The game was working yesterday. PC left to do updates overnight and now it's not running.
Nothing in the app log, 7H gives no error.
It just goes black, does that beep thingy and closes again.
No matter what i do, run with or without mods.
Any of the exe's.
Even if i remove the fake ISO it doesn't complain about it, doesn't even get that far..

Try running the config prog again. This happens to me almost every time hardware updates occur. The sound gets unset and the game crashes without any indication as to why.
-
I know this doesn't help you, but that's why I disable updates entirely. You have to ask yourself how much gain you get by having Windows update and in my case it's none. I use Win 7 - update once - then disable for good. Too many times an update breaks something and I don't want something messing about in the background anyway.
edit
Also what NFITC1 said is likely the cause. FF7 will crash if sound isn't set in the config.

Ran the config, now it doesn't beep but stays black for longer, might run the GC again. DLPB i agree entirely
EDIT: It also knows the disk is missing now so i am getting somewhere
EDIT 2: Yep, i fixed it. It undid my sound device, wow that was the best customer service ive ever recieved in my life :D
Thanks guys

I only knew about the sound thing because it has happened to me DOZENS of times in the past (http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15119.msg211926#msg211926). I'm not even sure why arbitrary updates break it.
-
Oh god that sucks .. at least a simple enough fix anyway. Not updating anymore anyway
-
I disabled updates as well. They always break the game, and I have to run GC again to get the registry fixed.

Probably a very unhelpful post, but there has to be something else that causes FF7 to not work. I currently use Win10 with the latest updates installed including the anniversary, and I don't have any troubles. In fact, I've never had ANY trouble with games not working in general in regards to OS updates; even in the past with Win7.

Are you playing on the Steam or 2012 release? Those are likely "less broken" with this regard.

Oh I got the similar problem in Windows 10.
At that time, my problem is in config.exe
(http://i64.tinypic.com/dwp3cg.jpg)
The sound driver column showed "BLANK" after W10 update, so redefining it from the drop down menu for FF7 solved no start problem.
Could you try this ?
ficedula gave me this clue;

Yep, that's the same as running the GC if you're using 7H. It'll open ff7config.exe in the process and you can set the Sound Driver again.
-
Yeah thanks. I fixed this within about 10mins of posting.

Hello, I'm having the same issue, but I'm unsure how to fix it, I know of the same bug, but anytime I had an update that messed it up, I would just delete everything, redownload ff vii through steam, convert it again, then redownload all the mods in 7th heaven and that worked for me each time.
But now that I had to force myself to upgrade to windows 10 before it didn't become free anymore way back, I haven't been able to play it in awhile. The deleting everything doesn't work anymore, so it can't be tied to my sound since, when converting the steam version each time I set my sound device. Yet it still does the same thing each time, I don't know what to do.
-
Do you get any errors? What happens?
-
The same thing as the original post, it appears black with a beep for a split second, then auto closes.
I actually fixed that problem by opening the config.exe and choosing a sound driver again, because it became blank again for some reason despite me having just installed it, but now when it starts it does this http://puu.sh/slLHA/b151345926.png
My config.exe looks like this http://puu.sh/slLTC/ad54e25db8.png http://puu.sh/slLVE/97e5ba1338.png http://puu.sh/slLXV/34bba14783.png
I notice that each time I launch the config.exe it makes my resolution become really tiny for a split second before fixing itself, and when I try to start the game the resolution becomes tiny and doesn't fix itself, so that may be the cause, I'm not sure
Also I'm sorry if that's not how image posting works on this, these are my first posts cus I'm worried about how I can't seem to play anymore so I'm looking for help
-
Are you running the converter again after you do the config?
-
No I'm not, I didn't know you were supposed to do that, I'll try that now
-
It worked!!! Thank you so much, I'm sorry if this was a dumb question with a really simple answer, I had just never encountered issues til windows 10, thank you so much for taking your time out for a really dumb question!

Hey its fine. You have to fail at something to learn it.
