I'm feeling a little bored thanks to too much studying...
So, I have to take a break and think of something else.
What's the largest d/l you've ever made?
-
Um, I think my biggest was an update for Quake 2. It was nearly 30 MB I think, and I have a 33.6K connection. I've downloaded other large stuff too like FF fan movies and stuff.
-
The Badurs Gate 2 Demo. It was 650 megs split into a load of 100 meg sections. But the biggest ever single download was 263 megs. It is an Asf file of the show "Microsfot extreme". It showed a lot of Windows XP and Office XP(Windows XP achally looks brilliant!) and then at the end some of the X-Box in action :)
-
I think it doesn't really matter how big the file(s) was/were, I think more important is which connection you have. I've got one of this laming 56K connections, so I can't allow me to download 650 MB files (oh my god, hours of downloading)
As for the question: I think my biggest download was about 50 megs...it was an app, but I can't remember which...

The Pamela Andersen and Tommy Lee video! It was worth it, though! :o
Just kidding!
EDIT:
Seriously, though, I have a cable modem, so I hardly look at size anymore. With my old 56k, I think it would have to be the King's Quest: Mask of Eternity demo, about 100-200 megabytes. My cousins were coming over that day, and I remember my mom was getting really PO'ed.

Biggest thing I've downloaded, Killer Instinct 2 Arcade Hard drive, it was big(over 100MB), but that was over DSL, so it didn't take too long.
Biggest download back when I was on 56k(over AOL of all things), was the Quake3 demo(50meg). Hours.
-
biggest file probably about 50Mb.. it was a bunch of utilities a friend upped for me.. (dialup) 56k.. other than that .. um i am still on 56k.. cable soon.. Jesus man 11Mb/s!? thats unreal... oh and that game kikz ass :).. (UT is better)
-
Well.... 4 me it would be a 19.9 MB download....
-
Working for an ISP, I can D/L 640MB in about 45 seconds. The largest thing I've D/Led modem-wise was a naughty live action video done by Yuko Miyamura (The voice of Asuka in Evangelion) before she was a voice actor. I think that weighs in at about 200 Meg.
-
in my old 33k modem days it was BeOS5 at 33mb and zelda64 at about 40mb, also Euro2000 demo at 44mb.
with my 112kps its stuff like 70-80mb, like transformers episodes (DivX70mb), soundfonts (fluid 80mb), Roms (GmotW neo geo ,50mb,)
but thats about it, if i ever see something BIG and with clean access, then yea if its good ill go for it.

Last week I downloaded all four ISO's of Redhat Linux 7.1. Totals about 2GB. 2Mb/s Cable is great =)
I remember when I downloaded Mandrake 7.0 ISO over 28.8 tho. Took a Really long time.
-
I downloaded Pearl Harbour a few weeks ago which was good 600 meg... but I used Get Right to resume my downloads.... does that count?
-
Well if it doesnt I'm otry Download Accelerator. It actually works! I thought it would just be another download program but it makes my d/l go at 3.1 kb/s most of the time, and sometime up to 5 kb/s on my 33.6K. It's definately worth it.

Eh, back when I was on dialup, I was pretty crazy and downloaded a linux iso or two every once in a while. Got 7 in total. I like, never really used them though :)
-
599.33MB on a 56k (the AO beta)
-
Whooa....... You guys must have no life! Heheh.. My biggest was Megaman X4 on a 56k modem. It was chunked into 19 files.
-
Oh crap. they were 2.4 megs apiece.
-
Oracle 9i : 2 gigabytes.
----------
Just messin:
FF7 Demo c.70MB's on 56kbps
-
0_0 How could you even stomach saying that?!?! that would take me a few months.
-
It would be interesting to do this topic in 10 years time and compare them..... it will probably be somet like.... "oh yeah i downloaded 42 gig the other night"!!!!!
-
...And in a hundred years:
"I Downloaded the Whole internet. But with my slow connenction it took a whole five hours!"
-
Heh heh heh..... I wonder if all we would see will be pages that are 84meg in size or something so it takes equaly long to download them!!!
-
well i donw loaded the full version of diablo 2 from a small hacker group in the uk
damm that took awhile on a 28.8 connection
-
I remember ages ago I read a massive article in the Times about a new internet type thing called the Grid or something, its supposed to be much larger than the internet. I havent heard of it since though.
-
How can anything be bigger than the internet?
-
The biggest for me was about 64MB, it took 4 hours and that’s over a cable connection.
-
JESUS man Diablo II on a 28.8? the Install of that game is over a gig if you use the full which you would have to.. How big was your hard drive? when i had my 14.4 it was about 2 gigz you musta had your Hard Drive Full as hell after that.. unless you just had a crapppy modem.. um i am not good with math but over a 28.8 probably pulling well get decent here .. actually lets say 6k down that shoulda probably taken you hella.. and we all know you dont get that on a 56k modem.. sometimes you do.. but like rarely.. it musta taken you days.. LoL
-
The theoretical maximum of a 56K modem is 6Kb/s downstream so since 28 is half 56 the maximum should be somewhere around 3Kb/s. That would have taken ages!
-
I get an average of 7.5 with my 56kbs Modem :)
-
Since modem speeds are quoted in kilobits not kilobytes, divide by 8 to get byte speed. So 56K = 7KB/sec maximum. Then you never get a perfect connection, so 6KB/sec is the best you can expect.
On text/HTML especially, though, protocol compression will up that quite a bit. I often get 8KB/sec on pure HTML files. It won't help you on ZIP's, of course, since they're already compressed.
-
I would like to know how to get an average above the maximum speed of my modem, tell me mark, anythink I can do to get this faster is worth it.
-
Uh.... I haven't done anything to my Modem it just goes at 7.5 as if normal. Hmmm, maybe because it is I live practicaly next to the ISP but I doubt it.
-
You'll probably laugh at me but I downloaded all 4 FF9 CDs on 56K modem at average speed 5.5. That was more than 2.5Gig. I needed about 38 hours per each, but the hell, nights are long. Usually I download 600 - 700 Megs per week - usualy divx videos (still using 56K modem)
-
If it's just compression that's speeding up your modem (and I don't think there's any other way you can get > 7KB/sec on a 56K modem) then it's usually active automatically if your modem/drivers support it. It can be turned on or off from the modem properties control panel, though, so you could check that.
-
I have had mine lie to me.. it once said i connected to this ISP at like 115000 and i wuz like whatever.. i think sometimes thy like to lie to you.. (it always said that on this isp) and believe me it wasnt that speed...
