Title: Final Fantasy VIII resoultion steam version.
Post by: Erik on 2014-08-05 10:55:57
I was just wondering what kind of res people use when they play? At first I thought well I use 2048 x 1152 on my desktop. Might as well use it in game. Sadly the game screen was like a box with big black edges.

I tested and now I think 1152 x 864 is best, it leaves small black edges at the top and bottom though. This may also be a rookie question but does the resolution affect graphics wise? In that, the lesser res - > worse graphics, or have got it the wrong way here?

There's a lot of wise people here, surely someone will give you a detailed technical answer. I just can say that "bigger res" is not the same as "better res" when it comes to FF8 (and much other games) When you chose a big resolution such as 2048 x 1152 the game will stretch the textures (because the textures aren't high res). So is much better to choose a reasonably lower resolution.

I also recommend you to take a look at Omzy's Tonberry and Project Eden:

And Mcindus' Project SeeD Reborn and Tripod:

That mods will improve A LOT your graphical appearance.

Hope it helps

As far as I can tell the game is internal limited to 1280 x 720. If your graphic card driver can use some kind of FXAA you should go with that resolution.

Thank you for a quick reply. I didn't really noticed any major changes when I tried different res, just a difference in how much the game screen output takes.

And yes, I have already installed all relevant FF8 mods but since it's been forever that I played the game I'm not so good at picking up the changes haha. But the examples in the links tell it all I guess.

Regarding FXAA I'm not even sure what that is! But I'll look into it. My card is a GeForce GTX 760.

It's a fullscreen shader anti aliasing method. Your graphic card should also have another option: TXAA. The game normally refuse to use anti aliasing, but shader based AA will work.

Yes, your card have FXAA. Kaldarasha is a graphics expert here, so he will explain a lot better than me. I'm a little lost in that matter...
