AMD and NVIDIA both have different problems with FF7 modding. And in general.

Personally I'm not a big AMD fan. In pretty much all cases, I've had nothing but trouble with their drivers. Crashing, constant reinstalls... it ain't worth it to me. Of these two cards, the AMD is easily the more performant, but if I were buying I'd still go with NVIDIA. That said, if you use Linux AND prefer to use open-source drivers, AMD is a far better choice; but if you're on Windows, or if you want to use official Linux drivers, I'd definitely recommend the NVIDIA option.

GTX 800 series is already out, and mobile exclusive. 900 series will be out very soon, and its biggest advantage is that it's much more efficient. Most likely, this will save money in the long run on power draw, but it doesn't seem to have much in the way of exciting new features the way 600 series did.

For that money you could also buy a second hand R9 290, which is way more performance than both those cards. Most of the second hand ones are new enough to still be in warranty and all.

Helped out a few of my friends which are happy now. Though the reference cooler cards make a lot of noise while gaming, shouldn't matter much if you have a decent case. (For instance, I have a Fractal Design R2 XL and can barely hear it under load.)

I have never had any issues with my r9 290x for what it is worth.

Nvidia 970/980 are coming out later this week, might as well wait a few days and watch the prices drop on 'older' cards

The R9 285, even the 280 has more raw power, thus will perform slightly better in most benchmarks, especially DX9 if you care. However the NVidia cards are better in real applications like gaming where the full potential of your hardware is rarely fully exposed. If you just go for the synthetic Benchmark/price ratio AMD is a little better but a Nvidia card is more worth it in fact. AMD also has some games where they really brake with the fps and sometimes issues with the way it looks. Assassins Creed 3 e.g. has weird texture garble on some spaces and it cant be fixed other than buying another card. Nvidia simply has better drivers and also stuff like Physx or tesselation, also consumes much less power and runs colder.

With AMD you CAN have more performance but Nvidia is always worth what you paid for and usually looks better, too.

In the current comparison, its definately the GTX 760!! AMD only makes sense when choosing a card that saves you a good bunch of money.

But just as its been said before in this thread, waiting is not a bad option at the moment.

R9 280 is based on the 7970 hardware which is years old. I would suggest the R9 285 if you go that route as it should support amd's latest stuff like mantle and trueaudio

Impressive TDP on the GTX 970!! Seems I can keep my power supply for upgrading after all!Getting a new CPU would need a lot more power however my current GPU eats much more than 200W so it could end up balanced out with this! Yeah lol

Maxwell is a pretty impressive piece of hardware. 980 beats my 290x at almost half the wattage of my furnace.

If you ask me,I would get a Radeon HD 7750 or 7790.The same architecture to the R7 series but less shader units and heat and cheaper because its old.
