Title: FF7 - Music Reloaded Project
Post by: Elentor on 2005-07-18 22:54:32
Hi people. Well this is the last of the three projects I planned originally to waste my free time with.

This is, again, a very personal project, which I'm doing for myself, and am releasing because I believe there will be at least one person in the world who will like it, so please, avoid comments like "Omg lol it sucks" or "completely unuseful". If you don't like, don't download, I just ask that.

Since it's a personal project and devoid of responsability, since I'm doing it for myself and my own pleasure, I can guarantee with 98% sure that I will finish it. The other 2 percents includes, but are not limited to:

1) If I suffer amnesia
2) If I lose my hands or anything else that allow me to keep with the project
3) If I die
4) If someone pays me an enormous ammount of money asking me to stop it.
5) All of the above
6) None of the above

So, in other words, there is a big chance I will eventually finish the *coughcough94musicscoughcough* which will waste an ungodly amount of space in my server, but this is life.

In case you haven't guessed what this project is yet, is basically my "high-quality" versions of some FF7 musics. Now, in case you didn't read the first paragraph and say "lol man you could just download some cool soundfonts" I must say that sure, this would be no problem, but I do not believe much into using soundfonts directly because:

1)It wastes too much RAM on my computer, and he is about 99% of the day using it for 3D Rendering.
2)It won't give me the effect I like.

I just noticed I love making lists. Because of this list-fetish and, in case any of you wonder, here is the process of making these musics:

1) I open the midi in Guitar Pro to analyze the composition easily because of the layout.
2) I then load it in Sonar, and add the necessary loops in the midi
3) I load up the soundfonts I'm going to use, assign them to each instrument and start a process of playing and pausing adjusting the volumes and levels.
4) I put the effects like Reverb, Equalization and configure them individually for each instrument.
5) I configure the master volume and record it in maximum quality in the standard Windows' Sound Recorder, saving it as a wav.
6) Load it on Soundforge 8.0 and add the final equalization, normalize and add the final polishments.

I was kinda undecided if I posted here or not, but now after five musics done I think there is nothing really evil in it:

Well, i for one have nothing against it, and since its more for your own personal pleasure, whateer anyone else thinks is "mweh" to you, i'm sure.

However, i feel the need to voice some concerns, if you don't mind some constructive critisism.  The Opening bomb mission, for instance.  The piano is FAR too dissonant, and there's an occasion "DUUNN" that sounds like a really, really off-key 8-bit piano sound  I'd tone both those things down.  The rest sounds damn good though.  Parts of "Fighting" seem too faint/quiet, but other than that, i love what ya did with it =)

I don't think i'll be Dling your full set, but this is definatly cool =)

Unless you will be trying to put these in game, this topic belong to General forum, I think.

Apart of that, Anxious Heart sounds great, congratulations! Fighting is very good too, but as EmperorSteele said - it's too loud in some parts. And other are also good. Keep up the good work!

M4V3R: These can count as "soundfonts" for that matter, since you can load them to play during the game thanks to a patch.
Thanks for your comment, though! ^^

Emperor: I'm always open to constructive criticism, since I'm not perfect.
I will try changing the piano in the Opening Bomb or testing it with different configurations, so far.

I think the problem with "Fighting" are the drums. My DVD with some drum soundfonts, including the Drum Series from Sonic Implants (which was my personal favorite... I hadn't bought the new Yamaha Drums yet), was scratched. I had to use instead the Blue Jays, which I don't like much since they are too low and way too calm.
Once I get a new Drum Session Series again, I think this problem will be solved. Too bad my credit card is already on the limit this month.

Thanks

Interrupted by fireworks next, please :D I'm interested to hear what you're going to do with it.

Couple of crits:

Bomb Mission. The main piano is too in your face, as has already been mentioned, other than that I liked it. The other instruments could do wiith a bit of a boost, but toning that piano down a bit would likely help there.

Mako Reactor. Love this one, retains the original dark style with nice enhancements to the instruments. Thumbs up on this :)

Fighting. Hmm... as the single most played piece of music in the entire game, I'd have to say I'd probably turn the music off after a while I'm afraid. Not keen on this at all, way too much reverb for my tastes, particularly on the hihats. The trumpets sound really flat compared to the original, I think they could really do with a bit more power. Lastly, the hihats seem to go out of sync at some points, which is most likely due to the amount of reverb, but they're also quite loud so tend to stand out too much amongst the other instruments.

Shinra. The drums seem very weak, but since you've already mentioned your lack of decent drum samples at the moment I won't comment further on them :) Otherwise, again I like what you've done... with one big exception: the bells. They are badly out of tune with the rest of the song and IMHO desperately need fixing.

Anxious Heart. Two big thumbs up on this one, love it :D Retains the sad and slightly creepy feel with very nice enhancements, particularly the piano sections. Nice job indeed.

Can't wait to hear more of your remixes.

Wow, how much feedback. Makes me happy.

Soldier: Many thanks.
ice_cold513: Thanks too, I will be doing them
Sui: Makou ended up as my favorite too, I hope I can make another remix as good as it.
Marcis: Strange, I'll try playing on WMP later.
Leiw: Thanks
naji: Who knows, someday I may do a remix like that...  :wicked:
Radiosity: Hah, I'll do that next. Your crits were the most constructive until now, many thanks.

I would like to say I just finished Sephiroth's theme. I hope you guys enjoy as much as I enjoyed making it. It can download there:

Tempo's a little quick on that last one, doantcha think?
Title: FF7 - Music Reloaded Project
Post by: Elentor on 2005-07-21 04:52:49
It's exactly the same, with no difference or alterations as the original, since it was based off on the midis that came with the game.

Unless you're trying to say that the total time of the music is very quick. In this case it wouldn't be the tempo, but yea, the song is kinda quick because it's just one riff repeating.

Cheers

I LIKE the Sephiroth one!  It sounds a lot creepier and more tense than the original, probably just becasue of the instruments used.  Best one so far, IMO =)

Two files I did a WHILE ago. Meant to be the bones of an oC ReMix.

If anyone remembers (Goku), I had a bunch of stuff I was looking at on how to improve the music...these are just redone files with the MIDI note data, though.

Original:
http://elentor.com/Outros/Amphitere/VincentTheme.mp3

Newer Version (Doesn't sound so good in PLII music surround. Sounds better in movie mode. Sounds best in Stereo, which most of you are probally using):

oC ReMix is about arrangements, though. This is about improving the basic, original files. The first one I posted is just a redo with the original MIDI Data, the second one is closer to a ReMix, but I abandoned it.

Post by: Elentor on 2005-07-26 22:22:24
NeoS: Uh, did you read the first post? Kojiro said about everything, but let me give a more complete answer...

Well, since the author is me, by "guys" I picture out everybody in this forum. I hope nobody ever decides to post this on OCremix, or they would laugh at me very bad. This definitely is not on the standard OCremix quality. Even if it were, like Kojiro stated, this is not an arrangement, and OCremix would give to any music here a NO OVERRIDE.

There are three reasons why I am not going to bother any of the artists at OCremix, which are:
1) This is not an arrangement, they have no reason to waste their time with it.
2) Like I stated, this is a personal project. I don't need any help for what would be doing exactly what I'm willing to do.... nor would KojiroTakenashi, for that matter.
3) I'm not a professional musician, and this is just a hobbie, so I don't really care about producing something "big", if you know what I mean.

About your musics... I think I've heard this drum before. KeyArdency? Well, anyway.
I didn't like the Bombing Mission either. Cid is nice, so is the Fighting theme, but the string fails sometimes, almost like the tones are out of range.
Also, I would like to know: Why the musics have big empty spaces when they finish? I just got curious.

About my remixes: I just finished Interrupted and Jenova Battles. Interrupted is already recorded, but Jenova not, and I won't be able to record it so soon because I'm currently rendering a *big* 3D image (1600*1280, 1.700.000 polygons, HDRI + 30 lights, over 40 textures of about 1600*1200 resolutions, you picture out) on my crappy Athlon XP 2100+ @1700, which means my computer cannot afford any other process than the render, which might take about three days.

If someone wants to donate a better CPU (who knows, perhaps there are rich people here) to me, thanks (I hope someone take it seriously..)

Cheers

I feel your pain dude :) Rendering a big scene + lights and stuff takes way too long on mid-range pc's. My new rig will be better suited to it however, when I finally manage to get enough money together to build the damn thing, heh.

Looking forward to hearing Interrupted :D

the spaces... it's a bug in FL i guess.

A bit too sharp, imo, otherwise good.
What samples are you using? And which program?

Anyway, I did another two musics, like I said.

Interrupted by Fireworks (http://elentor.com/Projetos/FF7-Music%20Reloaded/Elentor%20-%20Interrupted.mp3)

Jenova (http://elentor.com/Projetos/FF7-Music%20Reloaded/Elentor%20-%20Jenova.mp3)

Using some free soundfonts in FL Studio 5.

What is too sharp? the piano? i can tweak it some more if you want.
The harp in interrupted sounds good. I need a good harp soundfont too.

J*e*n*o*v*a sounds a bit too different... however, it sounds very alien, and therefore, appropriate.  The horns are a bit too quiet though, and there's some parts that seem to have been diffused or cut.  Like at 1:57, there should be a louder horn coming in at the end of the drums.  but it's all low and flat.  8shrugs*

Inturupted sounds VERY nice and almost 100% like the orignal... but, i don't think you need the actual firework sounds in there =)  the FMV supplies those sound effects ^_^
Title: FF7 - Music Reloaded Project
Post by: Elentor on 2005-07-30 13:29:11
Heh, I liked the firework sounds. My FF7 doesn'tplay the FMV sounds, anyway, don't ask me why. So I never knew there were actual fireworks sounds on the fmvs (last time I played the PSX version was some years ago).

The horns sounds good here, but it might be my own sound equipment. I don't know what kind of equipment you use, but if more than one people think it is low, then it probably is low.

By the way, Jenova is my personal favorite until now, because I really wanted it to sound alien, and because I finally managed to record in layers in Sonar 3, which gave me more control.
There are still not as many flangers and chorus effects as I have planned initially, but I think it sounds nice the way it is. Specially the bass (long live the subwoofer)

First of all, we're not "remixing" the FF7 tracks. We're re-sequencing them with better instruments. That's a big difference.

EDIT: Listening many times the "boss music", I noticed that the guitars could be more louder, and maybe a bit sharper. What do you think?
EDIT2: I also downloaded the Jenova, sounds odd, maybe because the timing differs a bit from original version?

Great jobs guys!

Check out my stuff if it's still there when you read this... I use Melody Assistant, that uses high quality real instrument recording samples to generate it's digital music. It reads midi, but uses it's own playback. I personally feel it's a godsend, it just kicks a$$!

Yes. I own both of their cd's. And, no, their first album is not just FF7 music, it spans across all the FF's that Nobuo composed.

Ehm, piracy isn't a good thing to discuss here.
Secondly, "The Black Mages" is led by Nobuo Uematsu, original composer of most Final Fantasy tracks.

Next time, do your homework a bit before posting.
Thank you.. that means I don't have to point that out.

Hmm, well you're right, but the site said that I can download, if I delete the files in 24 hourse
No. You can't actually. Piracy is piracy. About the only thing that has that "rule of thumb" of which you speak of 24 hours then delete, would be NES/SNES roms and things of that era.. why? Nintendo isn't making money off of NES/SNES anymore. It's outdated technology. But even then you still have to watch it, cuz it's still considered piracy, just the company tends to not care too much.

I could swear that I remember reading in some law manual that products no longer supported by the maker or offered on the market (obsolete was one of the words used, I think) are okay to distribute.  Of course, I have no idea where I read that.

[off topic]

That is generally true.. but you still get sites sometimes that get in hot water for offering older ROM's.

But, this brings up an interesting point though, DreamCast for example. CD ISO's. It's no longer supported by SEGA, and hasn't been supported for a while.. but is it okay to distribute the games? For some reason, no. You can legally distribute "Homebrew" games.. but not official DC games. But, in the same sense, the "Homebrew" scene of the DC is very popular and still going. A lot of the games rival if not beat the games that were officially made for DC. In Japan, the Homebrew scene (3rd party) has games being made constantly. The DC is still very big in Japan, which is no surprise considering that it was waaaay more powerful than the PSX, and waay more flexible. SEGA did things right if you ask me... such a shame that they don't make consoles... :(

[/off topic]

So, this might sound like a dumb question, but, from what I have looked at, I still don't quite understand how the FF7Music program works.. and am not at a point where I can test it for myself. Can anyone explain..? And, on that note, can anyone explain maybe why the MP3 looping isn't enabled in it..? *shrugs* just a thought/question..

Oh, and btw, I do really dig these songs everyone has made. Even for what they are, they sound awesome.

This seems the best place to ask this.

how would i go about switching out tracks on the FF7? I want to swap out some tracks of the game w/ tracks off the Black Mages albums and the FF7:AC OST.(Black Water for the Turks is a MUST)

Eleantor, I like the fact that you have improved the Shinra music, did a great job enhancing it will basically keeping it the same, but you've cut out the opening notes at the beginning, and that means that when Shinra stuff turns up in the game it will be rather shocking and unsubtle. ;)  Would be great if you put those opening bars back into the music.

First post round these parts. I stumbled across this gold mine last night and have been very impressed by all the work that's been going on. Some major skillls are possessed by people on this forum! Anyway, I love the idea of resequencing the soundtrack (thankyou Fidedula :D) and thought I might be able to contribute some. It seems that this project is down a bit but I'm sure it can be picked up with a bit of a push. Which I'm willing to help with :p Anyway, I've literally slapped these tracks together. I can definitely post more and quickly if anyone wishes it!

I was under the impression that the people posting work in this thread have worked on these music arrangements themselves, so I'm going to hazard a guess that simply using copyrighted material wouldn't bode well for a freely distributed music mod, at least for Bombing Mission which flashes up Copyright Square Enix - Dear Friends Final Fantasy Orchestra Concert, Los Angeles 2005. I'll assume I've just misunderstood your intentions and that you weren't trying to pass it off as your own, but still, as such, it's not usable for a music mod.

No no, definitely not trying to pass them off as my own. Um, that wouldn't anyone, clearly. I wasn't aware that this thread was about music for a mod, but rather I assumed it just about submitting potential alternatives the PSFs for people. As for the Bombing Mission track, I suspected that might come under fire and I can remove it.

What I don't understand is why everyone would prefer to mess around with mp3s, which don't loop and have that unbearable silence before they repeat, than just replacing soundfonts for the MIDIs.  I don't know what everyone's final plans are but I think they should head in the MIDI direction.

Not all computers support soundfonts, and they can be considerably trickier to implement. For an MP3, all you have to do is sequence something in FL Studio or your program of choice.
