Ive used avg for the past year. They have a free version so it doesnt run out and u Dont have to buy it. Ive had better experiences with it than norton and mcafee. Idk how it compares in resources but it doesnt harass you. It does its job well enough

I always trust Kaspersky Pure but it's not free... just google it and you can get a free trial from the official website.

I recommend Microsoft security essentials which is free, for paid i would go for Kaspersky internet security 2013. You should also have Super anti spyware and Malwarebytes too as a backup these 2 free programs rock!

My favorite is Avast. I've been using it for years. It's free and only needs to be re-registered once per year using your e-mail address.

Nod32.  But isn't free.  AVG is best free one I can think of.
I also use MalwareBytes for spyware and what not, which is free.

jeff345 is a spambot and has been banned, but I'm gonna go ahead and leave this thread open since it is a decent topic of discussion.

Personally I use Microsoft Security Essentials, it seems to have the best catch rate among free software. I used to prefer AVG, but in recent years it has become near unusable, with its high levels of bloat and bundled spamware.

Best paid antivirus is probably Nod32. I haven't used it personally because I don't wanna pay for A/V software, but it always seems to lead the pack in lab tests.

Sophos is also pretty good. They have a free version for Mac home users, as well as a free product for Android and a rather interesting and informative blog (http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/).

COMODO fo lyfe yo, free but has a premium version. AVG always annoyed the hell out of me by trying to block Steam every time they updated.

I use MSE. AVG is too bloated for me, while MSE is much cleaner, easier to use, and stays out of my way more. I briefly ran AVG and MSE at the same time (bad idea) and MSE was faster at catching.

Since MSE isn't also a Firewall, and Windows's Firewall has never worked well for me, I use the free Comodo Firewall.

You should check out tinywall, a program that further enhances the Windows firewall and with mse it's pretty good

I have Kaspersky 2012(I replaced your affiliate link with a regular one. Nice try, though. ~Covarr (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MR2IDK)) because the guys down at the computer shop recommended it for me. They say it has cloud protection so they have tons more definitions than other antivirus softwares which means they can stop more viruses.

I actually thought that antivirus was real for a minute lol, that looks really legit though!

I've been using Unthreat Antvirus and it gets the job done. I haven't had a virus since I downloaded it and it's free. The thing I like best about Unthreat is that it doesn't slow down my computer when a scan is running as I remember happening with other antiviruses.

I'd like to side with Covarr and say MSE is pretty bitchin' although nod32 may be better if you're willing to pay.  DragonNinja is also correct in that Comodo is pretty awesome, although be aware that it's nothing more than a firewall, so it's not 100% effective (although what security scheme is?).

That being said, I use CommonSense 2013 along with a *nix OS (OS X, to be specific)

MSE is very good as a free antivirus. Nod32 is probably the best if you want to pay. I use CommonSense 2013 everytime.

I had read AVG somewhere... uck, that thing is (was?) a virus itself. One of their updates got cracked (this was some time ago though) and I never used it again after that.

Both Avast and AVG used to be very good.  Unfortunately, in the last 2 or 3 years, they've both gotten horribly bloated, to the point where they're nigh unusable.  I pretty much equate them to Norton and Symantec these days.

What if I quote IT experts that say the Antivirus industry are like medieval wonder medicine sellers?
