In the first 10 seconds of this song, I know what I hear.
This song is by Pete Townshend: "Let My Love Open The Door"

I was in CVS the other day and this song started to play. It instantly caught my attention, I almost dropped what I had in my hands. My initial thought was "Good grief, someone remade THAT! Of all things."
But no, the song is from 1980, which surprised me that it preceded the series by 7 years. But I'm only referring to the first 10 seconds of it.

Yes. It sounds like it. Blame Nobuo :o

Nah Nobuo didn't steal it, it's just one of those coincidences. Nobuo created the theme in a very short time on piano and wasn't basing it on anything directly. I would wager that the style of play Nobuo used for the prelude is known to many, like when you get blues/jazz etc sounding similar.
In this case the tune itself is distinctly different, it's just familiar enough that it is uncanny. Like this one I found, which sounds like The Oath of FF8 (and who knows maybe he did pinch this little extract haha, but again it's doubtful)>

Sometimes though, Nobuo does mimic styles and that's allowed, for example Dance with the Balamb-fish and Waltz for the Moon
An example of a real rip off is part of NES game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

Well, Nobuo Uematsu is a musical genius, so I would go with coincidence myself.
The TMNT reference made me laugh. I never knew about that one. But I do know of one remake from video games to production, which I can't say........ Well, I really shouldn't say anything about it:

Directly rips from this:

Given the prelude is pretty much a fancy arpeggio exercise, it's hard to call it copied :P While later versions were more elaborate the core of the song is very close to a standard musical excercise.

We used to play preludes like that a lot of times while I was practicing the piano. Preludes are simple sequences along the octave that pretty much sound alike but it's interesting that you caught that in this particular song! Nice ears! :)

Similar style, totally different chords. That chord progression is what gives prelude its unique feel.

Reminds me of when I realized the battle theme from FF7 sounded like this song:

On a related note, there's always the music in Mother/Earthbound being a little bit too similar to various tunes, primarily the Beatles.

What about this one:

and the Beatles

I wish money was heaven sent...

I was joking, I know Nobuo didn't steal anything.
Speaking of FF songs, I got a CD for Christmas, Game Music, by a well-known violonist and a group of other musicians. One of the songs mixes many Final Fantasy songs (namely the Prelude, FF7's Main Theme, the Place I'll return to someday, FF8's Chocobo Theme, One-Winged Angel, Aerith's Theme and a few others). Gotta start a new topic for that.

@DLPB Are you "Neo" now? ;)
