This is a bit out of the blue, but I have been trying to overcome a problem, with FF8.
See, when I play FF8, the sound is crackling and chirping (in some locations, especially on the Garden) damn, it's annoying! I have a P2 266 mhz and 64 mb of RAM, does any of you have the same problem (with ff8)?
-
Well, *I* have. But instead of trying to fix it, I stopped playing FF8. Worked just as fine, now I don't hear those crackling noises any more.
-
is there sarcasm in that qhimm?
-
Qhimm? Sarcastic? Naw.
-
A P266 may be too slow to do all of the software MIDI stuff, try getting the FF8 Configurator and changing it to use your sound card for MIDI. I have a P2 400 mhz and I get crackles when the scene changes. My friend has a P3 933 mhz and it doesn't crackle at all...
-
Duron 1200 (Overclocked like hell) even crackles, it's the messed up software midis apparently. Letting sound card do the work makes it go poof

cheap speakers..... :D (I'm kidding.....maybe :o )
Have you tried turning down the Bass?
(and...what language was that? Altavista's translator won't work on it.)

I run a P3 550 and my sound is fine... i have 256 mb ram and the skipping stopped too... (basically it was just kinda dragging like it wanted to go into a battle every scene but didnt then it would be fine until the next scene)
-
it means i will try the configurator. Damn, it worked. Also, when I go to battle, the screen which brushes away the field screen and goes to battle screen, is 300 % faster! thanx ye all...
-
Hyvä, sait sen siis toimimaan? (ahem, that's more Finnish to ya guys, bwahahaha). *Okei, takas enkkuun* Anyway, FF8 midi music still sucks, even when it works fine. So if you use Config, you can set SB Live to play Soundfonts, but you need FF8 soundfonts (Jari's Timber fonts are good, but Jared's SF2 is ok too). Sam Slight makes the best patch, but then you gotta use Microsoft's Synthesizers to play the music... and that might cause the problems with music again.
BTW Here's a great wonderful solution for horrible FF8 music: Play it on PSX! And if you don't have PSX, get it for PSX emulator. I myself got FF9 for ePSXe, and it worked perfectly. I even finished it. The loading times and graphics are way better than in PSX. The music is also digital and the emulator plays it with all the PSX instruments. And I believe the system requirements for that aren't too much, most likely even lower than FF8 PC's requirements.
-
Curses! ePSXe is good to play FFIX on but its randomly crashing damnit! And its probley a format job!
-
I have tried the timber soundfont, but it takes 1/2 of my ram (i have 64 mb)
-
The problem with running FF9 in ePSXe is that if you wanna use a good video plug-in (Pete's) for 3D support and enhancements, you gotta have the frame-skip OFF (at least if you wanna see the battle menus). So, on some older systems, this causes it to run slow sometimes, where FF8 (PC) would run skipping frames, going full-speed.

If you're using the FF8 Configurator then Timber only uses - IIRC - 6-8MB? Because that's all it uses at any one time...
Of course, that does rely on getting Configurator working.

i was casualy glancing at this topic, and i must say its my favorite kind.
its the kind that turns into a ton of questions with little to no sure answers and then i find it and answer everybody at once 8-)
run all games threw a unecm program of your choice" unecm is a indespensable game tool that basicly "defrags" games to make them faster and compatable" just type in google any arrangment of the words ecm, unecm, or run ecm iso's and you will get a better explanation.also final fantasy has released (for free i might add) special edition's of its games for pc. there ment to be play'd on the pc and are FAR more compatable. as for FF8 sound. use petesDsound. my computer is from 1989 and im playing at full speed with perfect sound o.o let me reliterate that, my computers software is phoenix lab 1989-2001. purchased in the year 1998 or so.....so ya...trust me its a good sound plug in.
last but not least,
and this is most likely common sense, but,
a gpu(graphics plugin) is usually linked o.o by the soul...to the spu(sound plugin)and cdr(the virtual core of your emulator)
evidence of this is in any and all cdr's there is an option to turn off audio/graphics list "list" as in, it will ignore certain Musical events that slow your computer down, or skip game video's intirely. also the option (dynamic link Blocking) has a direct influence on speed, but thats only needed on the n64....my point is that wether its an n64/espxe/psxfin, or no$gameboy
your gona wanna try combination of all 3 types, even if one stank to begin with, it wont always stink.

Congratulations, I think you've set a new record.
It's just a pity you couldn't have waited another six weeks. You could have made the first ever 10-year necropost.
