Hey guys, I decided to bring this thread (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=9158.msg122840#msg122840) back, but I didn't want to risk the necro. So I'll just continue from here.
You know when Sephiroth is at the inn at Nibelheim (through the flashback) how come when Zack asks what he is looking at, Sephiroth responds "This scenery. I feel like I've been here before" or something like that? Why would he say that he feels that way? I always questioned this and as to my understanding, I found no such reasoning.
-
Wasn't he born in Nibelheim? Hojo, Lucrecia, and Gast (and Vincent) were all there thirty years before the game to conduct research (the Jenova Project), and it was then that Hojo injected Jenova cells into Lucrecia's fetus.
-
^ Yeah, that's it. No mystery there.
-
Except that Sephy-san had some outstanding spatial memory as a newborn :P

:P
Another one is...HOW did Hojo get those babes at costa del sol? :-o

he offered them teh scientific enhancement :P we all know what people in towns like that are like.
-
Hojo has connections. He can get them free boob implants. To that end, they're dead set on making him a happy old geezer.
-
Of course, how silly of me not to have realised :P
They could have been call girls for all we know...
-
Hm, that's what I was thinking as well; that Sephiroth might have been "created" in Nibelheim. Turns out my hypothesis was pretty much on the spot. ;)

Damn, you beat me to it. He probably told them about his "enhancement" if you know what I mean haha.

Confuzzlement is a normal reaction to the shock of losing the game.

In all seriousness, this is actually true. Here's Hojo giving tips on picking up girls:

Hojo is a gender-reassignment pioneer. They were actually born men.

I've also noticed something odd.
It would appear that the stabbing force that the MPs do are rather much stronger than the bullets fire from their machine guns.
Seems to me that Shinra weaponry isn't really all that powerful.

I believe it's a pistol whip.
In any case, it makes sense from a gameplay perspective if not a realism one. They have a high damage attack that's close-range only, and a long range attack that's less powerful. Cloud has to be fearful of the first one, whereas Barret gets more damage from the second.

It's a mystery to me how Zack dies from a couple of gunshots when the entire party is getting blasted and cut and blown to pieces by magic and still manages to survive.

That's because it's a video game.
-
Zack dying from gunfire, Red XIII not using a Soft on Seto, Cloud not using a Phoenix Down on Aerith... I guess you could say that what happens on the field doesn't follow the same rules as what happens in battle.
That still doesn't explain how Zack dies from gunfire when Cloud survives being impaled through the heart as well as later falling off the Sector 5 Reactor Bridge into Aerith's Church, and when Wedge similarly survives falling off the Sector 7 Pillar. Both characters are supposed to be significantly weaker than Zack, but I can only surmise that in reality, Zack is a real wimp :P
EDIT: Zack also survives a fall from a tremendous height in a similar style to Cloud in Crisis Core... shouldn't that be far more "fatal" than having a round of measly little bullets discharged into you?
-
in reality, Zack is a real wimp :P
Bingo!

The world of FFVII probably just has its own set of unique "laws" like our laws of physics. The effect of the "plot" as its called by theoretical lifesteamicysts renders actions which would usually be effective, ineffective. 'Plot' causes phoenix downs to be ineffective, but can also have the inverse effect of enabling weak individuals to survive horrific trauma. This 'plot' is a very mysterious force indeed.
There is at least once mystery that always bothered me. The Shinra no. 26 rocket (i think its 26) had to be shut down or else Shera would be burnt to a crisp. Alrite...makes sense. However, when the forces of 'plot' are applied, she is able to survive the scorching heat. Where the hell was she, and how did she survive the heat of the rocket taking off? Anything I can think of, could have been done the first time around (climbing the ladder out of the room, hiding in the escape pod). Looks like Cid didn't have to shut the rocket down the first time after all.

I might as well give my insight.
Aeris's Death: When a player "dies" in combat, it is counted as K.O., which means knockout. So, the player is not actually dead, just unconscious. Thus, using a phoenix down would "revive" them. However, actual death...
Seto Stone: He's probably turned to stone completely from the inside out since he got hit by those arrows, and I'm pretty sure turning completely to stone from the inside out would effectively prevent the use of a soft. Plus, it's been a lot of years since he turned to stone, so using one may not work anymore.
Zack's death: The FF7 group does get hit by a lot of crap, but Zack was gunned down by what looked like an army of Shinra soldiers, as well as helicopters and missiles (I think that's how it played out in Crisis core, it's been a while since i played). Cloud and the gang, i assume, play out their various battles not by standing in one place, but actually moving around, attacking the creatures. Zack was surrounded by an army of guys, having bullets rained down upon him.
Cloud getting stabbed: ... it hit an empty spot...
Shera in the Rocket: uhhh........ Fairies?
There, that's what I got. Tear it apart if you wish, I don't mind. If it don't make sense, I blame my ADHD and lack of ability in explaining crap. The last two parts I didn't give enough of a crap to write anything about, cause it's dinner time.
-

That seems reasonable. And of course, if they all get KO'd, it is safe to assume they'd die anyway.
Although, monsters never attack or attempt to gobble down'd allies.

Aeris, Zack, and Seto sound about right as for Shera you got a point she could of just climbed in the escape pod the first time. So that's probably what she did since she had time to think about the first incident and wonder what she could of did. As for Cloud he was emotional he just lost his friends and town. He was filled with rage and adrenaline, people do amazing things while they got adrenaline pumping
through their body.
That seems reasonable. And of course, if they all get KO'd, it is safe to assume they'd die anyway.

Ruby weapon doesn't technically gobble them down but he does use quick sand to remove them maybe he was gonna gobble them later?
-
You guys forgot to mention that Zack was pretty much outta it and weakened by the experiments that were being brought onto him.
-
These are sound like rational explanations. The only thing is that we kind of have to assume that there are multiple versions of the characters. Yeah realistically speaking (about a video game :?) Cloud could have gotten lucky with that stabbing, however if we look at character stats we see that it is impossible for Cloud to survive an attack by Sephiroth. Now if Cloud had some off Aeris Limit Breaks and he was emotional and aderenalized then it may make sense. This concept applies to all the questions regarding 'status' and 'life/death'.
Ruby weapon doesn't technically gobble them down but he does use quick sand to remove them maybe he was gonna gobble them later?
If thats the case then maybe all of the monsters are choosing to just gobble them down later they just don't try to eat your team while still engaged in battle. Sorry i know it was a joke.
You guys forgot to mention that Zack was pretty much outta it and weakened by the experiments that were being brought onto him.
That is perhaps the most important point about Zack dying.
-
Zack dying from gunfire, Red XIII not using a Soft on Seto, Cloud not using a Phoenix Down on Aerith... I guess you could say that what happens on the field doesn't follow the same rules as what happens in battle.
The laws of battle are different yes, but Phoenix down (Phoenix Tail) does not cure death, it cures Knock Out.
-
You guys forgot to mention that Zack was pretty much outta it and weakened by the experiments that were being brought onto him.
Well then, if we consider Crisis Core, how did he pull his act together in order to defeat Genesis?
One more thing - this time, about the Nibelheim incident.
Cloud remembers it as if he was Zack due to his identity mix-up. Tifa doesn't tell him that his story is all wrong because she knows something's up and she doesn't want to provoke whatever it is that's wrong with Cloud. Later, they work together to figure out what really happened, yada yada. That all makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that Tifa at first claims that Cloud wasn't there at all; that he didn't even witness the whole thing. But after she gets struck down by Sephiroth, Cloud tends to her and she clearly says something to him about the promise they made as children. Why doesn't she remember that? She remembers everything else perfectly well!
-
She had just gotten cut, and possibly lost a lot of blood from that. It may have cause a bit of amnesia for that period of time.
or maybe shes just fuxin nuts.
-
Wait wait wait a minute! When Cloud attended to help her, she was clearly knocked out... Wasn't she? That is how it happened in Crisis Core.
Zack was the one who saw and last spoke to Tifa before she completely knocked out. Then after that, Tifa must've knocked out and of course, Zack and Sephiroth engage in a heated battle. Cloud quickly rushes after recovering from Sephiroth's attacks on Nibelheim. Not too long, Zack eventually loses and takes a beat down from Sephiroth. Cloud then checks up on Tifa quickly, then Zack, and yeah, he sticks it to Sephiroth and blah blah blah.
-
she may also have just believed it to be a hallucination or a dream, sinse near death that stuff can happen (trust me on that one :P). its also viable that the blood loss counted as amnesia as previousely said. my question is, throughout the game, how come they're constantly talking about cloud and zack looking similar when, to me, they look nothing alike at all, in any variation of the games.
-
Spiky hair stereotype.
-
Phoenix Downs cure Knock out, alrite, but shouldn't Life/Life2 cure death? Angel Whispering in her ear maybe? Sure you don't have it at the time, but the Life spells surely are opposite of death. Tifa not remembering Cloud could be due to the blood loss/amnesia, or due to psychological effects. Cloud blocked out a hge portion of his own memory, surely Tifa can block out one event.
-
I think Cloud and Zack do look slightly similar. I don't think the resemblance has been dramatized that much either.
Something new! And also kind of minor.
When President Rufus showed up at Rocket Town to say "GIVE MEH TEH TINY BRONCO! NAO!!", Cloud was right there, listening to the whole thing and being totally overt about it. How did Rufus not notice him there? If he did, then surely he would've ordered his men to detain him.
-

considering how easy it is to beat him and he's using a gun, maybe he's near sighted
-
lol, I don't think there is any explaining that. Only explanation might be that they simply don't care about Cloud and friends now that Cait Sith is permanently with you. Palmer mentions something, but doesn't follow up on it at all. He is more concerned with lard in his tea. So....next mystery, how does Palmer survive to his age having been drinking lad in his tea all the time?

The name is derived from the poor translation. The actual spells are called Rise and Araise. They also cure knock out :P There is no life and life 2.
Life 1 > ライズ > Raizu > Rise
Life 2 > アレイズ > Areizu > Araise

That sucks, even though I was really just playing devil's advocate. So, how does Cloud take the Masamune to the chest, and pwn Seph, but Aeris is insta-killed. Cloud had like 140 Hp, and Aeris could potentially have 9999 Hp. Just replying randomly till an actual solvable mystery comes up again.

Cloud has Jenova cells and is not an ordinary human (Sephiroth is surprised to see Cloud does not die as well). Aerith is an ordinary human (at least in terms of physical fitness) and was stabbed through the chest. It has nothing to do with battle mechanics, it is the story :)

not technically an ordinary human, but a cetra, however theres no evidence in the games to suggest the cetra were hardier people then normal humans, so the logic works itself out

Cloud didn't have Jenova cells yet. I think they each should have died (not really). I know its the story :(

Cloud did have Jenova Cells. He was part of the Jenova project by Hojo. Considered a failed "copy" and not given a tattoo.

Ordinary humans are just Cetra gone fail. Biologically, they're pretty much the same. Pretty much.

we do to, my theory is that, sinse cloud was constantly around people WITH jenova cells, perhaps it acted someone as a duplicating symbiote and small bits transferred to him over time, not enough to make him a soldier (yet), but enough to make him a bit tougher than your average cowgirl MMA-style boxing tifa or your.... flower girl :p

Is that what the other FFVII games said? idk. I didn't think Cloud was part of the Jenova Project until after the Nibelheim incident. He was wounded by Sephs sword then he and Zack got picked up by Shinra, Then Hojo experimented on them, and that is the point at which Cloud became a 'failed clone'.
-

Yes, it is what you learn in the mansion as well as various texts. It is also what Ultimania states.

Looking at it again, you may be right... it may have taken place afterwards. If that's the case... then basically sh*t happens :P Actually yes you are right, he experiments on the towns survivors...
Cloud is obviously one tough son of a bitch or the cutscene is probably overdone and out of context for what is supposed to have happened. Who knows.

FFVII unsolved Mysteries. If you have any information regarding this or other mysteries please contact 1-800-OMGWTFZ
I guess we say te answer is "Cloud survived for dramatic effect dammit!" For a second I almost had to rethink my entire understanding of FFVII lol *so that sh*t Seph said in whirlwind maze was in fact the truth and all else is a lie ?!#?!$?!$?@%?@*
What are some other mysteries...So the Stone Seto was completely petrified save for a few small tears? Or were those tears like...crystals...? And jeez, when you are in Gongaga do Aeris and Tifa BOTH really have to go silent when you speak with Zack's parents? C'mon they could at least be like "Yeah Cloud, we were gonna tell you this, but you're f*cked up in the head, remember a guy named Zack? He was a pretty big part of your life." or "You know Zack too?"
How did Lost Number fit in the Nibelheim safe?

I think it's more along the lines of Tifa & Aeris were just debating on if they should trigger what they knew would be a total breakdown. Kind of like what happened while they were in the lifestream. Like, the mako fucked him up to a point, and he just had a total breakdown, and most of the sickness wasn't due to the mako, but from the breakdown. He just needed tifa to do it. So they knew he'd be like he was in the wheelchair if they pushed it enough. It was inevitable, so they just tried to delay it as long as possible.
That being said, I'm baked, so it may be a little abstract.

As for lost number, he was obviously like some fucked up Genie. 8-)

These are now my official positions on the subjects.

Wait wait wait a minute! When Cloud attended to help her, she was clearly knocked out... Wasn't she? That is how it happened in Crisis Core.
I think this was an inconsistency. In VII Tifa is completely unconscious when Cloud tends to her.
However, in the anime Last Order, Cloud tends to her, she wakes up, says something like "you came just like you promised", and then passes back out.
I was annoyed when that happened, because I didn't see a need for them to insert it. But I just chalked it up to "She probably didn't remember waking up and seeing him, because she was so out of it."
So yeah Seer, I think she just didn't remember waking up and seeing him.
-
About the Cloud's stabbing and Aerith's demise, I personally think that Cloud was not ready to die yet.
Not always does someone die due to the physical hurt. Cloud for example, he was a lil more than your average infantryman. Aerith was not as physically fit (or none at all) than Cloud obviously (we all know from watching her jumping onto the roof of houses and she gets tired within 10 ft. :p
So that being said, IMO, Aerith died because she was ready to die. She had summoned Holy and only she knew this (at the time). When Sephiroth stabbed her, she pretty much said "Mission accomplish.....ed."
As for Cloud, he still had a lot to achieve for, and he also had vengeance on his mind: For Tifa, Zack and the townspeople.
On a side note: notice that Cloud does not say "This is for killing my mother!!" during the flashback. Oh how heartless. :(
-
On a side note: notice that Cloud does not say "This is for killing my mother!!" during the flashback. Oh how heartless. :(
I don't know whether he does or not in the original Japanese version of the game, but...
"Soldier: Mom... Tifa... my town... give it back... I had so much respect for you... I admired you..."
That came from an online game script I just googled. It's from the PSX version of FFVII, from the scene where Cloud (with his helmet on) back-stabbed Sephiroth with the Buster Sword. Looks like he did complain about his mother's murder :P
EDIT: 02:26 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsPhBSDidFM)
-
Hm, yes, I had forgotten about that!
But he doesn't make that much of a big deal about it. His mom should have been the last to be mentioned lol. I guess he wasn't a momma's boy. ;)
-
Well, if you suddenly lose everything you have in a fire, I think you'd be in too much confusion to prioritize them.
-
Maybe Cloud's mom wasn't a good mother? Maybe while Cloud was a little boy she was smoking mako in the bathroom and that's why he is emo and nobody liked him. I think we can prioritize the important things in Cloud's life though (at least to a certain extent). We know that his same-age peers had no respect for him and ridiculed him; we know that the few memories of Tifa paying attention to him were pretty much the only ones; and we know that Cloud "wanted to be just like the great Sephiroth" and not "I want to protect my you and my mom Tifa!" no he was relunctant to make that promise. Frankly, idk why Cloud was upset at the town getting burned down at all. He should have pledged his loyalty to Sephiroth and dove into the Mako Reactor after him. Nobody respected Cloud except for Zack it seems. His mom just wanted him to have"an older girlfriend, one that can take care of you" she was obviously tired of dealing with Cloud and his emo-ness.
-
mako in the bathroom
Me and cloud were doing something in the bathroom but I can't see why thats any of your concern :P
EDIT: Also your constant use of the work "Emo" troubles me...

I'm concerned with the more scandelous issue of what you and Cloud's Mother were doing in the bathroom :o

It bothered me too, I just couldn't think of any synonyms...troubled? disturbed?
-
Cloud isn't an emo (unless you take AC as gospel),
He is a very troubled person who has a personality disorder...
-
I've always thought of him as having something of an inferiority complex. He wants to be strong - he's troubled by his weakness. He's also naturally reclusive, which adds a bit to this character of his.

Well I do have a degree in Psychology and am in grad school with one of my areas of training being psychological assessment. Using the DSM as my guide, Cloud's symptoms primarily point to a dissociative disorder (the category Multiple Personality Disorder is in), but he has some strange symptoms. Symptoms that are characterisitic of schizophrenia and/or antisocial personalty disorder. But those don't fit perfectly either. Since his symptoms are spread out over the entire abnormal psychological spectrum, we need to invent a diagnosis. Ahem, Dissociative Identity Disorder with comorbid symptoms of Catatonic Schizophrenia and unconcious deception of others. I have nothing better to do at the current time apparently.
I don't think Cloud is naturally reclusive. I think he was conditioned to be reclusive cause the other kids didnt like him. He was a loser who wanted to be a big shot but got all f*cked up in the process. Nothing against Cloud, i love the guy.
You're absolutely right, Cloud isn't emo. Any emotional reactions exhibited by Cloud were perfectly warranted.

Alright time to weigh in here. if you were kidnapped (or taken) to one of Hojo's laboratory were he injected you with various forms of drugs and Mako then left out in the street to die, I think you would be a little foggy too ::).

You said i was was gonna get injected with drugs not sharp foreign objects! What a rip-off.
Why is Ying so happy, but all Yang wants to do is commit suicide? (i tried to find a screenshot or something of this, but failed). Alrite, that's not a real question, but I'm certain that all the mysteries of FFVII have not been solved.
So, obtaining no feminine accessories in wallmarket means Tifa gets chosen by the Don. Obtaining many makes Cloud prettier. Ok these both make sense. Why then, does obtaining several, or mid-grade tiaras/perfumes/underwear make Aeris more attractive than Tifa? So what? Cloud get's a Diamond Tiara and says "Oh pretty! Let me put it on!" but gets a Glass Tiara and says "Here Aeris, you could use this."??? Or is this some effort to make the selection appear random? Or is it no big deal and I should forget about it because I don't care that much anyway?
-
Its a mini game used to fill the game ;).
During the break in of shinra, jogging in the gym doesn't sound like a good idea...in fact if the said "I'm am to busy breaking in" or something along those lines, that would have made sense. But instead square opted to add a small exercise scene to add depth to the environment. Guess they just wan't you to really work at earing the affection of the Don.

Has anyone figured out how Cloud learned how to ride a motorcycle, and learn how to pilot a submarine within minutes?
-
Has anyone figured out how Cloud learned how to ride a motorcycle, and learn how to pilot a submarine within minutes?
Well, a motorcycle doesn't take much effort. Especially if it's made by Shinra Inc. (since they're all lazy and pretty much make everything "for dummies")
Also, IIRC, for the submarine, there was a manual in which you are opt to choose whether or not to read it (again, made everything "for dummies"). :P
-
If you didn't kill the captain and crew... I guess they help you :o ;D
-
Maybe it is instinctual? Something due to the mako infusing.
-
Well the controls are X, [ ], O, /\ So only a few of the buttons inside the sub are real. The rest are the guages, alarms, buttons, etc. are just for show.
Why are chocobos invincible?
Why doesn't Cid fly around with the kickass jet highwind to begin with? Or did he say, "I've been wondering what this button does" or something like that, in which case, Why doesn't Cid know what the button does?!
Why is the elemental materia in Mt. Nibel in the mako fountain already processed? Its round and ready to use. If you can just grab chunks of raw mako and use it, why don't you do that all the time?
Why is the same amount of Meteor chunked off when you smash it with a Rocket with no Huge Materia or a Rocket with 4 Huge Materia. And if i keep Cloud and friends in that chamber, i have like 150 powerful materia to add to the destruction. Surely Scarlet's calculations are wrong about how much more powerful Huge Materia is compared to regular materia. What about Bahamut Zero, is that materia equal to Bahamut regular? or Choco/Mog? With Master Materia, Huge Materia, and 200 random others, Meteor should go down. What about Sister Ray? Aim that thing at Meteor, i'm sure you can kill that thing.
Edit: My whole post is underlined...i dont have little {u}s anywhere but by the triangle, wtf?

What is the purpose of a tissue?
Why would Cloud have the option of saying "I've had better dog food."? Could be an insult, or perhaps he has tried dog food. :o
One of my personal favorites (I've asked previously, but I'll put it again for kicks), why do some enemies have enemy skills in which they themselves do not use?

I always figured that the Tissue was a consolation prize. Like, "You paid 10gp and since you didn't win anything, here's this" Or maybe if you lose in the Battle Arena Dio assumes you arer a crybaby and need a tissue.
I think they fed dogfood to Zack and Cloud while they were locked up in nibelheim.
The enemy skills question is a good one. Has anyone examined the AI to see if there are special cirumstances when enemies will cast enemy skills that normally they wouldn't use?
@sl1982 lmao

The tissue is a consolation prize, for the player to cry into because he lost :P As for "better dog food" that was added by english localisation.

Shooter McGavin is the perfect example of the Norse Mythology-lover, or vice-versa.
Each time he says something, it makes him look twice as bad as what his line was intended to be against.
Yeah, that's what I thought so too: Tissue for the tears when you lose lol.

This one is still unanswered. Also, did Aeris really have a reason for going to the Ancient City all alone? And what about your party member and Cait Sith 2??? How did Aeris just walk out from under their noses and what vehicle did she use to get across the ocean?!?! I think these are kind of a big deal.

I think using the white materia required deep meditation, that she wouldn't be able to do, unless she was alone. Aside from that, who's to say there isn't some sort of trade route that we don't know about between bone village/icicle inn, and the rest of the world, that we didn't see. Perhaps she snuck onto another cargo ship. As far as walking out from under their noses. Sneaking out of the inn at night *shrug*

What about the presence of Sephiroth and Jenova in the ancient City? If they aren't emitting some aura that interferes with Summoning Holy, then were they simply hiding? Well Cloud and everyone could have just chilled upstairs till Holy was activated. Wait...thats exactly what happened! So I think that they could have accompanied her the entire time, just stayed out of sight. I guess everyone was right there when Sephy came down and got her though...so I guess the question is why wasn't Cloud able to see Sephiroth coming down for the deathblow?
All your answers are way too rational for me to accept lol.

It was only by the amazing, and extreme powers of the Flying Octopus Ninja that Sephiroth (Jenova), was able to do such a thing. We must fear the FON. FEAR IT!

OT but Drfeelgud, DON'T POST, 1337 posts, you have.

Unfotunately, I think Dr. Feelgud already posted after that :(

Why did Barret stop wearing shirts?
-
Because Mr.T didnt wear shirts?
-
Because Mr.T didnt wear shirts?
^Probably the best answer. Or perhaps Barret never wore shirts to begin with. When he reflects on the past, he wasn't wearing a shirt, granted that was only a few years in the past.
Why was Scarlet chillin on the train tracks when Barret and Dyne were headed back to Corel? Sure she was overseeing the operation, but...on the train tracks with two MPs? I smell a scandal ;)
-
I thought there were 4 MP's? :P

Oh yes he did, he wears a white tanktop under the vest.
-
Oftentimes not, I could see that being the inspiration for it.
-
Barret wore a shirt? Oh Crap. Hmm...maybe the shirt was manufactured by Shinra? lol
Are there anymore good mysteries? Why does Lucrecia live in that strange shrine? Or was she even alive, its been awhile since I watched those scene with Vincent. Was she really there or is she part of the lifestream or something? If it was her physical body, I wonder if she came out of her cave after the Meteor crisis.
How long was Rufus laying in his destroyed office before anyone found him? I people can die when crushed by the Midgar Plate, Shot by Dyne or shot when your Zack, or when pierced by Sephiroth's sword, but not after taking a Diamond Weapon energy blast to the face?
-
^ All that's explained in Cerberus or On the Way to a smile.
Lucrecia sealed herself away in that cave, and the one that we see isn't her real body, only a projection.
Rufus escaped from the Office, he used a path underneath his desk to land in a secret room in the lobby, and the Turks find him.

Rufus died. :-D

FF7 has become a bit like FF4. Half the characters that were killed off were brought back to life.
FF7 examples: Rufus, Tseng, Hojo, Genesis... oh, and Sephiroth.

...
The enemy skills question is a good one. Has anyone examined the AI to see if there are special cirumstances when enemies will cast enemy skills that normally they wouldn't use?
I have examined the E.Skills question and AI to see what's going on. Most of the enemies that HAVE E.Skills can use them. Exceptions are like the beachplugs that don't ordinarily perform Big Guard. There's no immediately apparent answer, but the only one I can come up with is that the developers decided that that was a good time to introduce Big Guard to your repertoire and that seemed like a simple enough enemy to give it to. Plus, you've just gotten manip from Cait Sith and can have up to two E.Skills Materia at this point.
Other explanations:
Attacks given to enemies aren't used because the animations that enemy has don't go with the attack and they were too lazy to make more.
Some attacks enemies have are put on retainer for a more powerful version of the enemy (1000 Needles & Cactuar vs. Cactuer).
By the time you get to enemy X, the attack it has that it doesn't use is too powerful for you to survive or makes the enemy too strong.

It's a wig made of a special type of metal unique to the ffvii universe that is just as tough as adamantium, but can be colored yellow by mixing bananas into the metal when molten.
He's actually bald.
-
Barret wore a shirt? Oh Crap. Hmm...maybe the shirt was manufactured by Shinra? lol
Explain's why Barret is so angry all the time, Shinra obviously didn't grant him a refund on his shirt that was too small!.

I don't remember what it said in relation to that (PSX or PC)
-
In PSX game, it was wrongly translated as Tseng being killed (when you talk to Scarlet in Icicle Lodge). In PC game, it is corrected to him merely being beaten up/injured.

Who is Genesis? ??? Sega Genesis?
-
Genesis is in Crisis Core as the main villain. Used to have rivalry issues with Sephiroth back in SOLDIER.
-
Ha, I never knew FFVII PSX said Tseng was dead, I guess I figured he was alive when he says, "Don't worry about me, I'll be fine."
Why doesn't Cloud give a crap when you stumble upon certain things in the world?
-Gast's and Ilfalna's home an those videos
-The notes/letters/books all over Nibelheim. He has a bit to say to the cloaked figures and actors, but why not when he finds a letter that explains the whole Nibelheim Incident?!

Poor Cloud, always getting the shitty end of the stick. Yet, this poor emotionally disturbed young man with amnesia and no living family is apparently the most powerful individual in all of Gaia. Sephiroth just has a delayed Final Attack=Revive.
-
I've been wondering something. When was it ever mentioned that The Planet was called Gaia? The only time I've ever heard that was on a quiz on the Dirge of Cerbreus website 4 years ago.
The in game files call the Gaea cliffs Gaia1,Gaia2 but that's not very reliable...
It's never said by any of the Characters, so where did it come from?
-
It was never in FF7, it's something that was attributed later. It's mentioned only as The Planet in 7, but it's called Gaia in AC.
-
I thought that the planet being called Gaia was embedded in the FF series. Does Ilfalna maybe say the planet's name? I can't help but think that I knew it was called Gaia long before any post-FFVII references existed, although I can't cite anything specifically...
-
I read somewhere that the gaia cliff was mistranslated into gaeas.
-
I read somewhere that the Gaia cliff was mistranslated into gaeas.
It was, but the planet is always referred to as "The Planet", it did not have a name in the original game. The cliff is named Gaia as far as I am aware.
Gaia Cliff is not the same as "Cliff of Planet Gaia", so it depends how the name is meant:
Gaea's Cliff > ガイアの絶壁 > Gaia Cliff
That seems to be a cliff called Gaia?
As far as I can see, nowhere else in the game is Gaia even mentioned. Then again, Gaia and Terra are used in FF9 as names for planets, and it is at least possible. I will check.
-
Gaea's Cliff > ガイアの絶壁 > Gaia Cliff
Both Gaea and Gaia are perfectly acceptable in English. The latter is more common, but they're both accepted transliterations of Γαία. Where this is the case, it's best to stick with the original, unless you're changing things just for the sake of it.

I don't have an issue with that. I will go with whichever is more commonly rendered, regardless of what was used originally. Which is more commonly used?

It's hard to say. A Google search is useless because Gaia Online skews the results massively. However, as I said, there's no good reason to change an already acceptable translation. Would you change Rune Blade to Rune Sword just because sword is a more common word than blade?
-
if it was called a rune sword, yes :P
But, what are the origins of the word "gaia" why are there different spellings?
-
But, what are the origins of the word "gaia" why are there different spellings?
Greek word for Earth. Also a goddess.
There are two spellings because the Romans transliterated it as Gaea due to the fact that "ae" in Latin makes the same sound as "αι" in Greek. In English, both "ae" and "ai" can make that sound; some people prefer "ai" because it's a more literal transliteration, others prefer "ae" because Latin transliterations are seen as having a better pedigree.
