Title: FF14 "Horsebird" racing!
Post by: Kudistos Megistos on 2010-09-19 08:36:33
Apparently, Chocobos (チョコボ) have been renamed "horsebirds" (馬鳥) in the Japanese version of FF14. Naturally, otaku are up in arms at the replacement of filthy gaijin words with words from filthy giajin that they hate even more. They suspect this is because FF14 is being secretly aimed at the Chinese market (which would also explain the fatigue system; the Chinese government requires MMO developers to do things like this to combat the evil addictive effects of such games). A number of other staple FF terms were renamed the same way.

Or they were to be renamed. Apparently, otaku bitched so much that Squeenix changed the names back.

There is a lesson to this. Squeenix will listen to fans, but only if they speak Nihongo.

The NSFW source. (http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/09/18/final-fantasy-xiv-chocobos-renamed-horsebirds/)

No publisher REALLY cares for any market outside the one they aim for or the native market
Korean devs will rarely if ever listen to anyone but koreans
same goes for the japanese
its not QUITE as bad with western games, but they usually dont listen AT ALL anyway

With big Japanese developers it comes across as worse because Japan only accounts for a minority of their sales.

Then again, they might actually get more money from Japan because of all the shitty, overpriced merchandise that they can sell and because otaku will pay $100 for a game that has just come out (srsly; that's how much they sold FF13 for).

Geh?! Horsebird? How do they pronounce that? There are too may ways:

umatori (which would be horrible, but most likely)
bachyou (second most likely, prefix of horse with suffix of bird used in compound kanji names like that)
(unlikely, but possible candidates)
matori
taka
tato
tatotsu
banka
banto
bantotsu
meka
meto
metotsu
maka
mato
matotsu

In fact, they all sound pretty horrible. I'd almost rather go with chyouba (birdhorse) to be closer to the original chocobo.

OFF COURSE!

Quite an ironic post, seeing as this is one of the few threads here that hasn't gone off course 8)
