Title: Final Fantasy 8 Translating
Post by: YarYar on 2003-10-11 17:07:28
Hi! I'm a hungarian guy who want to translate the FF8 to hungarian language. I have a question. How can I edit the FF8's Battle Texts, Menus, Tutorials, etc.? With Qhimm's Garden program I can edit the field text data but I want to translate the whole game. Please help!

To the best of my understanding Garden was somewhat incomplete... It worked and all, but had bugs.. consider it like an alpha release.. I didnt think that it would edit all that stuff.. I thought it was just for the field text...

Yes, the Garden is incomplete. But there is no other way to translate the battle texts and the others?

If I recall correctly the text inside the Ff8 data files jumps around a lot.  Also, does Hungarian use special characters ? These may not be supported.

Ofcourse you can translate it.. but its going to require a lot of work with a hex editor.

Except the "Ő" the FF8 support all the hungarian character. Which file contains the texts? If I must make with hexedtior, I make with that.

And another question. How can I decompress-edit-compress the background images of the FF8 if I want to redraw them.

Here, in poland we're trying to translate FF8 too, but it's not our (FF7PL) team ;). AFAIK they know how to translate menu and few other things. They've enhanced Garden too. Maybe I can catch their project coordinator's email, and contact him with you ;)

Oh, man! Please make it! I need that Garden :) The hungarian peoples will be very happy and your name goes to the FF8 Hungarian Translator Team's Credits list.

If you don't understand what I want to say, it's because i don't speak english very vell. Sorry!

Me too :P. But I have to disappoint you. The only change they made this far to Garden is that now it's extracting all files from game. And still they don't know how to import translated files (eg. Menu) to game.

No problem. I know few hungarian programmers who very clever. Perhaps we could make it. Two cleverer than one. How can I get it?

Finally :D. I wrote a program to manage archives in FF8. It can extract and import files to them. Link Here (http://mav.pix.pl/personal/ff8ac_eng.zip). I translated it to English, but leaved Help menu in Polish, cause I don't have time now :P. Hope this will help you translate the game ^^.

You'r the best, man! Very thanks and of course your name goes to the credits list. At Saturday i refresh my page and write your name. Then I write here the link if you want to visit it. But it's hungarian.

I tried out your program. It's working! BUT. I can decompress the data files, but i can't edit them. The files full of incomprehensible letter. I can't find the text anywhere. Where is it and how can i edit them?

Here is a picture from the hungarian version. It's now 60% complete (60% of the field text data). If you want to see it.

Great job man! Glad I could help :). As for the dialogs... They're of course in field.fs. There are sereral (900) archives in it, and in them, you can find .msd files. In this files, you can see some text, but it's completely unreadable. It's because small characters are "shifted" by 2 letters (for eg. a means c), and big characters are shifted by 5 letters back (X means T). Maybe I'll write a program for editing dialogs from single files if I'll find a while or two :).

The upper translation made with the Garden. But if my understanding good, the battle texts and the menus are unreadable, too. Why the Squaresoft hide the datas?

I don't now, I'm new to FF8 :P. You have to check that ;). If I'll find more time, I'll search for that :).
Edit: Oh, forgot to add: In FF7 menu texts were in .exe file. Try to search for them there ;).

IIRC, the Menu text is all in kernel2.bin. The file is LZS compressed. However, you can already edit all of it with Cosmo--just use the "Internal Editor" tool.

M4v3R: Very cool. I going to have to check out this new FF8 archive editor of yours.

Srethron: You're talking about FF7 and we're talking about FF8 :P.
BTW, my program has a bug - if you replace a file that is compressed, it'll ruin all files after it. I've repaired it, and here it is:
Link (http://mav.pix.pl/personal/ff8ac.zip)
I still didn't tested it in-game, I've only checked if Eight is able to extract all files from archive I changed.

So menu texts aren't here, and this keyboard... You can check that if you change some of these texts - will it change in game in controls menu ?
Some text (there are 17Kb's of it) can be found in .msg files within menu archive. They're encoded with the same method as dialogs. I can read there text's like:
"Silences Echo Screen", "Thundaras Dynamo Stone", "G2Returners Dragon Fang", "refines into ..." or "Reverse Revive party member from KO". But still I can't find words "Junction", "Item" and others from menu...

Edit: Found it! It's in mngrp.bin from menu archive. Encoded with same method. I can read there "Item Item Menu Magic Magic Menu GF Guardian Force Menu" and other ;).

Thanks!  There's no a program what make the encode instead of me? It's a hard work.
Title: Final Fantasy 8 Translating
Post by: mav on 2003-10-18 15:29:15
Encoding isn't hard - you can edit file with Translhextion or Thingy or other hex editor which supports thingy tables. The problem are pointers you see at beginning of every 'section'. If you want to edit these texts you must adjust manually these pointers too. And THIS is a hard work :P. I can write a program for editing the file, but you'll have to wait - I don't have much amount of free time ;). Maybe focus on in-game dialogs now ? :).

I've developed some small prog to decode this 'FF8 Chineese'. If you want it - it's here (http://mav.pix.pl/personal/ff8text.zip). But for prog that can edit files you must wait, because I must understand file's structure first ;).

This is some difficult task, but can be done ;). You'll need LGP Tools for it. Simply load some archive, and insert tex file to it. Now dbl click on it, then right click and choose 'Save as BMP' and you have BMP file :). When you fishish edit them, run Tex tool, choose original tex file and modified bmp, and click Import. If you have OK message then everything's ok, you modified your texture :).
Edit: Still, my program wasn't importing compressed files to archive. I've fixed it, and I hope that It'll finally work in game. Someone want's to test it ? :D. Link (http://mav.pix.pl/personal/ff8ac.zip)

Edit2: Yeeeees!!!! It works ^^. Here:

I know the font's are nasty and ugly ^^". But they're working with game!! It's a proof that my program works and translation can be continued!! Polish people are celebrating ^^.

well i'm from holland, and personally I HATE WHEN COMPANIES TRANSLATE GAMES TO DUTCH.

same with cartoons, they tranlated ed, edd 'n eddy to dutch, AAAAAAAARGH the best ever made to worst ever, EEK in dutch ARGH!, Life with louie with jokes translated to be like dutch people. it Stinks.

And 98% of dutch game community agrees, games in english > j00

while the translation bit is coming along quite well i think it would be interesting for someone to rescript the whole game to tell a different story.. yeah yeah yeah.. copyright infringement.. but eh.. call it fanfiction

It would breathe some new life into the game .. replay it to see what the characters say .. maybe i'm crazy..

& yeroon your right lots of stuff is lost in translation.. i.e., in english there is one word for love in greek i think there are 5 .. or so i heard..

I found it why my game quit back to the Windows! It's not because your program. Your program work perfectly. It's because the edited files. I tried it out. I extract the mngrp.bin, edited it, and replaced the original file with the edited file. The program was't worked. Then, I changed something. I extracted the mngrp.bin, NOT EDITED IT, and replaced the original file with the NON-EDITED file. The game worked, and not quited back to Windows. It's mean, the FF8 not very like if someone modificate his files without the proper program. OR I used the wrong programs to edit the file. That's my opinion. I hope I helped in something.

Oh, I almost forgot! I used the followin programs to edit the file:
Microsoft Word 97
NEXT-Soft Hex-Editor 2000
Good old NOTEPAD :)

Man! I made it! Made it and working! In your page (half hour search because I didn't understand anything :) I found THE program. The Translhextion. With this program I can modoficate the file and the game didn't quit back to Win. I'm very happy and the hunarian peoples, too. I'm very thanks to the programrammer who write this program, and of course you too. I would never be able to make these translation If we don't meet here. So, you are the God for me  :D

Anyway, I translated the Desert to Sivatag and Magic-Mágia. Didn't work. I don't know if the translation made the file bigger or smaller.

Yes, these are tools for managing LGP archives and translating FF7 ;). I wrote them because cosmo had some nasty bugs :). And yes, when I'll find some time, I'll translate them.
Oh, and congratz about the translation!

Thanks for the gratulation. But without your help, I couldn't do it. Oh, I refreshed my page. I write your name to the Credits list. If you wanna see it, here is the URL: http://www.deers.ini.hu

In here, in the upeer menu, click on the "Magyarítások -> Készülű Magyarítások -> Final Fantasy VIII"

Your name in the "Special thanks to..." part. At weekend, I upload some new data (Toshiro's name goes to the list too for his great Thingy Table).

Fonts? What fonts?

He probably means the fonts for the game speech.

Fonts in Final Fantasy 8 ? Or you didn't have to ?

I didn't modificate the fonts. The FF8 can handle the hungarian special characters.

The hungarian translation is now 90%.
Title: I'm not finished this yet! :D
Post by: mav on 2003-11-21 10:15:58
Ok, so here's the deal. I wrote recently a program that let you modify texts in mngrp.bin file and some others based on pointer&text structure. With it, I was able to translate some part of menu (not all of it, because I'm not a translator - only a hacker :P). Here:

And I've done this with this program (http://mav.pix.pl/personal/ff8point.zip). I hope that it helps you hungarian guys ;).
Edit: Some hints for using the prog: When you load file, you must type offset of text section. The default offset is 24 - which is first section. Second is 824 (offset of byte that represent number of text items in section), etc. Then you can translate each Item's. But beware! Some sections are one after another, and if trasnlated text will be longer, it'll overwrite next section!! You must use it with caution  8).

I extended Toshiro's Thingy Table with the hungarian special characters. Except the "ő" and "Ő". You can download it from here. (http://free.srv.hu/d/e/deers/tthunspec.rar)

M4V3R: I found something. In the main.fs is a file named kernel.bin. It has a lot of text. GF Summon names, Item names, Magic names, GF's Abilities names and description, enemy's attack names, weapon names,  after battle table texts (when you receive EXP, and AP) and the in-battle menu, so, a lot of things. But, i don't know what to do. Read the next line.

m#ic#GF#Summ#Gu#dian Force#Item#Us#item

Some character is missing, and replaced with #
Can you say anything about it?

I modified some text. Here is the outcome.

This is when I summon Shiva (Gyémántpor=Diamond Dust):

And when I summon Diablos (Sötét Hírvivő=Dark Messenger):

#PROFESSOR MODE ON#

D.T.E. = Double Tile Encoding
M.T.E. = Multiple Tile Encoding

Those 2 technics are used to save space especially on roms. In the first case normaly 2 chars are on the same tile. For example small ones like a double l. In the second case you have a string (a word or a phrase). In both case you print them on the screen just by using one hex.

Examples.

DTE:
A1=on
in this case the word Summon it's composed by 5 hex instead of 6

A1=mmon
in this case the word Summon is composed by 3 hex instead of 6 or you can even have that the whole word is A1.

In both cases you have somewhere in the game (normaly in the EXE) the full table of the DTEs/MTEs that you can modify. Normaly they both uses standard pointers.

#PROFESSOR MODE OFF#

I hope it's clear  :D

Looking at the dump... seems that DTE are used. Try to find the missing parts in the EXE. Like on (of Summon), ar (of Guardian) and ag (of magic). Using the table you posted of course

that's almost what i was talking about. There they are using 2 hex. Normaly whan 2 hex are used the game refears to a special "action". In this case the names of the chars- Search for the others you need, normaly they are 1 hex.

Still, Sapphire has some bugs. Meaning... some locations isn't very translation-friendly. This goes to parts of Shinra HQ (there are some pointers that point some garbage) and some others. Still, many (near all) locations can be translated.
