Title: New version of FF7Music
Post by: ficedula on 2005-10-14 21:13:49
Topic says it all, I think. Well, maybe not all. Download it from my webpage (http://www.sylphds.net/f2k3/php/programs.php?category=ff7).

New features in this version;

remember to remove the old version of FF7Music first. If you've patched the exe that means going back to a 'clean' v1.02 install (and then applying any other patches you need - although obviously try without any other patches if you have crashing issues).

Wow! Just as I was looking at making a whole new FF7 MP3 collectiony thingy, and was starting to tackle the looping problem, this comes along! Excellent, ficedula! Thanks! Yay for FF7Music updates!

However.. first problem has already struck. I've configured everything (what I believe to be) correctly, FF7Music finds the /ficedula .INI, and all the settings and such are setup properly, so then I pop my FF7 CD into the tray, and click to 'Run FF7'. Everything wirrs into action (WM_ACTIVATEAPP and so on), but then FF7 just hangs at a black screen before the Eidos demo video, and the only way to exit is to either CTRL-ALT-DEL and close or get lucky and rightclick the icon in the taskbar (it still shows when the screen blacks out), I can alt-tab and stuff perfectly fine. This has been tried with a clean 1.02 .EXE, and different patched versions such as the high-res patch and so on.

If I try to run FF7 through the regular shortcut or FF7.EXE, with FF7Music open, the same thing still happens. Closing FF7Music and then running FF7 as normal works as it should, however (well, with no sound, because I turned MIDI off internally and stuff). Very strange!

Mobius: I had that same problem, try changing your ficelib version to the newest (1.51a?) if you have an older version, that's what fixed it for me.

Hmm. Still no-go. I think I had the most up-to-date version of ficelib, but I've updated anyway, and still having the same problem. Although it did cause a small change, in that once it's hanging on the black screen, if I force FF7Music to close, FF7 does the whole Eidos thing and continues to run normally (sans music). Weird!

Is the ficeco~1.dll file still lingering? I believe I had to delete that too, now that I think about it, if not, sorry I'm not exactly sure what fixed it in that case.

The new ff7music doesn't seem to be able to detect where the midis are, and it does not display a list of which songs there are, so you can't tell it which midi you want to play an MP3 in lieu of.

I'm working on aclean isntall of winxp, even, so theres no traces of my old ff7 install ro any otehr patches, let alone ff7music, so.. this is weird o_o

Because the new version doesn't come with a sample FF7Music.ini you're probably best using an INI from an earlier version (or from the FFSF PSF package) to get started; the INI files haven't changed at all so that's the easiest way to get the program set up. I know I said to remove all earlier versions, but keep the INI file around, it's the old EXEs/DLLs you should remove ;)

If the game runs but no music plays, that should probably sort it out. Once things are a bit better tested I'll update the ZIP on my website so it has a sample INI file included, etc.

Oh; another thing I noticed on my PC was that for some reason, OUT_WAVE worked far more reliably than OUT_DS. I don't know why, I know OUT_DS has worked absolutely fine for me in the past; but that's one thing to try if you're having issues.

wow! nice to see progress on everyones most loved patch for FF7 (well not a patch anymore, more like wrapper?)
So how do you get it to replace the midi calls? Do you monitor the calls in real time and match the midi signitures?
If that is the case, why was the exe patched in previous versions - what did the patching achieve?

Prehaps this may inspire people to thing about making other patches into wrappers instead?
Wave Out on Winamp has always been the most solid, not the quickest, but the most stable and always recommended as a fallback for people having problems in winamp

Apparently somehow i got it working by '
Hi, Thanks for your solution but here my condition for your info. Thanks

1) I removed the whole old 'FF7MUSIC' folder and re-create a new one
2) I only extract FF7music.ini and both the in out dll only from the new ff7psf package
3) I run the config and everywell l00ks fine in configuration etc.. when the game start (because i start from scratch), it run the introductory scene movie and after cloud get down from train, the music is not working.

Thank you very much :)

EDIT:

FINALLY!!! I got it working. I 're-install' the FF7Music by deleting the whole folder and install everything again. However i notice one part for my stuff. I need to use the latest  in_psf.dll in order to work. Latest version is v2.07 whereby the FF7PSF package is 2.03.

Thanks for the great tweak!

Make sure you've removed any extra DLL's from the FF7 folder (like ff7music.dll, which was in the main folder, not the \ficedula subfolder), and you're using an unpatched v1.02 EXE.

Beyond that, there's not a lot else I'm aware of that shouldn't work. However, I should point out that on my PC at least I don't use any compatibility mode fixes, so I have no idea how they would affect FF7Music, if at all.

Post by: The Skillster on 2005-10-15 11:50:22
OK bugs and requests time!
I just got it working, I noticed these things:
when it parses the search paths - the old ff7music accepted everything from a semi colon to the next semi colon as one path ie: g:\ff7\ficedula\ost\disc 1\; etc
The new one converts ALL spaces into semi colons ie:
g:\Final;fantasy;vii\ficedula\ost\disc;1; etc
However, if you change this in the config screen the ini shows "g:\final fantasy vii\ficedula\ost\disc 1";"etc
So thats something to look out for.
Also if you ADD a new file in the config screen, ie I add a psf to the battle music, it adds the absolute path ie:
instead of chu=2 13 - JENOVA.mp3
chu=G:\final fantasy vii\ficedula\ost\disc 2\2 13 - JENOVA.mp3 etc
THE SAME GOES FOR THE PLUGINS.
And yes I had to use the absolute path in my mp3 before it worked.
SO there is no use for having the search paths in there!.

REQUESTS:
PLEASE FIX the need for absolute paths (since I use ff7 from a removable drive I would like to use the relative name from inside the search paths instead of having the change the drive letter every time i move to another machine)

FIX the semi colon in the search path bug (I used my old ini with the new FF7 music and this caused it)

One last thing - I dont have to configure the input plugins do i? they should all load automatically depending on the type of file being played?

Thanks
Title: New version of FF7Music
Post by: The Skillster on 2005-10-15 12:38:27
ignore the absolute path thing. that was because i removed a space in the one of the search paths.
Note: in the ini I am set up thus:
Code: [Select]
Paths=;"G:\Final Fantasy VII\ficedula\FF7 OST\DISC 1\";"G:\Final Fantasy VII\ficedula\FF7 OST\DISC 2\";"G:\Final Fantasy VII\ficedula\FF7 OST\DISC 3\";"G:\Final Fantasy VII\ficedula\FF7 OST\DISC 4\";"G:\Final Fantasy VII\ficedula\FF7 OST\Reunion\";"G:\Final Fantasy VII\ficedula\FF7 OST\FF7A"
I realised there is a semi colon needed at the start of the parameters which the new ff7music didnt put in till I deleted the first entry above

I've done clean install and have unmodified 1.02 patch like you said and when custom mp3 would play game hangs and plugin displays "could not set cooperative level". Any ideas?
Title: Could not set cooperative level
Post by: DarK AngeL DreaD on 2005-10-15 13:27:22
I too am getting the 'cooperative level' error.

I'm running off a fresh install (since I couldn't get it on my old install). I installed to a directory without spaces, in case that was causing problems, but seemingly not.

The game loads fine, but when I get to a place where a custom psf or mp3 should load, it hangs for a while, the original MIDI starts playing, and eventually the picture shows up (while in the background, hundreds of 'Cooperative Level' errors are popping up).

I'm so very excited to get this thing to work, any help is immensely appreciated.

EDIT:  After tweaking around a bit, I've managed to stop the errors. The substitutions no longer take place, however, as can be seen in APP_LOG.txt, where it finds the MIDI and immediately starts playing it, whereas before it would note the file that it was supposed to be playing instead.

Alright! I've managed to fix all my problems!

I simply eradicated all ficedula.DLLs and such within the FF7/Ficedula directory, changed my FF7MUSIC.ini to an edited version of the one included with the FFSF (http://aaronserv.dyndns.org/hosting/ffsf/download_7.html) PSF package (simply downloaded it, and changed directory paths and any music filenames that needed to change), use input device as in_psf (d'uh) and output as out_wave, and made sure all my MP3/PSF files were in directories with no spaces (so, C:/FF7/MP3, or whatever). And now I have FF7 looping-audio bliss! And it's working with the hi-res patch and all that lovely stuff! I can mix and match MP3s and PSFs - my custom soundtrack is wonderful! Ficedula, have my babies!

This is cool.
If anyone wants to take it upon themselves to modify the FF7 PSF package thing that is available here (http://aaronserv.dyndns.org/hosting/ffsf/download_7.html) to use this new version of FF7Music, whatever the latest version of HE is, and update the directions, then go right ahead...  Let me know and I'll post it up there.  (You will be credited, of course.)  :-P  I don't really have time to look at it for a while.

I only just re-installed Final Fantasy VII for my PC yesterday after having not played it for many many years... had a look online for patches to make it work in XP and I found all of this wonderful stuff!

But all this stuff to do with plugins is rather confusing to me, and the FF7Music programme doesn't come with them.  It's useful for people familiar with the old versions, but to a total newbie its frustrating as it seems that the programme doesn't have all the required elements that it needs to run.

I've tried using the plugin dlls that come in the FFSF PSF package, and the FF7Music.ini, I've tried altering the paths, all sorts of things...  but when I run the programme, I still hear the original PC midi files instead of the PSF files that I got.  I'm using an FFVII install that has the 1.02 patch (and the flip videos patch, thuogh I'm not sure I actually needed it as I discovered it was my matrsoksa stuff that was stopping the videos from working).

So, should I keep messing around with the files, or shall I just wait a few days and hope that someone releases a super-easy thing that will just install everything that I need?  I really can't stand the PC's midi files and am looking forward to playing with a mix of the playstation music and the orchestral tracks.  (At the moment I'm just trying to get the playstation ones to work though.)

I get a weird error which causes FF7MUSIC.exe to run veeeery slow... (and mostly crash at all after that...)

It says that it couldn't enumerate any tvtuners (i haven't got one), then it tries to connect to NVGPIO (NVtunep) or something like that... and then it says it's using Display 1... and that's it... These three messages are repeatet until it crashes... and i don't know what to do -._-.

This is really cool.

Trying to use my old ini caused FF7 to hang as described but switching to the one from the package worked. I also had the thing with the direct sound plug in not working but the wave being fine.

The interface improvements are neat. When browsing music files and plugins the rembered folder is shared, would be nice if they were seperate.

I'm probably being dumb and/or blind but how do I set multiple input plug-ins for the diferent formats?

Edit:For other brainiacs like me I think multi plug-ins works by looking for other plugins in the same directory as the specified input plug in.

Anyway thanks for making a program that made me want to play FF7 again!

Hey, found a few bugs.

For some reason, trying to override "cinco" (the song played when riding a chocobo on the world map) causes a recursive loop error of some kind, and error messages will continue to pop up.   Unfortunatly, ff7music seems unable/aunwilling to produce a error log, so i need to like, re-install photoshop and make a print screen of the errors =/

[edit] nevermind, i just didnt have a song set to play it... though this doesn't seemt o be a problem for other ones... o_O

Also, the game will stop responding if the "emulate ramps" box is checked and such an event occures (Usually before fighting a Jenova, i've found, haha), so, that either needs to be fixed, or kept un-checked.

It also didn't do squat to turn off midis.  It made them very, very quite, but still audible.

Short of that, using a plethora of AC tracks and ff7 remixes is very, very awesome =)

Aha!  I managed to get it to work.  Had to disable my windows midi volume though cause the programme wouldn't do it.

Erm, perhaps this is a dumb question, but where do I get the plugin for playing MP3s?  I only have the in_psf.dll for playing the playstation music.  Do I need to download and install winamp and use a plugin from that?

I didn't have it either.  I downloaded winamp 2.95 and took it from there.  It also helped me choose which files to put where anyway.

Also the ramps option did give me some trouble as well.

Without it it works great.  Thanks for the great update.  Fixed all the issues I was having with it!

Small update on my website (v1.5a) with a couple of fixes;

-Fixed looping (didn't read setting from INI correctly)
-Adding files doesn't put the path in the main list, but (correctly) in the search paths
-Fixed potential crash in custom looping code
-Log saved to disk on exit

Errors:

"cooperative level error" is a DirectSound error. Try reconfiguring the DS output plugin with different options, or use OUT_WAVE instead, which is what I do.

Problems with ramps - if somebody could email me a savegame as close as possible to the event which triggers it that would be helpful. Since the new version (should) save its log to disk on exit (provided you don't kill it from Task Manager) any logs would be helpful too.

Ficelib versions - should be completely irrelevant now since v1.5 doesn't require or use FICEDULA.DLL - you don't need any version present.

BUG in NEW version:

Theres a serious, SERIOUS delay in the music being launched in 1.51.  Like, at LEAST 5 seconds, and sometimes a track won't stop properly.  I've had to revert to 1.5 and just not have the "emulate ramps" option.

Also, is the main program window SUPPOSED to start out like, 14 pixels too small in both directions?  Because it opens up, and there's small scroll bars on the bottom and side, and stretching the border out just a little gets rid of them.  This doesn't affect functionality, btw, but it seems like something worth cleaning up once you've squished the other bugs.

wow all of this popped up in just over a day?
I was too busy playing with the first version!
Ramping did cause random crashes after battle.
I got a weird error at one point, FF7 crashed on me! (normally it doesnt crash, it just dies).
When you board the boat at Junon, and you see the boat on the world map, it then zooms in on the boat and is supposed to switch to a view inside the boat instead with FF7music running it crashes. XP tells me the crash was in winMM.dll

I got around it buy not using ff7music.
I will test the new version tonight, I will look forward to editing the psf package aaron, might not be till later this week though as I need to kill Jenova first!!

Running 1.5a

I also found with ramps checked after looking into rooms at the honey bee it hung but I overwrote the save. I tested it out with battles as some one mentioned that and had the same problem when leaving the battle result screen. I stoped playing with ramping on after that.

Resuming doesn't seem to work for me when Looping is on, uncheck looping and it works fine.

Other than that had no crashes but I've only clocked about three hours of play since installing the latest version.

I just download the version 1.5.1

For me, it rocks big time why? firstly

1) The music are finally sync together with the game. Overall the synchronisation is in a much improvement (example: when it come to a fight, the music is on together with the screen turning 360 degre instead of after the screen turn 360 degree then the music will be switch on. )

2) The looping for the MP3 rocks!. No hang/crash/abornal symptom

3) I can play FF7 AC MUSIC!!!  :wicked:

Thanks for producing such a software.

You ROCKS!  8)

I think for now the best thing to do is take the ini from the package of the old version of FF7Music and PSFs. You will still need to set tracks and plugin directories.

I found something strange today while using FF7music
I ran it and clicked on run ff7.
I quit FF7 and left FF7music running (i forget to close it far too often and end up running 2 of them, which leads to overlapping music).
I then went and ran FF7w (FF7 in a window application) and now normally I have midi disabled to use FF7 music so there is no music in FF7w, but because FF7music was still opened it was STILL catching the midi calls and hence STILL playing the MP3s even though FF7 wasnt started by it.
Just a thought maybe people didnt know they could use FF7music without actually having it running FF7, (since people like me use FF7w and sometimes rename the exe because I use many different versions)

The new version doesn't support directories with spaces in when linking to files.

I had my files in c:\program files\ff7\mp3 and the program files parsed as

c:\program;
files\ff7\mp3

Use a directory with no spaces in if you are having problems getting any music at all.

Just to let you know - the new version of FF7music rocks, particularly the looping mp3s (no longer do i have to make mp3s that are half an hour long!) however just a few bugs that seem to have popped up.

Firstly there was a point in the game (I cant remember where exactly, but it was aroudn the time you go to Rocket Town) when after finishing a battle, the battle music didnt stop, and instead played along side the victory music.

Also (and a somewhat more significant error), after quiting FF7, with FF7music running, the process of FF7.exe (using WinXP) is still running, and for some reason this stops me from being able to open any program that plays music/videos. This is something that only seems to happen whilst running the latest version of FF7music.

But despite the couple of bugs, FF7music is great - keep up the good work! :)

Try having the first line in the paths box blank and then re enter your paths after the 1st line

I noticed one bug which has happened about 3 times.
When you go to an inn and sleep and the screen goes blank when the sleep music plays it keeps looping and you are stuck on the blank screen.

Setting FF7music to "High Priority" seems to fix most of my delay problems.

It does not, unfortunately, fix the problem of midi volume being completely unaffected regardless of what options I check. So instead of playing my midis I'm forced to use MP3s of the OST in their place. (The midis actually sound better than the OST with high-quality soundfonts...)

Seriously?  Any suggestions as to where to get those high quality soundfonts?

Has anyone else had a bug where the motorcycle chase music doesn't stop, or after it stops you just get silence?  In the bit after the bike chase and battle you have the characters standing around on the road, then jumping down to the ground and talking before setting off on the world map - when I do that bit of the game I just get silence when using FF7music.  When you step out onto the world map, suddenly I hear one second of the battle fanfare, then one second of the music you hear on the world, and then the world map music.  Very strange.

Also, I replaced the bombing mission track and then when I started a new game I didn't hear any music after the intro movie, when Cloud and everyone jumps off the train.  Just sound effects.  Music worked fine everywhere else.  Any suggestions?

SGM Soundfont (http://www.geocities.jp/shansoundfont/)

Runs at 150MBs, you'll need some good free RAM (and maybe a registry tweak) to run it smoothly.

There's also the Synergi Soundfont (http://www.samplebanks.com/), but you have to purchase it. It's very good, particularly for its size (running at about 50MBs); I still prefer the SGM soundfont for certain instruments, however. (That, and I have 2GBs of RAM, 1GB of which hardly ever goes used...)

My MIDI music playback is done by a Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth ... would Soundblaster soundfonts work on that?  Or do you actually have to have a Sounblaster device?

Thanks though -  have 1gb of RAM so it should work fine. :D

You need a Soundblaster card. At LEAST a Sound Blaster Live!, hopefully an Audigy or better (Live! cards have issues with large soundfonts). I'm sure there are other cards out there that run soundfonts, but I'm not aware of them.

Well, the first time you hear the bombing theme, I THINK it's actually part of the "opening theme", and then it repeats with the bombing theme, so the game is trying to access "Oa.mid", but you prolly dont have a replacement for it. *shrug*

As for the topic, does anyone know if this sYnerGi SoundFont is worth getting? Well I am getting it right now, and hopefully I will get it working in the SB Audigy 2 ZS but does anyone have by any chance another example of what it sounds like other than the motorcycle music? Thanks!

RTFT!

You can play ANY music you want; but you need to provide the music yourself.  So yes, you need to go "aquire" it.

Or you could just use your britney spears music insread =P

Do I have to do anything special to get this running PSFs? I'm sure I've reworked the .ini correctly for my filenames, but it's just giving me odd errors. I've seletected Winamp's PSF plugin and checked it's configured right, but no go...

I can't think what I'm doing wrong (this is quite a simple program!), but does anyone have any ideas for getting PSFs working? I don't have the errors with me (no internet at home right now), but I'm just posting this anyway since there's a slight chance someone will have my miracle cure :P

Thanks~

your running the new version I assume?
Check the ff7music.ini and make sure the psf_in.dll/in_psf.dll enteries are in there and that it has its settings set in the INI file.
The most that should happen is the music doesnt play or midis start playing? If your FF7/FF7music is crashing thats gotta be another issue

Easiest way is to manually edit the FF7music.ini
in there you will find entries for each midi track in FF7:
for example;
[bat.mid]="MP3\battle.mp3"
I will post a sample from my own INI in a few hours time.

Title: New version of FF7Music
Post by: EmperorSteele on 2005-11-29 19:56:32
No.

Does Winamp or any other MP3 player do that?

I assume you're trying to circumvent those first few seconds of silence that happens when track loops, as well as properly looping the song from where it ended.  Sad to say, but, even winamp and windows media player can't loop mp3s as adaquitly as the midis get looped in-game.  Sorry =/

I just meant that for example i have the fighting.mp3 instead of the bat-midi
and its justabout 3 minutes and after that it starts from the beginning and thats noti without music patch, the midi starts some seconds later and this sound much better.

Is there really no way todo this?

PS: Sorry formy bad english...
Title: New version of FF7Music
Post by: The Skillster on 2005-11-30 16:29:06
yo, here is a easy way
open your mp3 with any mp3 editing program (I use wave editor that came with my soundblaster software), copy and paste the track so it is there twice (one after the other), now delete the sections inbetween that you dont want untill you are happy with the result, now save it and voila!
I doubt you need to loop it more than once since one OST mp3 is about 3-4 minutes long, I cant see a standard FF7 fight being longer than 180 seconds...

The only things I can think of that might help is to make sure the prog points to the ff7 psf files correctly same gose with the winamp plugin and it being set up right also if you are using the  new one ( and used the older ver beforehand) make sure you turn off the olf ver of it because it may be interfering with the new ver

well it you still use the old ver (with the centra (sp) prog) thyen open that up and pick restore back up and it will reset it.

Then open the new ver (it is a stand alone ff7 music prog) and select config (middle button) one the first screen it will be the setup for the plugins make sure it points to the psf plugin correctly (if you have winamp put a copy of it in the winamp plugin dir and pick it from there (IE:C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\in_psf.dll) and make sure the output dir is corect (if you have winamp use the out wave plugin IE:C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\out_wave.dll)

The next window is for the psfs. the top part is what psf file replaces what song. Wile the bottom is where the psf files are located so make sure it is pointed correctly (IE:D:\Games\Final Fantasy VII\Ficedula\FF7Mp3\PSF"

the next set of options are the playback options. I am not sure what needs to be done here so just play around however you want to)

It should work now

Title: Highwind Theme GONE?
Post by: Tokuwa on 2005-12-08 21:03:45
As the title subtly points out, I have a weird problem with FF7music.
For most of the time, FF7music worked great on me. But once i got to the point where you recieve the Highwind for the first time, something was really fishy and.. well.. really missing.
The Highwind theme just wouldn't play. So of course I entered FF7music config and checked to see what I did wrong.
So scrolled.. and scrolled.. and after a dozen up and downs I came to notice there was no Highwind theme to associate O_O
The log said something about a "hiku" file, but I just couldn't select it and associate anything inside the FF7music GUI.

So I opened the ini and indeed there's simply no ID-line for "hiku",
it goes straight from =hen to =mogu

How can I get or produce the ID? That it got the Highwind theme is really one of the worst things happening and made me force to switch to soundfont midi x_X

Title: New version of FF7Music
Post by: Tokuwa on 2005-12-10 09:11:11
Yay, for some reason it was enough to add a "hiku=(filename)" line into the preset definition - hiku still doesn't have an ID, but the song plays XD
So I guess the IDs are just there to make them selectable in FF7music, right?

Well, all's fine now ^_^ Say.. just a theoretical question, but is it actually possible to make a gapless looping option, using some kind of buffer or whatever to loop without pause? PSFs don't work for me, so I'm still using the OST - but if there was such a loop option, I just may edit out the fade-outs and make them loopable.
Title: New version of FF7Music
Post by: EmperorSteele on 2005-12-10 12:54:16
Looping seems to have taken long enough to impliment, and may in fact be a problem with the winamp plugin.  I notice that even winamp waits a second o two before starting a new song/looping an old one.

Just my 2 cents, i may be wrong though.

Downloaded updated versions of out_ds.dll, out_wave.dll, in_psf.dll, and FF7music.exe. Using my 1.0 version of FF7.exe, seems to work fine, musics great.
Using out_ds.dll makes the "cooperation" error, so i use out_wave.dll.

If anything comes up, ill let you know.

Could be the sound control applet that likes to run at startup for most of these cheesy AC97 cards.

Try the following:
Go to Start and then click on RUN
Type in MSCONFIG and press enter.
Be extremely careful in here as you can reck your system so dont touch if you are not sure what you are doing.

Go to the startup tab and disable anything you think is associated with the soundcard, click OK and reboot.
Works for Win98/Me/XP
Not 2000 or 95

Can't get this to work. I'm sure my directories are set up properly. When I get into the game, I have SFX but my midi's play (Well, there's no music, cause my Midi volume is set to 0)

According to my ff7music.txt:

Entering MAIN
Exiting MAIN
Field Start
MIDI play: 6
reading midi file: MAKORO.mid
MAKORO.mid
Midi file matched! MAKORO
CSA6
CSR7
File counterpart 03 - Makou Reactor.mp3
Resolved to F:\FF7OST\03 - Makou Reactor.mp3
Playing music
CSA6
CSR7
CSA8
Look for plugin for mp3
Init plugins
CSR9
current volume: 127
MIDI is playing SUCCESSFULLY!!!

Forgive my lack of knowing what's going on.

OMFG THANK U SOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!  Ur tutorial is awesome!!
