Title: FFVII won't start
Post by: Budfrump2 on 2004-09-08 00:30:13
So after finally managing to find the right codec to make the videos play, my game won't start.  If i launch the game, it goes to a black screen.  If i press enter, it brings me to the new game/continue screen, but if i try start a new game, it again goes to a black screen.  I'm running this on an ATI Radeon 9000 card.  I've tried the the 1.02 patch, the chocobo patch, the upside down video patch, and i have not used the anime vamp patch.  I have tried both software render and direct 3d rendering modes.  Could someone please help me fix this problem as I am dying to finally play this game?  Thanks!

It *sounds* like you DLed it and don't even HAVE the movies to go with it.  In that case, you're SOL, as we don't support pirated copies here.

If you DID buy it, and you do have the disks, do a search on the forums for "getting FMVs to run off your Hard drive".

I do have the retail copy of the game, so thats not the problem.  I've also tried playing the videos from both the hard drive and the CDs.  The problem is, the videos simply wont play when I launch the game (assuming that the first thing that happens when you start a new game is a FMV).

can you play the movies in windows using winamp/windows media player?

have you tried running ff7 in win98/me compatability mode?

The movies work in windows media player.  I just tried running it in win98/me compatibility mode, but no luck.  Still stumped.

I had that kind of problem at the begining. Some video codecs cause conflicts with the TMV codec used by FF7. This might be your problem. If you installed the ACE codec pack, then look no further, it is known to cause conflicts, so uninstall it. DivX 4 Codec might also cause conflicts (well, it did on my computer). If you have neither of them, then I suggest that you uninstall any video codec that wasn't provided with Windows.

I used the k-lite codec pack, and it works great. And of course the chocobo patch. Didn't need the upside down patch though...
