With so much talk about the remake lately, I wanna discuss the new port of the original game to PS4. This port seems surprisingly competent.

Pros:
  • Runs at native 1080p with anti-aliasing.
  • A fast-forward button to run the game at 3x speed.
  • Upscaled font.
  • The framelimiter works correctly (unlike the PC version).
  • They have centered field screens to have smaller black bars at top and bottom, instead of one big one at bottom.
  • All the high quality FMVs and other improvements made to the Steam version have carried over.
  • Trophy support.
  • Uses PlayStation button labels instead of [Switch], [Cancel], etc.
  • Analog support by default. Movement is still confined to 8 directions, but you can use either the stick or the D-Pad, and the stick auto runs if you push it all the way, or walks if you push it partway.
  • Cheat button to refill HP/MP/Limit during battles.
  • Cheat button to disable random encounters.

Cons:
  • No widescreen support. Not even a half-assed "stretch" mode like you can get with Aali's driver, let alone a proper wider viewport.
  • Will probably never be moddable.
  • The line widths in the upscaled font are inconsistent.
  • They have changed the save format, so it's unclear if BC will ever work with this.
  • Battle scenes still run entirely at 15fps like PC (instead of 15fps for the 3D viewport and 60 for the menu like on PS1).
  • It's ~4GB even though it doesn't need to be that big (Steam version is ~1.5GB).
  • Battle scenes are not properly centered, and still have one big black bar at the bottom instead of smaller ones on bottom and top.
  • They have not added any new spelling or grammar fixes, so Cloud still tells you to "Attack when it's tail is up!"
  • Button mapping can't be changed.

It's not a perfect port, by any means, but it's clear they have put far more effort into it than Square Enix usually puts into their ports. I would go as far as to say this is the best version of this game currently available without mods.

Now that Bootleg is officially discontinued and users are advised to use 7thHeaven instead, I have moved the bootleg subforum under archive. You can still read stuff there, but no new posts. For more information, read Vgr's post explaining Bootleg's discontinuation.

General Discussion / Final Fantasy VII: Machinabridged
« on: 2015-09-03 19:52:26 »
TeamFourStar, the guys behind DragonBall Z Abridged, have just created a new show focused on FF7, made using a combination of in-game footage, voice acting, and heavy video editing. It's called Final Fantasy VII: Machinabridged, and the first episode can be found here:

Thoughts? Seems like a decent start, but definite room for improvement.

edit: I'm gonna keep a list here, for easy watching.

Season 1

See thread title. The forum was created on August 12, 2000. I might be a bit late on this in most time zones, but it's been fifteen years! Celebration time!

This guy made the whole game. Really impressive stuff, it is.

Why are they doing this. They don't have a good history with online services (FF7's launcher really stands out here).

Fans of his will love this. Those of you who aren't fans will no doubt be impressed. Yes, he uses autotune, but it's still impressive work.

Also, I looped it in case anyone wants to stick it in their game. If you do, please consider buying a copy of his arrangement on Bandcamp or iTunes. I'm not tryin' ta take sales from him by uploading it here (in fact, I bought it myself for a few bucks to get the FLAC, as those are infinitely better for looping than MP3s ripped from YouTube).

Completely Unrelated / The Sims 2 for free!

Personally, I also really like the Realistic Ages 1 Month mod, which slows down in-game aging so that one Sim day is equivalent to about a month in real life (total lifespan, around 780-1140 days). This obviously isn't for everyone; heck, there's probably gonna be people who think time moves too fast by default, but I thought it was worth linking to anyway. It seems the most balanced of all the lifespan mods I could find.

edit: this mod looks pretty cool too.

Tools / READ THIS before creating a new Tools thread
« on: 2014-07-17 19:23:39 »
I've just spent a little over an hour cleaning up the Tools section of the forum. It was quite a mess. If people make sure to follow these guidelines when making new threads in this section, it should make tools easier to find and generally improve things for everyone.

What belongs in Tools?
Please only create a new thread in this section if you have a tool ready to release. If you're still doing research into formats or something similar, consider posting in Scripting and Reverse Engineering instead. If you have a question or request, post it in General Discussion.

Tools Subforums
There are subforums for FF7, FF8, and FF9 tools. Put your tools thread in the appropriate subforum for the game it supports. If it supports a different game, or more than one game, put it into Misc. Tools

Thread naming
I renamed every thread in this section to be consistent. Hopefully this will make it more obvious what a tool does, and make things easier to find. If you make a new Tools thread, try to format your thread title like this:

[GAME VERSION] Tool Description - Tool Name (Version)

  • GAME VERSION - What version of the game does your tool support?. Good things to put here include [PC], [Steam], [PSX/PC], [PC98]. If you're posting in the Misc. Tools section, make sure to specify the game as well, such as [FFX], [FF7/FF8][PSX] as well. If your tool is game-agnostic, such as HextLaunch, put [N/A].
  • Tool Description - What does your tool do? We don't need a full feature list, but try to put enough that we can get the gist of it. "Field Editor", "Model Importer" are good examples. If your tool's name makes it obvious what it does, such as "FF7 Trainer" or "Model Exporter", you can omit the description. If you name your tool "Rainbow Chocobo" or "Ochu" or something else that doesn't make its functionality clear, you must include a description here.
  • Tool Name - This should be self-evident. If your tool doesn't have a name, you can use the description alone.
  • Version - Format this however you want. You can put Alpha, 3.4b, WIP, v7... it doesn't really matter. If your tool doesn't have a version number, I recommend putting a date here instead. If you choose to put a date, PLEASE USE ISO DATE FORMAT (YYYY-MM-DD). We've got people from all over the world on these forums, and the date format that makes sense to you may confuse someone else. Of course, if you use actual version numbers, this won't be an issue. Also, "Final" is not a version number; I've seen "final" projects continue to receive updates before, and you risk embarrassing yourself if you call a project final and then need to update it later. Just use a date.
Good thread name examples:
[PC] Battle trainer - Corneo (v0.7b)
[PSX/PC] Texture Replacer - Selphie (2014-07-17)
[FF4SNES] SaveEdit (beta 1)

Bad thread name examples (DON'T DO THIS):
Spell Editor for FF7 (while it's clear, it doesn't even attempt to follow the format, and makes it harder to scan through a list of threads. Without a version, people can't see easily whether it's been updated)
[REL][FF6] Battle editor - Gray Chocobo (1.8.5) ([REL] isn't helpful, since only releases are allowed in Tools anyway)
Model Replacer - Hind D (WIP 2) (What game is this for? Is it FF7 or FF8? If I saw this, I might even guess Metal Gear based on this name.)
[PC] Editor - Huge Materia (0.7a) (The description needs to be descriptive. This is an editor, but what does it edit? Dialogue? Models? AI?)
[FF7] File extractor (5/8/14) (It needs to say whether it supports [PC] or [PSX] or both. Also, the date is formatted wrong; it's unclear if this is August 5 or May 8 due to regional differences.)
[PC] Texture Replacer - Lucrecia (Final Version) (Seriously, do not user "Final Version" as a version number. Ever. You may find it turns out not to be the final version later on.)

What if I see a misnamed or misplaced thread?
Report it or send me a PM. Do not post in the thread itself; this is unproductive.

If everyone follows these instructions, I think it's safe to say existing tools will be much easier to find, and confusion will be minimized. Thanks for cooperating!

Completely Unrelated / Free RenderMan

So RenderMan is going to be free for non-commercial use, very soon. Is this something that might be helpful to TA or to other art-related projects?

E3 2014 is just around the bend, and it looks like this year is gonna be a big one. Y'all got any hopes or predictions? What do you think will be announced?

My predictions:

  • SEGA announces Sonic & All-Stars Racing 3, featuring even more product placement characters and even fewer SEGA characters. Segata Sanshiro still notably absent.
  • Grand Theft Auto V finally announced for PC, scheduled for a holiday 2016 release (until it gets delayed).
  • The Wii Vitality Sensor makes a return, this time for the Wii U. Once again, Nintendo will go completely silent about it for an extended period of time and then cancel it.
  • First footage shown of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. It's just battle footage and it looks identical to a battle between the same gen-3 Pokémon in X and Y.
  • Sony announces PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Melee. It's still not as good as that one other party fighting franchise.
  • In an attempt to get in on the party fighting action, Microsoft announces a partnership with Bandai Namco for their own exclusive entry into the genre, Digimon Rumble Arena 3, featuring a wide selection of Digimon, in addition to fan-favorite crossover characters such as Master Chief and Marcus Fenix.
  • Konami reveals that they never had any plans to do anything with Hudson's IPs, and the only reason for the purchase is because they needed to get rid of some money quick.
  • Square-Enix shows trailers for Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, both behind closed doors, but it's okay because they're just footage that we've already seen edited to show in a different order, with some narration.
  • Square-Enix announces a from-the-ground-up remake of Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for PS4 and Xb1, with all new 3D graphics, voice acting, etc. for the sole purpose of trolling Final Fantasy VII fans.
  • Nintendo: "Retro Studios is working on a project, and we aren't ready to reveal it yet."
  • Another 10 minute long trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, carefully designed to show as many returning voice actors from the franchise as they can, further emphasizing as passive-aggressively as possible that David Hayter isn't in the game.
  • Resident Evil 7 is revealed, heralded as a "return to form for the franchise", with a trailer showing stunning footage of cutscenes and QTEs.
  • Destiny is completely absent, confusing absolutely everyone.
  • 3D Realms attempts to announce a new Duke Nukem game. Hilarity ensues.
