I joined the open beta and got the game running on both Windows Vista and Ubuntu.

Pro tip: if the downloader seems to stall, try setting up port forwarding in your router (probably ports TCP/UDP 55296-55551, UDP 443)

While the rest of the world plays an open beta for FFXIV, secure in the knowledge that Square will probably reset all the characters when the game launches, and that they'll probably charge $15 a month to play, I'm having a hell of a time playing the now free-to-play Lord of the Rings Online.

Right here (http://www.lotro.com/). First link on a google search for Lord of the Rings Online. You could have found that yourself.

I've played for a few hours so far, and it's pretty fun. Disappointingly, it seems not to give a shit about actually feeling like Lord of the Rings, introduces a bunch of new characters and cities that Tolkien never wrote, etc. Still, for those who either don't know or don't care that much about accurate lore, it's a pretty good MMO. Especially since Friday, when they made it free.

FF14 is pretty good so far but not as good as I was hoping for  :(
