Hey guys,
I've been around this forum for a bit now just kinda browsing and seeing if there was anything I could help with (with the little knowledge I have). When I picked up FFVII again, I first used the XP Patch from Vamp. Thanks for fixing me on that one... I ended up using the 1.02 patch anyway.
So my problem lies here... whenever I play, I pray that my game doesn't crash cause it does very sporadically. I've been able to play for 40 minutes and then a crash, but sometimes it's 2 minutes and a crash. It does it before every start of a battle (where the screen is supposed to swirl) and then it either freezes with where I was last, or turns black. Then XP pops up with a error window. It's really starting to piss me off because I can't advance in the game. Sorry if someone has mentioned something on this, but I can't seem to find it.
Here are my specs:
Pentium 4 2.0GHZ
Windows XP SP2
ATi Radeon AIW (I know I know... Old Old card... I'm an unrich/poor guy)
Soundmax Integrated (Like I said... Poor)
ASUS P4PE MB
I thought it might have been a sound deal (which I'm also using FF7Music) so I upgraded my Soundmax Drivers but it didn't do anything.
I'm also using the acceleration from the patch (Checked on the TNT) and it works fine (no grids) and looks okay (looks a smidge better than software, but I use it cause it's faster). I'm so clueless on what's going on. Any ideas? Should I try to use the Debug and post that? If so, let me know. Thanks guys!

Tried it without FF7Music? FF7Music tends to be a little unstable.

Hmm... kinda worked. I ended up getting to Materia Keeper fine (after getting stuck in the mansion cause of it crashing) so it crashes less? Or maybe I was just lucky this game. I was running the game on MIDI (even though it sounds bad, I'd much rather play the game) but it still randomly crashes, just not as much. Thanks for the quick answer there though!

Best thing to do is save often, and just grin and bare the crashes. WinXP -supposidly- learns why a progrm is crashing and tries to prevent it. Like, i used to have crashes nonstop, at random intervals.. but, it's kinda started behaving all on its own.
There may be a SP2 compatability issue... I know -I- won't be of much help, but try to get a screenshot of the "ff7.exe is a pos and must be clsoed" dialogue box, see if it gives you an address read error or what, and maybe somoen else here can make heads or tales of it.

Try running it in Windows 98/ME compatability mode. I was crashing everytime I went to snowboard for the first time. Right-click on the FF7.exe, go to Compatability, then in the drop down menu select Win 98/Me, hopefully that'll fix stuff.

Alright, so at least it's good to know that I'm not the only one who is getting these crashes. Sorry, forgot to mention I am running in 98/ME Compatibility (only way I could get past the crashing at the train in the beginning). "Microsoft Works" my ass... I'll take note of the error though with the debug from Cetra and see if that'll shed any light. Thanks!

Maybe try running it in win 95 compatability? I dont think it'd make much difference, but it wont hurt to try =)

Have you tried turning off the Sound Acceleration?
type dxdiag, and go to the Sound tab....put it in Basic or Standard mode.
Your crash is most likely related to Sound or Video....the Swirl effect or the opening sound effect is causing...something.

Hey, I'm new here.
My game always crashes when Aeris does her Limit Break "Healing Wind". Everything just slows down and it completely locks up / crashes.
At least that's how the problem started. Now its getting worse, basically crashing when an enemy does an attack or special move. I'm very early into the game and I'm getting really frustrated.
I have a Toshiba Laptop:
Win2K Service Pack 4
900MHZ PIII lntel
256 MB RAM
S3 Savage/MX/IX video
Any help would on what is causing this random crash would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
