Title: Ok first off im new, Im having problems with FF8 PC
Post by: Eddy on 2002-05-05 03:58:04
Well, starting off, im new to this forum, and i think im gonna like it. FF7 and FF8 are the best games made in my opinion, followed by grim fandango.  FF9 and X are dissapointments.

Seeing how there is a final fantasy 7 remake project going on right now, i wanna find out more, can anyone point me to the starting place? I also have found out the link for the remake doesnt work! :-(

I would like to help but i would like to know what im getting into first. I love this game, and ff7 is the shit!

I downloaded the Chocobo races patch and everything is fine, ff7 is running withuot any glitches, a true dream! FSAA is the shit! any way i can upp the resolution to 1024x768 instead of the ol' 640x480?

Now this is the real problem, i have ff8 for pc,. and the 1.02 patch installed. 4XFSAA installed, and the latest 28.32 WHQL certified nvidia geforce 2 mx 400 drivers. I have a amd 1.1 ghz with windows xp pro, all updates installed, everything up to date, Sound blaster live, now the game starts, i get as far as the menu, i put start new game and the screen goes black! and doesnt move from there! i have to restart the pc if i wanna use it again.

And this being completely off topic, what is all this soundfont stuff? im guessing they are music with better sound to replace the old ones, is that it? or can someone explain it to me?

Thanks in advance people  :D

Hi there Eddy and welcome to the board.

I guess soundfonts can be defined as technology that will allow you to alter instrumental sounds for your MIDI playback. Hence you can improve the sound quality. I don't know much about them so that definition might not be very accurate.

If you want in on the FF7 remake project you have to prove that you have some expertese like in graphics or music making or storyboard writting and then if they need / want you they'l let you in.

As for your FF8 problem have you tried just re-installing the game? Does the graphics card pass all of the requirements in the config? Could be down to Windows XP (try compatability mode).

Why do you say that FF7 is:

the sh!t

if you like it so much?

Hey Eddy.

The MIDI music FF plays is simply a set of instructions telling the computer which instrument in a soundfont to use and how to use it. If you change the soundfont, you'll get different sounding instruments, so a soundfont is basically a file with a load of virtual instruments in it. Though if you change your soundfont the FF songs themselves will still sound the same.

As for you remake question, if you are good at programming, graphics or have any other talents you think could be used in the remake email The SaiNt.

The FF8 problem:

I think a lot of people have been having problems with the graphics in FF8 with a GeForce2 and Windows XP.

One solution I can remember is to use the drivers that come with XP - roll back the driver and see if that helps any?

Well, hey, I liked FF9 better than FF8.  Not that FF8 isn't good, I just think it's not one of the best.

Sound fonts: Check out the thread "Useful Links" in the Game Tweaking forum.

You can apply them through the Creative Soundfont Manager (I think that's what it's called), only if you have a SoundBlater Live! or Audigy.  There are other cards that can handle soundfonts, but if they're not Creative, they'll have different software.

The quote "it is the sh*t" means that the thing in question is "the bomb" or "awesome" or "the cat's yak" or "the poo" or if you're really old "the greatest thing since bread (or breadbaskets)"

I like FFVII and FFVIII they rank in my top 3 FF's (2nd and 3rd respectivly) and FFIX I can't say too much about, and FFX just stinks!

Welcome to the board Eddy. First of all, the offical address for the remake is http://remake.alhexx.com. If that doesn't work, try this (http://hal2k.no-ip.com:9880/ficedula/ffr/) instead.

As I said about FF7 when FF8 came out:

Quote
FF7 would be almost perfect if it had FF8 quality graphics!

Change that to FF10 quality graphics (character graphics at least) and that would still hold true today. Of course, besides a graphics update, we'd want native 2k/XP support & support for modern video cards too. Then it'd be near-perfect.

I'm a new member. I like this board. But one thing puzzles me.
What do all you people have against FF8? It is my favorite of them all. FF9 just sucks.

jarh7: As a rule, we don't bring up dead topics. (Anything over a month old.)

As for your answer, it's mainly a personal opinon. It's good that you love 8. I like it, but not nearly as much as 7 or 10. But this is an opinon. Personally, I thought that 8's story was just a bit too straightforward, and basic. The same's true with 9. There's no room to move about and check out everything. The characters are all like "We HAVE to go here!" with such importancy, that you (the player) feel obliged to continue with the story and not even see the side-quests and other fun things about the game.

I didn't get that feeling from 7.
