And the story for Paladin's Quest was just repaticious: "Find that dungeon, beat it." Nothing new you know as in storywise...

They were made by Squaresoft Japan, but they are actually a different series called "Saga." "Saga" "Saga 2" and "Saga 3" were translated into English and renamed "FF Legend" "FF Legend 2" And "FF Legend 3"

ANYWAY
My favorite RPGs (because of story and my first impression mostly)...:
1. FF 6 (Gave me a very nice first impression when I first played it)
2. FF 7 (Who doesn't like it?)
3. Tales of Phantasia (If you haven't played this game... give it a try)
4. Chrono Trigger (Quite possibly one of the best RPGs ever)
5. FF 4 (well, it seemed like a lot better game the first time I played it, years and years ago. I loved it then :-p )

Note those aren't really in any particular order... Just the order I thought of them in.

My least favorite FF is FF8 - - I think its an ok game, but its just a bunch of fancy graphics covering up a pretty crappy gameplay system (the drawing / junctioning crap) and an "average" story (as has been addressed in numerous threads in the past). FF9 is a little better I think, but not too much. FFMQ was easy and rather predictable. Diablo and Diablo II may be RPGs, not really. Haven't tried FFX, opinions?

Epecially the multi-player mode. It's really cool to have your character about to be KO'd when your friend (who's sitting right next to you, and NOT somewhere over the internet) saves your butt. And then, of course, there's the hours and hours of fighting over who gets to drive Flammie...... :P

Hmm, for some reason I seem to remember posting this before, strange.

Anyway, I havent played many RPGs, only FF7, FF8, FF9, Xenogears, and a bit of FF6 and Chrono Trigger, so:

1) FF7
2) Xenogears
3) FF9
4) FF8

I've heard FF6 is out on PS1 in the UK now, is it true? And what's it like? Are there improved graphics and stuff? If it is out I'm definitely getting it.

The multiplayer aspect of FF9 is essentially the same as the one in FF6.

As for Secrect Of Mana, think simultaneous multiplayer 2-D Zelda. What I meant by it was that your friends are physically sitting right by you, cause it's a SNES game.

whoo! that's probably the best that I've heard about FFX. and FFVIII is cool in the fact that you can't be Rickish (meaning gaining levels until everything is pathetically easy) in it because everything gains levels with you. SO it makes it more of a stratagy RPG, and since I don't ever gain levels in the first place it makes it easier for me...

Evolution and Evolution II by UbiSoft... those games sucked.
My only other non-like rpg is Diablo II... Im not sure what exactly makes this game unlikable, but it repulses me for some reason...

Best RPG of all time (excluding current PC compatibility): FF7

(EDIT: You will all be happy to know that I took out a rather descriptive description of what Evolution, in my opinion, DOES...)

FYI it is possible to complete FF8 without lvlling up any single character once. :D
Well IMO FF8 is easy. :laugh: (Imagine Squall at LV7,Selphie at LV8, Zell at LV8 with a LV100 Shiva wiping off Elvoret in one round the Dollet Tower.... :lol: )

Post by: Goku7 on 2002-03-14 23:55:00: Good in that it has the same addictive qualities (interface-wise) that Secret of Mana has, but bad in that its one player only. Even though there's two playable characters in the game, and even though you can switch your control like in Secret of Mana, the other character seems to be required to be A.I. controlled. :(

But as one of many who was exposed to CT in it's prime, I'd have to say its more of a classic RPG. It's not the best, but it's still a great classic.

Well, that's easy. When you're at the dollet tower mission, kill off Squall and Zell using Seifer. From there.... you know what to do :D Pummel down galbadian soldiers till your Seifer reaches LV60 (while Zell and Squall are asleep :) ) and your GFs should reach LV100. By that time I have spent around 5 solid hours, and laughed all my way through Disc 1. (With abilities like STR +20%/40% Zell can achieve 1000++ damage per hit at his lowest LVL :D )

Post by: eerrrr on 2002-03-18 18:21:00: I'm looking forward to FFVI for the PS. They didn't have it in Game last time I went there so I'll hopefully get it on saturday. If only they'd improved the graphics though, I get really bored of games with bad graphics.

Post by: eerrrr on 2002-03-19 15:53:00: Well my PS is modded, so I can play imported games on it anyway. I heard that the UK version of FF6 has more FMVs than the US version, like actually during the game instead of just at the beginning and end.

Post by: Aaron on 2002-03-19 17:49:00: US and Japanese versions of FF6 all had 3 movies. One at the beginning, one at the end, and one at the opera I think.

FF5 only has 2 movies though.

[Edit] P.S. The Opera movie is just some scenes that appeared in both the other movies with the opera music playing in the background.

Actually, there is another difference. They've slightly changed the battle transitions to take advantage of the PSX's (relatively compared to the SNES) advanced framebuffer abilities. If you're thinking "swirly screen", well, they did that for FF5, but in FF6, they did a transition similar to the one in FF8 (as in being not-so-swirly.)

Post by: eerrrr on 2002-03-20 15:08:00: I went on the Square Playonline thing and looked at the flash FF6 thing. I noticed the grapihcs were *slightly* improved; the images are a bit clearer, a new sprint thing is added, text grammer is updated or something, and a couple other things. So, yeah, the PS version has been improved over the SNES version.

I don't understand why such and old game can be so slow on the PS. If it's about the code, why didn't they change it slightly? I hate it when game makers get lazy like that.
Have you heard about Halo? Apparently the long-awaited game was spoiled by the fact that a lot of the rooms were copied and pasted throughout the game, even all the monsters and stuff were positioned in the same place, another lazy job. That's what my friend said anyway, I'll find out during easter when he gets an Xbox.
