My system specs are AMD 3700+ 6800GT 2 gig ram.
My problem is that my computer fails the 8-bit textures test and I can only run FF 7/8 with software mode which is incredibly slow. Well I was hoping if someone could help, thanks.
Mod Edit: Moved to Game tweaking

I'm guessing you're using XP, then you'll need the FF7 1.02 patch. Since it was a '97 game, today's computers aren't 100% compatible. (Unless you get the right patches that is). I suggest getting the 1.02 patch. I'm not sure for 6800GT though.
FF7 Minimum System Requirements:
Windows 95 compatible system
DirectX 5.0
Intel Pentium 133 (recommended Pentium 200)
4 megs Video Card (8 megs 3D accelerator recommended)
32 megs of RAM
4x CD-ROM
DirectX 5.0 compatible sound card (AWE64 or XG-MIDI compatible
recommended)

It's odd that software mode should run so slow.

I did upgrade, but didn't really help. I did try this riva tuner thing though. I went to directx to enable 8-bit, but theres only 8 bit surfaces, but not 8 bit textures. Are they the same? Either way, enabling 8 bit surfaces does not work either...

It seems another person had the same problem with the same Graohic card.
Check it out.

I just got to know that it's hardware problem and pretty much impossible to get it to work :(

I don't remember the effects of FF8 and the 8 bit pallet.
But with FF7, the TNT patch is really an 8 bit pallet bypass patch. Just use that patch, check the Nvidia TNT box...and you should see something happen. Unless you get a layering problem. My PCI-E 6600GT shows FF7PC, alright, though.
Don't know what it does with FF8PC....haven't bothered with it...the video card, I mean....not the TNT patch...

Man,, I have this same video card with an athlon64 3200+:
The FFVII with the 1.02 patch works perfectly ( including with "Reunion" and "The Saint" patches). FSAA 4x max though.
The FFVIII didn't work and I believe it won't ( i have no optimism left.. :D ).
Good luck.
