seeing how FF7 compatibility with newer gfx cards/drivers sux big time, i was thinking of doing a driver/card/OS comparision list,
thinking how i got FF7 working today i might leave, depends on the demand, BTW, anyone know how to get rid of that annoying bent text u get (the background is fine, the cursor is incorrect, and transparent fonts (in battles)arent displayed properly, text/text boxes or kinda zig zaged)?
-
Patches for FF8 can be found at Electronic Art's website and ff7 at eidos' website.

Restarting (the game! Not computer.) sorted me out fine.
Best nVidia Detonator drivers to use with FF7:
6.50
12.41
FF8:
6.50
12.41
14.10

Best for both FF7 and FF8 are 28.32 (the latest)...
And they also work with OpenGL stuff (ONI for example..)...
The earlier versions ('cept 12.41 as far as I remember)
worked with fine D3D -OR- OGL...
And that kinda sucked...
So 28.32, gozaruyo
-
Nvidia finally fixed the 8 bit pallet in their drivers.
Use the Detonator 29.42 for best play on FF8 and FF7.
For FF8 all you need to do is use the new drivers. No special setups, necessary. (well, except for the Geforce patch....but that's a given)
For FF7 you need to use the original FF7.exe with the FF7config.exe from the TNT patch (The original FF7config.exe won't allow you to choose the Hardware Acceleration option). If you use the FF7.exe from the TNT patch, you'll get a Black screen lock up crash.
This was due to the fact that the TNT patch was meant to be used with drivers that have 8 bit pallet disabled. I used to tell people to use Rivatuner to turn off the 8 bit pallet, but now that Nvidia fix the problem, Rivatuner is no longer needed.
-
If you can find them, I notice the Beta 29.80 drivers work the best on both games, no problems for me as far as I can tell (naturally you need the patches...I have a texel problem with FF7, but that's because I've been screwing around my comp too much), not to mention everything is crisper and sharper. 4x FSAA...W00t.
Does anyone have any mirrors to the FF8 Soundfont stuff or any if Fice's? The whole server is down...
-
hmm how about radeon? whats the best drivers for ff7? radeon 8500dv?
as for links someone had a mirror to fices site?
-
is there any alternate links to the Seraph Sephiroth soundfont? the links dont work. does anyone eles have it.
-
I know it's taken me too long :( But I've modified my redirector (http://ficedula.cjb.net) so it once again points to a more-or-less complete mirror of my site.
-
wow! fice where u been man?
whats the best ati drivers for ff7?
-
from what i've tried, i came up with this: the newer version of the driver, the better that is.
but i have not tried to apply so called "XP patch". so, couldn't tell you there :o
ATi Radeon 8500 with 64Mb here
-
Simply update the latest ATi drivers and install the 1.02 patch and set the defaults in the ATi display settings. Then, inside ff7 setup set the Direct3d to normal TNT. do not bother selecting riva128. Test the game. If things aren't looking good (crooked text, squiggly pictures), then go into your ATi setup and change the settings.
In windows XP it is so lame because I still haven't found the ATi setup anywhere. you don't even need to change any setting with that. if you still get problems, try getting a 3rd-party display changer (powerstrip). That's all I can really suggest for radeon configs.
-
Well as you guys said i swiched to 28.32 detonators and found that some gfx bugs dissapeared. But still i cant enable the tnt fix from the configurator. With the 8-bit palletized textures on i can get d3d acceleration but cant enable tnt fix,and with 8-bit palletized textures disabled i get a fail at the test in the configurator...Using the ff7 patch and the tnt fix.Is the tnt fix going to improve the game?
-
These days, it's best just to play FF7 in Software mode. You can put it up to the same resolution (640x480) with no slowdown these days, and all the timing even in a couple of the subgames are correct.
Best way to play FF7, in my opinion.
-
not true, at least for me. in software, ff7 textures look pixelated and crappy, and shading (like barrett's back or the gradiented windows) is not smooth. it visually looks much more impressive in D3D mode.
-
Correct. Software mode uses no Anti-Aliasing or FSAA (if you have it enabled anyway) resulting in crappy looking textures and less-impressive looking shading. Not to mention the battle swirl isn't as cool in software.
D3D is the way to go, even if you can get full speed in software.
-
Errr so can anyone answer my question?
-
If the game looks fine without the TNT patch, then applying the TNT fix will not improve anything :P
But, I think the 1.02 EXE has some game bug fixes in it.
-
Correct. Software mode uses no Anti-Aliasing or FSAA (if you have it enabled anyway) resulting in crappy looking textures and less-impressive looking shading.
Well, its not due to a lack of AA or FSAA, it's something far more simpler. The software mode simply does not do Bilinear Filtering on primitives that it draws, resulting in a PSX-look, since the PSX itself can't do that filtering either.
-
Can Hardware mode do Anti-aliasing? Whenever I enable it through Display Properties (using GeForce 3) the game refuses to start (black screen and that's it, Eidos logo doesn't show).
-
Err, I meant bi-linear filtering, not anti-aliasing :P
Anyway, I believe people have gotten FSAA to work in FF7 (I haven't made the attempt yet) so I think it's possible.
-
Well,i do have force 4x fsaa with my geforce 2 and the game works...so it should probably have it
-
Which drivers and what version of them are you using?
-
Im using nvidia detonators 28.32 drivers and i have enabled force 4x antialiasing thru rivatuner.Using v1.2 but with the nvidia box unchecked since i get a fail at 8-bit palettized textures.Other than that i do get d3d acceleration

The following links are broken:
- Sephiroth1999AD's FF7 AWE Soundfont v1.00 (smallest version)
- Sephiroth1999AD's FF7 AWE Soundfont v1.04 (latest version) [NEW]
Ficedula's website is functional, however non of the file links seem to be working (here on my end that is).
Would anyone happen to have any mirrors, or can temporarily host the files? I recently got back into FFVII, and I really want those files. Thank you in advance!
-
Can't do anything about the soundfonts, but I've fixed the downloads on my site; thanks for the warning ;)
-
Also broken are all three configurator links.
In this case, its really bad, 'cause I've got someone over at the x3Dfx forums sayin' that they won't work.
Would anyone mind fixing them? Or, did anyone create a mirror for them and not tell what the link is?
