Are you running your pc off a network, when I first did that to mine I had to change a lot of things to get stuff to connect.

If you're behind a network, or a router, or anything wierd like that, you probably will have problems connecting to some stuff.

If I get an ADSL router instead of using the downstairs pc, do you think I'd be able to voice chat over msn or will it just scupper the downstairs pc's ability to do that as well?

Could it be the built in Windows XP firewall?

Go to your dial up connection, right click and view the properties. Then chose the "Advanced" tab and uncheck the Internet Connection Firewall box.

Or you can manualy tell the WinXP Firewall what services / protocols etc to allow (ie telnet, ftp, smtp).
