Title: [FF7PC] Enhanced Movies (2011-03-13)
Post by: Trojak on 2011-03-10 18:35:39
Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?5oxns4oj1mgny

I know that there already is project like this but I do this for testing my enlargement technique and for my own use. So I just want to post some screens from my work and if anybody here want to use these movies I can upload them.

Original movies had 320x224 res. For enhanced I just doubled the resolution. The size is almost same like originial even with doubled resolution. For video I use xvid 2pass encoding and for audio microsoft adpcm.

For better comparsion I also resized the original footage with classic bicubic sharp method to match new movie size 640x448. Images are taken directly from movies. Here are some samples:

Impressive, does this work on regular images as well?

HOLY CRAP. How did you make them so sharp?
Title: Re: FF7 Enhanced Movies
Post by: DLPB_ on 2011-03-10 22:03:03
Sharp maybe but tons of artifacts and not as good as mine or the other guys...

Post by: sl1982 on 2011-03-10 22:17:22
They seem to lose some detail but they almost have a cel shaded look to them. I am curious to see what they would look like at 4x the originals.

Are you using the FFVII PC videos as source? Probably not a good idea.
Title: Re: FF7 Enhanced Movies
Post by: Trojak on 2011-03-11 07:52:19
Every resizing method have some disadvantages. Perfect method doesn't exist. My goal was to remove most of artifacts from compression and apply alnitalias like filter (more like median) image to remove jaggy edges that was caused by resize but without blurring image. It's not perfect method and it works best with painted or cartoon stuff because it makes image looks little plastic. Don't forget that these images are taken directly from compressed movies so artefacts you speak about maybe caused by xvid compression apllied on them. :P

You did that using the PC fmvs? If so, that's quite an impressive result.

i like them, they almost look like watercolor paintings. What was your source material?

These are my favourite so far, I like the effect of the enhancement. Seems more cartoon-like. You should post one on YouTube so we can see it in action!

Here 2 movies as a preview
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=47VYSE10 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=47VYSE10)

I'm not satisfied with all movies. Some of them looks quite good and some may not. As I said before if anybody want them I can upload all of them.

Wow, I love your movies ! I wouldn't be against a download link at all ^^

I like them. The original Highwind one was very dark. I like yours; using both of them. TBH, I however don't think I'd want them all like that. They almost have a more cartoonish (Animeish?) look to them. For example I wouldn't want the Aerith death scene like that. If you post them all though, I'll download it.  8-)

Could you perhaps give us some insight into what programs you are using to upconvert and enhance these videos? I would like to experiment with the field backgrounds to see if it is better then what I am using right now.
Title: Re: FF7 Enhanced Movies
Post by: BloodShot on 2011-03-12 19:40:35
I am liking where this is going. It may look more cartoonish, but maybe it could be toned down somehow to prevent that, even though it might reduce quality?

I would be interesting to see what it does for field backgrounds.

For anyone who want these movies here are the links:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=44FQNDWF (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=44FQNDWF) Movies part 1 (59 files)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TP5LC4F0 (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TP5LC4F0) Movies part 2 (38 files)

Files not included: fcar.avi(since it looks same as car_1209), eidoslgogo.avi, explode.avi, fship2.avi, last4_2.avi, last4_3.avi and white2.avi.

Programs used photoshop and virtualdub.

2 BloodShot: I think not because it will make jagged edges  Only if the enhanced image will be used as blend layer with decreased opacity.

Simply incredible.  The edges are sharp as hell.  I noticed that texture detail is lost though.  The edge threshold seems a little high but with such low quality videos perhaps that's the right decision.  It certainly looks better to me.

I really like the look on these :)
I woulda never found them but I cant get the recent full set of FMVs out on the forum to work. Interestingly, these do-and they look really wonderful compared to what im used to. thanks!

-actually, on further review the opening works and some of the other videos do not ;p doing further testing for lack of something better to do.

I'm having problems with the enhanced movies, looks like the speed of the movies are 1/2 in game but it plays awesome in video players.
Anyone have this issue too?I'm not sure what are causing this, filters for the enhancement or doubled resolution.  :(
Title: Re: FF7 Enhanced Movies
Post by: DLPB_ on 2011-08-08 22:26:21
If it plays fine in the player then the reason is the game itself or aalis driver and compatibility.  There is nothing you can do.

Post by: Immortal Damyn on 2011-08-08 22:27:01
DarkFang is correct, this seems to be an issue between your ISP and Megaupload, or something else isnt permitting you to use MU.

Evidence:Here :) (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/Neo_carnage/Final%20Fantasy%207%20modding/FFVIIEM.png?t=1312842338)

Well DLPB,actually i find what i can do,i can loss some quality but looks better than original movies (without so much interlaced lines).
Convert Trojak enhanced movies to 320x240 or 320x224 to preserve original movies resolution (doubled resolution is the problem)and copy the audio and video attributes.

Megaupload probably gets blocked because it's decent downloads speeds are popular amongst pirates.

@Asuka_XL: Now i recognize your problem.

Because you are not alone and these are not the only files uploaded

Fine, I'll upload it in a bit. You have to download all of the files I will send you, and launch the executable. Then you will get the 2 files that were hosted on MU.

Hi Asuka_XL,

the movies are only divided into two parts.
If you would decompress the two ZIP archives,
you could move the files in one movie folder.

Here you go : http://www.mediafire.com/?5oxns4oj1mgny

@Asuka_XL: I hope you understand, that "magochocobo file~ part 1, part 1.5, part 2, part 3" thing.

These parts are not different versions of one mod.
The content of these parts updates different sections of the game.

Are these movies better than the PSX ones DLPB uploaded?
Title: Re: FF7 Enhanced Movies
Post by: DLPB_ on 2011-09-11 01:51:52
It depends what you want from the videos.  See mine are made to be high quality whilst removing virtually none of the actual detail or footage.  The problem with that is, the video quality has a lot of noise.

The problem with people who "clean" them, like this guy has with these is that although they look nice and smooth with hardly any noise, they also give an unnatural look.   The eye sees it very well indeed.

That is why I prefer mine over anyone elses, but it is a personal preference.  I would rather put up with noise than get something which makes, imho, the graphics look like plastic.

http://www.eastway.sk/_temp/ff7/ff7_2.jpg

Notice how the detail has been lost.  It looks too "fake" to me.  You cannot put information where it wasn't with filters.

Well I've already downloaded the PSX versions, I don't think I'll bother with these ones right now
