It has been an exciting few weeks in Japan for me.
An earthquake messed up my room and office, convenience stores emptied of all snacks, dark eerie streets, and more.
I started acting as a doctor on a Japanese TV show, and my girlfriend left me.
Only to be replaced (at least temporarily) by a celebrity singer, model, and fashion tycoon named Himeka Shirosaki.
Her singing. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtvmRoAZRBc)

But the highlight is my new job at Square Enix, where I will be the next core game engine programmer.
By coding the engine they use for all of their major products, I will in effect be working on all of their next Final Fantasy games, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, and more.
All of this in just 3 weeks. Tokyo is an exciting place and I will definitely be staying here for life.
I hope to meet many gaming celebrities at Square Enix, and will do my best to put out the highest quality engine for their upcoming games.

This is great. Could you ask them to put on the remake of FF7 on the PS3 by saying they'll make a lot of money? :D
-
Congrats on the opportunity, Spiro. Don't let the higher-ups know about this board though or we might all get slammed with C&D orders. :-X
So you're acting AND coding SE games? That's a lot to do. If it were still April 1st I'd laugh at you for an elaborate April Fools joke. Either way good luck with it all!
-
Thank you.
I want to see what is happening on the Final Fantasy VII front for personal reasons anyway.
Acting is a weekend job, and I don’t have to do it every weekend.
Also at my previous company I could take days off whenever, but that will not be the case at Square Enix, so my acting may suffer.
I am somewhat sure at least some in Square Enix know about this forum, but in any case I will not be talking about it to anyone.

ace! just uhh, don't be upset when people come complaining to you if a S.E. game comes out they don't like, it happens.
still, that's pretty awesome, congratulations.
-
So you just got a celebrity girlfriend and got a job with a very well established video game company? Sounds like the high life (minus the horrible earthquake :/ ). Congrats!
Also, fixed your links for you, there were some unnecessary quotes and an extra http that were killing them.
-
Thank you.
I never consider relationships with celebrities to be permanent. They have too many choices.
But I am glad for whatever time I get to spend with her meanwhile.

Speaking of, if it's not too personal, how does a Caucasian ask a Japanese if she wants to be his girlfriend?

Say "my salary is ¥10,000,000". She's guaranteed to say yes!

I congratulated you elsewhere L.Spiro, but I do it here too! Congrats! 8-)
-
Did you have to sign a nondisclosure agreement when you got the SE job? I want to know company secrets and insider info!

"Would you like to be my girlfriend"?
-
Congratulations on the new job! ;D
-
Thank you.
I will certainly have to sign an NDA probably on my first day on the job.
As for asking a girl to be your girlfriend, you usually don’t say it, it just happens. If you are looking for a Caucasian way to go, you can just say whatever comes naturally to you because they are going to enjoy your foreign ways (it is part of your charm in Japan).

Oh, don't get the wrong idea from me. I'm happily married and plan to stay that way. I was just curious about crossing cultural barriers because it was something that I did consider in my youth. I do have plans to move to Japan with my wife and currently unborn child in the future. However, the question was just something I never found an answer to. Probably because the only Japanese girls I was around in high school weren't going to stay in the country and didn't want to b approached like that. :)
-
I had heard you were married, somewhere.
How did you meet your wife?

You might have read it on my GameFAQ sig. I met her in 10th grade choir actually, though we didn't start dating until the summer before her senior college year.

To live forever?
How do you plan to do that?
Starting your own company is the easiest way to guarantee yourself and your family a visa, but is also the riskiest financially.

I wish, but no. There lots of programs we've considered applying to like her going with JET and me with GET. Problem with that is that those two don't really communicate with each other so they might want to assign us to totally separate areas of the country. We're keeping our options open at least.
-
Haha. I misread 'to live forever' as actually meaning... to live forever. I mean, Japanese technology isn't that advanced.
Yet.
-
A friend of mine came to Japan through JET.
If you (and your wife) can stand teaching English that may be one way to go, but you better hurry: http://www.letsjapan.org/shawn/2010/07/05/will-the-jet-program-get-the-axe.html (That Shawn is not me, by the way.)
You could also take a class and get a student visa. That would give you a bit more control over where you landed so you could synchronize with your wife.

L.Spiro gave me permission to post his performance of The Nightmare's Beginning from FF7.
I like it :)

Thanks for sharing Dan, L.Spiro I have heard hundreds of piano fan arrangements, often times they are less then exciting :( Yours version is very beautiful, and has a lot of feeling, and you should be very proud. Thank You.
-
I didn't know you played the piano! Massive props, not enough people play it in this age of "two guitars, a bass, and drums".
Now I have a sudden urge to learn this song myself.

=( I can (somewhat) drum, and I wanna learn Bass. F you, Covarr

well I know how to play piano, guitar bass, drums/percussion and a bunch of misc instruments but I think it really depends more on how they are played then on how often they are played by the masses.
for example I tend to play either classical or my own pieces on guitar because I find a majority of modern music to be lack luster and un-original
I also have really big hands so I find it to be really great practice to learn Nobuo Uematsu's songs on guitar, such as Ami from FFVIII, although a lot of his work would be impossible on guitar and are only possible for me because I have monsterous hands haha
anyway I just want to say to L. Sprio that this is exceptionally beautiful little performance!
-
Thank you all.
I also wanted to learn bass and drums but my motivation was really with piano. I only wish I had started sooner.
Here are a few more I hope everyone can enjoy.
Moonlight Sonata Adagio Sostenuto (1st Movement) (http://memoryhacking.com/My%20Music/Moonlight%20Sonata%20Adagio%20Sostenuto%20(1st%20Movement).mp3)
Waltz (http://memoryhacking.com/My%20Music/Waltz.mp3)
Rei Ayanami’s Theme (http://memoryhacking.com/My%20Music/Rei%20Ayanami's%20Theme.mp3)
Related to Square Enix:
Aeris’s Theme (http://memoryhacking.com/My%20Music/Aeris%92s%A0Theme.mp3)
Zeal Island (http://memoryhacking.com/My%20Music/Zeal%20Island.mp3)
I wasn’t trying to be too original with these. My goal was to make them how they might have sounded if the composer was not limited by the MIDI playback of each respective system. Of course he would have done much better than this too…
I am hoping at some point to be able to meet Nobuo Uematsu at Square Enix. It would be amazing to meet the man himself if he ever goes back for a meeting or contract work etc.

Actually one my destination of choice to go after i finish university is japan.
Kinda love everything about it, tho the language might be an huge problem.
-
If you intend to live here then yes you will need some Japanese (visiting is another matter).
But you should already know how to solve that problem. I studied in Thailand for 2 years before coming to Japan.
An alternative method is to join a company in your country that has offices in Japan, and then try to get transferred. In that case you could probably still work in your native language, but I would certainly recommend learning Japanese.
