Title: ATI All-in-wonder 128
Post by: Sukaeto on 2001-04-07 20:47:00
Has anyone here ever owned one?  If so, what were your experiences with it?  Good? Bad?

I'm building a computer for my uncle, and that's the Video card I'm looking at, but I'm still open to suggestions if anyone has a better idea.  (Looking for a good all around chipset that isn't too expensive, but isn't a cheap piece of junk, either.)

If it helps, here are the prospective CPU and Motherboard:

A-BIT KT7 133 (Definitely want a good Motherboard)
AMD Duron 800 (Good proccessor, not too expensive.)

Thanx guys.

Don't know about that ... but my card is a Savage 4 and if you're on a budget that's a good buy. The 16MB AGP version is £30 (about $40), has good DirectX and OpenGL support, and supports a *lot* of options - multitexturing, oversampling, texture compression, etc.

ive got a card with the same chip on it (ati rage fury!) and DONT buy it! its well outdated (voodoo32 2000 time) and you are better off going for ati all in wonder pro (ati rage pro chip, 32mb) or ati all in wonder radeon (radeon chip, 32 mb i think) thats if u want a all in one card (tv,dvd, etc) if u just want a card to fill the machine go for a savage like fices or a geforce2MX or even a riva TNT M64(vanta)

The Skillster: Hey, do you know anything about nVidia Vantas? My family just got a new computer (HP Pavillion, not exactly what I wanted, but it seems ok compared to something like a Compaq system) and it's got an 8MB Nvidia Vanta. Just wondering if you knew anything. I can find a few drivers for it and stuff, but I've never heard of it before.

srethron:
if its based on the riva vanta (m64 whateva) then check it out at nvidias site and use the detonators
they r a cheaper tnt2 (64bit) but still get all the advantages in the detonnators

They got an 8meg vanta? I though those Peice of crap cards only came in 32megs.

lol   :D
sorry about getting the chip names wrong and stuff, i didnt know much about nVidia before their tnt ultras   :D it was more voodoo for me . but i have to add if u want pure gaming COMPATIBILITY then maybe a voodoo4/5 might be good if u find the right price? its not one for geforce type speed but its got nice image quality and fsaa and GREAT overall compatibility (like one of the few cards with FULL 8-bit palleted textures!). man i had a voodoo banshee but like i bought the ati rage fury and i was thinking, "whats the point"? they were very close gaming wise   :(
but im stalling for my next card! the geforce3 has appeared and im waiting for g2 ans radeon price drops   :D who knows radeon 2 will be out Quater3? hehehe
edit: the graphics card market is a DANGEROUS place to put your money, even more so when buying a card! u got to look for the best price/performance ratio or youve wasted it all (kind of) oh isnt a geforce ultra a pumped (overclocked) geforce 2 gts? i thought so  :D

You may want to try a card based on the KyroII chipset. It uses tile based rendering like what the Sega Dreamcast uses. It is "smart" rendering compared to Geforce/Voodoo style rendering. The 64MB version only costs $150 US. The performance is between Geforce2MX and Geforce2 GTS level, but in some benchmarks, it beats a Geforce2 Ultra. If I didn't have a Voodoo5 already, I would go for this.

Actually, he's not into gaming.  I was just looking for an inexpensive card that wasn't a piece of junk.

The card'll be pretty much for 'work and other productive use', as Jari put it.  The good image quality and DVD playback might be a good thing, too.

Well my old card readsVanta/Tnt2m64 on the top of the card?

On the Geforce subject you should try and go for the Geforce2 GTS. I hear the MXs can be pretty slow....

GeForce II MX is cheap (3d Prophet II MX 32mb is a GREAT, CHEAP card) and the ATI RAEDON is almost identical and slightly cheaper. www.pricewatch.com  if you don't know already.

The Skillster: Thanks for the info.

Sir Canealot: Actually, I was wrong and it's 16 MB. Still not that great, though.  :(

Jari: Thanks for the info. I guess it figures that HP would throw in a cheap card. The whole package cost about $2500 (included monitor/printer), so I'd that really bites. I wish for that price I could get a better card. I haven't bothered to open it up and look inside yet, but I'm pretty sure it's one of those machines that has an upper 100s MHz power supply soldered into the case (and the Vanta's probably similarly connected to the motherboard). It's a P3 733 with 128 MB RAM.

Heh heh . . .

My uncle called 'bout a week ago and told me he decided he didn't want a computer right now.  He said his work might be getting one for him.

I'm still going to the show (which just so happens to be tomorrow) so I can get more RAM, possibly a new power supply, another case fan, and (a legal copy of) Windows 2000 Pro.
