Just tried some of these out - very nice work, looks incredible.

Are you planning to texture the world map too, to go with your battle scenes?

It seems like only certain ones are working for me, like the beach or the forest. The marshlands where you fight the snake and the grasslands in the overworld map don't work.

I havn't done the grassland scene yet. But it's strange that the swamp (STAGE08_T00_00)doesn't work, cause it's in the zip file. Could anyone test it?

Around 20 textures in 4 hours. Currently there are 28 (415 total).

It might be my problem, too. I followed the instructions and placed the battle folder in my modpath subdirectory (next to the Field directory), and none of the scenes work :( Still, all of SL's field enhancements work, so it's definitely not a configuration problem... ...This is weird. I'm re-downloading the file as I type this.

I tried everything, and they still don't work  :cry: Installation is very simple, so it's impossible that I messed up (as I previously said, SL1982's or YarLson's field enhancements work perfectly, as all of Avalanche's menu graphics, and I put your battle folder in the same folder as the field one).

Magochocobo's corel reactor works though, since it modifies the LGP archive itself. Maybe it's a problem with Aali's 0.7.8b driver ? (because of my ATI card, I can't use 0.7.9b *battles don't load* - or 0.7.10b *battle textures messed up*).

It might be selfish, but would it be possible to transform your PNGs into lgp files (like Magochocobo's rjaa, rjac, etc.) ?... ...I'm almost sure you can't do that, but I figured there's no harm done by asking ^^

It can be done but it is a lot of work. I believe this needs at least 0.7.9b to run properly.

I'm pretty sure that is exactly the problem, modpath didn't work correctly with battle textures in older versions if I remember correctly.
Looks like you may just have to wait it out for Aali's next version.

I second DLPB. Also, because I finally updated my graphics card drivers (and thus, can use 0.7.10b), your battle scenes now work in my game :D (so ignore my previous posts). They're beautiful, your work is stunning ^^

I can't wait to admire your work on the world map :)

Man finally ! The Battle-Scene Enchancement I was looking for on Team Avalanche section !

Many many thanks for the release ! Keep up the good works ! :)

Edit : I have tested the OPAC file from the post ^^ (OPAC / OPAD and a third one) I was waiting for the release for a long time ^^

Hummm Ati graphic card with Aali Driver 0.7.10b here (just disable "compress_textures" as I read something saying this can generate issues with Ati Drivers). The "Iceland" field is working here, but not the forest ?! Sl's enchancement working too ... and files seems good (not a download problem I think).  I'll test the  swamp now ... but can you tell us what are exactly the 10 battle field please (because on the Team Avalanche section, grassland scene is done, right ?). I know it contains Junon Beach, but battle only happends at special moments...

"Iceland" ; "Swamp" & "Beach" (regular Beach, not Junon Beach, not tested yet) are working... "Forest" is working too now ... no changes ! Game have just been restarted (but that's another location on the map ...). Ok seems it doesn't works on all forest locations ! For example it doesn't works for the forest of the ancient temple (the one who became black materia) maybe differents files name ?! (tested with Disc3)  :| Will test other battle scenes if you want (on any map location if it can help) just need to know all the scenes to test ^^

PS : For me using modpath is a way better than modifying LGP files, because you can easily enable or disable it ... for my opinion this is a good way to make mods ... (size isn't the problem to my regard). Oh and yes FL, your work is really awesome ! Like everybody says ...

By now I'm aware about 9 battle scenes :
- Beach
- Junon Beach
- Forest
- Mt Nibel
- Iceland
- Swamp
- Shinra Building (Elevator)
- Sector 8 Streets (Disc1 before jumping on the train)
- Sector 7 Train Cemetery

Tests for Forest scenes (means forest found on the world map near the locations) :
- Mt Nibel  --> Works;
- Fort Condor --> Works;
- Goblin Island  --> Works;
- Bones Village --> No battle ?! oO
- Ancient Forest --> Inside ancient forest did not works (original forest battle scene); outside no battle ?! oO;
- Gongaga -> Did not works;
- Ancient Temple --> Did not works;
- Mideel --> Did not works.

I think that all forest scenes have been tested, no problem with "Swamp" or "Beach" scenes for the moment.

The grass land was done by pyrozen, so that's why it isn't in this release
There are two types of forests - [forest] and [ancient forest]. The second one is not done yet

Yep that's right for the grassland, I've understand this release only contains your battle scenes ^^ (The other project seems to always be at 9 battle scenes)

Okay thanks for the explanation on forests ! Did not see the difference with the originals battle scenes  :? Sorry for my misunderstanding !

PS : Always searching on the 2 battle scenes I'm missing  ;D

PSS : So I assume I can temporaly change the [Ancient Forests] by [Forests] to wait for the new [Ancient Forests] scene. Only need to know the [Ancient Forests] filename and to copy [Forests] files twice with the [Ancient Forests] filename right ?!

wow! I'm really liking your take on the world map! i was wondering when someone would give it another go, but i didn't expect such great results. Be grateful that Aali changed the way textures are injected, it was a serious PITA when i redid it the first time. Most of my time was spent hex-editing and creating injector textures, which is probably part of the reason it is still 85% finished.

I think it'll will be done completely, yet the speed may drop radicaly, cause now there will be problems with my studies :P

Nice - I'd try and adjust the hue/color to better match the original. Great texture work.

The color is realy close to the original for most textures(like sand, grass or dirt). Exeption - clifs, photoshop changes the color pallete so I can't pick the original color=/

I'm asking that for 2 reasons :
1 - Using PNG Files allow us to use originals LGP files, a way more easy to use !
2 - It's even more easy to enable/disable mods and (for example) making screenshots or footages to compare original version VS modded one

from a glance at yer questions (hope i'm answering appropriately) - we could change the textures on battle models... but most of them have no texture. to have a fully textured model, we need to edit the lgp to insert our custom models. Otherwise you'd just be upgrade things like the eyes etc.

Direct mode is the way to circumvent messing with LGPs

Amazing work Felix.  I didn't expect anyone to attempt the WM after Pyrozen did it, but damn nice job.

I've never used Direct Mode, I've seen explanations on the cfg file, but I did'nt try it yet. Thanks to you two for your answers !

Direct Mode - Put the uncompressed files in the appropriate folder. Works as if they were in the lgp itself. Its a beautiful little feature.

that was about the time i gave up on finishing, lol. Alberto contributed them in his short time here, and i never bothered to redo them. You working is simply amazing, now i wish i hadn't wasted 6 months working on my version of this, though this is a totally different style.

I agree, I prefer the textures from Felix_Leonheart, but when did you do your version ? .... So all I want to say is that your version was really appreciate too !

i agree a move convincing skybox would be cool, but i would be happy with an increase in the draw distance of the current world map. right now things  don't pop into view until your nearly on top of them. not sure if it is even feasible to do this though, i have no idea of the mechanics behind the world map.

Indeed it doesn't seem like an easy thing, but on the other hand, hacking the draw distance is kinda common in pc games.

I think its ok.
Removing the blue would mean the meteor has passed the atmosphere thus having its real color.

I could be wrong and a recolor of that parts could make it better, so i'll wait and judge later.

I tried to explain this elsewhere, but there is a meld between real science and pure fiction in any fiction.  If Nanaki jumped 400m into the air during a cut scene and sliced off a rock with his teeth you would laugh.

Good Fiction has to have believability, even if not always being totally realistic.  It has to work within the laws it sets out.  This is one of the main reasons why Advent Children is god awful... it broke its own laws and suspension of disbelief.  It became a farce of special effects...

However, meteors colour is hardly a deal breaker :P

It was more of a joke what i said, as I've heard that kind of stuff about fiction before, yeah - AC definitely killed that. Even the normal characters were doing things regularly that you would think only people like cloud could do.

I think the reason it worked so well in FF7 was because that stuff was in there, but mostly as limit breaks - so it's like, "okay, only when this guy is powered up he can jump like this", etc. Having that happen all the time is like the main character of something beat every single person in existence all the time just because they are the main character.

Well the other thing is that you have to have that sort of thing in a game.  A game that plays like a film isn't very good... same as a film trying to be a game.  In a game you turn a blind eye to things like Limit Breaks and collecting balloons because it is gameplay and expected.  if you saw Cait rolling dice in a movie to damage enemies, you wouldn't :P  That's the ultimate problem with AC, it was geared completely to moronic titillation and not to sane level headed storytelling.  It tried to be a game within a film... and ended up being about nothing but graphics.

Just played it, and wow, this is a fantastic alpha.
Much further along than I though, it's really looking good.

Here is my feedback:

- The meteor may need to be slightly higher resolution, it looks a bit blocky.
- The chocobo footprints should be a tiny lil bit more obvious imo.
- The texture tiling is a bit too obvious in some parts of the snowy mountains.
- The waterfall on the river near the sleeping man, is it possible to blend with the river slightly?

These are really the only problems I can find, this is really great work. :)

Also a question, is it possible to texture the dust / water kick-ups from vehicles and chocobos?
Especially wondering about the water kick-up from the airship, it just looks like flying pixels lol.

Something interesting, earlier in the thread we were talking about meteor being purple, and someone posted a link explaining how that made sense seeing it through the atmosphere in the daylight.

Look at this, meteor before we fly over midgar:

As you approach the environment changes to a greenish color, but it changes meteor from a purple color to what would appear to be the real color of meteor - this was probably done to simulate the fact that midgar's Mako reactors have been polluting the atmosphere for years, thus making the atmospheric gasses and ozone layer weaker, and that actually makes sense.

Wow, that's some nice attention to detail right there.

Hmmm, there is one image that has a lot of worldmap effects in it. So it's possible to make a HiRes of the effects.

WMRP uses a modyfied world_us.lgp.  You can copy the vanilla world_us.lgp from the disk and that the bugs will dissapear.

That has got to be the most common battle area that sticks in my mind. That is amazing! Only thing I want to note is the ground may be a bit too bright compared to the original, as isn't it an overcast day? On a side note, that new interface almost makes it look like you're playing FF8 with FF7 characters :P

Try turning on linear_filter in the config file. I dont recommend you to play with that setting on but if that makes it look better there's hope for a driver-based solution.

Most likely the driver problem. Also check if the png files are not corrupted.

Is your path: mods\Qhimm\battle
or
mods\battle?

The first one is the correct path but the "Qhimm" Part is an example, it can be named anything.

Have you also set up aali's driver correctly? Open up ff7_opengl.cfg and find where it says "mod_path" and change it to what the folder in the "mods" folder is called. For example mine would be mod_path = Qhimm.


Also, if you're talking about the world map, that's a serperate download on the first page. Also remember that this is work in progress (WIP) so not all battle scenes/textures on the world map have been completed.

I think i just downloaded the battle mod, without noticing the world map enhancement link at the bottom, so i will download that too now, in the mods folder was just the folder i extracted (battle), but i have now created a folder called Qhimm, and stuck them into that, so hoping all will go well, changed the mod path in Aalis driver too, thanks for your help.

Try turning on linear_filter in the config file. I dont recommend you to play with that setting on but if that makes it look better there's hope for a driver-based solution.

That's some nice grass, that.

No, really. Most community grass backgrounds end up too flat (just a homogeneous sea of green), or far too grainy and busy. Yours seems to strike the right balance, which is pretty unusual. Nice work.

here is a copy of the installation instructions for my mod, it'll work the exact same way for this only replace the word "field" with the word "battle" in what's below and your golden

to install just place the field folder in your mod path "mods/(mod path)/"
for example if your using the Team Avalanche Graphical Overhaul then you would place it in "mods/avalanche"


also make sure you have the mod path set up and activated in Aali's config file
for example
mod_path = avalanche

Great work so far. Except now I can't get the music patch to work right. From what I've done, the music patch has to be in the ficedula folder in the ff7 directory for the music to work. But in order to get the graphic enhancements you have to have the patch in the main directory, but then the music doesn't work. I'm running on vista which may be the problem, but if someone could help that would be fantastic.

Dude, it's simple. Create a modpath (if you haven't already) in your \Final Fantasy VII\mods folder (basically it's just making a new folder, if you avalanche already created, use that!). Make 2 new folders called "battle" and "world" in your new folder. Put the battle files in your battle folder and put the world files in your world folder. After that, your configuration should look like this once you have open it. For example, here's mine:

And don't forget to turn off the cache.

Please redownload the aali's driver, and overwrite existing files including ff7_opengl.cfg. That will fix your problem.

Ok I have downloaded the latest Aali's driver, and it shows now most of the options including mod_path, I created a "mod" folder inside the "mods" folder, then I edited the opengl config to "mod_path = mod" and put all of battle files and world files in their respective folder, but it doesn't work, what am I doing wrong? I have also turned off the cache.

In my desire to simplify the task to Arsirus UK, I told him to use directly mods folder. And indeed, a subfolder must be specified ... I thought it would work well. I've tested it ... and right, using "modpatch = mods" does need another "mods" subfolder into the "mods" folder :/ ...  I use myself "Avalanche" as subfolder ... but hey I wanted to simplify ... (bad idea)

So if I use again the same example :

If you use on your config file (The only thing you need to specify on the  ff7_opengl.cfg file ! Not the complete path !) :

Then the correct mod path must be (I mean "physically" on HDD) :

So there was a little mistake and I'm sorry for that ... but right this does need a subfolder :/

Yep, readme files can't explain all the tricks of modifying images.
But for starters they must first learn the basics image editing (there are a tons of tutorials explaining them)
After that starts the most interesting part - getting the techniques for particular images/textures. You can find some tutorials or if you have some experience - guess from others work. So if you learn a lot techniques not at the same time, but only for a particular image - the learnin process will be much easier.

As for the process of redoing textures:
1) Determinate what do you want to do and how, check tutorials, get the needed brushes and textures.
2) Compose the image
3) Add shadows/highlights, adjust saturation, brightness, contrast, black/white levels, etc... to get a good lookin texture =)

UPD: Speaking of basic techniques. Warp and Distort are quite good tools=)
Here is what can be done with them by combining train graveyard scene textures and sl1982's background textures:P

wow I am suprised nobody has commented on this but excellent job on that scene above, makes me feel like a total newb  :cry:
anyway how did you accomplish this exactly, hours of work by hand I assume?

Firstly you make the texture in 2d, than you change the angle and stretch to match the original. The tricky parts were the inner parts of arcs where Warp was needed. Still CS3 on my note is not confortable like CS5, and that slows the process =P

after contemplating that thought....sqenix would probably be better off paying out these hardworking people for a true 100% remake...we all know what could happen if they're left to their own devices...

Could? No.  Will?  Yes.

Let's hope they never get round to it in their current mindset.  It will be a disaster in all but graphics and possibly translation.  I am happy to do my bit with the PC and make sure that it can't be ruined.

I have a note Acer 5930. But it's quite heavy. I buyed this Asus Eee PC 1215n  (http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=5832&review=asus+eee+pc+1215n). It meets the minimum requirements for Photoshop CS5 + the display resolution is bigger then on my Acer.

The graphics for the locations on the map:  Kalm, Gold Saucer, Niblheim, Chocobo Farm.  They aren't done.  They are all the original graphics and do not blend in with the newer world map textures.

For example - on the farm I have to rotate the whole texture 5-10 grades counterclockwise so that at least some of the windows will be horizontal -_- Also the textures are sometimes splited, and a bit shifted so they don't look seamless  :(

Btw, all the mountains are redone now, so now they have the same color pallete as original textures=)

I agree with the low poly count, but that aside this is stunning. Shame we've not found a way to "unlock" the WM mesh's secrets so we could modify it even further.

If I remember corretly Aali worked on that and found out that the format itself was way too restrictive and the map poly-count could only be improved by using some kind of overlay. Could have misunderstood him, though.

About Gold Saurce, I think it was stored in an independet P file (just like the rocket) and thus it could be changed easily.

Sadly, Midgar is part of the WM mesh.

Yes it would be great if the towns were models that could be edited in blender, because then you could adjust the uv map to fit on the above towns. As it stands now these are the only models that appear on the world map.

Well, I'll try to help.

First:
Do not use the "lgp" version of this mod.
Use the download links from page 1 of FL's Original Post--the one you replied to, and the one I'm replying to  ;)

Second:
Put the downloaded files into the ff7 mod path directory- this is the complicated part, if there is one
mod path is set in the ff7_opengl.cfg
mod path should be mods\avalanche or mods\DK if you are using the new Menu Overhaul.

Third: Continue to ask questions here if you need help, practicing English is hard but maybe only practice will make your English better. It is not a bother to me as this is an International community.

Just a random fact, but the Remix installer damages 179 world map textures.

I'm looking forward to the next update of this project!
These textures are absolutely stunning.
I appreciate your adherence to the original style.
Even the few remaining old textures fit acceptably with the new art.
I like those little reminders of what the game used to look like.
FF7 gets better and better . . .

Sadly it's hard to make anything good on a netbook (PITA to draw fast several lines in PS, moving vertices in blender, etc...), therefore all the good stuff you'll see starting from september^^

Pyrozen's are done in a different style so they don't match well. Towns and underwater are left to be done=)

Turn compress textures off too felix :P  will look better.  You should definitely see a difference with the font.
The texture compression is turned off, it's because of the low resolution of my screen

I have a quick question though apologize if its been ask on this but I have no issues with installing but I do have the Menu Overhaul Project installed but, Ive been trying to make both work at the same time but if i set the modpath to avalanche/DK it bypasses the battle and field but the menu works. If I leave it on just avalanche, field and battle works but the menu and the text are glitched. I'm new to all this but i usually try to figure it out on my own or reading in the topic.

Nope, if I want to do something particular I try to find a tutorial on a similar object/effect/material on inet, and then according the tutorial I use corresponding programs - Photoshop, GIMP, Blender, 3dsmax, AfterEffects, etc..

I am beginning to be concerned that these mods will draw negative attention from Square-Enix... They are so hq, if they want to make a new FF7 it's almost like it will be 3rd version.

haha +1000 modders are in dawn of a new ff7 since they unleashed those "dogs" it's hard to hold them caged anymore :D:D

You can delete anything in the cache folder. The game will regenerate it. If you use the Menu Overhaul there will be 2 cache folders. One is in the DK (or whatever modpath you use) directory and one in the game directory. You should clear all files out of those folders for any Mod you install just in case they change files that are cached.

I followed phillman tutorial but i don' t understand some steps notably with "the copy paste with transparency". Please, I need a perfect tutorial for this battle scenes.

Now, I have a question of my own. When using this world map retexture it majorly screws up world map dialog boxes. It pretty much has all the text going vertical on the left side of the screen. Anyone heard of something like this / have a way to fix it?

It's not these textures that are causing the text to scroll on the side of the screen like that.  I'm pretty sure it's DLPB's Menu Overhaul Project that is making that little snafu occur.  He briefly mentions it on his thread.  I also believe he said there will be a fix for it when he releases his final version of his project.

Never know guys reducing the lighting might make him look older, he probably looks young:
1. because of lack of facial hair
2. because in that light he looks like a cartoon.

I was thinking the same.
Make it darker and his skin will take less of a pink tinge, and hir hair will be more ruddy. Should be fine with the concept's stubble (:
(oh, any chance you could make the cigarette look more like the concept one? all crumpled and battered lookin?)

When the model is animated the old ice texture effect was noisy as hell (cause of 1px dots), so I had to change the effect.
Though I can return the edge lines from it:

Ouch, no surprise, some FeliX's works ! Magnificent textures as allways !

I'm not used to say the smallest critical concerning FeliX (I mean I never found something to criticize) but I have to agree with PitBrat.

Anyway, transparencies allways complicate things on FF7, so maybe it's not so easy to have a  transparent enough ice without it being too much. So I have to add, I agree with PitBrat, but it's not really a big issue to me...

Once you get Aali's driver the mods folder should be there by itself...in the ff7.cfg that you get[open with note pad] go down to the Mods section....you should see something along the lines mode folder = <some name>[illustration only! Not in the actual cfg].......in my case it is mod folder= avalanche[or something like that. don remember accurately, but you'll know it when you see it] cuz i installed team avalanche patch first......if your using regular files and not lpgs, you put all of those files into that sub folder...if there is no sub folder within your mods folder...create one and write the name in the cfg file after the "=". i think there was a space after = but not sure.....anyways, the wrong one will give you an error so just do the opposite of that....for example in my mods folder i have Avalanche folder.....i dump all mods into that folder. in cfg file, mods section, mod folder[or whatever it says] = Avalanche. save the cfg file. It should work

Just installed these mods and they are amazing!!! Some of the best work I've seen to date!! From readin the entire thread I was wondering if the new spell effects where ever released or if the odd out of place texture here and there on the world map was ever fixed?

I made some textures using Felix Leonhart's world Enhancements textures as a base. Most of them are just slightly modify or renamed and reused.

There's a  few textures I made from free textures online. Like I made the rocket texture for the rocket at rocket town from a pic of a real rocket and the condor texture at fort condor is from a pic of a real hawk.I used a free metal texture for the underwater reactor and fort condor reactor.

I would like to thank Felix Leonhart's for the original textures and give him full credit for all the textures I used and made that are just edits of his to fit where they needed to be. ( I've read that Felix has made most of the textures I did here but there not released so I made them myself) .

I know my works not as good as Felix's,  these are mostly meant to be stand in textures until  Felix Leonhart's release his. At first I was just going to do this as a personal mod but thought I should let other have it too.

I tried to keep everything looking as close to the original as I could ( thought the underwater textures are not tinted blue like the original games textures because I like the look of them without the tint the underwater textures are not the best) . This should replace almost every world and underwater texture.

Well I suppose this is the only topic I can go for help on this one.
To make it quick I have this problem with some of the mountains http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/138/fllj.jpg/ and this problem with the Temple of the Ancients http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/199/dpz.JPG/
Only like 5% of the mountains in the whole world has that basic textures however, but I would like to fix it anyway. And as for the Temple I don't think FL-WME has any textures for the temple or anything that can help me with that problem since that's what I have already installed anyway.
Any way I can fix these two issues? :(

Try and use the complete world map texture pack on my release thread. It has the missing textures added to Felixs' plus the above 59 additional textures. The temple of the ancients being messed up is strange indeed. If not an original version of the pc game then it is a corrupted uv map or they changed the uv map on later releases. After adding in the new png's remember to delete the cache or nothing will change.
