Title: Gamers Window Relocator
Post by: Timber on 2010-06-20 15:00:29
This handy tweak fixes a problem that has bothered me for a long time, and can be used with any Windows app, not just FF games.
Running games in fullscreen prevents you with doing other things on your pc properly, is slow and causes flickering when going in and out of window focus, and is a nightmare for people who use multiple monitors like me.
On the other hand, running the game in a window at full resolution doesn't fit the screen because of the Windows title bar.

So the solution I have found is Gamers Window Relocator. You can grab it here: http://gwr.orekaria.com/

GWR is an application intended to fit the window of a running game so that you do not see the title and borders (even when they really are there).
For optimum result, you must configure the game to run in window mode with the same resolution as of the screen
GWR works with one or more screens. When there is more than one, the window is fitted to the nearest screen corner.

How is this Final Fantasy related?

Because Final Fantasy is a game that can be played in windowed mode?

It was actually really hard to find an app that had this feature, so I thought I would share it.
I never play without it now, being able to easily switch between work, and having a fullscreen FFVII on my second monitor is great.

Stuff doesn't have to be exclusively for FF to be able to enhance the experience you know, like that speed hack that kranmer found.

You know you can set windowed mode with the custom driver, right?

Yeah of course, that's not what this does.
This let's you position the windowed game so that it takes up the the full screen.
For example, my second monitor is 1360x768, yet if I set the game resolution to be 1360x768 windowed mode through the custom driver, it will be too big for the screen because of the windows title bar. This app will put the window up in the top left corner, and position it perfectly, which you are unable to do by dragging the window.

Or, you can keep the fullscreen setting on and use the hidden settings window_pos_x/y to position the game wherever you want it.

Oh wow, I didn't know about that! I guess that's why they are called hidden settings...

Anyways I tried it, and it doesn't really have the desired effect because the Fullscreen setting still changes the Windows 'main' monitor res to match the game res, even though I position the game on a different monitor.

Just out of curiosity, what other hidden settings are there? :D

Okay, then turn off the fullscreen setting, those options still work :)

Hidden settings are hidden for a reason; they're not really useful under normal circumstances. Most of them don't even do anything in a release build.

I already tried with fullscreen off, doesn't seem to work, only works with fullscreen on.

Actually I noticed that when I start ff7.exe the window will pop up in a random spot, with or without the pos settings activated.
I just opened and closed it 4 times in a row, and each time it opened in a different spot haha, how strange.

You're absolutely right, those options have no effect in windowed mode. Ah well, you already had it covered anyway.
