I dislike trying to put stuff in a top ten list, so, here's just 10 of my favourite and most played games or game series and not any order in sight.

Final Fantasy series up to and including IX (Bit of a given really)
Parasite Eve 2
GoldenEye (The original N64 version)
Perfect Dark
Resident Evil series (The numbered ones and Code Veronica)
Deus Ex (Still the best RPG/FPS hybrid to date)
Minecraft (Indie game, good fun and a great time waster)
Battlefield series (Not much can beat pounding around a map with a couple of mates in a Humvee on a rampage)
Gears of War series (Because chainsaw bayonets are the way forward in close quarters murderation)
Saints Row series (Because GTA lacks the sheer number of extra curricular activities and the humour of throwing someone face first into an oncoming train)

Top 5 hates:

1.  Final Fantasy X-2 (poxy cash in and ruined FFX)
2.  Final Fantasy XIII (This is a game?)
3.  Final Fantasy XII (Dumbed down nonsense)

5.  Zillion (Master System) - Very annoying and pointless game.
6.  Cannon Fodder (Megadrive) - Ditto.

I hated these games.

I have an issue with separating games from a series, for a top 10 list...  Usually, so here's my attempt at a top 10 list, with series' grouped.... usually.

1) Final Fantasy VII

2) Shenmue/Shenmue II  (I WANT SHENMUE III GODDAMNIT)

3) Metal Gear Solid  (The ending of 4, after the credits remains the only moment in a game to make me cry)

4) The Legend Of Zelda

5) Mega Man - Mega Man 10 (FUCK MEGA MAN X!!!)

6) Guitar Hero - Guitar Hero II/Rock Band (I dislike the Activision Guitar Hero games for the most part, and adore Rock Band...  FUCK YEAH HARMONIX)

7) .Hack//INFECTION - .Hack//QUARANTINE (Didn't play the others really, so I have no opinion on them.  I also didn't get to beat QUARANTINE =(  I only own INFECTION, so I had to borrow the others, and my friend's copy of QUARANTINE consistently locked up on Cubia's roots...  On the other hand, .Hack//SIGN is the only anime I've ever enjoyed...besides the original Pokémon series)

8) Super Mario Bros.

9) Postal II

10) Duke Nukem Forever (RESERVED FOR FUTURE USE)

In order I'd say:

1. FFVII
2. Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3. The Illusion of Gaia (Old not very well known Snes game, it's amazing)
4. Metroid Prime (1 and 3, never played 2)
5. Pokemon (1st and 2nd gen, after that it became fairly ridiculous)
6. Elder Scrolls-Oblivion
7. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
8. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
9. White Knight Chronicles
10. Final Fantasy XIII (I don't exactly agree with the straightforwardness of it, but the battle system is nice imo)

1. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (NES)
2. Final Fantasy VII (PSX/PC)
3 & 4. Chrono Trigger (SNES), Metal Gear Solid (PSX) (the order depends on how sentimental I'm feeling)

Below this point, it's hard to put the games into any kind of order

Fate/Stay Night (PC)
Tsukihime (PC)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (PC)
Final Fantasy VIII (PSX)
Final Fantasy X (PS2)
Any one of the later MGS games, depending on my mood (PS2/PS3)

He's probably never played a real zelda game, so he has nothing to compare them to.  If he has played an actual zelda game, it was probably Adventure Of Link

Except Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon both play like shitty versions of AoL. Having played Adventure of Link is all the more reason not to like the CD-i Zelda games.

Ok here are mine, from most favorite to least favorite, but they all are great.

1. Quake 1 (got me into map creation, and the best multiplayer ever - used to play it in middle school with everyone i knew and didn't know)
2. Doom (Doom is a classic that can't be beat, nor replaced)
3. Daggerfall (most complex and largest scale RPG to date. World is procedural but who cares, the damn game is so well done - and besides, oblivion is just as repetitive)
4. HeXen II (Mashup of RPG/FPS hybrid, this game is incredibly difficult but rewarding to play, there are many well created puzzles, and coop support make the game extreme fun)
5. Final Fantasy VII (need i explain this one? ::))
6. Thief TDP (Great stealth game, leagues ahead of most stealth games including MGS)
7. Metal Gear Solid 1 (great game with an amazing storyline and fun gameplay. The well developed characters and twisting plot put this game through the roof)
8. Descent ( first 6 DoF game, along with many games of the time had kick ass gameplay and music [such as this song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZT4mJxv4zU], and multiplayer was a blast - the freedom of movement created a whole new type of deathmatch)
9. Unreal - NOT unreal tournament, the single player FPS that started the series (This game i love like a lot of others, but this game makes it here for Its memorable presentation and design. The graphics were amazing for the time, and the world was truly breathtaking. Unfortunately, you rarely see the types of environments this game had in an FPS anymore. It remains one of the most creative FPS games ever made. Want proof? just look at Nyleve's falls or the Sky town - and the music in this game complemented the environments perfectly - it seems a lot of old games did a better job at this than most newer ones)
10. Crysis (People say graphics aren't everything, and this game is proof of that. Despite being the most stunning looking game ever made, so much pure detail in everything, it still manages to be fun and introduce new gameplay concepts that keep the game from being more than just a pretty face. On top of that, the level editor is the most amazing I've ever seen for a game)

Honorable mentions include:
Half-Life:This was a close one for me, between Crysis and HL, even though HL is from my childhood - i ultimately chose Crysis because of the things that made it last longer for me, such as the open-endedness, and the ability to create amazing things with the editor, where as half-life editing was like Quake 1 (same engine) but i enjoy Q1 editing much more. Also, it didn't make my list because I feel this game somewhat attributed to the death of the truly unique shooter. It was a hallmark in game design, but the design of the game, just made more sense than games before it. Quake and Unreal had more unique environments, but while Unreal made more sense than quake, they were both still unique in their own ways and were more based on fun. And the weaponry in HL, is, well...normal. You see many similar arsenals in other games now.  Even futuristic games don't have unique weapons anymore like Unreal or Quake 1 do.

Duke Nukem 3D: Despite being a major part of my childhood gaming experience (albeit with parental lock on) this ultimately had to miss the list. What it did do right was bring environmental interaction to a new level in games. But it does feel a bit immature playing it now. I still feel its great, but not for my top ten. Not anymore at least. Sorry Duke.

Battlefield 2: This lost out to the classics, but if there was a top 11, this would be in it. This is the best MP tactical game out there, period. Never has a blend of vehicles, infantry, squad tactics, and semi-realistic gunplay been so well implemented. Screw you, Bad Company 2.

Far Cry: Yes, it is better than Crysis, but i still had so much fun with both, I picked Crysis for being more well polished and because i use the editor for Crysis more.

You best be trollin'. The AI in this game is both phenomenally stupid, sometimes being unable to climb a simple flight of stairs, and ridiculously cheap, being able to headshot you from a mile away and behind a bush.

Sure, it's beautiful, but the AI would be embarrassing even by 1998 standards, and that kind of ruins it for me personally.

To be fair Bloodshot, Duke3D was immature to play even when it originally came out.

Which is why it's so good.

Now, I see a fair amount of people say this but a lot are just lying, while others are being honest about that. I am sure you are being honest, but i must say that the AI in Crysis is a gamble kind of, because some people have problems with it that others do not. The AI is good due to it being able to hear sounds and react to them, their flanking abilities and how they use the environment given that much of the outdoor environment has very little predefined points for the AI to use. That being said, each individual AI character has a ton of actions that are processed at once, so its very hardware dependent (which can end up making or breaking the game btw)

For example, i got crysis when i had my older computer which had a single core. The AI were extremely stupid, to the point of making me laugh, like much of the videos you see on youtube of them walking up to flaming explosive barrels and such. However, i have a computer with a core I7 now, and the AI react fairly quickly to what happens to them, and it makes the game much more enjoyable. The flight of stairs thing you mentioned is still a problem because they are designed primarily for outdoor environments, and all indoors require pathing which does not work to well unless the pathing is very precise, and it was not at all implemented how an AI system should be for indoor environments, especially for stairs (sometimes AI will try to go down the stairs at the same time and trip over each other  ;D).

Aside from their problems indoors, the AI is by no means bad. Some of the AI has slower reaction times, but that is partially dependent on the class of AI and the idea that they are meant to work in groups. It's also one of the few AI systems that once your spotted they don't always know where you are. They always check the last location you were visible to them in, before entering a search pattern and searching the area for you and eventually returning to normal. They do have very far view distance, but they cannot see through objects (unless they are specifically made in the editor for the AI to be able to see through) such as leaves and bushes. And for the simple hundreds of vegetative objects that are in the levels that the AI make use of without any pre-scripted events at all, Its a well done sandbox AI.

Plus, i believe the AI is designed to be a scared North Korean  :-D

Crysis AI is heavily scripted to do certain actions, it's not very dynamic and actually quite predictable.

FarCry also had really bad overly scripted AI, if you see an MPC go off and pee off a dock, that's not AI that's triggered by walking past by a script placed in the editor.

I've dabbled in the editors for both games, an enemy with no nearby scripting just runs around aimlessly shooting at you, not seeking cover even if there's loads.

I have used both editors as well, the crysis editor extensively (which is quite similar to the FC editor btw) and while they wont use objects such as walls or barrels unless you give them positions to, the vegetation they use for cover is completely dynamic. All you have to do is set any vegetation to hideable and the AI would automatically make use of it. Remember, i said vegetation, not objects.

And the AI actions are defined by points yes, but all they need is those points, the AI will do things at those points based on what class of Idler they are set as. When you set several points and set their class they will walk around doing random things and talk to each other, rather then other games where those types of things would only happen when you pass a trigger or so, and they might only do something like that once, they will automatically do that regardless of if your there or not. It is scripted but not as much as other games. Sure its nowhere near as dynamic as say oblivion's AI, but for a shooter, It's definitely more so than most.

1)  The Golden Sun series- loved these games all the way to the end, Definitely need to get ahold of part 3.

2) Chrono Trigger- Everything from the story, the amazingly developed characters as well as one of the most pleasurable soundtracks I've ever heard makes this game truly amazing, there's twelve different endings and I've played it twelve times without getting bored.

3)The breath of fire series( especially 2, 3 and 4)- sad thing is, most people my age I talk to have never even heard of this game.

4)The megamanx/zero series- I just really love these for some reason, a lot of people don't for whatever reason, but whatever.

5) Kasumi Rebirth(Hentai game)- I've played this way too much for it not to be here.

6)Fire Emblem- Just the fact that characters can die permanently at any time was enough to get me interested.

7)Postal 2/Apocalypse weekend- My number one venting game, seriously, since I've been playing this shit, I've become a less violent person in real life.

8)Fable the lost chapters(PC)- For some reason I was really touched by the story for this, especially when you had to choose whether or not to kill your sister who had here eyes sliced up.

9) Farcry 2- A seriously big game, some people say it's too big to the point where it's boring, but those people are all Call of duty fans so..yeah.

10)The Godfather, I loved the movie and I loved the game even more(the first one) EA did a pretty good job of incooperating your character into the movie's events.

lol, they did. But the game had some dynamic crap for eating, sleeping and other routines, except it was by far some of the most retarded AI I've seen. I would've preferred they stick to the old way like in morrowind, although it was much improved by fallout.

the "conversations" in oblivion were pretty horrible.
"Hello"

"I saw a mudcrab today down by the water"

"Nasty little creatures, aren't they?"

"goodbye"

no particular order, grouped by series to stuff a bit more ;)

disgaea 2 psp - having that grindfest in portable version is just perfect. fills idle time commuting to work perfectly.
unlosing ranger vs darkdeath evilman - new take on roguelike from disgaea team. also on psp. same advantages as disgaea 2 psp
ff8,ff12 - these two are just two favorite games among ff series.
persona 3,4 - a great rpg games with a social twist
star ocean 1,2,4 (3rd one just doesn't sit too well with me)
fallout series - great post apocalyptic rpg games.
metal gear solid series
valkyrie profile 2
level5 rpgs - dark cloud 2, rogue galaxy, jeanne darc (psp). i'm hoping they did well on ps3 as well.
vagrant story - i seemed to have missed that. gaah!
