All capital and small letters along with their accent symbols done! Now what is left for the fonts is to revise the special characters and create Greek words for "Slot", "Memory", "Card" etc.. I also need to edit the png files to translate them into the Greek language.

Last progress update here:

I watched a bit of the video -- did you guys make more progress?  There are still parts that are bleeding from what I see... some of your text is too tall and going up into the bottom of the other text now (mainly your lower case letters). But it looks like things are getting better!

What I need atm is a way to edit the start screen. If I translate the words can someone replace them?  (New game, continue, credits etc) Or at least guide me through to do it myself.

Oh man... I remember there's a thread about that somewhere... let me go find it.

These text locate in mngrp.bin
Here is my screen shoot.

By the way, I dumped the text out here, in case you need it.

Code: [Select]
#WRITE(MyPtr, $DD6)
HAJIMARI<end>

#WRITE(MyPtr, $DDA)
TSUZUKE<end>

I dumped with Catographer, and you can modify the text and re-insert it to mngrp.bin with Atlas.

Where is this located? Found it. It's in the menu.fs

Thanks 5way!  I just found it myself.  mngrp.bin in menu.fs and you should be ready to go, Leon!

Have you already translated the kernel.bin with Carbuncle for the rest of your translation?
Title: Re: [WIP] Final Fantasy VIII Greek Translation
Post by: LeonhartGR on 2014-08-04 00:06:21
Yeah, ready to go... for sure... M4v3R program, ff8msg does not support Greek fonts. Tried to edit the text but it won't save. Program crashes every few edits too and corrupts the file. Also what does kernel.bin contain?

I'm really starting to hate on latin alphabet after all this torture. I find it a lot easier to translate the whole game by myself than mess with the alphabet...

Links for Catographer and Atlas please. Do they support Greek characters?

kernel.bin contains all names of abilities/items/magazines/spells -- essentially EVERYTHING that isn't dialogue.  You can use Carbuncle to translate it to your own language and then export it.

Opened Kernel.bin with carbuncle edited the font table on the right column Edited attack=Επίθεση, saved and of course it didn't work.

Skyped/messaged waiting for response! Also posted in a Greek forum and waiting for support from people there as well. Time lag is killing me. I want to progress!

Copyright and copyright infringement notice are not the same thing. Also, what audio did you have there in the offending spots?
Title: Re: [WIP] Final Fantasy VIII Greek Translation
Post by: LeonhartGR on 2014-08-07 01:32:08
Can't really recall exactly which one, but probably some overclocked remixes. I loaded some tracks from a FFVIII remix random folder.

Copyright and copyright infringement notice are not the same thing.

I've learned that already... getting close to become a copyright lawyer with all YT nonsense...

Fact is that I've never experienced any copyright notices on twitch before.

On the second and third muted part music was from DLPB's mod. The orchestral soundtrack I think.

Aight! Rcolly is another cool dude! I owe him much! He made a Greek version for Carbuncle but doesn't support any latin characters now. So it's hard for me to translate but "hey ho"... I opened 2 different instances to work more fluently. At least i can progress a bit now.

About the start screen and mngrp.bin it can gladly go f* itself in the bum since how the f* did you manage to read this Yugisokubodai and I can't?? I'm doing the exact same thing!!!

Oh gosh... whatever...

Great job!  I am on vacation right now, but I will finish your other palettes this next weekend.

You really should use my updated background image from SeeD v3.2 -- I like it better.  Tonberry only allows for 4x, so here are the 8x files:
start00_00 (http://www.13tomidnight.net/FF8/seedreborn/seed8x/start00_8x.png)

Hey 5way! In the png you created you need to correct VII to VIII for position [A8] in the font table because I can't use it! And please send me the rest of the palettes!!! With the corrected English quotation marks too (like the ones in the eg.)! Thanks!

eg.:
(Also the "V" has to have a half "I" before "II" in the last slots so as when we combine it will create a full "VIII")

I am on vacation right now...

I'm stuck in the darned city!
Title: Re: [WIP] Final Fantasy VIII Greek Translation

Its ok. My "vacation" is house and pet sitting for my sister... lol.  But she has a beach condo in Del Mar, California so I call it a vacation. ;)

Do you like the new title screen?  All you should have to do is rename and replace!
Title: Re: [WIP] Final Fantasy VIII Greek Translation
Post by: LeonhartGR on 2014-08-10 17:18:34
I'll try it along with some modifications I'm currently doing because of this VIII mistake and other stuff!

Have a nice time there, for me too, brother ... thanks for respecting my timezone! I usually need to actually wait until morning to get some decent support from people abroad!

Seriously... I need the "TIME KOMPRESSION" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8MN_0-XqEg) mouahahahahaha!!!

Don't you mess with <$C6><$C7>?

#WRITE(MyPtr,$E02)
//FINAL FANTASY <$C6><$C7><end>
ΤΕΛΙΚΗ ΦΑΝΤΑΣΙΩΣΗ <$C6><$C7><end>

If not, you can fix this simply by editing the font picture, using Paint or whatever photo editor.
In my memoroy, $C6 in the font is VII and $C7 for the rest I.

I need to find the text for the words "load", save places descriptions and "credits" and move the text. Is this all in mngrp.bin as well? Also where to find the words for the Monster name display in battle? Thanks!

Thank you Colly! This is a major contribution to my project! Thank you a lot... I don't know how to dump the text and edit the pointers though but I guess there will be some light shed until then... some day...

The pointers in FF8 is simple, except in the Kernel.bin is somewhat fuzzy.

You can open mngrp.bin in Winhex, or hextranslation, load the table file for the sake of reading.

Then, scroll down, or do a search for the word you need, locate the text block.
Remember, the pointers data is alway before (directly) the text data. You'll find it with ease.

Then, do some simple calculation yourself to see the relation between pointer value and text's address, like I guided last time.

Normally, the text address is the pointer value in reversed. For example, if the text begins at $1F34
then the pointer value is 341F.

But in mngrp, the pointer has some base value. Take the text address, subtract some value (we call it base value) then reverse the bytes, we get the pointer value. The pointer base value varries depend on the text block, so you must see it yourself.

And remember, in mngrp, the pointers are seperated by 2 bytes. This means there're 2 bytes between each ones.

I'm going to my mother home for a long time, and no Internet access there.

To dump out the text, you can use Cartographer. Download it from Romhacking.net.
The read me (how to use) is in the archive.

For example, this is the script for dumping the text block I sent you before.

Code: [Select]
#GAME NAME: FE8
#BLOCK NAME: Menu
#TYPE: NORMAL
#METHOD: POINTER_RELATIVE
#POINTER ENDIAN: LITTLE
#POINTER TABLE START: $D86
#POINTER TABLE STOP:                 $E42
#POINTER SIZE: $02
#POINTER SPACE: $02
#ATLAS PTRS: Yes
#BASE POINTER: $D84
#TABLE: mng.tbl
#COMMENTS: Yes
#END BLOCK

For other text blocks, you must change
#POINTER TABLE START:
and
#POINTER TABLE STOP:

Where they start and stop, you must find it yourself.

And you must change
#TABLE:
to your table file name. Be sure to use the English (original) table.

Yeah, just over two months.

I'd assume that's supposed to be at 1600 hours, aka 16:00, aka 4:00 p.m., depending on your locale's time conventions.
