Title: FF7 with Windows XP and Radeon 9800
Post by: EvilMike on 2004-08-26 14:56:39
It installs just fine but the 8-bit textures fail and when started up, no movies play.. hit escape and the menu pops up with working sound then hit new game and nothing happens again, no image. Anyone know how to get it working without switching drivers?

System:
P4 2.8ghz
1GB Corsair TwinX 400mhz Dual Channel
Radeon 9800Pro 128mb
Catalyst 4.6
Windows XP with SP2
SB Audigy LS

Sp2 is probably killing your game.  Did you install Direct Draw yet?

Aslo, run FF in Compatabilty mode, for win98/ME.  Then see if it works.

edit:  Moreover, did you install the FF XP Patch yet?

Can you play the movies in Windows Media Player directly?

FF7 working fine in SP2.
Anyway, did you check out the FAQ thread (at the top of the Game Tweaking forum)?  You should try installing the 1.02 patch and the upside-down movie patch.

Tried the 1.02 patch, didn't work. Tried the anime-dude's patch, not working. Tried in compatability mode, didn't work. No direct draw. Cannot play movies in Windows Media Player.

Aha! That's the problem then....

You need this:

No don't think you can...

The best perfomance you are going to get out of your Radeon is by:
1. Applying the 1.02 Patch
2. Check the Riva box (or was in the TNT... can't remember).. experiment.
3. Make sure you have Catalysts > version 3.6

Have not tried AA or AF, but will prob toy with it later. Even with a R9800P it's still granulated during cutscenes and junk

The was completed in 1997 which means it was started in 1994, which means it's REALLY ancient.  Sad thing is it's just now the data is becoming more readily available on it.

They won't show directly because you have a script or program intermediating between and it's whining 'Warning this is from the games area' or some such lameness. Which means it requires a stupid cookie.

Anywho, the first image with cloud near the crator/reunion area is caused by the fact the background is in 16x16 blocks and the driver is stretching it to the wrong 'edge'.  The reason the battle looks better is the background for all battles is.. 3D not the 2d for the FIELD scenes.

An aside, if we ever do find the walk mesh this means we do have a 3d scene layout from the walk mesh. Interesting thought isn't that?

Wow... so we're worshipping a game that popped into the developer's heads 10 years ago?!?

And we're making a movie about a ten year old, overly mass produced game that's still being sold for PSX to this day?!?

Damn. Never thought anyone could milk a MOVIE this long, much less a video game.

And we're STILL patching the game!!

Nice work Square :)
