Thankfully _Ombra_ has been so gentle to offer to compress my files using his proprietary compressing tool so that I should no longer need to use a hex editor as I take a big shortcut here.

552
I get your point, The Skillster but Q-Gears is a long term project which might not be offering anything of the sort before 2009 and sincerely, I might even be dead before that date comes. I was thinking of something to start now. A project that would be totally independant from The_SaiNt's patch.

I believe we have together the resources to make it possible since The_SaiNt had already started his experiments with bilinear filtering...

Hello!

After reading this http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=6005.msg80769#msg80769,
I just wonder: is filtering the background just a lot of work but technically very possible or is it something that we are not even sure yet that can be accomplished ? In the first case, then why not try and build up common resources in order to help The SaiNt in this ? I read that Borde had already tried before an approach with some encouraging results...

A filtered background is the last step (in my opinion) to ultimate enhancements in the game as we have already all we need save that. Q-Gear is still at its earliest stage and it will support (at least initially) only the PSX version of the game so I just think a common attempt at tackling this 2D backgrounds might be taken...

I am no programmer but if I can be of help with anything that doesn't require specific knowledge, I am of course available!

Thanks for your attention!

Thanks Borde and Stormmedia for your dedication!! Keep it up, guys!

555
My point of view is already expressed.

What Jari wrote makes no sense to me because if it's true that the Wiki might later on become what miracle.flame's guide is now, it is also true, like Stormmedia rightly said, that his topic is next to be closed while the Wiki is still (I hope a very much) work-in-progress.

Also, if closing stormmedia's and miracle.flame's topics is a mean to coherce their collaboration in making the Wiki page the reference (again an illuminating post of Jari) then I must say that it's really sad to see how much faith in their spontaneous help the Wiki people expected to receive. But I am just hoping that this was Jari's interpretation...

Not to mention that if we didn't start "whine****ing" about this, probably The SaiNt would not have gotten in touch with miracle.flame to work out a solution (and The SaiNt himself was interested in reading this feedback)...

This is also my last post about this whole thing, wishing the best for the Wiki customized patches' page as I believe it's a very good starting idea!

556
I realize my opinion is worth little to nothing but I am very contrary to closing this thread.

miracle.flame's neat compilation of patches is first and foremost a great guide with precise and detailed instructions about how to apply patches.

It has solved many problems for a big number of users who felt disoriented by the somehow chaotic disposition of the informations needed to run the patches smoothly and without risks.

The customized patch page at the Wiki at the moment is not really giving any extra help about how to install and use the various patches.

This is just my 2 cents...

I am working on the PC version of Scene.bin.

Better said, I would like to work on it because I don't really know where to start.

I checked the Wiki here http://wiki.qhimm.com/FF7/Battle/Battle_Scenes and I must thank people that put up a big effort in this although they recommend to edit the Scene.bin through a scene editor (but my problem is that those editors don't seem to be reliable at all).

I also downloaded a free Hex Editor and I am totally lost just by looking at the endless sequence of numbers as I open Scene.bin...

I will try my best to understand how it works though. Thanks for your interest!

558
Thanks for your answer, The Skillster!

I am a computer illiterate but I will try and make good use of your advice.

Hello!

In order to tweak items carried by monsters, I used Scene Explorer and first Scenester and then Scene Edit with the same buggy results.

If I change items carreid, the encounters will all become screwed up as reported here:

http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=6238.25

A quick way to see this is to change Tonadu, scene 59 by deleting one of the two items he carries. Doing that, the first fight scene at the very beginning of the game becomes against a Hell Hound instead of the two Shinra Soldiers like it should be.

Can anybody be of help here ?

First, I thought it was a bug in Scenester. I repeated the experiment with another Scene Editor and the result is the same. Now I might start suspecting the Scene Reader program itself unpacking and packing again the Scene.bin file.

If anybody has any idea about how to check this or if anybody has had successful experiences tweaking the monsters' items, I would love to hear from him.

Thanks for your patience!

Salk

Please miracle.flame, pull my Mod from your compilation with my excuses because I realize that the editor I used or the packaging program (but I would think the first) have critical bugs so that the game's encounters become really badly messed up.

I will try and contact the authors and perhaps one day I will manage to make it work out but as it is now, it's unplayable.

Again, apologies to you all, guys!

I am really sorry...

It would be nice, yes but illegal from what I got to read in different topics.

If somebody can instead prove me wrong about this then by all means do it!

I and miracle.flame will try and create a enhanced video database to see if we can bring the quality of the video to another level, desipte the limitation of the low resolution but this doesn't mean that we will make it public.

Sorry about that...

miracle.flame,

I have sent the file to your email address together with some small typo corrections. Note that the package has been compressed using 7zip (a freeware, excellent compressing utility) but feel free to repackage it with WinZip.

To answer your question, yes, I was speaking about Ruby and Emerald (the latter simply ridicolous for how much it's been doped up) but the Mod version I am sending you leaves them untouched as changes in this respect need to be ponderated longer. Perhaps for the next release, I might have those tweaks inserted as well.

Cheers!

P.S. lparcshinoda, I am italian too...  :-D

Following is the list of the changes made to every single ingame monster.
Can't go more into details than this:

SCENE REDUX
-------------------

The Mod modifies the quality and number of items carried by ingame creatures, altering the success rate of stealing from them according to the second number in parenthesis, while the first displays the chance of winning a different item after a battle (in the unmodded version, monster often had the same item as spoil of war and for stealing).

Sometimes there is only one number in parenthesis and in that case it is also specified if the item can only either be won or stolen.

The original Scen.bin is vastly inconsistent in its arbitrary distribution of the stealth success percentage in the game, often bringing the player to the verge of frustration. This will no longer be the case.

Some monsters can be morphed into an item upon acquiring a special Materia. In this case, the name of the item is displayed in the following list after the letter "M".

The Mod introduces some items that before were not carried by any enemy thus trying to rebalance the underrepresentation and uniformity of the number of stealable items.

The casual player is not recommended (and does not really need) to go through the list found later on as it could spoil the game by knowing in advance what kind of new items the player will be rewarded with.

Enjoy!

If I remember well, I never posted it here...

I have the details of every change brought to every single creature in the game but I hesitate making it public as it would spoil the meaning of the patch itself.

For the most, it leaves the creatures untouched (exceptions: Ultima Weapons' Hit Points) while it works to optimize the items found/carried by the monsters.

The original Scene.bin is a real mess with monsters that carry items you can steal and win from (?) with screwed percentage of success, often not computing the real value of the item carried.

My patch aims to correct this by rationally balancing the items you can obtain from a specific monster.

Some people have revamped the same file I have modded by adding extra difficulty through increased statistics. Not such a thing has been made by me as I'd see on the game difficulty as suitable enough for the average player. Useless to say that such Mods also overwrite the Scene.bin file and are thus incompatible with mine.

Cheers!

I have no space to upload my file at.

I might send it to you privately. PM me if you are interested.  :-)

I have created a neat (at least I think so) mod called Scene Redux which optimizes, corrects and tweaks slightly some creatures and the items they carry. Tools used: Scenester and Scene Reader.

No longer can a player win and steal the same item and no longer will the player be frustrated in ethernity trying to steal from monsters thus prolonging battles to infinte.

Now the Ultima Weapons on steroids have been toned down to make the fight possible without using too cheesy tactics to defeat them (their strenght is totally unproportioned compared to the other ingame monsters).

If you would like to include it in your compilation, I will be happy to share it with the community...

Cheers!

I succeded pretty well in creating my own library of higher quality movies for the PC version of Final Fantasy VII. It was several months ago so I don't really remember what tools I have been using save VirtualDub and some filters that I have been looking for on the web (one of it being highly optimized for AMD64 processing capabilities).

I have only tested it on the Opening scene and of course Introduction as well and it works flawlessly.

As size, the files are *smaller* than the original ones thanks an effective use of video compression.

Still, the total amount is slightly over 500 Mbs (compared to over 800 Mbs of the original, lower quality ones).

For copyright reasons, I would not be able to make my movies public but let me just say that the improvement over the original PC counterparts is pretty much high, keeping in consideration the limitation of the resolution of course.

Just wishing to thanks again The SaiNt for still working on his great Mod...Filtering the background would be a major step ahead. In my own humble opinion, even more important than the higher resolution itself. Keep it up!  8-)

It can't die untill it brings a nice bilinear to us!  :-D By the way, thanks The SaiNt!  :-)

You know, the second idea is nothing new. In the former FF episode was already so...More: each character had its own colour for sleeping tent!  8)

It's really great job, guys! The problem is that the hands and feet difference between Borde's and Stormmedia's creations might make the fianal result a bit inconsistent...

I personally would surely go with Stormmedia's take of it but I'm extremely happy to see this group work together and deliver such results! Really...Congratulations!

P.S. Stormmedia, isn't the red papillon in the last picture pointing to the wrong direction (up instead of down ?)

stormmedia,

very nice indeed! The proposal of ice_cold513 seems to be reasonable. You three guys together could speed up the NPC reconstruction project and your talent would be of great help!

ice_cold513,

I don't think stormmedia has doubleposted anywhere. His posts have different content although I understand what you meant to say.
