Chrono Trigger is for the SNES, but a re-release for the PSX was released in Japan a while ago. Good news is that it's US-bound. Is it as good as ff7? It's one of the best games in existence IMHO.
-
I couldn't agree more. Some might disagree, but Chrono Trigger is one of Square's top 3 games, IMHO. It was the first RPG I ever played. Awesome game--and it wasn't even complete! They had to scrap some stuff, but until someone told me, I had no clue.
-
crap stuff? where?
anyway
as a first snes game i recommend to anyone would be chrono trigger then suiken densetsu3 and tales of phantasia. chrono trigger was a mamoth project they got 2 of sqaures top music writers together, they got the guy who made dragon quest to pitch in too. it all paid off though.
but i think the start of the game lacks excitement. and the new game+ option is great for replying the game!
i could go one bout the game, but i got it by chance, only on someones recommendation of good music and 'by sqauresoft'.
if u want it go get it from www.plasticman.org under emulation and head for plasticman's emulation and then under snes then rpgs then read the agreement...
-
thanks The Skillster, i couldnt find the rom ANYWHERE. they were all dead links.
hey cHiBiMaRuKo (Chan), youre a popular little bugger arent you? while i was looking for snes roms i found the game you named yourself after and i keep seeing you around on websites. then when i downloaded a (naughty) hack for Chrono Trigger, i found it was done by you!
-
If you really want I can send you the rom
-
thanks SaiNt, but the plasticman.org download just finished. it was a nice thought though. :)
-
Yes, I'm the one who made that hack. Still doing it on my spare time :). But after the point when Lavos sucks the party to Ayla time, there's been a LOT of texts/pointers to be edited, whic is surely take a lot of time. I will release it after I really finished with it, which I hope could be done this year :)
-
crono trigger does kick ass
-
i just left the palace in 600AD or something after the first time travel and im in the Cathedral fighting those freaks. its a very good game. when you first go throught the time traveller and it shows those swirly things its looks amazing for a snes. so did they revamp the game for the PS, like improve the graphics and stuff?
-
well, the touched up the gfx a bit
introduced anime style movies for the cut scenes
but you know the biggest secret of the jap version of the psx remake?
you really wanna know?
theres a file in the root directory called rom.bin (or something) its about 3meg in size.
copy that to harddrive
rename it to chrono.smc
open zsnes and load it in and...
you guessed it , its the original snes version of chronotrigger!
so all they did was drop the res (psx does 320*280, while snes handles upto 500*380 or something) and show movies when you reach certain parts of the game.
thats all basically
-
Yeah there IS a copy of the SNES ROM on the CD... but I'm not sure if it has to do with the game at all... If it did, you could buy Chrono Trigger for PSX, change the ROM on it, burn a new CD, and you'd have a SNES emulator for PSX (or a good start at making one).
Plus, Chrono Trigger runs in UNDER 320x240 (I could find the exact res but I'm too lazy to do it now), although SNES can support larger resolutions, most games don't go past 320x240.
-
well if they used the BIN file for the gmae wouldnt that mean the PSX would have to understand the same language the snes uses? can anyone help me with ZSnes? cos it always crashes when i exit the program.
-
errr plz zplain in detail, your specs, the zsnes you r using etc.
aaron:
i dont think thats res is the true res, why?
cause if you do play zsnes at 320*280 you will see the grapghics are squashed a little more so with the fonts, upping the res solves that so the actuall res is gotta be a little higher.
(hell why would they have put that 512*320 res then? they couldhave stayed with the vesa compatible 640*480 then?- zsnes, im talking about here)
and yes, square must have made a snes asm interpretor/translator, OR a emulator!!
why nintendo didnt check it out is anybodies guess :P
-
im using Zsnes 1.17. ive got a
pentium pro 2 MMX,
32 mb ram,
4 GB,
Win 98 SE,
ATI rage 2 or something graphics card which isnt 3d,
uuummmmm i think thats it. i set the option to allow the MMX thing too.
-
Ok, I looked it up.
Chrono Trigger runs in standard SNES resolution, which is 256x224. Don't believe me? Look at this:
http://www.geocities.com/aaronkelley.geo/chronotrigger.gif
That screenshot contains *ALL* of the data sent from the SNES to your television. In ZSNES, you can up the res of the games with filters like scanlines, 2xSaI, SuperEagle mode, etc. but in reality, this is all the detail that is there. (Chrono Trigger actually has that black bar along the bottom for a lot of the game...)
512x320: This resolution is for games that take advantage of the Super Nintendo's "High-Res" mode. The only games I know of that do this are the Secret of xxx series (Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Sieken Destentsu 3 [spelling?], etc.). Oh yeah, the credits in Lufia II are high-res, 512x320.
ZSnes doesn't work? Try Snes9x... I like it better anyway.
All of the resolutions supported by the SNES are: 256x224, 256x239, 512x224, 512x239, 512x448 and 512x478. Most games run 256x224, I've seen ONE that goes 256x239, and rarely do they go higher than that.
-
oh, the link dont work
and secret of evermore IS NOT from square and isnt from the sieken denstesu (scret of mana) series and it sucks!!
-
I know its not from Square, I know it stinks... but it uses high-res I think.
Try this one http://www.vanguard.org/students/wpd2/kelleyaaron/!stuff/chronotrigger.gif
-
i think i remember using Senes9x a long time a go. is it the one with the black background and the menu bar at the top where you select the options and game and stuff? well this post is getting a bit too technical for me.
-
Yeah that's Snes9x.
Anyway I prefer it b/c its programmed for Windows (I know there's Windows ZSNES but its not very good), and also there's new options in newer versions that give better sound than ZSnes in some games like Chrono Trigger and the FFs.
-
k, ill go get Snes9x now. i remember using it when i played 2 roms from The SaiNt's site. a japanese ff which i didnt understand and another ff. cant remember which one. you start off being asked to write your name and then this earthquake starts and the wizard bloke says youve got to be the hero and save everyone. oh yeah, im getting ff9 today!
-
"you start off being asked to write your name and then this earthquake starts and the wizard bloke says youve got to be the hero and save everyone"
I think you're talking about Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. That was made by Square USA, not Square Japan, and its not all that good of a game.
In fact... its pretty bad.
Ok so its really bad.
-
yeah i got to some ice cave and got bored so i stopped then. any idea which ff i was playing? the japanese one?
-
*ehhm* Acctually Final Fantasy: MQ is made in japan by japanese folks, infact there was no anjin in the development at all.. except for the translator.. hmm.. Todd mebe? ..and yeah ffMQ sux big time..
By favorites are FF7(of course  and FF5
pley 'em.. enjoy 'em... *^^*
-
I never liked FF5 much....
FF4, 6, 7, and 9 (especially 9) rule though.
-
Chrono Trigger is a great game. Multiple endings, great graphics, original story. It's right in the top three Square games for sure, along with FFVI and FFVII.
-
Yep... CT was a great game with a charm to it (as most people put it)
but I suggest you Use Snes9x cause it supports OpenGL and OpenGL makes the graphic look sweet...
-
Errr:
I think it was Final Fantasy IV
(or II in the US version)
Houdini
-
k, thanks Houdini.
-
Chrono Trigger bears a striking resemblence to Dragon Quest....
Anyone noticed?

Hey, that copy to hard drive and run with an Snes emulator trick is pretty sneaky.
Can the same thing be done with FF Anthology? I'd like to see if SNES9x can pull off the PSX version of FF6's battle-intro-screen-blur. :D

Damnit, I posted this thread lightyears ago and selected the "Email me when replies are posted to this topic". Now every time someone posts on this I get a bloody email! Is there any way I can stop this?

Darkness: Over a year ago? The first one, yeah. The last one before Lucion posted was about 2 months. That still makes it bad, because IT'S AN OLD TOPIC! (See my other post at the top of this page.)

Hmmm ... .how about that threads should automaticaly lock after a month after last post ?
How about it, Qhimm, Saint, mods ?
-
or rather a month on INACTIVITY.
-
A month after the last post makes more sense PS. I like the idea. It'll help stop these old posts from popping up again.

once again..... dead topic.

Am I the only one that can recall that Secret of Evermore IS a squaresoft title developed by square's american development studio back in the day...??...
As I recall, it was only a NA release, but it was a squaresoft project non the less.
I could be wrong, though I doubt it... =P

Javienn: It was made by SquareSoft, I would know I own it.
Darkness: I was responding to a post that was only 4 days old by Lucion. Not to mention the fact that you responded to it as well.

How'd Secret of Evermore come into this disscussion?
Lucion: I'm assuming you played Chrono Cross (judging by your Serge av.) Did you play it BEFORE you played CT? CC ruins CT, but I still love Chrono Trigger and pretty much hate Chrono Cross.

let dead topics die. i posted to let him know the topic was dead. newbs... yeesh.

No, the Serge avatar was one of the few available, so I chose it. I hate Chrono Cross also, and played it after CT. I played CT after playing Xenogears though, so that probably ruined CT for me. I thought CT would be great because some of the talent who worked on Xenogears also worked on CT. The characters were plain annoying and under-developed. The plot was too predictable, and the dialogue was cheesy, dimenutive, and patently juvenile. Much to my chagrin, CT failed to impress in all areas, except for music, which was admittedly great. It just didn't live up to all the claims stating that CT was the greatest. Maybe if CT was my first RPG, I would feel differently, but I played too many great RPG's before it. End of story.
