Title: Steam 2nd computer Registry key problems
Post by: Scrat on 2014-04-28 19:24:04
Heya guys Im a big fan of final fantasy particularly 7!

Im running 8.1 and steam on my laptop I have tried installing the game for a second time and it works fine unmodded, I too am against piracy :)

MY first problem is with the ff7 config and the converter. IT denies access to a lot of the converter functions and gives error message unable to locate registry key. Please re install Final fantasy VII. So I control panelled, uninstalled, deleted the folder and used the registry deletion tool listed in the guide and it found a key and removed it so i was like yay! but no, same message appears on reinstall.

Im wondering if steam will be logging the registry key on the 2nd computer in some strange place?

Already have this installed on my pc and you guys are doing a brilliant job, providing what square refuses to (although I must admit from the official statement it will be quite interesting if square do remake it as they have said it will take the resources of two new games and will be the directors life work.......... salivate)

Appreciate any help you guys can offer

Did you use my Game Converter before bootleg?

yes on both installs, it gives the registry key not found error and in the dos box says error access denied a lot. trying to run FF7config afterwards as the dosbox commands also produces registry key error.

LIke I say I got it working fine on my first pc and I am wondering whether steam maybe keeps the registry key for the second computer in the cloud or something? I don't really know a lot about computers tbh.

I appreciate any help

Usually the keys are for the Steam version here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Steam App 39140

It would be interested to know where the keys are with you.

However, the scanning of the key is not absolutely necessary.
You can also manually enter the path to FF7.

Far more worrying is me the 'Access Denied' messages.
Apparently the writing of necessary key is blocked at your laptop.
Maybe you have installed a security program that blocks access?

Well I have norton 360 gold... which is a bugger to turn off and I thought I had, I will look up a comprehensive guide on disabling norton and once i have tried that I will message again.

Ill check that file location as well

ok so i switched off norton altogether and tried again, no luck.

I then tried finding the registry key at the location you specified, couldnt find it, tried searching for HKEY_local_machine no results, tried searching for steam app 39140, no results. Searched steam and though there were results none of the resembled any of the folders you specified in that path :P

What the converter says when I run it:

Seems as if GC has yet found the path.
However, the 'Access Denied' messages are very puzzling to me.
I can not explain these messages...

Can you turn on UAC (default, the PC then reboot) and GC start with UAC turned on?

It seems as if I can not solve this problem  :(
For some reason GC is not running with admin rights, although is already taking place protection at start of GC.

Bootleg itself contains the only alternative to the GC, Kranmers new to old patch (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=13429.msg187231#msg187231).
But even these programs need admin rights ...

well that last comment compelled me to remove your mod and re download it, I rechecked the admin rights box and hey presto it worked this time.

Not sure if its an 8.1 thing or a norton thing, but I checked that the admin box was ticked before i removed it and it was deffo ticked...

if you see this crop up again for someone else i literally removed your mod, wiped it from recycle bin etc, cleared registry using registry tool, redownloaded re checked admin and this time it worked.

Wheher that makes sense or not I leave up to you! xD

Thanks for the info!
Obviously there is a problem with the granting of admin rights. :(
