so the question is simple
which game do you feel has the greatest music out there? I know Final Fantasy has some of the most epic music and in my opinion it is the best but I think we all already know that. I am doing this because I love to listen to game music and would love to know what you guys like.
For me it has to either be the music from Mystical Ninja 64 or Guardian's Crusade for the PSX
*edit*
and I can't believe I forgot this one but the music from Star Ocean 3 is probably my all time favorite!

A list:
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario RPG
Kingdom Hearts (whole series)
Desert Bus
Sonic 3&Knuckles
Super Mario Galaxy 2
edit: ALSO, MGS3 doesn't make the list as a whole, but the song SNAKE EATER tops everything from any game.

I liked the music in Valkyria Chronicles, really suited the moments in the game. Sounds incredibly similar to some FFXII music though, which left no impression on me whatsoever. Maybe it's the same composer?
Valkyria Chronicles - Street Fighting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlIrMt6vicw&feature=related)
-
Well mines really aren't in order:
1) Chrono Cross
2) Tekken 4
3) Tekken 5
4) Chrono Trigger
5) Metal gear Solid 1 and 2
6) Guilty Gear
7) Kingdom Hearts 2
8) Final Fantasy X/X-2
And finally Radiata Stories. In my opinion the music fit the game really well, especially during the various comical sequences.

I'm loving the fight music in Pokemon Black/White, the music when fighting Team Plasma is just awesome. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cp3FtEaV7tQ)

Golden Axe music - AMIGA version has the best music:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjOUAIyfm7E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oYhCqP_XxY
Daggerfall had some really nice and atmospheric MIDIs, way better than current elder scrolls music IMO:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx-bimFVkVs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A5yjeIgijw
HeXen II had some great tracks as well, Raven sure did have a good composer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4TderYj4SA < Barbican, my favorite
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gtZBkDdv_E&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDxMpaSD6g8 < remix of Hexen 1 song
Unreal was amazingly atmospheric, the music kicks ass:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6pq393A2iE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YWfb3ti4V8&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvPF43AwcsA < --- skip to 4:07
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCbUxrZiUKk < --- Skip to 3:52 for awesomeness
/\ Unreal's tracks all have action sequences at the end of them. Skip to the ends to hear the coolest parts.
Diablo 1's tracks are the most atmosphere music I have ever heard in a game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo9hXndgs-U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2evIg-aYw8 < Tristram
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12Q-r7zV4EM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0v829LHb4ys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbJcv2w2soY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dpp3bKo8xn0
Out of any non-FF game, I'd have to say Diablo's OST is my absolute favorite. It sets moods so well, and I've never heard a game's music that even comes close to it (aside from FF of course, and Unreal)
Unreal comes in a close second because the music is just so well done. Unreal has great music, but Diablo wins because it's songs are so amazing, and they portray the horror element perfectly, while still being enjoyable to listen to.

Completely disagree on amiga version of goldenaxe, Sounds lame imho compared to >

A complex answer, depending on mood and the game I'm playing at the moment...although, if I were forced at gunpoint to select a few...
(I enjoy surreal, abstract music in addition to more mainstream ones, so depending on your own tastes these may not be particularly enjoyable)
SimCity 4:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCfimZEArAQ&feature=related
Representative of the soundtrack's variety, although it varies from way out there to the kind of music you'd expect any large metropolitan area to produce.
Terranigma:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3mqIDAVObA
Underworld theme, one of the better pieces in the game. Haunting, it goes well with the environment it plays in. The soundtrack is, like SimCity 4's, rather varied, and tend to fit the scene in which they play.
Star Ocean 2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZF080rAvxjc
"Airship" theme, one of the best the soundtrack has to offer. I, personally, don't enjoy the soundtrack as much as others, but it does have its moments.
Musashi: Samurai Legend:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5Wf5rs6TLY
The ONLY good theme of the game. Very...airy. Obviously, as you're literally on a white whale of heaven that's flying through the sky.
Cybernoid 2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UoEqEbxra4
One piece, in fact not even one that plays during the game. Yes, loading music. That's all Cybernoid 2 needs to skin open my heart and take up residence.
Xenogear:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7GzieOOQ8M
If I were to pick a single game that has the largest number of pieces I enjoy, Xenogears would likely get the nod. There are very few - if any - filler themes, which is rather impressive for a 70 hour game.
Touhou:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=195XntreoMc
While I lean towards the remixes more often than not, I find that Necrofantasia cannot be easily remade into something I enjoy.
Ogre Battle:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5DGkIvqFXk
Every piece is excellent. A shame, somewhat, given that the soundtrack has only 20 some odd pieces in it. I would have preferred to link to Santa's Coming, but I could only find the Playstation port's version of the piece. Not the same.
Ys: The Oath in Felghana:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--kb0569o14
Imagine a rock symphony playing while fighting the hardest bosses you can imagine. Then, after barely managing to win the most epic game of Ping Pong ever conceived you realize, as I did, you're playing on Normal. There are 3 difficulties above it.
Donkey Kong Country:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v18pEFQb3EM
Excellent atmosphere stacked with a thick layer of butter milk pancakes. Fear Factory happens to be one of these pancakes, and so much more. Too bad the sequels didn't have scores of equal quality.
Atelier Iris:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDGPri624cU
While, granted, nothing as impressive as J.E.N.O.V.A., the Atelier Iris series has memorable, fitting, down to earth music layered with a little bit of eccentricity.
Breath of Fire I-IV:
1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TdOYgZGbUA
2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zL97UaQkYWE
3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPRVTDFftBk
4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6RKoOqErWE
Yes, a quadruple hit of...hits. The Breath of Fire series is an oft forgotten, but long running series of classic gameplay RPGs. Being Capcom's flagship (Only?) RPG series, the music is of a high, emotive quality that's just plain fun to listen to. Perhaps the soundtracks don't match the epicness many Final Fantasy tracks do, but it would be unfair to suggest their qualities can't be compared.
Lufia II:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45uvU1ta8WE
One of the more underrated RPGs, Lufia II has its selection of good music. Too much filler, though. A pity.
Chrono Trigger:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpWRlU0Cg_Y
I'm certain someone, if they went through the entire list, would be wondering where Chrono Trigger was. Here is it. Perfect game = perfect soundtrack? Perhaps.

Honestly, that version always makes me feel like my ears are falling out, no thanks.
-
To me, the Amiga version sounds lifeless.
-
That's only because it is too sharp as it has been recorded from an emulator. It needs a tweak to bass and treble and it sounds much better.
-
Please keep um coming this is great!

Ys series, especially 1~3(and they are arranged and remixed to death).
