Title: A good screen recorder and how to use it?
Post by: Travis on 2010-07-27 06:46:43
Ok, I hear fraps is pretty good, but here is the thing.

I need to know what is a good screen recorder and how to use it.

I am going to be using it for tutorials, but also FF7, so basically... what is a good screen recorder and how would I use it for ff7.

that was an extremely quick reply.

I have used camstudio for things before, but it's quality issues annoy me so something else would be much better.

fraps is much better, but puts out huge files, so youll need something to convert them to something smaller without losing quality.

Camstudio works better for app tutorials, while fraps is more suited to motion-specific tasks(I.E. Games)

if it comes out as a .avi file, one could download the xvid codec then use virtualdub to compress it down to a better size without losing much to any quality.

ok... if I was to only download fraps... what could I do to down the size, but keep the quality without downloading anything else.

And I have tried to use fraps before, but it confused me to heck... so I am thinking about just googling how to use it rather than torturing you guys with questions.

Thanks for the replies btw.

i don't think you can bring the file size down without using my method, but that would involve downloading, i apologize, as i have no other idea :P

Somebody will come on when it's not this late and give me some more help as well, so no worries.

Big filesizes aren't an issue; it's easy to compress them to something more reasonable without a noticeable loss in quality.

The problem with fraps is the severe slowdown. If you're using something like a core 2 duo, you'll have trouble getting a normal framerate even on FF7. Camstudio has some problems, but it doesn't hit your framerate very hard.

My only issue with Camstudio is the lack of motion capture. Watch a youtube video comparing camtasia to fraps. Hell I even have both versions on my youtube if you want to see. Camtasia just CANT follow movement without skipping to hell. Fraps can.

I have an AMD Phenom II 955 BE 4x OC'ed to 4.0ghz
2 HD5770's

Framerate drop in ff7, 2 in battle, 6 in field.

Framerate drop in Dirt 2, GHIII,Resident Evil 5, Spore, Prototype,Etc is NEGLIGIBLE.
Sometimes you can see it dip from 60 to 59. Ive always wondered why such an old game would slow fraps down worse than Resident Evil 5 at 1920x1080 Max Detail with 32x Forced AA and 16x Anisotropy with triple buffering and all other possible options selected.

No.

Camtasia Studio is a paid software by TechSmith. It is also crap. (http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.asp)
Camstudio is an open source software. It has some framerate issues that can be fixed in post production (doesn't record sound and video at same speed O_o), but is otherwise pretty good. (http://camstudio.org/)

You are correct, I thought my trial said Camtasia Camstudio, not Camtasia Studio lol.

as i said before, HC2 completely blows, it skips very badly and the image is always fuzzy, and sound quality, when there IS sound, is bad as hell. trust meh, you dun want it
