Title: Lightning returns: Final Fantasy XIII
Post by: ultima espio on 2012-08-14 11:52:06
Quote
Producer Yoshinori Kitase has revealed to Japanese magazine Famitsu that a new title in the Final Fantasy XIII series went into production and would be officially announced on September 1, when publisher Square Enix is set to hold an event to celebrate 25 years from the launch of the first title in the franchise.

The new game is known at the moment as the Lightning Saga, which means that it will focus on the character with the same name, although an official name will be revealed on September 1.

The game will probably use the main characters that gamers already know from the core XIII release and from its first sequel, while the mechanics stay firmly in the Japanese role-playing game genre.

The statement from Yoshinori Kitase is bad news for those who were hoping to hear news about Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which was recently rumored to be canceled and was then revealed to still be in development.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Square-Enix-Will-Announced-Lightning-Saga-on-September-1-284560.shtml

So it seems we may be getting FF13-3, or another game in that series. It'll probably involve Hope and Noel trying to restore the world again.

So Type 0 and vsXIII are no longer connected to FF13 then? :|

Also, as with the last one, I'm gonna have to ask that you don't clog this up with the usual Square is shit rants, FF13 sucks and so on. At least then we could have a decent discussion :)

Quote from: Wiki
According to its developers, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is a completely independent game, with a different story, characters and visual design. Although using the same Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology as Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2, the game is not directly related to either of them.

I'd read similar bits elsewhere, which always sounded to me as if yeah, Type-0, VS (and whatever else we may end up getting) do share the mythology, but that's about as connected or related they ever were.

Now the Lightning Saga, that sounds like it may actually be slotted for a proper sequel (FF XIII-3) release, but we'll probably need to wait for more information to really know for sure.

While not bashing, as I actually DO enjoy XIII (hey, it's got pros and cons.. helps if you don't try to directly compare games from vastly different ages of the industry and just enjoy what it DOES offer), but I do have to say I'm not terribly shocked.  Regardless of the many things Squeenix has done *right*, one thing they've really been bugging me on is their trend towards more and more series milking.

On the other hand, and bear in mind this is purely wishful thinking and speculation, but considering all the various differences we've been seeing in each title and its spin-offs, they *may* be pushing limits and testing various combinations of systems and features to see just what they can actually pull off.

The wishful thinking there being that IF (and yeah, it's a huge monstrous if) they ever did decide to cave in to the clamor and give us some proper, full HD remakes of some of the classics we love so much, they know very well they can *not* afford to drop the ball.  When you've got a title loved that much, there's really very little room for error before people start trying to burn your building down.  ;)

Either way, thanks for the head's up.  I  enjoyed XIII for what it was.. not so much for XIII-2 really, though in fairness I didn't really mess with it much before I set it aside for other things.  I'll have to revisit it later and see if maybe my initial reaction was just because I'd really expected something quite different.  I'll be watching this one though.  I like Lightning, so if they do up a decent game, I'll probably add it to my already massive FF library.

Squenix has finally learned. Why should they spend millions of dollars to make a new series and have to spend years on it. Instead they can use the same engine, re-use same textures and spend minimal effort and cost wise to just make a sequel and release one yearly. It's also great for us because we can now get a ff every year or so. 3rd time is the charm they say. FFXIII was ok, FFXIII-2 was better (content-wise). FFXIII-3 will be awesome one can only hope.

I for one still think Square Enix is a decent company and have some hope for future entries. Everyone is incredibly negative nowadays, and just picks any reason to criticize something without looking at the good side. Both games were good, the second being better than the first. Nearly all of the bad decisions made in the design of the first game were corrected in the second, making it rather enjoyable.

I was slightly disappointed however that ANOTHER entry in the lightning saga is going to be announced before we get a new trailer for versus 13 (The last trailer for the ffvs13 was released at the same time ff13-2 was announced). FFVS13 has been the game i've been excited about this entire console generation, way more than I was for 13 or 13-2. When the Fabula Nova Crystallis (Spell check?) was announced I thought this meant that all three games were going to receive somewhat equal treatment, and all get released before anything else was to come out. Now, 7 or 8 years later, they are getting ready for 13-3 while type-0 hasn't seen NA or Europe, and Versus 13 only has one voiced trailer. I did get the platinum trophies for 13 and 13-2, and as much as I would like to see how the story ends I am getting sick of the neglect to the other entries in the compilation.

And to answer the rest of your questions, type-0 and versus have nothing to do with 13, at all. The only thing members of the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation have in common is the mythos (Etro is mentioned in the trailer for Versus 13 and has a prominent role in 13-2), but Type-0 doesn't even have that so it was renamed to reflect that fact. The whole naming thing was stupid in my opinion, but switching Agito 13 to Type-0 was a good move. Now only if they would do the same things with Versus 13 and FF14. FFVersus would make a good series of action rpg's, Type-0 would be good for a series of handheld games, FFOnline would be a good series for online FF's, and the Final Fantasy should be the title of main series single player console rpg's.

Not another xiii... please... i guess it's like when it will be gone we will miss it... If the company doesn't go bankrupt by then I suppose the next big release will be something like the demo that was presented on E3 Agni's Philosophy

@Lion I've been observing your Griever cross, I don't know why I was actually feeling weird about any different versions of griever. Maybe for the same reason DLPB rages about any realistic ff7 model or fanboys :P :P (correct me if I'm wrong DLPB :P )

Well as an owner of an original griever necklace and a real griever ring (http://devyatkinffshop.ru/galereya/koltco-grivera) (not the lame one by Square's) you will allow me to express my opinion. But I still admit it looks so freaking cool and different as long as it is Squall's style :P :P

Hmm, unlike most ppl here, I actually enjoyed FF13 and 13-2 quite a lot and really hate that we didn't get Type 0 (yet at least)... Was really looking forward to it as well as it seemed pretty fun from the videos, even if it was just for PSP (HD re-release anyone?).

Sure 13 and 13-2, were no Final Fantasy 6, 7 or 8, story wise, (and it wasn't as utterly disgusting as FF9 story either), completely agree with everyone there! But it was still way above other RPGs I played before, and while the battle system was simple, it still allowed us strategize (in the end-game stuff) when beating the final boss with 5 stars or when I had to kill all the Cie'th Stone creatures with 5 stars aswell. I actually found 13-2 battles a bit duller even tho they were kind of more fun 'cause of the creatures, and faster as the menu didn't feel so stiff\slow during the battles.
The graphics and the videos were also superb, quite a few minutes of 1920x1080 awesomeness were included in that game to enjoy.

And honestly if people stop going on youtube of gamefaqs or whatever they go check, every time they reach a new monster they don't know, or at the damn 1st time they lose against it, and stop to think and strategize even a minute, they would enjoy the game much more or at least they'd feel there is quite a little bit more depth to it.
I mean, back in the days, every time me or my friends finished Final Fantasy 7 or 8, we'd exchange information about the new things we found like new Summons, areas or glitches on that playthrough, and that's what was truly fun about the game. If I could have (or chose to, which I didn't) just went on the web and have every single hidden detail spoiled to me in 15 minutes I don't think I'd love those game so much like I still do.
Now imagine finding all the monsters you can play with in 13-2 without a guide. :P

So XIII-3 would be nice IMO, but please SE, polish the damn think like XIII; 13-2 felt like a downgrade graphics wise.

@InuRa

I actually find the story intriguing enough to continue until its conclusion. I did like the expense from 13-2 ending, and it will be the reason why I want to see 13-3. But only as a YouTube watch.

i like the original griever necklace as well. but to me it's always looked kinda..... cheap. though being a huge ff8 fan, i'm still really jealous that you have the original and not the dissidia version.

Quote
After concurrently being revealed in both PAX Prime in Seattle and the 25th Anniversary of Final Fantasy event in Shibuya, the world now knows what a second sequel in the Final Fantasy XIII series of games is called.

Instead of calling it Final Fantasy XIII-3 (though for all intents and purposes it really is), the game has been given the moniker; Lightning Returns:  Final Fantasy XIII.  Wouldn’t ‘Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns’ sound better though?  Meh, what do I know?  Anyway, details concerning the title were also announced at the reveal which you can see after the jump.

Obviously, as the title implies, everybody’s favourite grumpy, bubblegum hair coloured heroine is back.

Yep, Lightning has returned and she is none to happy because when the game begins, she has just thirteen days to prevent the Doomsday Clock from ending the world.  So yeah, serious stuff.

The game is said to primarily take place on a group of four islands, currently known as Navus Partus, with access between these isles made possible through good ol’ fashioned monorail.  Visually, the islands are meant to deliver a myriad of designs inspired by both European cities as well as more fantastical and sci-fi inspired settings.

Instead of Agito, Versus, and XIII we get XIII, XIII, and some more XIII for the Fabula Nova Crystallis compilation lol.

But seriously 13 was okay, 13-2 was good, so hopefully the new game will follow the trend and be the best out of the three. Does anyone else think that it is not called XIII-3 because they may intend to make another entry in the saga? Only Square Enix could get away with a 13-2-2.

Well it says that it's the last entry into it...so probably not :P

I don't think they've all been disconnected, Type 0 makes references to XIII, and they even mention Gran Pulse.

Valhalla in 13-2 was supposed to be set at 999AF, a time that was supposed to be/is mentioned in Type 0.

Not that it matters very much but I thought they changed the name of Agito 13 to Type-0 because it had basically nothing in common with 13?

Also slightly off-topic, is this newest game being real time action give hope or cause for worry on the chances of Versus XIII actually being released?

Hated 13 and didn't buy it.  Ignore everything that comes out of Enix since. It shocks me to think that so many will go and buy 13-3, when it is clearly a cash in.

There's something missing these days in Final Fantasy ... something about the dialogue and writing that's hard to place a finger on. Almost like the characters are pretending to feel emotion instead of actually feeling it.
None-the-less, I did play all the way through 13 and enjoyed the hunts at the end and devising strategies to 5-star them. 14 is the first Final Fantasy I outright skipped, and 13-2 did feel like a cash-in, even though it had some upgrades that the original FF13 needed (such as open-endedness. towns, and the ability to revisit places), it felt like too little, too late. Or perhaps it felt like it needed to be DLC instead of its own disk. Anyway, I ended up getting the game free from a friend who didn't like it and I still haven't played through it. I won't be getting FF13-3 unless something similar happens, and I doubt I'll be playing it until I finish 13-2. Which may be never, but who knows?

I loved the ending but I'm feeling weird when i have to spend so many hours looking on walkthroughs to regenerate all different endings...I still can't unlock the last one. Also I wasted so many hours playing the chocobo races and I have to finish the jackpot for the last fragment I think.

Hey @LeonhartGR, you will not believe this, but I spent a whole night for my brother to get that jackpot from the slot machine. I found a way to push in the automatic command via the left bumper of the X-Box 360 controller, and did this for over 7 hours. Before that, I actually put some thought and strategy into the slot machine. I then realized that @DLPB is correct about Square-Enix having so many cash-in schemes. No matter how hard I tried, I could not get the three in a row black monster jackpot.

When did I do this? I think it was in Mid-June this year. Oh, and my brother purchased the most expensive version of the game. The soundtrack is amazing. I actually liked the DLC for the Battle Arena, because I got to see new versions of re-occuring monsters like Gilgamesh and Typhon and Ultros.

Just an FYI for everyone having trouble with the jackpot fragment, win about 10k casino coins (either by a chocobo strategy which I could share if you needed, although decent strategies are everywhere) or buy the Sazh dlc (you're give 10k casino coins I believe) then go to the girl near the slot machine and talk to her. The time she tells you the machine is on fire is when you should play. Then just prop your controller against something so the trigger is held down to auto play, then go watch tv or something and check back in on it in like 3-4 hours.  I platinumed this game and had a lot of fun doing it.  ;D

On topic: Since the game is only supposed to last between 1 and 2 hours, I wonder if it'll release with a reduced price. As much as Asura's Wrath looked cool to me a I refuse to pay $20+ for a six hour game. (Well that and Capcom makes you pay another $7 dollars for the dlc on that game to actually finish the story.)

I guess that could possibly work, but I just propped mine up against my gf's jewelry box, came back after a while and had hit like 7 jackpots. Just set the controller between two objects that are heavier than the controller to push the button in. Works like a charm.  ;)

The game is currently 30% complete

This will be Lightning's last game and will end with a happy ending. The game has just one ending.

The first FFXIII was story driven, meaning that the story pulled the player along. FFXIII-2 was player driven, meaning players selected the story. Lightning Returns is World Driven, meaning players have to consider how they interact with the changing world.

The game's in-game time works out to one day being the equivalent of one to two hours of real time. There will be increases and decreases in time.

The game is meant to be played and cleared multiple times. The volume is not such that it will take many tens of hours to clear once.

People from XIII-2 haven't died. Because of the effects of the chaos (I'm not sure if this is the proper English word), people have stopped aging and don't get old.

The Novus world has four continents, two natural and two city-type.

Depending on your actions, the remaining life of the world could decrease, and the game could end before the 13 day limit.

There are some times when helping someone will decrease the life of the world.

Defeating some enemies and clearing some quests will increase the life of the world.

Lightning is all by herself in battle, allowing you to concentrate more than when you had to control a party.

Lightning has become a considerably more refined person.

You can freely move around during battle. Some elements of the battle system are timing-based.

The battle system is close to action. There's an ATB gauge.

During battle, you don't select menu commands. Instead, you select abilities which have been assigned to buttons.

Hope will give guidance to Lightning via wireless com.

The city has clocks everywhere showing the constant progression of time.

:/

Well it just showed Lightning in the new world, with Hope talking to her and a battle. Also Chocolina was shown.

So, we have Hope, Snow and Chocolina confirmed to return. No word on what's happened to Vanille, Fang, Sazh or Noel yet. I wonder if Alyssa got erased or not...

Square-Enix still cares. It's been made clear that what the fans care about doesn't matter.

I'm hoping the recent management changes and reorganization will solve this problem, but you can't change a company's corporate culture overnight. At any rate, this game started development long before the reorg, and it's all but guaranteed to sell whether or not it's any good.

Below is a copy and paste of an IGN comment by a user (not me) named xwadwadw. I posted this because it's a decent summary of the info you can gain from the datalogs of the FF13 series, which explains the overall plot of the trilogy much better than actually playing the game does. It is fairly interesting and at the same time such a disappointment when you realize how many different ways they could have approached that plot to tell a much better story with a better main cast than the games had. It's a shame because obviously a lot of effort went into writing the mythology of the game and so little went into the actual script in the 13 series.

"Here let me help you. This should make everything about 13 easier to understand.

Much like that of Roman Mythology, the universe of Final Fantasy XIII is divided in two - the Mortal World and the Unseen World (the realm of the dead). In the beginning there was the Goddess Mwynn and her son the god Bhunivelze. Bhunivelze, lusting for full control over the Mortal World, killed his mother and in her death Mwynn was sent into the Unseen World.

This hostile takeover was successful for Bhunivelze, but it didn’t come without a cost. He had become extremely troubled at the thought that Mwynn might have placed a curse on the realm of the living so that it would one day be destroyed. To ensure this would never come to fruition, Bhunivelze sought to destroy his mother once and for all, but was unable to reach the Unseen World without losing power over the Mortal World. To find the entrance to the realm of the dead, Bhunivelze created the fal’Cie Pulse and tasked him with searching the Mortal World for the door to the Unseen World (now known as Etro’s Gates).

“Gran Pulse” is a planet that was named after the fal’Cie Pulse.

Pulse, also known as “Hallowed Pulse” and affectionately referred to by many as “the Maker,” is one of the high deities of Final Fantasy XIII’s mythology. According to the in-game Analects, after being created by Bhunivelze, Pulse created the world where Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 take place.

Pulse is indeed a fal’Cie (the first of his kind), but is known as “The Maker” because he also birthed both the world of Gran Pulse and all of the fal’Cie that inhabited it. His created fal’Cie all hold specific functions, but ultimately they all follow the same mandate of attempting to locate the door to the Unseen World.

While he has seemingly abandoned the world of Gran Pulse, it is made clear that he returned briefly to bind Lightning’s fal’Cie (they were all selected by the fal’Cie Anima, but bound to their Focus by Pulse himself).

No. To assist Pulse, Bhinivelze created the fal’Cie Etro. Soon after her creation, Bhunivelze realised that he had created here in the same likeness of his mother Mwynn. Bhunivelze stripped Etro of her powers and created the fal’Cie Lindzei soon after. Lindzei would be tasked with protecting the Mortal World and Bhunivelze himself.

With his fal’Cie at work, Bhunivelze put himself into a deep crystal sleep, only to be awoken once the door to the Unseen World was found.

Pulse and Lindzei were busy creating and exploring the many landscapes of the Mortal World, but Etro was lonely and depressed as she lacked purpose. In despair, she killed herself and disappeared from the Mortal World, entering Valhalla (the Unseen World). From Etro’s spilled blood, humanity was born and soon flourished. She felt a close bond with these creatures as they, like her, were destined to perish.

In the Unseen World, Etro eventually found the Goddess Mwynn. Mwynn was being overtaken by a strange energy mass known as “chaos.” Before drawing her last breath, Mwynn tasked Etro with protecting the balance of the universe, for if the balance between the Mortal World and Unseen World were disrupted, the universe itself would collapse. Unbeknownst to Bhunivelze, the demise of the Mortal World was not a curse by Mwynn. It was predestined to occur.

Now considered to be the Goddess of the Unseen World, Etro would greet those who died and passed from the Mortal World to Vahalla with a piece of chaos to hold inside them. This piece of chaos inside of every human came to be known as the “heart.” Providing that humans continued to be born and die, the universe would remain in balance.

Pulse continued to craft the world as he saw fit, while Lindzei created the floating paradise of Cocoon for the safekeeping of Etro’s humans. According to the Analects, Lindzei created Cocoon from piece of land taken from Gran Pulse’s soil. From then on Lindzei bore other fal’Cie within Cocoon to take care of those humans. This act was seen by the surviving denizens of Gran Pulse as a grand betrayal. Notes left behind see them viewing Lindzei as a villain and Cocoon as the “Viper’s Nest.”

One day, Pulse and Lindzei left the Mortal Wolrd, never to be seen again. The Cocoon fal’Cie (of Lindzei’s brood) wrongly assumed that the two had absconded to the Unseen World where Etro resided, however Pulse at least seems to exist on a Historia Crux-like plane of existence beyond Valhalla and the Mortal World.

Where it appears that the only way to enter Valhalla (the unseen world) is to die, the High God Bhunivelze will likely sleep until the end of time.

Etro loves all of humanity as they are the only beings who understood her plight, but yes - had Fang had succeeded in destroying Cocoon and ending humanity, the universe itself would have come to a premature end.

Etro saw the Unseen World as being filled with chaos and sought to correct the balance by infusing humans with lesser pieces of chaos. This way, she could ensure that the substance was dispersed between both the Mortal and Unseen World. If all of humanity were to simultaneously die, Etro’s Gates would not open (as the Cocoon fal’Cie wrongly assume). Instead, the Unseen World would be overrun with chaos, the balance would be lost, and the entire universe would collapse as both worlds faded into nothingness.

When given their focus, the party believes they are meant to turn into Ragnarok and destroy Cocoon. However, this doesn’t make sense in the scope of the game. Pluse, the Maker, was responsible for creating the world and seeking Etro’s Gate for the God Bhunivelze. The destruction of Cocoon at the hands of Ragnarok would result in the universe collapsing and Bhunivelze’s death. Why would Pulse ever want such a thing to occur?

The answer is actually pretty simple: his goal was compromise. Pulse, in his divine omniscience, knew that as long as Cocoon’s fal’Cie existed, they would seek the destruction of Cocoon and all of it’s inhabitants. The only way to stop them from continually initiating further conflicts that threatened the balance of the universe would be to destroy them. Unfortunately, in doing so, Cocoon would also die. In recognizing this, Pulse enlisted Lightning’s group with the goal of ending Cocoon while saving it’s inhabitants.

The true focus was completed when Vanille and Fang became Ragnarok and encased Cocoon in crystal - forming a supporting pillar to ensure it wouldn’t fall from the sky unto Gran Pulse. Lightning’s party was crystallized by Cocoon’s end, only to be awaken with Dajh and Serah from their crystal stasis shortly thereafter.

This release from crystal stasis was Etro’s final gift.

The act of mercy Etro bestowed on Lightning and her group at the end of Final Fantasy XIII cause a distortion in time, allowing the chaos of the Unseen World to grab Lightning from the Mortal World. Etro was able to minimize the damage and subdue the chaos, but Lightning was trapped in Valhalla and eventually charged by becoming her protector as she was forced into a deep rest.

Etro was praised by Gran Pulse’s oldest tribe as their patron goddess. This tribe would birth one girl every generation with a gift known as the “Eye of Etro.” This power allowed her to act as a seeress, capable of seeing the future at the cost of her own life. Each generation of Yeul would be aware of future events, but unable to change them. A l’Cie Guardian was assigned to protect her while she lead the tribe.

The last Guardian, Caius Ballad, was freed from his l’Cie fate by Etro who placed her own heart within him, granting him eternity to protect Yeul’s reincarnations until the end of time. It is revealed that a seeress’ life span shortens the more the number of possible futures grown and that’s why Caius will eventually try to reduce the number of possible futures to the point where there is only the on inevitable future left: world destruction.

Caius declares ware on Etro and master-plans the means to destroy her and shatter reality. He begins by entering Valhalla and battling Lightning.

Note: The official Square Enix statement is, “fal’Cie are an existence beyond human comprehension, possessed of incredible magic power.” I’m not sure that description does them much justice, though. Like in most other polythesitic religions, the fal’Cie basically exist as “lesser gods” (although, you could think of them as angels if you’re of the Christian or Jewish persuasion).

Concludes with Lighting Returns."
