Title: crash at Cosmo Canyon
Post by: uffe1909 on 2004-05-01 12:29:48
Hi;
I seem to be one of the people that is "blessed" :wicked: with the crash when viewing the movie sequence at Cosmo Canyon.
After the comment about the shooting star the screen freezes.
After days of installing patches, copying and replacing movie files, updating drivers, etc and still no result i am getting desperate.
Is there anybody that can help me by playing past this part using my save file?
Save file can be found at:

And how exactly do you plan on getting it back?
Need an email address or something....

I looked in your profile.....I hope it's correct...anyway....

While playing thru, I noticed something, You say it cashes when you see the falling star. I just notice that a sound effect plays on my left speaker as the shooting star goes by. I bet you that that is what is causing this movie to crash. It has to be Sound Related.....meaning SoundCard related.

I had this problem with another movie once...biglight.avi. when the weapons were screaming the sound was way out of sync and would crash my PC....the solution for me was to put Dxdiag in basic mode.... I've also had FF7 crash on me during the Dolphin thing....the game would crash everytime the Splash sound effect would try to play. Basic mode fix that, too.

Now, in the past I've been suggesting this cure to other people, for this certain crash, but it doesn't work for them.....so the solution has to lie somewhere else......the question is where? I'm going to guess that it's a codec problem.....some kind of Codec conflict.

If anyone knows how to delete Codecs from windoes, I bet that would be the start of a solution to this crash.

For win98, you would go into multimedia icon in Control Panel and start removing them manually, under Devices and Video Compression Codec. But it's kinda extreme....I don't know what it would mess up. I've done that once, in Win95....years ago, and Win95 ended up reloading Codecs as it needed them. In otherwords it didn't mess anything up....but that was Win95.

Interesting... well, anyway, for deleting codecs (in Windows XP):
Go to the device manager, go to Sound, Video and Game Controlers -> Audio (or video) Codecs and Properties, then go to the second tab.  Here's a list of codecs, and you can just click one and hit "Remove."

I've never done this, I don't want to mess with the codecs on my system, but it looks like that would work.

Maybe if you posted a list of codecs that show up in your list, and we can compare it to ours and see if you have extraneous ones?

Threesixty
The mail address you used was correct.
Thanks for the effort. Ill try the save file this evening at home.
As for finding a solution:
I already tried the sound in basic mode, and indeed it this did not work for me.
I'll keep a backup of the save file before the crash so i can reproduce the problem and post a list of codecs. maybe someone can figure out what the problem is.
Maybe it is an idea to post a link to a save file after this crash ( and maybe some others ) in http://forums.qhimm.com/viewtopic.php?t=1662 FAQ: How to get FFVII PC running on Win2K/NT5.
This way users having the same problem can use these save files in stead of having to find someone to play past the problem.
using the jenova program you can than modify it so it is equal to your save file before the problem.

The only problem with having a downloadable savefile  is that your items and leveling won't be the same.

Well wont you be able to change them using the jenova.exe and for the levels the ff7che.exe?
I was busy doing that when you mailed me my save file.
The only problem i had was that in my save file i had the Yuffie character already in my party, and in the save file she wasn't and i could not add her. ( i could add her, but this made cloud invisible  :o  and she was not selectable when a party needed to be assembled) so i guess you would need 2 save files. one with and without yuffie.
I do not know enough about other common crashes to know if the same would be necessary there but i think the only other optional character is Vincent so this would limit the number of saves.
If i now search for requests for save files ( in this and other forums) i seem to only find 2 or 3 moments where unsolvable problems occur, so posting 6-9 save files and some instructions on how to use the save editors could help a lot of people continuing there game without having to find a helpful person to play past the problem.

I don't know anything about codecs, I don't seem to have that many..... maybe those DMO ones are causing the problem? This is a Win98SE machine, though with a SBlive soundcard, with obsolete drivers (non DirectX9 compatible)

I think we may be looking in the wrong area for answers when it comes to video codecs. The movies included with ff7pc are all in Truemotion 2.0. When the movies play in ff7, IIRC all filters are removed so that a raw compressed file is played. If we were to delete tm20dec.ax, the ff7 movies are unplayable in windows media player. However, they still are playable in ff7. I can't really determine what that means.

I think it may have something to do with sounds as threesixty has been telling us for the longest time. As far as the audio in the ff7 movies are concerned, it is 22050 Hz 8-bit uncompressed. I really don't know the mechanics of the extra sounds from the LGP's being played during the fmv's, so all I really can provide at the moment is some facts.

Tried Jari's bat files (guess i trust you, and of course first checked what they would do).
Got errors on clvsd.ax and claud.ax "Cant load into memory library... module not found"( translated from dutch so maybe not 100% accurate)
Tested it anyway, but no go: scene still freezes

I'm going to download a trial version of PowerDVD to see if I can make FF7 screw up at the cosmo canyon. I shall report my (terrible) results later.

[EDIT]

"Unfortunately", FF7 did not crash after installing PowerDVD 5.0 (trial). I checked to see if an audio codec was installed, and there was:

CyberLink Audio Decoder, CyberLink Corp.,   CLAUD_TRIAL.AX

Well, it's not the same exact audio codec..but it was worth a try. I'm starting to think that maybe audio codecs have nothing to do with the problem.

We don't need to go around looking for trouble, now.  Seems to me that Rubicant can offer his help if he wants to.

A question:
Should i be able to view the ff7.AVI files in the Windows media player?
Because whenever i try to open one of the avi files in the movie directory i only get a black screen in the mediaplayer ( this is for all the ff7 avi files, not only the boogstar.avi) The play indicater does move to the end and indicates it played 2 out of 2 seconds.

Yeah you definately should be able to watch the movies in Windows Media Player. I think you need the True Motion codec.

No, it was because of Media Player that I found out that the sound timing was off....

When it was playing on Media Player, the timing was fine, but in the game, the weapon would scream when the movie was zooming in on Tifa, as she was falling on the deck of the Highwind. The scream of the weapon was delayed something like, well I can't remember. How ever many seconds that the movie shows the weapon screaming, and tifa falling....maybe 10 seconds or something. The game would freeze as soon as the scream started. I guess it was a DirectX problem.

But, I never had the Observatory problem...

Hey, that's wierd....we almost have the same number of posts.

jippy;
More blessings.
This time the game freezes when i am on a date.
After giving a great performance in the play i enter the gondola with Aeris.
After a few sentences the gondola windows turn black and after the next sentence all actions freeze ( except some blinking of eyes). Even if i would not mind getting stuck in a gondola on a date for a while i at some point would like to move on
Anybody that knows a solution?
Does anybody know of similarity's between what happens at the gondola and at Cosmo Canyon which might help solve this .
If there is no known solution could someone please help me ( again ) by playing past this part?
The save game is uploaded at :
http://home.zonnet.nl/uffe1909/save02.ff72
( do not forget to remove the 2 at the end )
if someone could play past this part and send the new save to [email protected] my thanks will be countless

Relf,
Wow,you must be real desperate, posting the same problem 5 times in different topics  :-? .
Since i can not play past this part myself, ill upload the save file threesixty fixed for me.
It includes the Yuffie character.
If you feel you desperately miss items, materia, etc use jenova to edit the save file.
You can get the file athttp://Http://home.zonnet.nl/uffe1909/save02.ff7.fixed

Solved the problem by downloading a ff7 version of the net.
Copied the movies to my HD and ran the codec setup .
After that the movie played fine.
Since the movie files seem identical to the original this definitely seems to be a codec problem.
The setup included was different than the one on the cd so it might be the original didn't do a good install ?

Or it could be that the cause of the shooting star crash and the date crash is because there were a bad batch of Cd's released by Eidos. Probably a bad batch of Install Disks....from some obscure factory, that was released in every 500th package.

And if that's the case....no wonder, no one can find a solution.

Think it could possibly be to do with the TrueMotion codec. Haven't been back to Cosmo since I installed it, but went through the Gondola OK both in software and hardware modes
