Title: This is an awfully strange... accessory?
Post by: tylerkschrute on 2011-11-13 11:29:03
Take a look at this: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/9/itemhy.png/ (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/9/itemhy.png/)

It seems to have a different label every time I go into the menu. Oftentimes it's called "    h h  ". Otherwise, it's just a random string of symbols. Although it has the accessory icon, it seems to function like a usable item since it's highlighted in the menu and when I sort by field it is brought to the position shown in the image. I believe I received it from a boss but I can't remember which one.

Any ideas on this very strange item?

Hopefully this isn't Menu Overhaul issue.

Please try on clean exe and see if the problem persists.

Yep, still there from a clean exe. However, the description on the clean exe is no longer "nature" but a very long line of completely random symbols.

Also, I can no longer open this file in black chocobo. Pretty sure it has something to do with this item.

Open up your kernel in wallmarket and check the item.

It is an issue with either the kernel bin or flevel lgp. Maybe it has something to do with retranslation.

Already tried finding it in wallmarket but to no avail. Nothing like it in there.

Any way I can get rid of it? Like I said blackchocobo crashes when I try to open the save file and that's the only way I know how to edit items.

If you do a auto sort items what is before/after it? It looks like it replaced something. It's likely a bad indexed item.

Which would be my fault...  try auto sorting with fresh exe and see if it is still there.

I had this same issue when I used a save game created with the Remix Remastered Kernels with Menu Overhaul.
Even after restoring clean kernels, loading the save game with the Menu Overhaul installed resulted in the bug.
When I examined the Guard Materia, it was maxed out with stars all across the screen.

EDIT:
I used a clean 1.02 ff7.exe and vanilla kernel.bin, kernel2.bin and scene.bin files when I reinstalled Menu Overhaul.
It's something that happens to the save game.
It happened to me after the 2nd disk.  Everything was fine until disk 2.
I downloaded a save game from disk 2 created with a vanilla game, and it works perfectly with Menu Overhaul.
The damaged save works fine without the Menu Overhaul.  Installing Menu Overhaul exposes the issue.

I read in a thread that there was some issue when terminating materia with 00 instead of FF (or maybe vise a versa) that resulted in the Guard materia problem.
I haven't found the thread again.  But I'd guess that a missing terminator is allowing the game to read parts of the Menu Overhaul code.
At one point a distorted items menu would open over the materia slots when I attempted to insert a materia into a weapon.
But, I really know nothing about how it all works.
I do know how to prevent it from happening again!
I now avoid using Menu Overhaul with other kernel mods and I've never had the problem reoccur.

Hmmm this is puzzling...  the menu overhaul should work perfectly....  is it possible remix alters a piece of code in exe?

Can we just lock the remix?  It is a problem not a cure.

Someone go into this more for me, and find out what is going on here....

In the image I posted items are sorted by "field" (except of course for the greens... I put those at the top since I was catching chocobos).

If sorted by type, it appears at the very end of my item list underneath the "hypnocrown" accessory.

Once again, is there a more crude way of editing your item stock than black chocobo? I'd really like to be able to open this save file but I'm pretty sure this bugged item is crashing it.

You probably have a dummy item. <I had forgotten about this. Sephiroth and Young Cloud can actually equip some of these without any codes turned on. Neat huh ;)> I messed around with the debugger and found some of these YEARS back. Here's a video. Some items affect HP, drain your hp in the field, and all sorts of wierd sh*t.

Edit: Some of these do crash your game if you have it in stock, equipped, or go into battle with them. I use savestates so I wouldn't know about save files. Sorry!

Oh man. I feel really stupid. If I want to get rid of it why not just sell the damn thing?

Turns out it's quite valuable. Netted me over 2.1 billion gil. xD
