Title: Final Fantasy VII Summon name?
Post by: Thisguyaresick2 on 2013-11-30 12:31:50
Hi, guys. I'd like to give FF7 summons a unique name, since they were never given a name. They're simply called "summons". Originally, in the Japanese version, they're called Shoukanjuu (召喚獣), just like in FFX (and FFIV IIRC). Shoukanjuu literally means "Summoned Beast". I like this term, the problem is that it takes too much space. In other FFs, the summons were always given a cool name, like Esper, Eidolon, Aeon... Could anyone suggest me a good name? Personally I prefer one-word terms.

Just some I've come up with by looking at mythology:

Arions (Arion is the immortal horse of Adrastus in greek mythology)

Ladons (Ladon is a serpent-like dragon in greek myth)

Varsel is a spirit predecessor, from Scandinavian folklore

and from Latin

Pecus (beast)
Fortis (Strong)
Voco (to call; summon)

And so on.

I like Arions myself.

I have called them in my German overhaul Bestia and the double summon to Ritual. I guess  it was IX which use this.
These names are short enough and, more important, the player can imagine what the meaning is.

Is that the name you chose for your FF7 translation? I was thinking of... maybe something like Ctulhu?

Pokémon
Digimon :P

No, since the translation project has to be faithful to the Japanese, it remains "Summon".  Those were just some suggestions for you.

I'm still thinking of a good name for them. I'll try to complete the kernel using "Summoned Beast", and if it's not possible, I'll change their name to "Bestia". It's Latin, just like Materia ("matter", in English).

Bestia isn't a bad alternative.

I've been thinking... how about Deva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deva_%28Hinduism%29)? I wonder if people will like it?

Jinn.

 :P

Btw:
junūn = 'madness' <-- Does this have a relation to Junon?

No, Junon comes from Juno

Nah, not Jinn. Jinn or Djinn might work well for fire beings such as Ifrit or Phoenix, but it wouldn't work well for Shiva or Leviathan. I think Deva is better, although it's hindu-inspired. For me, what matters is its meaning ("deity"). And remember that there are gods among the summons (Odin, Hades). I could also choose the Latin word "Divus"(=god).

Honestly both Deva and Divus  are to close to Diva, which reminds me to the Snickers commercial. And if you use this, then Sephiroth ultimate wish would change to become a Diva.
Hmm... maybe he is only damn hungry all the time. They surely haven't give him something to eat in the Shinra mansion.

I knew you would say something like that. xD And it's not my fault that Sephiroth's ultimate goal is to become a goddess. :P :P

... How about Avatar (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Avatar)? Please don't mention that movie (or that cartoon).

I like your avatar!  ::)

I think this might work.
FFX has thought the whole summoning theme further and explains how these creatures accrued. So if we interpolate it to FFVII, the summons are some kind of manifestations of the will of the Cetra. If I remember right then there is cut content in the Temple scene. In these content Sephiroth is telling you how the summons accrued, which is pretty similar to FFX.

I think it'd be wiser to make a poll somewhere. I'm worried about how people would react.

You shouldn't worry about that.  No matter what you do some people will find time to whine.    ;D

Yeah, you're right. :)
I like Deva better, I've always had this obsession with divine beings.

I found more about it
