Title: How fast did you beat FFVII?
Post by: blue_heart86 on 2004-12-07 22:17:53
I did'nt go so faST, TOOK  ME 12 HOURS TO BEAT THE GAME. I like to fool around sometimes, you know, talking to  people and such. Well like to hear your best time. Catcha later :)

12 hours? It takes nearly two hours just to get out of Midgar (without stopping to level up and so on). So - other than cheating - how did you manage the entire game in 12 hours?

I think my best time is about 60 hours, and that was the first time I ever played, so I missed a lot of stuff. Now, if I play, it generally goes well past the 100 hour stage where the timer no longer counts ;)

I must say also, it took me around 35-40-45 hours (This is off the top of my head, of course) just to beat the game (And when I say beat, I mean defeat the last couple of bosses [Bizzaro Sephiroth, One Winged Angel Sephiroth, and Jenova]). It also took me around 60-80 hours (That encompasses the previous 35-45 hours) to fully complete the game (All the Battle Square stuff, all the limit breaks, summons, chocobo breeding, sidequests, level 99 for all characters, all the weapons...you name it, I did it within a 60-80 hour time period).

I would say about 40-50 hours if you just zoom through it.

Im glad Im not the only one who seems to be coming up with these hours. I also would like to know exactly how you managed to zip through the game to the one-winged sephiroth fight (Im assuming you didnt actually complete every aspect of the game, did you not?) blue_heart.

When I made a speed run through the game, it was after
playing it about 20 times completely through.  Also
playing parts of the game who knows how many times.

And even then, the fastest I've EVER beaten it was 21:38. That
was without stopping to do anything and running from
battles I felt werent useful. So I really have trouble
seeing 12 hours. Took me that long to get to the Guaes cliff I believe.

I would like to see some saved games throughout the way
of this game to add up how long it took for certain events.
(Also, I've never gotten out of midger in less than 2 and a half)
And I concider myself pretty quick at getting that part done.

I also had 12 hours.. For one particular reason - software mode, or either a glitch causes the time to be counted half. 2 seconds is one second for the game. So the real playtime is at least 24 hours. I think someone posted it somewhere else..
Title: How fast did you beat FFVII?
Post by: Radiosity on 2004-12-08 09:41:07
Ged - Probably me :) Running in software mode causes the timer (but not the game) to run at half speed. Yeah, that being the case, 24 hours does sound reasonable and I think I could pretty easily go through the game with that sort of time.

My first playthrough, liek bunnie was at around 43 hours.

Then I played through again and did EVERYTHING and I got to about 80 hours.

How can you do everything possible AND get under 90 hours?
Title: How fast did you beat FFVII?
Post by: Bunnie-Maru on 2004-12-09 03:29:44
Not that hard.

Ultima Weapon is not insanely hard, its just a matter of following him until he gets to the canyon. He's really a 50-60 level mob if I remember. The weapons are simple. Once you go through the tedious task of Emerald (with a level 99 party I did it with, never came in risk of dying), Ruby is really a piece of cake with the new All-Summon plus your original KOTRT, and mime materia. The quests dont take long at all, such as the breeding (though it is a thing of luck to get the golden one really, even with the right nut), chocobo races are pretty much simple with a golden chocobo (though all the races can be completed without one), and everything else is usually a "fetch me this, that, and this thing's cousin, and I'll give you a prize" quest.

Not impossible at all. Just a matter of luck/strategy/knowing where to get certain items.

Even so, 24 hours seems freakishly fast for a complete run through of the game (my question still goes unanswered if this was a simple beating of the final boss, or a complete rundown of every single thing).

I think time is irelevent... if i can remember correctly the game was suposed to take about 100-50 hours to get to the middle continent :o
but then again i have a memory like a sive/colinder^_^'

the time recall thing i presume is to help you locate the correct save file and time the game EG when you only wanna spend an hour on the game

i could (and probably will )be wrong

ps lost old memory card ... all my old save files gone *sniff*

i can't remember how long it took to beat it the first time, as my memory from my college days is a bit hazy :erm: however i recently beat it again without doing the majority of the side quests (ancient forest, weapons, chocobos, master materias, limit breaks etc.) and i'd have to say it was around 19 hours. if you don't do the mindless levelling up of your characters and just follow the storyline it actually goes by pretty quickly. i can't think of one boss integral to the storyline that required me to run around and level up before beating it. if you go with the flow, the game is designed to allow you to beat it with minimal effort. the second time through i had really hoped to be challenged more, but that wasn't the case. now, i am using my save game after i have completed all the storyline up to chasing Sephiroth in the North Cave, so my new challenges are the weapons ;)

I beat it in probably 40 some hours.. Not solid play though I would leave the game running and go eat dinner.. Then come back to it.. Speeding through the game wasn't my goal.. I wanted to enjoy it.. But then again I also liked the story so i was kinda "rushing" to finish it for that reason..
Title: How fast did you beat FFVII?
Post by: fabriknos on 2004-12-15 04:56:38
yeah with most Final Fantasy games i have to make that decision - do i want to get immersed in the story and follow it through like i would a normal game, or do i try to amass every item and ability and get mega-stats and go all out... usually if the RPG is good enough i'll play twice, or even three times, with the following runs focusing on all the secret items and sidequests etc. with today's RPGs especially, considering how exponentially larger they are than their predecessors, you really need to choose your time wisely. that's why i'll always love the classics like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FF3, Zelda series, even old Phantasy Star, cause there's only so much extra you can do in addition to the main quest. FF7 and FFX in particular really have that ability to sidetrack you for days ;)

yep, that's the best combo for the Weapons also. i actually like to equip it on two characters just in case Emerald's lasers sap all the MP away on one character. you really can't die with that combo.

First time for me was about 50 hours (game time.) At FFWA there was (is?) a mod named Martin who could beat the PSX version in (I think) 8-11 hours. He had screenshots that were reasonably good proof (gone now), although I suppose a GameShark might let you edit the game time, so who knows.
For me, on all versions of Windows later than 95, the clock in FF7PC has run abnormally slow (even slower than what Ged describes.) At the rate I'm going, I think I could give Martin a run for his money, but it wouldn't be legit since it's just some weird bug.

Me for FF7, 60+ hours. Actually blue_heart86's 20-hour finishing time isn't that all unimaginable, as once me and my friends had a challenge to see who could finish FF8 the quickest. My record's 15 hours and something minutes. Naturally, I won. :D My usual finishing time though is far far greater, if I remember correctly, the time counter for my game actually changed colour to red and was no longer incrementing as I've reached the trackable limit (which I believe was 99:59... not sure on this though, have to check).

Well since I made it through FF8 in such short a time I'm guessing it's also possible in FF7. Mind you I did nothing that was unecessary. Always using roads, renting cars, no side-quests, and loading if anyone dies. It was fun though. Maybe I should try it too for FF7.

I know a guy who actually beat the thing in just over 12 hours.. on the playstation.

it involved a lot of saving and redoing of things and speeding through the text, but, it seems possible.  If thre was anywhere where he could gaina  few more seconds, he'd revert bak to an earlier save.

Fuggin kid was nuts.

He would also take the discs out durring fmvs and pop them back in to save time.

so, it's -possible-, but, really really hard.

Okay, I have seen this topic enough and something has really been bothering me.
Since the day it was created I have been ignoring it and hoping others would do the same, and even though a few didn’t, I hoped eventually it would die down.
It goes on and on and I ignore and I ignore but I think I really must point this out.

blue_heart86’s time is nothing special and already known to be a bug.
This in itself does not bother me.

It’s the cocky way he posts about it, pretending it’s slow and nothing special (we already know it isn’t).  Not only that, but he presents it in a tone pretty similar to, “Oh, it’s not special, but better than anyone here can do.”
The guy still only has one post ever.
He posted this thread, then sat around laughing at everyone trying to figure out how he did it.  Didn’t even bother to reply to your questions.

I mean-

Am I the only one who caught this?
I know I’m not imagining things or misconstruing things.  Not this time.  There is no way around it; blue_heart86’s post here is nothing but cockiness.

I ignored it and just hoped others would see that too and ignore it.
And some people posted but I hoped eventually it would be ignored.
It just never happened, so I finally broke down and posted this.
I’m going to bed.

L. Spiro

P. S.: I only went through the whole game twice: once on the PlayStation® and once on my computer.  My times were ~99:59:59 and ~64:32:40 respectively.

That would be my guess. ;) Egotistical adolescent posturing is nothing new. If people manage to find value in tangents, regardless of the original's goal, I'd treat it as a separate matter. Here, I guess, people have. Ignoring over-inflated egos when they're online is very easy. And my second time through, (with the time bug) was over 80 hours game time (got the strategy guide and it turned out there was a *lot* of stuff I missed.)

Post by: yoshi314 on 2004-12-24 10:57:21
i usually get through the 2nd disk fast, since it's boring to me :/

and i stop at north crater at disc3 to fight some movers [those red jumping balls] and magic pots ['gimme elixir!'] until i get some characters to lvl99 [at least cloud] :D that's where most of the time goes away :D [but they give lots of exp / ap]

i usually get a time around 90 hours [i usually end disc2 with 50-60 hours on the counter, and i end disc one after 45 hours]

btw. i noticed that if your party is relatively high on levels you can sometimes split it into _three_ groups to figth sephiroth. is that a bug or intended behavior?

The party should always split into three parts to fight Bizarro. I think that's the case anyway, I've never fought him with only one group anyway :)

I've specificly partied against him with only two sometimes, definetly. I've also noticed that sometimes I have three groups:

2 with 3 and one with the extra character.

It's intended behavior. Basically, how well you do in the fight against Jenova ~ SYNTHESIS determines how many parties you get. IIRC, you can have just one party. If it takes you a horribly long time to beat Jenova (say, 10-20 minutes?) you'll just have one party. If it's an even fight (if you take out her tentacles but leave her main body alone until the tentacles come back?), 2 parties. If you sneeze at the start of the battle and she falls over, three parties.
I did a lot of testing on this at one point, but now my memory's fuzzy so I might be wrong. This is just the way I remember it. Anyway, a good way to test it is to give Cloud the Morph Materia. Then, during the battle, only have Cloud attack Jenova, and only let him use Morph. The other characters can be healers. The battle will take awhile because of how little damage you're dealing. Then see if you have one party at the end.
Title: How fast did you beat FFVII?
Post by: Radiosity on 2004-12-25 11:49:19
Ah, that's probably why I always get three parties then. Jenova drops dead with 10 seconds of me entering battle lol Having mastered double cut materias on all three characters will do that :)

When I faught jenova synthisis, I used 1 omnislash to kill her, so
I only had to use 1 party to fight sephiroth.

What I want to know is, how fast people have beaten Emerald
weapon.  The fastest I did it was a little over 6 minutes. And to
do this, I...

Got clouds hp to 7777 (he was the only one i could seem to do
it with)
Got all of my guys limits full (i used cloud, cid, and vincent)
And I mastered enough counter attacks to have 6 on each
character. (the only other materia i had on them was double-cut,
and revive with a final attack, both mastered)

After 3 minutes of constant 7777 attacks cloud stopped and Emerald
attacked for the first time, after which all characters countered ALOT.
Then I used omnislash, highwind, and chaos, and then a few 4x cut,
and a few more counter attacks.  I dont think its possible to do it
much faster.

btw. i've read a document somewhere on the net called something like 'sephiroth-hp-calculation'. it showed how your levels and fight with jenova synthesis influences hp of his bodyparts [it propably influenced safer sephiroth as well, but i'm not sure]. did someone actually verify this?

[it might be on gamefaqs, or i just looked it up on google some time ago]. maybe it's still on my hd somewhere.if anyone's interested i'll try to dig it up.

I think it's a whole bunch of counterattack-mime combos on Barret.
Title: How fast did you beat FFVII?
Post by: halkun on 2004-12-26 23:33:48
Really rough Translation......

First start with only Barret and cloud in your party.
Have barett almost ready for a limit break
Make sure that Cloud has W-Item (Pronounced "Double-Item")
Use Hero Drink (英雄の薬) twice on barret.
The hero drink will push barret's limit over and then select "Anger Max"
Barret: POW! POWPOWPOWPOWPOWPOWPOW!
The emerald weapon will attack back at barret.
Barret has Mime and a maxed Counter linked togeather in two different slots on his weapon. (mime-couter) (mime-counter)
Skip cloud's turn.
On Barret's turn, select "mime" and then select barret.
Anger Max will roll over and over and over again.
Wait 1:18 for emerald to die.

Koreans are worse. Especially with Tekken, Star Craft and a few other titles. All about English anyway... if only we weren't so damn lazy ^^
Like blaytant, I don't see any Japanese heads doing this: http://sircanealotshome.homestead.com/files/10000030.jpg (note: it's a level from Tomb Raider 2, completed in an insanely fast time by a friend of mine, years ago...)

The last time I played FFVII, I tried to zoom through it; I made a few mistakes (like forgetting to set battle speed to max till half way through the game), but I was at about 18 hours at the end of disk 2. So I would have gussed about 22-24 hours.
I guess if I didn't make so many mistakes, I could have done it in under 20.
I've been REALLY tempted recently to dust FFVII off and try again... well, we'll see... ^^

I REALLY don't think 12 hours is possible unless you either, yes, suffer from a bug or go to insane lengths to complete the game fast.

Infact, I wonder what's better for speed play, PC or PSX? I mean, you can skip the movies and stuff on the PSX, but does the timer run while loading? You're going to save seconds here and there since the PC NEVER has to access the slow-ass CD medium while playing...

I would guess that if you were to do it in 12 hours, you would increase the message speed and avoid a lot of battles, but then you would not be able to beat Sephiroth because you would be so weak.
Title: How fast did you beat FFVII?
Post by: Radiosity on 2004-12-27 16:00:09
Hmm, ok, allowing for cheating for a moment, I wonder how fast it would be possible to do the game, if you maxed out every character... There's a lot of dialog and so on to go through, and random battles are of course immensly annoying when you are trying to do something quickly, but even then... I don't think it would be possible in any less than 8-10 hours. And that would be cheating your ass off.

I might try that - it'd be interesting to see how quickly it can be done with super powerful characters, because if it still can't be beaten in less than, say, 10 hours, I'd seriously be of the opinion that 12 hours is simply impossible with normal characters and no time to level up etc..

it would be cool at least to be able to skip movies. since they take a lot of time actually.

and if ff7 had ff8's GF system geez....:D it's possible to beat ff8 even with _avoiding_ leveling up, since you get so much stat boost from magic junctions. and most enemies' levels are scaled to yours.

maybe if someone would invest a lot of effort into stats increasing materia...but that would take a looong time. and getting those stat items is really tough as well.

heh this movie rocks, but still the trick with mimicking KOTR all the time sounds way more awesome :D

Ok, I've decided to test this :) Kinda bored, so it gives me something to do between modelling stuff.

I've given all characters their ultimate weapons (and the next one down for certain characters like Tifa, since Premium Heart is pants unless you keep her on full limit).

Each character has 1 Master Magic, 3 Counterattack, 1 Double Cut (giving 4xCut) 2 HP+ and 2MP+ materias, all mastered. Additionally, each of them has a wizard bracelet and Ribbon.

Limit Breaks are all at either level 3 apart from Tifa who is on level 4.

At the current time, I am just running across the railway bridge towards Corel, before heading to Gold Saucer for the first time. That's taken a little over 3 hours already, running away from almost every random battle and not stopping for any items or being sidetracked by anything.

So, bearing in mind I can easily take out any monster or boss within 10 seconds of the battle starting... and having 9 hours remaining to complete the rest of disk 1, all of disk 2 and disk 3 (north crater), before finally getting to sephiroth... who else thinks this isn't going to happen in under 12 hours? And this is allowing for cheats of course, playing properly would be even less likely.

Well, back to the game :)

Mime + Limits + knights of the round (I if memory serves) freaking rawked hard.  I usually had Cid + Barret + Cloud...and someone always had final strike with pheonix, in case I really messed stuff up.

Fastest time: 4 years ago... about 30 hours.

Best game:  50-60 hrs.

First time through: 75 hrs.

Good stuff.

I think under 20 hours is possible problem been is the normal bosses in the game are too weak, so there is no need to do any real levelling up to get through the game.  The only bosses that pose any challenge is the secret bosses and perhaps sephiroth at the end.

I found the demon wall easy also, its a real shame about the bosses I end up trying to make the fight last by delibateraly using weak moves but still win easily.

I wish they made their stats dependant on your party's hp level so if you had a powerful party then in turn the bosses become powerful.

Aye, I actually took a more harder way of killing Emerald when I didnt know the W-Summon trick...

Just got cloud, vincents, and cid's ultimate weapons and limit breaks, got them to 99, equipped each of them with 3 materia each (might of been 2 actually), and continually got lucky 7's and spammed limit breaks whenever possible. :/

Just for the sake of clearing things up....
To beat the game riddiculusly fast (im not giving a specific time, there are alway's differences in the odds/Exp you get per battle.)

If you concentrate on using cloud and alway's giving him the better weapon, withought leaving the main story, you fly through the first disk in litlle time....(((DISK 1 is the longest disk in my experience)))
Shorter for the second disk (lots of luck to you)

When Ultima weapon flyes out, take an hour or less if your luck is good, and kill him (gets clouds best weapon) and cloud should be a fairly high level just for following the main story, after ultima is dead, grab Slash-all in the forsest and use that. (Do not master it, wasting time, flash no good for bosses anyway.)

When you get to the battles in the end, Eg: bizzaro sephiroth, slash all attacks all the pieces, you should do around 6k dmg or more at this point in the game, and he dies withought ever neading to switch parties etc....

Then summons are also effective, yet they waste time (physical attakcs are best, then have one char always cure if needed), even if you never get bahamut zero (a whole 2 minutes to get him if you followed the main story to a "T" and not miss the huge materia.) I
f you want to spend an extra few minutes, with slash-all, ribbon, and a cold absorbing armor... you can easily get omnislash in half an hour

dont forget, put long range on cloud, and stick him in back row,

this means skip getting vincent and yuffy, speed through the text, dont ever visit fort condor (before huge materia makes you) dont stray from the main story, hell you can avoid most of the treasure chests in the game to! many are wasted footsteps  :P  (why take a minute walking for a potion or  pheonix? they do add up....)

Oh hell.

While it is possible to write a grammatically sound 200 word sentence (http://webster.commnet.edu/grammar/run-on.htm), it doesn't mean that everyone should try writing one. :z

What is so hard to understand about it: if you have the time to type, you have the time to type properly. Dyslexia aside, you do not have an excuse for typing monkey English. It is slow and annoying to read, and can be easily misunderstood.

If people are perfectly capable of using a normal language even on IRC, you should be able to use it on freaking forum, even if you weren't the sharpest tool in the shed.

Isn't it kind of sad that native English speakers seem to be worst writers of English online?

Perhaps thats the problem, people are lazy and dont care.

The way people perceive you has alot to do with the way you write and spell (what you have to say also plays a big role obvsiously) . I think you could atleast try to take a little time just to prevent simple things like making sure you don't scramble the word just.

And ontop of that, how can people take what you have to say seriously when you dont even take writting it seriously?

Just a little insight on the subject. :\

Perhaps off topic but i just thought id say if my posts are a little scrambled and i do not notice or cant fix it it is due to my keyboard playing up. For some reason from time to time some keys decide not to work i think it is the connection from keyboard to the pc that is the problem.

Ive had alot of problems with passwords and usernames trying to sign in and stuff it gets really annoying.

Anyway has anyone finished the game recently? i started but got bored mainly by the bits i always hated. Don't you just hate the start going through midgar i always have.

Pffft. Doesn't even use any colons or semicolons :P

Edit: I actually checked an essay I wrote where I used long sentencing... but it turned out the sentance was only 60 words long... bleh.
And that sentance is really boring. I can't read it after the first couple of lines...
Whoever wrote that should be slapped.

Punctuation is your friend; that includes the sentence delimiter, or "dot". While certainly not to be overused either, a lack of it produces sentences so wide your brain can't keep the entire meaning in focus at once. A well-crafted balance of punctuation and sentence style keeps your message clear and easy to read, something everyone on this forum is highly encouraged to strive for.

Oh, and Jari may be a bit of a typing Nazi, but consider him a good measure of the quality of your posts. If you write posts he can't complain about (well, form-wise at least), you're on the right track. You also get the added benefit of people actually understanding what you say.

I'll note that in short-term memory, people generally have 5, 7 or 9 memory slots.
This means you have up to 9 places to store information.
However, people 'chunk' (I think that's what it's called) things. So home telephone number, when you re-call it, will take up one slot, as it is one object in your long-term memory.
So, therefore, if your sentance grammar is sound and normal, each clause (part of the sentance) won't take up more than one or two slots (or at least that's how it is for me: I can't claim to generalise my ability to everyone else; not everyone else spends so much time browsing writen text :P), so, more than 5 clauses seriously pushes it.

Anyway, just some random information I thought related to this topic... Don't really have any big reason behind posting it. Maybe I just wanted to show off my 'C' at AS Psychology...? ^_^

A week isnt enough time  :x

I love the game. It makes me fight and suffer for everything, from getting enough gil to get a piece of armor, to unlocking new missions for my country. Thats why I never feel bad for the ones who quit, they cant take the challenge. But if you're willing to actually work hard and earn everything you get, it's the most rewarding game ever.

I don't like games like FFXI or WoW either it pisses me off when they deliver all these nice games and then decide to pull this crap out. But that's because i hate online only games.

I don't mind a bit of online play but that being my only option it just sucks.

Grammar police on patrol.

Quote from: A Good 200-Word Sentence
…eye-popping leap that they were capable of a few years ago…

Should be “…eye-popping leap that of which they were capable a few years ago…”.

Lieron, you and I are complete opposites.
While I type quickly, I actually take the time to proofread what I have written, with extra care to be perfectly grammatically correctilly.

It may be a forum (or a chat room [and yes, I type like this there, too, and have been banned for it many times]) but there is no excuse for laziness or sloppy typing.

People say, “Oh, I only type like slop when I am online, but if it is official, I type properly,” but why is it that when I read their “official” typing, it’s still slop?

Well, maybe it does not matter to anyone else, but at least I know I am putting forth my best effort to produce the highest quality work of which I am capable, regardless of significance.

My own question here what's with this ; I don't remember this being part of grammer and what not. Your'e also flaming him and i don't see him doing the same to you so it's a bit uncalled for. Calling him a loser isn't going to get him to listen any better either.

Yuh, I think it took me over 100 hours to complete it. I was recommended the game by my Dad, and recommended I use a guide to gain full enjoyment of the game. That meant the only thing I didn't get in the game was the summon Typhoon and my game wouldn't let my beat the Ruby or Emerald weapons. Unfortunate, I know......but, if you're gonna get everything, and really anjoy it, i.e. chocobo racing and battle square, then it should take well over 100 hours.....

it simple to get Typhoon, it at Acient Forest, the place where ultima weapon crashed and exploded on Comso Canyon
