Completely Unrelated / What Makes Final Fantasy Great?
« on: 2008-03-15 00:05:22 »
Don't know how many people are still wandering around these forums, but if you stop by please, give some insight.

This was inspired for a couple of reasons: One because I read the "games like final fantasy" topic and found so few good games like Final Fantasy [insert # here], and two because I'm toying with Java3D and a game like FFVII with so few 3d environments would be an easy(ish) opening project.

Anyway my question is: what makes FF (specifically FFVII) so great? (Yes, I have some ideas, but I'd like opinions) Is it the storyline? The fighting-system? The world? The characters? Certainly not the graphics... (though at the time the FMV's were outstanding)

Why are so many of us pulling it back out (or continuing to keep it out) after a decade?

General Discussion / Weak Barret?
« on: 2008-03-12 22:51:57 »
I don't know what to make of this...

Barret: Lv 52
Strength: 73
Vitality: 79
Magic: 65
Spirit: 66
Dexterity: 41
Luck: 23

Weapon: Missing Score (Final)

Average Normal Attack Damage: 90... on weak enemies

??? What's up with that? He used to do normal damage, about 2000-3000! Red XIII, with about the same stats (more dexterity) does 3500 damage on average, Cloud of course hits about 4500-5500. I tried looking with Jenova to see if the savegame was corrupt or something but everything seems fine. What could be causing him to be so weak?

Edit: It's Missing Score. Something's up with it. Another gun jumps his attack back to 1500... what's up with my final weapon?!
Edit2: Vincent's final weapon is the same way... between the two of them they're normal attack does between 600-700 damage... maybe its the enemies I'm fighting? Seems a final weapon should be doing quite a bit more than that. Maybe these enemies are strong against guns... I'll try somewhere else.

Troubleshooting / hyper jump crash
« on: 2008-03-09 21:12:07 »
i searched and found an earlier yet, sadly, unhelpful post about the game crashing during cid's hyper jump limit break. in the earlier post it was fighting Proud Clod (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=4250.0;prev_next=prev) but with me it's happened on both Carry Armor and just now Diamond Weapon, both of which are completely frustrating to have to fight again. Carry Armor I must've killed five or six times, and Diamond Weapon I don't want to have to fight that many times! does this make any sense? is there a suggestion to avoid?

i think disabling the saints hi res patch will stop the errors, but its more fun when the models are all pretty  :-P

Troubleshooting / Black Screen W/ Sound, Then Crashes
« on: 2008-03-04 17:38:39 »
I recently wanted to pull FFVII back out, because, and I think we all agree, it's the greatest game ever made.

However I'm having lots of problems and I'm more than a bit frustrated.

Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 4600+ (2.4GHz)
3GB DDR2 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS Video Card
MS Windows XP Home Edition SP2

Symptoms:
The game starts, but only plays the sound of the Eigos Logo intro video. I can play the video fine off the CD, but I get nothing in game. Then (I suppose) the game crashes, because the sound of the intro cuts off a bit early, then nothing happens. I know it goes to the New Game or Load Game screen, but pressing up and down (Num8 and Num2) does nothing, nor does Ctrl+Q. Ctrl+Esc shows me my mouse on top of the black screen as well as resize mice when (I guess) I hover over the edges of the FFVII window, but I can't quit the program or anything. I've tried Alt+F4, Ctr+Alt+Del, and the Windows Start button, none of which can exit the program or show me anything other than a black screen. I have to restart my computer every time (which in itself is quite frustrating).

What I've Tried:
I've installed 1.02 patch, tried every video option (Riva and TNT, Software Renderer and Direct3D, 320 x 240 Full, 640 x 480 Quarter, and 640 x 480 Full) all of which produce the same thing--black screen, sound only.
I've edited the registry so every movie will run off my hard drive. No result.
I've run RivaTuner and turned off 8-bit palletized textures. No result.
Most recently I tried installing The saiNt's high res patch, but it says "wrong filesize or already patched! nothing patched!" even though I'm using the 1.02 executables right from the download. Obviously, no result.

What else could it be? Now it's not even so much that I can't play the game but that I can't make my computer work with it. How frustrating!

Thanks,
Mav
