I wonder if I would be able to play without buying the game and only pay monthly.  After all, I have all the updates.

Not if I'm currently playing it as a beta tester.

I'm talking about if the ones who got to beta test get to keep their copy of the game and just pay monthly.  I also wonder if I get to keep my character.

Usually in game beta tests, I don't think you can update the beta version to the release version with a patch.  But, I would imagine that they would give you a copy of the release version on CD and just let you pay the monthly fee.

But I'm not them, so what do I know?

Doubtful.. every beta testing thing i have seen they dont allow that.. When you think about it take a MMORPG for example it would give beta testers a very unfair advantage/headstart.. When blizzard was beta testing a game they stated that they wouldnt allow people to keep their characters..

Besides, FFXI works like DAoC where they have a seperate server for testing.  This is also where the beta testers HAVE to play, so when they buy the game I guess they could still have their character on the test server if S/E lets 'em, but it would be just like DAoC where the test server has all of like 30 people on it.
