mess with neckbeards. If you stop us from installing Linux on every electrical or even mechanical device we can find, we'll fuck your shit right up. And by "we", I mean "they".

The only way the PS3 will be able to recover is if it gets some games.

Their opposition to the Mosque in part four was amusing. We should give guns to them and to the people who want to build the Mosque, then let them fight it out. The biggest winner would be society.

I was also amused by the bird shitting on that man's shirt. A message from god, clearly. The message seems to be "STFU".

This documentary raises two questions.

Firstly, why do religious people think they're being discriminated against if they aren't given special privileges? I'm aware that this mentality is common amongst a lot of groups, but it seems to be particularly strong amongst them. They seem to think it's discrimination if they're not allowed to force everyone else to do what they want and to discriminate against people they don't like, or who remind them of aspects of their own personality that they would rather keep hidden in a certain kind of cabinet or small room used for the purpose of hanging clothes.

Secondly, can we ship these idiots off to America like we did in the olden days? Australia used to be the dumping ground for our criminals and America used to be the dumping ground for our fundies*. We should bring those policies back

*inb4 Bosola tells us that the number of fundies who went to America and the number of convicts who went to Australia is exaggerated and that most people emigrated for economic reasons

As part of the new wave of moralfaggotry that is taking over the internet, ED now redirects to a new, shitty, SFW and politically correct site called "Oh Internet". Site owners seem to be under the impression that the best way to take financial advantage of "lulz" culture is to take away the grossly offensive anarchy that made such sites popular in the first place. They just don't get it: places like ED weren't popular in spite of being offensive; they were popular because they were offensive. Sanitising them won't open them up to a new audience; it will make them into boring facebook clones in an already-oversaturated market with no unique selling point. I hope /b/ raids the shit out of this new site and the thing turns into a huge failure.

How long before 4chan redirects to canv.as?

After the dark days of Labour spending £5billion per year on IT (to sound sexy), the Conservative government has decided to review IT policy with the hope of lowering costs. Their IT chief says that the government could save money by not using Windows and going open source. However, he has also expressed concerns that "open source" software might be more easily "hacked" than Microsoft's products, and has said that the government should use more Apple products, which he uses at home.

Actually planes are more unsafe than cars.  I know you have been led to believe otherwise but aviation uses hours and distance you travel and not the journey number.  By journey number this is the death toll:

Deaths per billion journeys
Bus: 4.3
Rail: 20
Van: 20
Car: 40
Foot: 40
Water: 90
Air: 117
Bicycle: 170
Motorcycle: 1640

You are 3X more likely to die on plane.

<< reply to guy on other page.

I think it's quite hypocritical of you to complain about people manipulating statistics when you are doing exactly the same thing yourself, most likely because you like to be contrarian just for the sake of it.

One of the things that sets plane journeys apart from car journeys is that the former are nearly always much longer. Now I know what you're thinking: "BAWWW, plane accidents usually happen at take-off or landing!". That doesn't matter, because car crashes don't usually happen when the car is being started or parked. There's an increased risk of minor accidents at this time, but it isn't when most of the accidents happen. Therefore, the chance of death in a plane doesn't increase much as the journey becomes longer, but the chances of death in a car increases dramatically, to the point where car journeys that last more than a certain amount of time become much more dangerous than plane journeys. These longer journeys, which have a higher risk, are the only ones that are comparable to flights, since these are the only times when one might be unsure as to whether it's better to go by car than plane.

I suggest you think about why these statistics are useful. Your amazing revelation that you're less likely to die in a car trip to the shops than on a long-haul flight to Jakarta does not help someone who is, for example, thinking of the best way to get from New York to Los Angeles. Sure, the average flight has a greater chance of death than the average car ride, but the car ride you'd be taking is not an average one. The flight you'd be taking is an average one, and has an average chance of resulting in death. For any journey that it is appropriate to take by plane, you're many times more likely to die in a car ride than you are on a flight, and that is why planes are regarded as safer.

And while we're at it...

Where did you get those statistics from, Seifie-kun? You are aware that not all countries have equally safe roads or equally safe airspace. If these are British statistics, I suggest you bear in mind that British roads are exceptionally safe by global standards. That death rate per journey might be very different in one of those countries where road laws are seen more as friendly suggestions than actual laws. That is to say, anywhere below 50° latitude north. Most of the world's population lives in these dangerous places, where the sun and heat turn road rage into road madness, and every journey is a game of Russian roulette.

Apple is the greatest innovator in the tech world; all others copy from them.

So it is no surprise that Apple has a new innovation: Launchpad.

With this revolutionary new feature, you can see all of your apps on your desktop. All you have to do is click an icon in your dock. Just think about that for a second: icons on your desktop that you can click in order the launch a program. Isn't that magic?

So, you Windows users might want to switch for this. Who knows how long it will be before Windows has something to match the elegance and power of Launchpad?

This truly has to be the greatest song ever written.

Firstly, the performance is top-notch; listening to her voice, you can hear the result of both prodigious natural talent and years of training. Like a siren, her range and melody transfixes the listener and draws him in to a world of pure aural pleasure.

Secondly, and even more importantly, the lyrics are perhaps the greatest delineation of life and love that have ever been given in the English language. Each line is profound and insightful and displays a mastery of the English language not seen since Shakespeare. It is a pleasure to hear her in full control of the language, shaping it and playing with it to create a work of true literary genius.

But listen to me no longer! Please, listen to the song and you will see why it is taking the world by storm!

Yes, the governor of Tokyo, a notoriously bigoted fuckwit and author of pornographic novels where mentally disabled young girls get violently raped and tortured to death, thinks that the earthquake was divine retribution for Japan's decadence. Shintaro Ishihara has served three terms as governor of Tokyo and this comment, which will go down well with the WWII PoW camp guard who make up 90% of the voting population in Japan, is likely to win him further support as he campaigns for a fourth reign of terror.
