Y'know, this isn't my specialty, but I think it might be possible that FF7 might not play well with 64bit processors. Could anyone here who knows about that sort of thing confirm or deny?
I say that because if the game is loading the intro screens like that, it's much more likely to be a hardware/driver conflict than a patch/pure software one. The first thing people are told to try is a reinstall, but if that isn't working it looks like your system is (at least for the moment) incompatible.
Have you tried turning on compatibility mode for the .exe?

compat set to win98/se, disable visual themes and turn off adv. text services for this program. still no change in the state
yeah i tried a reinstall of the game from the discs but to no avail *sobs in the corner*
note: im runing the 32bit windows xp sp2

The "messy" screen you are talking about:
Mine does that too, but everything else works fine.
You may want to try messing around with the settings of your Video card.. that's the only thing I can think of..

I can tell you know that having a 64 bit processor does nothing to the game, it runs perfectly for me.
That is, unless you are running windows 64?

this is what ver 1.00 looks like
http://rapier.digital-euphoria.net/~ecchijunky/images/ver1.0.jpg
clean install too
nv det. drivers are 78.01 off the nvidia site
and no im not using xp 64 only the 32 ver
im drawing blanks still :(

I got those "messy" results you mentioned in the first post when I took a look at that infamous Megapatch someone compiled without asking. I didn't like it, and couldn't get it to work properly.
Have you considered completely clearing the Squaresoft directory and any patch files existing on your computer, then installing the CD original and only updating to 1.02? Because on my system, that messy intro screen is being caused by conflicting patchery.

no differance at all, iv even reinstalled windows xp and installed vista b1 jus to see if it was xp 32 causing a prob but no avil, i can only put it down to the fact that i have a piece of hard ware that it does not like as it used to work on my p4 2.4gig w/ gf4 ti 4800 (no longer have as i sold it)
any else using the asus en6600gt/td ?? with asus a8n sli deluxe mobo??
looks like i cant play the game no more on my pc :( an i dun have the psx ver of the game
all i can do is hope that SQE remake FFVII for the ps3, nice tech demo for it tho

Hi, if u're running the game at version 1.00, u can't enable the nvidia TNT mode, I get the black screen showing the red arrows and Cloud too if I do that. Instead, use software rendering if you want to play at version 1.00. FMVs will play at a lagged pace though.
Try using the official 1.02 patch then enable the Nvidia TNT option. Also, if you have RIVAtuner, enable the options for 8 bit palettes and don't try to go beyond 8 FSAA/Anistropy. I get the funny segmented screen when I do that with my card. I'm using a 6600GT on 71.89 drivers by the way.
Hope this helps.

seems theres something that ver 1.02 definatly does not like, 1.00 in s/w mode works after a funge or two nout all happens in sw mode in 1.02 'cept for the spontainious crash/error msg and in hardware i get all that up there ^
so im at a total loss
Larken: nice tool that 8bit is already enabled by default tho, also both AA/AF are app controlled basiclly off >_>
bah.... this is leaving me in a dark room with an oil lamp w/o a match to light it

Dude, can I know which option you used after using the 1.02 patch?
[X]Nvidia (O)RIVA (O)TNT
From what I've tried, I've been able to replicate the messy screen that's your first picture by choosing RIVA. Also, black screens when I'm in town. Choose TNT and give it another shot.
Note: If 1.02 is not used, both RIVA and TNT will give you the same black screen.
