Title: "An Error Has Occurred!" (About Half the Time)
Post by: The Seer of Shadows on 2011-04-12 13:29:27
I'm having a problem.  Whenever I change web pages while navigating around the forums, I have roughly a 50% chance of bumping into this:

It's kind of annoying.  Why has this started happening all of a sudden?  I'm just using Safari on my laptop with wireless connection to a local network - the same as I've been doing for the past year and a half :-\ Has something been changed recently?

I've found the problem.

There is a new proxy filter which may be messing things up. Are you behind a proxy?

Nope, no proxies here.  Not that I know of, at least...

And I seriously don't get what people have against Safari.  (Oh, and I also get the error if I use Google Chrome.)

I gotta say I've never gotten this error, cept' when I am on my iphone. I love safari, but I do think its the error is tied to that browser :P

But, but, but… I still got the error while using Google Chrome… :(

Also, the error doesn't seem to be happening to me now.  Or at least, it hasn't happened over the past five minutes that I've been on here (and I'm still using Safari).  Has something been done, or is this random?

EDIT: As an afterthought, if there is a proxy filter that filters me out for some reason, how come it didn't block me completely?

I modified the filter a bit, so instead of blocking access to the forums entirely it just blocks logging in. But it is still odd, do you have NAT enabled on your router?

Who is your ISP?

Some ISPs (like AOL) effectively connect you through a VPN. If one of that network's exit nodes is blacklisted, you might be rejected from Qhimm, depending on how your ISP handles load balancing.

Actually, would NAT have to be enabled for Time Machine to work?

It just occurred to me that I have Time Machine running on my home computer.  Apparently, that requires some kind of proxy to work (don't look at me, I never knew this, it wasn't even my idea to install it :().  Come to think of it, I never got the problem when I wasn't at home, so I guess that must be it then.

@Bosola: I remember trying to get onto the forums with an AOL connection a long time ago.  Don't ask me why - the context is complicated.  But yeah, the forums completely rejected me (100% of the time), only with a different message, telling me that AOL is a no-no.  (So I connected to my neighbor's wireless network and used that instead 8))

See if you can disable the proxy you have and try accessing the forums again. I have reverted the setting back to what it was before and would prefer to have it this way if possible.

Ahh! Thanks Bosola this might explain my issue. I know some of the places I wander off too uses a VPN connection. My phone is set up to auto connect to these networks. :)

Why should it block logon? I got the same error at school when I tried to login. What the heck happened?

That seems like something done at registration, not login or view.

In that case, has guest posting been removed?

I have changed it, but I may have to reinstate it if people start showing up again on proxy.

If the proxy filter is really necessary, then I can deal with it, but it means that I need to refresh every time I change webpages here.

Meh.  I guess I need some incentive to come here a little less...

I will show up on proxy at school just to see posts or even post replies. Isn't it possible to allow this to member that ask for it? Like me or The Seer of Shadows, for example...

I have already set it so the only time you cannot be behind a proxy is if you register an account, so you should be fine.

Stop connecting from school and get back to your homework, sonny!

Dang kids.

Lol. I do my homework in the bus (and have more than enough time to do so...) so I don't bother doing these in the school. I'm still young, too :P

What fun is that?  I used to surf around my school's network and leak all the inter-office e-mails that used to float around.  Of course, I was also sysadmin for several teachers, and I also socialed a lot of passwords from other teachers, so I would always get the e-mails from a different teacher's account.  Never got caught, and am no longer that juvenile
