Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The SaiNt on 2001-01-03 11:18:00
Haha, just decided to get the board rolling!
Well, I've just turned 18 today(3rd of Jan)! How old or rather "young" is everyone else here?

It isn't a good idea to reveal your age to unknown people on the Net. But anyway, I'm older than you.

18 from UK ... like it says in my profile. Actually, I'm surprised by how many replies came from UK ... tho that could be due to the time the message was posted?

BTW, does anybody else think the clock on this server is wrong? The times all seem an hour out (and no, we aren't on daylight saving where I am at the moment).

And yes, the times are completely screwed up, seems to be GMT-1 instead of GMT as it says.

25 eh!
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: J*** H******* on 2001-01-04 01:08:00
Yep, me old.  :)

Let's add something to the original question: What is the first notable event (something that was on news, for example) that you remember ? And how old were you when it happened ?

For me it's the Three Mile Island meltdown, evacuation to be more specific. I remember seeing it on television. Unfortunately I can't be sure whether it was live or not. It happened on March 28, 1979 (evacuation took place on 30th). So I was 3 (almost 4) years old when that happened, assuming that it really was live broadcast.

Another thing that I remember were the Moscow Olympics on '80. And that is something that I remember watching live with absolute certainty.

Hmmm, this certainly is 'stuff that doesn't quite fit in elsewhere'.  :D

I don't really remember alot from the old days, but I remember stuff like Chernobyl and the assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme. Mid-80s, those are my only early memories of notable events.

Might be off topic but this is what i remember of my past.
Well, I've had four pc's throughtout my PC life. My first was am XT with those 3 colour displays. At that time, it was wow, 3 colours. It's one on those PC's you have to boot with a boot disc and with 640k of RAM. Then, came my 486SX PC. It had a 1X CD Drive. Now that was power. Next came my Intel 166Mhz Processor with the all powerful S3 Virge Video Card. Hehe, I played FF7PC on it in software mode! 2nd time playing FF7PC, i used a AMD 300Mhz processor with an Nvidia TNT video card. Of late, im using my new 1000 Ghz Athlon with the same TNT video card. Intending to get a geforce later though!

The SaiNt: Oh, old computers. I've had few of those myself.  :)

Spectravideo SVI-728 MSX
Lots of cool games by Konami. Very good Basic (if compared to C-64). 3.58 MHz.  :)

Commodore Amiga 500
Nice comp, but troubled by massive piracy. No less than 4096 colors, although usage of so-called HAM graphics was very rare. Has some excellent games, like Stunt Car Racer, Dungeon Master etc.

My 1st PC: 386DX@25 MHz. 4 MB's of RAM and 52 MB hard drive with 19 ms seek time (it was really fast). 256 KB SVGA graphics gard. Sound Blaster added later.

2nd PC: AMD 486@120 MHz. 16 MB RAM, 1 GB hard drive, 1 MB S3 Trio 64. Same Sound Blaster. 4X CD-ROM added later.

3rd PC: P200MMX (overclocked to 250), 96 MB RAM, 3.8 GB disk, Hercules Dynamite 128 and later Matrox Millennium 2 + Voodoo. SB 16 and 4X CD-ROM. SCSI CD-ROM and CD-R added later. Used as server nowadays.

4th PC: Celeron 300A@472 (or 495), 128 MB, 18 GB, cheap 8 MB TNT, later GeForce 2 GTS, SB Live!, same SCSI stuff except DVD-drive added.

Amy: Okay, well my mistake!

Anyway, I don't find why FF8PC requires more processing power than FF7PC. I mean their both based on the same system, right?

BTW, Qhimm you still havent told us your age!
Come on, no harm done right?

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: cHiBiMaRuKo on 2001-01-06 12:59:00
The FF8PC FMVs will choke slower computers ( stuttering problems etc. ), I've experienced it myself. FF7 FMVs is on AVI format, so not too much processing power are needed.
Hmm, my computer is nearly the same as Amy:-

256MB RAM
GeForce2 Ultra 64MB
40GB x 2 Maxtor HDD.

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The SaiNt on 2001-01-06 15:35:00
No, i meant in normal play not the FMV's
I meant like in the world map.
Actually, FF7PC's world map looks better and is not blocky unlike it counterpart FF8PC. The worldmap for FF8PC also runs slower too.

Well, here's what i have now,
256 MB SDRAM
50X Aopen CD Drive
ABIT KT7 Raid Motherboard
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1000Mhz @ 1150Mhz
20.4GB Quantum AS20(7200 rpm)
8.4GB Quantum Fireball ST(5400 rpm)
2.1GB Quantum Bigfoot(5400 rpm)
Asus AGPV3400 TNT (TNT chipset) 16MB SDRAM w tv out
SBLive Value

FF8 World Map is slow! I notice it too. It's due to only one thing; bad programming.

Couldn't really do anything about that. Eidos do a better job than EA, so I do think that Square should let them make the future FF games for PC at least.

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: Srethron Askvelhtnod on 2001-01-06 21:59:00
Actually, if the quality of Square's games begins/continues to deteriorate, I'd rather a company with a rep for excellence (like Blizzard) took over the actual FF series (not the ports).

Edit: Something wasn't clear.

You simply don't get it, do you? (sorry, but this is a question that just keeps on coming)

EA and Eidos have nothing to do with the programming, they simply publish the game. FF8 was ported to PC by a team of Square programmers.

Hi guys, try this   :)
FFVIII Configuration: Performance Option:
Click on!
(No World Map Color Animation) & (No World Map Fog)

By the way I have two hard drives:  20 GB & 50 GB which add up to be 70 GB!
50 GB for Windows ME and Microsoft Programs!
20 GB for PC Games and Etc.

Furthermore, is there anyway I can change FFVII PC FMV's format beside AVI?

well u can turn the avi into stuff, like wmv. my current pc is a crappy 32MB RAM, 4GB, 233mhz. ARGH! u dont want to know about my past computers. hmm, lets see. the last thing i remeber was last night. me and my mate were setting eachother challenges on thps 2. its really fun! if youve got it, we made eachother do stuff like jump over the building with the drainege pipe in philly, and do big combos and stuff.
well again, this doesnt quite fit anywhere else.

id like to remind you guys/girls:
if i showed you a picture of the ff8 psx world map and then one of the ff8 world map on the pc, id think youd understand how i feel about this topic  :x!
ff8psx's world map leaves the pc version for dust! i mean comeon square! whyd the hell did you 'drop' the quality? and why the heck is it so slow? ever heard of...  hmm...
whats that term? the one where you load up only the graphics inthe viewable area? and the non-veiwable area arnt loaded? (like out of your view areas, behind mountains, etc)
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The SaiNt on 2001-01-07 16:01:00
Qhimm is right though on EIDOS and EA as they only publish it and have nothing to do with porting it.
Come on, EIDOS does a good job porting Tomb Raider all the time, why the heck do you think they would make a lousy port
Besides EA and EIDOS both make quite good games in terms of graphic quality and sound quality i mean.

Actually, here's a list of stuff that should be done for the FF's on PC
1.Resolution's of up to 1600x1200 should be supported (i mean it is only a matter of rendering the textures at a higher res)
2.Movies should be in high res (FF8's ones were quite sufficient)
3.The backgrounds should be rendered in at least 640x480 not stretched out from psx format.
4.The world map should be smooth (I mean like FF7 not like the blocky FF8 world map.
5.Audio for background music should be done in soundtrack cd audio style and be independant of the sound card.
6.PC users should be given the choice of unlimited save game space. (save state might be a good idea but it might spoil gameplay)
7.Full install should be allowed, i mean if PC users have lots of hard disk space, let them use it. (actually this allows better flexibility in editting the game)
8.The game should not only be ported exactly (for eg: DirectX has quite good water effects that can be applied rather than using the normal psx's water effects)
9.Text should also be done in high res (like FF7 not like FF8's lousy low res text, even the high res text looks low res)
10.More Squaresoft games should be ported like FFT, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Legend of Mana. (I mean the PC market has an extremely huge and potential market so it's a good idea to take advantage of it)

The Skillster:

Indeed. FF7's world map looked nicer and ran faster on my P250MMX + Voodoo than FF8's map does on my Celeron with GF2. I wonder what they must have done to slow it down so badly.

The SaiNt:

1. Agreed. Although I could live perfectly happily with 1024x768 there's no real reason to stop there, games like NFS: Porsche Unleashed and Supreme Snowboarding can do resolutions like 2048x1536.

2. Yep. FF8 had perfectly good movies, but if they want to go bit further they could use MPEG-2 with very high bitrates, as DVD does. Note: FF8's videos do have pretty high bitrate already, IIRC.

3. Of course. 640x480 is good enough, especially if they want to save some space.

4. And it should also move smoothly.

5. With mp3's, preferably. I mean that FF8 has enough music to fill 4 CD's... Of course DVD would hold more. But I think that Winamp's CPU usage is somewhere around 2 or 3 percents in P2's, so good mp3 player shouldn't really slow the game down.

6. Actually, I'm happy with the way it is.

7. You can do that with any game, kind of. Just make images of your discs and use DAEMON Tools (or something similar) to load that image as virtual CD-ROM. Won't help with editing, naturally.

8. Naturally. (I'll take your word about using PSX's effects, as I know nothing about that)

9. I can live with the text as it is, I can read it from far, far away.  :D

10. I wouldn't mind that at all. But for the PC market... Does anyone know sales figures for FF7 and FF8 PC versions ?

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: Srethron Askvelhtnod on 2001-01-07 23:25:00
The SaiNt: I agree completely.

Jari Huttunen: I have no actual data, but I seem to remember reading that FF7PSX outsold all of Square's previous games on opening day. The same report said that FF7PC went a step further on its opening day by surpassing FF7PSX's opening day sales.

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: cHiBiMaRuKo on 2001-01-08 00:10:00
...and for some additional info, FF8 PC also sell very well, and also kick Unreal Tournament from the no.1 game sales chart in January and February 2000, a feat that even Quake 3 Arena could not do.

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: Srethron Askvelhtnod on 2001-01-08 02:17:00
Well that's because UT was better than Q3 (unless you judge a game solely on graphics).
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The Skillster on 2001-01-08 02:30:00
the saint: you must be joking?
i would buy 2 copies of ff9/10/11 if they had all of that in them!
square wont do too much extra in porting the games, maybe when they get to ps2 they might to a better port  :)

you know the ff7 and ff8 backdrops werent direct from the psx! ff7 is only alittle more detailed (fire up vgs/bleem to find out) and ff8 is a bit more detailed to (but the filtering sucks)

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The SaiNt on 2001-01-08 16:47:00
This topic is really getting off-topic..............
Skillster :Anyway i have Bleem ,VGS and Espxe I've tried all of them the quality difference is barely noticable. Sometimes I think Square really undermines the users of the PC market. Maybe it's cause they have enjoyed a monopoly on the PSX for too long a period of time.
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The Skillster on 2001-01-08 18:54:00
agrred, i think we should all sign some sort of petition or letter of complaint addressed to square, telling them how as ff7/8 users feel cheated, and ripped off (maybe), and how their ports are getting worse, etc
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: Srethron Askvelhtnod on 2001-01-08 20:08:00
I'd sign that. Although, the porting is only part of the problem. The game quality of the FF series since 7 has also gone down.
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: eerrrr on 2001-01-08 20:51:00
the Skillster: was the word pop-ups?

you're right. the quality of ff7-ff8 dropped. the story was no where near as good,
like it didnt have the twists of ff7. i mean just take a look at the  Sephiroth  post, it shows that there was an amazing amount of story detail in ff7. ff8's just a load of soceress', knights and monsters. what about ff9? i havent tried it yet.

Read the post "Best Squaresoft RPG of 2000".
From reading it, I've drawn the conclusion that FF9 is better than FF8, but gameplay is still lackluster compared to other games in the series. Square definately seems to have its priorities mixed up.

ANd I agree the quilitie of ff games is geting silly. The sucess with FFVII must have gone to there heads.
And once I get a web page editer(dream weaver) Im gonna start makeing a FFIX pc petion site. It will probley be crap though.

Sir Canealot: What's so special about Dreamweaver anyway? I prefer Notepad to any html editor I've come across so far.

Cuddles Wing: Actually, I've heard some distant rumblings (Daily Radar) that Square may shift platforms to either X-Box or Gamecube in the near future.

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: NightStar on 2001-01-09 03:45:00
I doubt they'll bother with FF9 on the PC CuddlesWing.  FF8 was bug ridden to say the least, (But hell, it was fun!) and was not wlcomed as much as FF7 was...

I think everybody is just going to cut their losses, and skip the PC.  It'll be much easier!

One thing though - The US and Jap versions of FF9 are supposed to work on ePSXe...  In case you are interested!

Well, Ged I too have had my dose of biology though i don't do any of it now. The only difference was i learnt it in my local language(Malay) so my spelling for English isnt always right. Bacteria, patogens, viruses....................
Anyway here's something off-topic though.
How many people here are from the EIDOS forums. I was from there too, just that i used a different username. I used my original name, zhenjock when i was there.

Heard boncer is crap CRAP CRAP!
And im gonna use dream weaver for the web page cause it is piss easy. I have heard for a link you just right clik on it and select link or something....

The SaiNt: I'm not from that forum.

Sir Canealot: I believe that is a standard feature of a lot of html wizards. For instance, the free Netscape Composer that comes with Netscape. In it, you can either right-click and select "make link", or you can just click the big "Link" button at the top of the screen. (Let me say again that I don't recommend using an html wizard to create your pages. Notepad is better than any I've come across.)
So... what makes Dreamweaver worth $200+ bucks? And is Fireworks any good?

And since everyone seems to want this to go completely off topic... Does anyone know of a program that will convert .bmp to JPEG without distorting the image?

For basic HTML coding, Notepad is a good choice. But when it comes to using complex HTML coding ( nested tables, CSS, DHTML etc. ), it's better to use programs like Dreamweaver and Homesite. And Dreamweaver Student Edition is cheaper than standard ones.

A good program to convert bitmaps to JPEG pics is to use ACDSee. Programs like Adobe Photoshop also can, but usually such programs don't show the effects of the conversion right away. With ACDSee, you can preview what will happens if you convert the bitmaps to jpeg and to take appropriate actions such as decreasing compression etc. before starting the conversion process. And they do batch processing too. Neat program!

Hmmm ... I coded my site entirely in Notepad, and that uses DHTML (tho mostly Java, I'm afraid ... still working on that). You do get better results, IF you know HTML well. I tried using a proper editor, and it just annoyed me that I couldn't tweak everything just how I wanted. Now I use it just for the HTML reference  :)
They are good when you're starting out tho.

fireworks is a waste of time, very hard to do anything that takes have the time in something simpler like paint shop pro (and that has batch processing into anyformat)

For the best web design tool, I say that it is Dreamweaver 3.0 (I haven't tried 4.0 yet)
The best graphics tool is Paint Shop Pro 5.0 (Haven't tried the latest) as you get to  convert a Pic into many different formats and you even get to dertermine the compression ratio.

This is getting way off-topic. We might actually break the 100 posts for the 2nd time(1st time was the soundfonts one i think). Anyway, I prefer Adobe Photoshop 6.0 to Paint Shop Pro. I'm not saying that dreamweaver is not good. It's just that notepad allows more control over the webpage.

Title: How old is everyone?

Illustrator only looks and feels like photoshop cause its made by the same company. Photoshop does what its name says and is better at photo editing. Illustrator is better for people starting from scratch. Besides Illustrator format is required for certain 3d programs.

psp7's good, but its the only one i really use. im doing my ubb pics with it. i used net objects to do my site, but i then have to get the html, compress it, edit it and stuff to get it somewhere close to good. notepad's good, but you need html knowledge for it. yeah ficedula, your sites great but the java makes my pc run REALLY slow, but i think u know how crap my pc is anyway.

Eerrr: People shouldn't be asked to give away their age if they don't want to. And I do know NightStar's age BTW...

This thread had gone way offtopic by the time NightStar joined anyway I think, and I for one stop to visit threads that span multiple pages, they're simply too hard to follow.

I like the small threads that starts, with five ontopic posts, then followed by ten completely offtopic, and then everyone find new threads to contribute to.

So you have my vote for closing this one.

I'm from the Eidos Forum . . . but I haven't been hanging around here to much.  Just dropping by tonight . . .

. . . This is the exact same thing that happened to the age topic at the Eidos Forum.  It went way off topic, and became the most bloated thread in the forum.  It ended up being over 1000 posts, spread across five parts before it actually died . . .

. . .BTW: I'll be 18 in two months.

(too bad I joined this discussion late:  ther're so many comments I could've made back when the discussion was on system specs . . . Aww, what the heck.  My box:
900MHZ AMD Athlon T-bird
A-Bit KT7 Raid Motherboard (Apollo KX133 Chipset)
one 128 Meg PC133 DIMM (although I think the bus speed is only 100MHZ)
Asus AGP V7700 GeForce2 GTS /w 32Megs of DDR RAM
SBLive!
15gig, 7200 RPM, Ultra ATA100 Maxtor HDD)

Yeah, the bus speed which your RAM runs at is 100Mhz unless you increase in the BIOS
Since you didn't overclock your processor, I can assume its running at 100Mhz.

It is running at 100MHZ . . . Yeah well, PC133 and PC100 cost the same, so it's no big deal.

EDIT:

Oh yeah- My box, in all its glory, still cannot run the World map of FF8 at full speed.  Damn Squaresoft's bad programmers . . .

But the Soundfont Thread had useful info in it.....too bad it got deleted.

I don't really remember when, or how, I first stumbled onto this site.....I think I found it when I was search for a way to load Soundfonts onto FF8....I think I found   http://ffsf.cjb.net/  's site then linked over to Qhimm's....I believe someone by the name, "Stiletto", from the Eidos forum, told me about the Soundfont site....and the Griever project....

Hmm....I guess I found Qhimm's site because someone put a link up of it in the Eidos Forum....although, I'm pretty sure I knew of this site a few months before that.....Oh hell.....what difference does it make....I can't remember clearly....I must be getting Alzheimer's or something.

The only thing I can remember from back then, was that the Forum was really hard to follow.....it was one of those tree branching type forums. I made a few post/questions and moved on......

And I believe....if memory serves....Qhimm had a thread where.....that told where the name "Qhimm" was derived from.....and I ain't telling

Speaking about Athlon...I wished I had an Athlon Thunderbird! Well, I'd go for a Pentium 4...  :D

Ha! I am sooooo embarred to say that mabye I have the slowest PC on earth!

Pentium Pro 200mhz
32 MB EDO ECC RAM
S3 Trio AGP Card (4 MB)
36k Modem
A very COMMON RAM Booster (not in the hardware specs  :))
Win 98 (I should have at least a 64 MB RAM PC to own Win 98) *oh..why bother*

Playing FF 8 and BG 2 on this PC is mighty SLOW...so..I'd prefer FF7 and BG.

Well, since the thread is already too long...

PC 1) 386 20Mhz, 512K graphics card, 4MB RAM, 40MB hard disk, Dos 6/Win 3.11 (The Doom Machine)

PC 2) P75, 24MB RAM, 1MB S3 Trio, 260MB hard disk, Dos6/Win3.11, SB16 compatible. (The Quake Machine)

PC 3) K6-II 500, 192MB RAM, 16MB Savage 4, SB Live!, Win98, 56K modem, 100MBit network card, Miro DC30 video capture/edit card, 20GB hard disk, 10X DVD drive. (The Kick-Ass Machine)

However the first two are back home ... can't exactly bring *everything* to uni!

Yeah...My sister said something about Qhimm's name...Kim

Well if you see say "Qhimm!" a few times..you would say something like "Kill Him!"
 Hey...a 386...I had a 486 once.. 8MB Ram I guess...I was quite fast BACKKKK then....  :D

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: Threesixty on 2001-01-17 05:23:00
Yup...that's what I remember.....

oops...I misspelled, "Qhimm" on the last post.....guess I can blame the "U", after "Q", rule on that one.

Lets see....
I had a Tandy 1000EX....my first, so called, computer...really my Mom's at the time, but I took it over. LOL. Used it mainly for writing book reports and stuff like that for Highschool.
My dad picked up a 286 from his work a good number of years later........I had no idea what it was back then...I learned a lot about computers off of this one. I upgraded it to a 486 33mhz DX, a year later. I paid a computer store to do it and it cost me 1000 dollars at the time.....why? Well besides the obvious, the high price could have been because this was done, when the RAM factory in Japan got hit by an Earthquake and at the time it was the only place that Ram was made. I shouldn't have upgraded....but I was young. Two years later I upgraded the CPU to a 66DX2. Somewhere in between I enrolled onto Prodigy....the Internet came to Prodigy about 1 year later.
Three years later I got this PB 200mmx for 900 dollars, without monitor; four week before the P2's came out. Some time within the first year I put in a 64meg stick in it, which brought the total to 80megs, and a Voodoo2 card. Sometime within the second year I put in a SB live card and a US Robotics 56k modem. I had to get the modem. The original Card was a Soundcard/Modem Combo.....Now into the third year with this P200....

Currently looking.....and waiting....for a highpowered, low priced computer. I refused to get burned a third time. I'll either buy it from the bottom up or buy one of those bare bone systems and build from there. I'm currently waiting to see what Motherboards are coming out for the new 166FSB DDR Athlons. I'm waiting for either Abit or Asus to come out with one.

The P4 are twice as expensive and the CPU isn't as fast as the Athlon, even though the Gig mark is higher .....look at this article. The only thing keeping P4 afloat, is it's Rambus memory:

Post by: Srethron Askvelhtnod on 2001-01-17 07:10:00
Threesixty: One question. Concerning your comment about RDRAM (Rambus). Are you saying that the company is the only thing keeping the P4 afloat because of its recent "political" maneuverings that make DDR RAM a tough call for retailers? Or are you saying that RDRAM is keeping the P4 afloat because of it's high quality when compared to DDR? Just not sure what you meant. I personally don't care much for RDRAM, and don't recommend using it...

I don't know about the politics of the DDR and Rambus....to tell you the truth I never heard of DDR memory, until recently. I knew what Rambus was for some time now ...and I knew that it was very pricy.

But based on that review........it looks to me; that the faster performance of the Rambus, and the 400mhz FSB that the P4 uses to keep up with it's Rambus memory, is what's keeping the P4 above water.

According to that review the Athlon still performs better than the P4 at higher graphic resolutions. I'm totally gussing, but I'd say that the Athlon 1.2gig CPU is superior to the Intel 1.5gig CPU. But the speed of the Ram and the Highway it's using, (the 400mhz FSB) is why the P4 is giving better results on that "Quake3", 640X420 benchmark. I imagine that the DDR sees no or very little added benefits above a 166mhz Front Side BUS and that's why AMD chose that Motherboard speed. And I'm sure that the Rambus needs every bit of that 400FSB and that's why Intel chose their MB speed. Although I'm just speculating.

You would think that AMD would play a numbers game with Intel....but it doesn't look like they are going to....well....at least not yet.

Another thing that I'm curious about, is whether Rambus memory is stable? I have a feeling that the DDR memory is stable....although I have no idea whether DDR truly is, or isn't.

RAMBUS is a very tricky thing; although it has very high bus speed it also has much higher latency than regular (or DDR) SDRAM. That combined with the unbelievable price tag makes it rather poor choice (although only possible with P4), IMHO. Looks like it helps performance on some cases and hinders it on others. I think that RAMBUS is stable, but some of it's implementations (like the infamous i820 chipset) are not.

DDR simply means Dual Data Rate. It's called that because it transfers data on rising _and_ falling edges of clock pulse. Effectively giving twice as much memory bandwidth. NOTE: I'm really annoyed by manufacturers who talk about 333 MHz DDR RAM if the regular was 166 MHz. It still is 166 MHz, god damn it!  :D It just transfers twice as much data at that speed.

About P4's performance: It can't compete with Thunderchicken or even P3 at same frequency, if the code is not optimized for it. It's supposed to reach much higher clock speeds than the competition with it's really really long pipeline. It will be competitive if it can do that (and programs are optimized for it), but if AMD gets it's Athlons to higher than expected speeds P4 is in trouble.

They are all so bogus doesnt everyone remember all the hype about the MMX but it only really worked when optimized for code.. it sucked cuz not everything was written for it.. but it still cost like hella.

Well regardless....I'm gonna wait a little longer....I'm placing the Morrowind's game release, as my decision date.
By then, X-box will be out....If Xbox is cheap and if Morrowind goes to X-box unchanged from the PC version, then I'll decide to keep this old computer and buy the X-box....

If not, I'll make the plunge on a new system.....

It also depends if I'll ever take work home with me. So far I haven't....

And then there is one more little factor. The 'spree of the moment' factor. The one that tells you to screw it....and you end up screwing yourself. You never know when that one's gonna hit. :D

Well, Intel only release the RDRAM cause they wanted to divide the market completely in to two. With them having a larger market share, they thought this would help them win more market share as more people would have to think twice before supporting AMD. Anyway, they have recently announced that they will be supporting the DDR RAM format in the near future. The RDRAM is a stupid and poor implementation of technology and I believe if Intel continues doing so, they are gonna be crushed by AMD. The good thing about AMD is that they always seek to protect the older and poorer people of the market, like the Socket 7 case. They have never believed in monopolizing the market. Intel has been in monopoly for too long and some competition is good for them.

Speaking about processors, my 1000Mhz processor just got burned this morning so I'm using my K6-2 300 now. The processor fan got jammed and i didnt notice it till the processor burned. Now I've got to wait about 1-2 weeks to get a replacement from AMD due to the Chinese New Year holidays. Anyway, i'll probably give me time to look into the FF7 geometry format.

Ouch! No hardware monitoring ?

PS. My new P3 700 sucks when it comes to overclocking; it won't go over 868 on my Abit BE-6 and only 933 on my friends insanely overclockable BF-6. Why did I have to get the bad one.  :(

RAM BUS!!!  :D

Overclocking a PC!!!  :D

Overclocking is looking for danger. Nolah, just kidding..Overclocking is fun! I tried to overclock my PC once...tapi tak jadi...

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The SaiNt on 2001-01-17 17:07:00
There is hardware monitoring but you see, AMD processors are different from Intel ones.
Intel processors tend to give off signals that they are overheating by bringing up blue screens or halting the PC. New Athlon processors, (because of AMD's ingenius methods) can still run in an overheated enviroment. This makes them able to burn themselves out while running. Besides, i have the temp sensors on my taskbar but it wasnt me using the PC, my dad was using it.

Threesixty: I can't check to see if it's still there because my firewall blocks me from the site.  :x But at http://www.pcgamer.com/  follow the link to the Q&A section and the guy usually has a link in the Q&A that addresses the pros and cons of RDRAM and why he doesn't recommend it.

The SaiNt: I agree. Well, hopefully we can get some stuff done, then.

Jari Huttunen: You wouldn't know anything about overclocking a laptop, would you?

. . . I guess you could call me too careful.

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: J*** H******* on 2001-01-18 02:41:00
Srethron: Yes; that it's quite difficult, if not impossible.  :D There are few reasons why they are so difficult to overclock:

1) Custom built motherboard. They are built specifically for certain purpose. So there's very small change that clockspeed could be manipulated by jumpers, much less bios. It's likely that they used oscillator that is soldered directly to motherboard. Replacing that oscillator with faster could lead to all kinds of consequences, from interesting to catastrophic, depending on things that get their speed from it.

2) Heat dissipation. Laptop is not exactly the easiest thing to cool. It's very small and not really ventilated at all.

It's best not to try overclocking it, at least until you have something to replace it with.  :)

A pity. I figured that was the case, but thought I'd ask. Well... I *could* try to overclock my 386.  :D
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: Caddberry on 2001-01-18 11:17:00
I think the only way i could overclock mine would be in the jumper settings... cuz its locked up in my bios (P III 550) Phoenix bios... forget the version # though. but i still got my old p III 450 chip lying around here somewhere.

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The Skillster on 2001-01-18 19:52:00
overclocking will only take you as high as the motherboard will allow, in your case srethron, i dont think your board even supports 486! so i dont think itll ever get past 33to50 mhz!
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: Srethron Askvelhtnod on 2001-01-18 20:14:00
The Skillster: A friend of mine has some old motherboards for his dead 486 and Pentium 75 lying around. I thought I'd replace the 386's board with one of 'em, fiddle with the settings, turn it on, and call 911.
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The Skillster on 2001-01-18 21:07:00
hmm, i doubt a 486 motherboard can take a 386. there are different pin arrangements.
i was messing with 486's last year.
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: The Skillster on 2001-01-18 21:10:00
911, yep those cpu's get mighty hot. ALL cpu's should have heat sinks+fans - in my opinion. have you ever touched a 486 while its running? ouch!
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: dagsverre on 2001-01-18 22:12:00
On the side note, if you created a 486 with today's technology it would probably be stone cold (due to the massively decreased size).

If you want a premade system....I think this site is pretty good . I'm waiting for the DDR Athlon to get on the list...it's not there right now.....Look at the difference in CPU price for the P4 1.4gig and the Athlon 1.2gig. They also have the Asus A7V motherboard....I wonder if it's the revision with the Dip switches.

Yay, we've reached the 5th page!!!

Since the page it so long already, I might as well suggest something, let's visit each others web pages(for those who have web pages) and we'll all comment on it one by one. This should keep the thread going on even longer!
Let's start with my page! http://www.finalfantasyfanatics.net
Actually, I haven't updated my site in ages but I do have a new beta one in my hard disk. I'm not intending to upload it till I'm fully done with it. Just a habit of mine.

I agree with Cadberry on both counts. The site's cool, but I'm also using an ISP with a banner, which creates problems. It also loads somewhat slowly, but I assume that's because I'm in the US. I'm about to release my web hub, but I'd like to finish it up first.

Ah, actually some people that have seen my site have complained about it to, but it's only a minority group. Anyway, the only reason I made it full screen was that being LAZY, that was the easiest way to fit the content into an 800x600 resolution without rethinking the layout structure. I might add an option to switch between modes but not anytime soon.

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: ryasko on 2001-01-20 09:12:00
I created the site "ffpchelp.com" because I was tired of going into newsgroups and seeing people posting questions for the same problem over and over.  So I decided to make a website.  The first one was  Homestead .  Then I got serious about it and had the name registered at Register.com (and had to pay for it).  Then someone I know offered me some web space, so I took advantage of it.

How much more obvious hint can there be ?!?   :D Shame on you for not getting it.   :D

Qhimm: Silly ones always get lots of posts, observe FFO's General Chat (or any other board with very high member count) for few days and it's pretty obvious.

Although there is probably more important reason for the high post count: this is a topic that everyone can participate, unlike some topics on programming/tweaking/hardware etc. Pretty much everyone knows their age, after all.  :)

Ha!  :D

My life's record...I was born on 18 October 1986...I am twins with my sister Ceara Wong, I myself is named Simon Wong. We made names out of our initials. Ceara Wong(CuddlesWings)and Simon Wong(StrayWings).
I have been on this board not so long ago, actually I was attracted to my sister's exploits on this UBB Board, she says this board is cool! She plays FF7, she doesn't really like FF8..I like FF8 but not as much as I like playing FF7. The games I play includes Starcraft, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Commandos II, Silver *short game*, and Heroes III *cool game*.
Me and my sister are Prefects at school. The schools here in Malaysia are nothing compared to the schools in the West.
My favrioute place in the world is Japan. I would really like to go the sometime. Hong Kong is quite a nice place too *got a lot of pretty girls there*
 My computer specifications are:
Pentium Pro 200mhz, 32 MB EDO ECC RAM, 20x CD ROM Drive...36.6kpbs Modem...well, that's about the hardware specs...this computer is a family computer.
One thing I know why this thread has many posts, it's because people can post free subjects more like chatting, it's great. I just hope Qhimm will not delete this thread... :( It has made so much good for people  :(
So, how is everybody doing? I hope all of you guys are fine and healthy. Chinese New Year at my place was nice.
Well, that's it for this post. See you guys later in other posts.

SAD! It seems that some people here need to get a life! Sorry but it needed to be said  :)
There are many ways to get a life as listed below:
1) Get off your computer and go OUTSIDE!
2) Be SOCIABLE to people.
3) Under NO circumstances so you use words like LOL instead you LAUGH.
..the list goes on and on  :D

I listen to all kinds of music. Really. To sum up, I listen about equally much to these genres:

Classical - Beethoven, Back, Vivaldi

Jazz: Mostly Blue Note, Miles Davis, various stuff I pick up...

Rap: Us3, Fun Lovin' Criminals (both of these are a little jazz related, I don't listen much to pure rap)

Uncatagorizable: Portishead for instance...

Funk: Jamiroquai (not much), Morphine

Rock and related guitar playing stuff: Many Norwegian pure rock bands, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Creed

Metal: Rhapsody, Sentenced, Children of Bodom (two last ones are Finnish, Jari?)

Techno: Good old amiga MOD files, Unreal Tournament soundtrack

...and of course Uematso!

All of these are examples from the top of my head, not even the best music I have on my
6GB CREATIVE NOMAD JUKEBOX  MP3/WMA PLAYER

The only genre I don't listen to will have to be hit-list music (which in Norway means Britney, Anastasia and worse), but then again that is the music played at parties up here so I guess I listen to that too in a way.

Music... mmmm... I don't listen music that much, on purpose that is, but I often have something on the background. Pretty much everything will do, _except_ boy bands. And some of the girl bands + certain names from the charts, like Britney and Christina for example.

Since this topic is already so off-topic, lets add something else to pull it closer to the 'about you' topic.
What's your real name and how do you you pronounce it?
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: dagsverre on 2001-02-02 16:24:00
Hehe...no I'm not into drugs, however I am a musician. Played the piano for five or six  years and also played a lot in a band. Actually I think I listen to a lot of similar music, I don't find it all that strange. You can find something in common in all my music I think.

So I tend to appriciate a lot of different music, I listen to all different kinds as long as it is a little originality and good musicians behind it.

I hate bybands as well...of course. And my real name? Dag Sverre Seljebotn. I don't have a nick. I pronounce it straight ahead in my language, Norwegians get it right at once (it's common names), don't know exactly how to explain it in English. I know the meanings of the words as well, even though noone care any more about the meanings of names here than in English-speaking countries:

Dag = day

Sverre = if I go about 1000 years back (to the vikings), before it was shortened, it would have been Sverdawarjar, which is the same work as in English (common ancestor language): Sverre = Sverdawarjir = Swordwarrior

Seljebotn: Actually two words, Selje is a tree, Botn is the english word "bottom", meaning a valley. So, a valley full of Selje-trees. It's a specific valley on the west-coast of Norway, been there many times...my father grew up there.

Oh, I forgot to post my name!

Well my real name is

Lau Zhen-Jock

For those of you with GB2312 enabled browsers, my name is written in Simplified Chinese as

Áõ Õñ ׿
(pronounced Liu Zhen Zhuo in Mandarin)

I don't think anyone can pronounce my family name wrongly, right? But just in case Lau is pronounced La-ou. My surname is just a surname and has no written meaning in the chinese language.

Zhen is pronounced as Jurn with not too much emphasis on the letter r. This word means exersion/enthusiasm

Jock is pronounced as J-ock? Basically is pronounced exactly the way the brits' call Jock's. This word means eminent / outstanding / remarkable.

When put together, my name means that have to exert and work with enthusiasm to achieve outstanding performance.

eerrrr: I'm not surprised you haven't heard of them. They're pretty much underground. If you're one of those Napster users, they've usually got some stuff by them on there.

Dag Sverre: Rub it in why don't ya. Those things cost $500. Nevertheless, I'll have one someday.

Caddberry: My musical taste is quite diverse as well. I like Shock Rock, Metal (Black/Unblack, Death), Gothic, Industrial, Techno, Dance, Alternative, Punk (mostly old school, but some new school), Hardcore, Classical, Rock, Ska, Rapcore. I don't much care for a lot of the mainstream stuff (rap, Britney/Nsync style stuff gets two thumbs down).

I played the piano for a couple years when I was younger. Now I do bass guitar and drums.

You guys wanna know why this topic is getting slow???
It's cause nobody has thought of good enough off-topic thing for everyone to share.
Why don't I suggest something to add on to it?
How about, tell us about how do you think the condition of this board will be in 40-50 years from now? Will you still be posting although your well above 80??
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: dagsverre on 2001-02-06 20:26:00
This board won't exist in 50 years. There is a chance, but I for one consider that as as theoretical chance only.

For one thing, people nowadays seem to take the world of today for granted. However, it's only been like this for the last hundred years or so, and even in those years we've had two world wars. 50 years? That's plenty of time for a  even a post-apocalyptic world to rise. I don't think we should take it so extremely for granted that things will stay on the same track. Perhaps people discover that there's isn't really any point behind technology. Perhaps the machines take over (this is with an ironic smile, I don't think there's anything to be afraid of).

Even if things doesn't get as drastical, I don't think we will stay on the same track. I do believe that today's capitalistic society isn't here to stay, but that's probably because a part of me is against it...all the buying pressure, all the giants squeezing every last drop out of the commercial-brainwashed consumer. And also, 20% of the humans living on the work of the other 80%. And coorperation leaders earning more than the working people, even if the working people work harder. You might have stamped me as a communist by now, but don't fear, I tend to be reasonable and I absolutely see the advantages of a free market. I haven't really taken a firm stance, I just see that things are wrong as they are today. I'm also very for free speech BTW, there's no way I'm ever going to support forced communism.

The bottom line is, I think the world will change. Even if nothing of what I have described above is true, people won't log on to a board in the future...just look on how the user interfaces have improved in the last ten years. With this speed, we'll have way better ways of communicating than some hacked UBB Perl/HTML board in 50 years.

And with that as a basis, predicting the results of this board in 50 years is difficult to say the least. It can of course exist for a while, being updated to other formats as they arrive. But, things like Usenet is much more likely to survive in some way. I'm more optimistic for alt.games.final-fantasy.rpg as such than this board.

eerrrr: I just realized I didn't answer your question about Rackets and Drapes. They're shock rock.

As for where the world's heading, I do see an eventual one world government coming to power. It seems like it'll be some sort of dictatorship. I have no idea when, but almost definately within the next 500 years. I certainly hope I'm wrong, though. But I dunno, I mean heck, they're already teaching about a "new world order" in America's schools. How about you guys in Malaysia and Europe? I know England is losing it's identity because of the UN and the 10 nation commonwealth thing.

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: dagsverre on 2001-02-07 17:50:00
I also think nations will cease to exist. However, I don't see that as a bad thing. Most conflicts today are conflicts between nations. One common world government would probably be a good thing. As long as it is really thought through and doesn't restrict our freedom in any way.

It's harder and harder to become a dictator the traditional way because of all the information flow. So I don't think that will happen. What might happen is that the large coorperations take over, think Shinra in FF7...

in the past, when guns and explosives were first invented wars stopped hapening as much cos they were too expensive. so maybe in the future a new weapon will be made which will make wars even more rare and expensive, but more powerful. maybe in the future something similar to an ff may be discovered on earth......nah.

 http://www.ci.keene.nh.us/library/intspeed.htm

T1 and T3 are American thingies, and not available in Europe, IIRC. There are other fast connections available in Europe, most of them optical, like ATM which is probably the most common high speed connection in Finland. It's available in speeds from 4 Mbps to 155 Mbps, latter being about 3 times as fast as T3.

Anyway, you have to ask your ISP for the cost (and availability) because these connections are usually built to fit your needs and hence there are no list prices for them.

To put it shortly: If you have to ask how much it costs it's too expensive for you.  :D I would recommend either ADSL or cable modem, they are much faster than modem or ISDN and reasonably priced, especially if you have to pay by the minute for your dial-up connection.

The SaiNt: I'm the wrong person to ask such questions for several reasons which I won't go into. Everyone else have fun with it.

Ged: I suggest you dump both of them.

Valentine's Day?
Well as starters, I'm am single, so I dont have a GF.
Besides, my real-life attitude makes me the very anti-social kind. I mix with many people well but don't generally get close to anyone in any kind of relationship.
Besides, I dumb college lecturer had to give me and my college mates a special 'Valentines Present' before my exam next week. I now have classes from 8am - 6pm (non-stop,no break) on Valentine's Day.
Sad case isn't it?

So 14th February is Valentine's day? Thanks, I'll try to remember that for later.

I'm serious, I didn't know. This might come as a shock to you (?), but I think Valentine's day is a strictly American tradition, and the only way we even know of the concept is through US sitcoms... (and I think some flower shops are trying to start the trend over here too because I think I saw this sign about it soon being Valentine once in my life, but I don't think they've had any success).

So what am I doing on Valentine's? The same thing as many other people I know, reading for our physics test tomorrow...

Get a girlfriend eerrr. You were saying on MSN that you want one but the girl you like wouldnt go out with you in a million years! LOL!
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: dagsverre on 2001-02-15 00:38:00
I somehow fail to see the humour in that...wouldn't sympathy be the right reaction? In general, hanging people out in public for something they said in a confidential conversation is one of the worst things you can do...

I missed the chat, so I might have gotten things wrong. On the other hand, if he wanted us to know about his love life problems he probably would have told us about it himself?

Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: Jedimark on 2001-02-15 19:13:00
I was hoping that people would agree with me and tell eerrr to get a girlfriend and then give him the courage to actauly ask this girl out! ..... never mind then!  :x

Going out at only... 13, right? What's the point? Definately a little early.
Title: How old is everyone?
Post by: dagsverre on 2001-02-15 21:10:00
OK if it was that kind of LOL then it was actually the right thing to do. Text is such a lousy format for things like this...don't get to specify what type of LOL it is.

Anyway, you are totally right of course, he should go for it...what's the worst thing that can possibly happen? Is that worst thing really that bad, considered you did your best and am no longer uncertain, and weighted up against what happens if everything turns out for the better?

Though I don't really have the right to say anything about this. I would probably need to be in your real life to make any sound judgements about this at all.

What's the point of going out with a girl at 13? Well, suppose, later in life the same situation happens again...except this time he knows what to do about the situation and have gone through it before.

On the other hand, no one should feel any pressure about having a GF at age 13 either.

oakey dokey, this is my desktop. that is a nasty colour scheme you've got there Jedimark.

.png has to be the best image file type out there, how come i hardly ever see it? i just started using it with paint shop pro 7 for my site and its compresses really well.

--EDIT-------
oopsy daisy, put the IMG address wrong.

eerrrr:

Two reasons: 1) Older browsers don't support it 2) It can't match JPEG's compression ratio if you are compressing photos or other such things.

Oh, almost forgot the pictures.   :) It's pretty big download even when downsized and compressed so I'll post only the link.

Smaller picture (downsized to 800x600):   128 KB

Full size version (1600x1200):   484 KB

EDIT: Small fixes.

My desktop:

 PNG version

 JPEG version

It's KDE2 if you're interested, running on Linux.

On a side note, how do you people stand running on those low resolutions? I feel claustrophobic just by looking on those screenshots...

Sorry I can't post my desktop right now cause I'm in college now. I just finished my Maths exam just now. Later I'm gonna have to take my English exam.

BTW, i started a new thread, (you might have noticed) but try not to post in it till Qhimm closes this one.

My monitor will do 1600x1200 just fine, but the damn GF2 is too blurry at that point. So I have to settle at 1024x768.

Here's how my desktop looks like.

Full Size
 50% Size

Neat eh?
Usually, my start taskbar is hidden, but if I didn't show it to you guys then it would look just like wallpaper. Look closely at the bottom left corner of my desktop. The transparent My Computer Icon is there.

I'll post my Win2K desktop later.

i looked at your full size desktop SaiNt and it only shows the top bit then it says its done. so should i bother using png on my site? i want my pics to look good. on psp's optimizer for gif it has the web safe colours which are crap, median cut's okay then there's the best one (cant remember what its called). should i just save as gif and make it the best colours? anyway, im making a banner at the moment and its 321K i think. its at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/loiwin/compff.gif.  can you tell me what to do with it to make it smaller? like which bits should i get rid of? should i just do my banner as a single jpg from the last frame?

You know what's funny?
I just tried to access my desktop screen capture and it loaded ok on my pc.
Maybe the server was down or your connection is bad?
Try and right click on my link and choose save target as to save it to your hard disk before viewing it.
Actually what's really funny is that I can't access your link either eerrr so I can't help you there.

***EDIT***
Hey, I made it to the 9th page!!!

To make the GIF smaller: Don't use fading!!! You could probably make it 1/2 of the size by simply having the logo splash up at once, with the gradual appearance it is currently making you use a lot of frames.

Think about how you can make the image simpler. Just because fading is more technically advanced doesn't mean that the viewers will think "this should have been faded" when viewing it. It's really more about how simple you can make it while it still working...for instance you can make the sky entirely black? That would also save a lot of space.
