ah, i just got the car thingey, and i read that laser can be learned while you're still in the previous area. is there a way to get back there and learn laser or do i really have to wait until the end of the game? oh well, guess it makes the game that much harder :)

Yeah I think you can only learn laser from the Death Claw in the Desert Prison. Oh, and I think you can learn it from the Midgar Zolom aswell. But I guess you're past both them points now!

Well.... if you got the buggy you can backtrack all the way to Midgar, if you want. Just drive into that city (what was it? Casa something or other), take the cargo ship back to the other continent, and when you exit the buggy should be parked outside.
This is how early you get that item for Aeris' final Limit Break, BTW. You can use the Buggy to cross that stream and talk to that sleeping guy. The final two numbers on the No. of battles, must be equal (divisible by 11) before he will give you that.....(umm.....I forget) item.
You can also visit that Condor place and fight the next wave of bad guys.... There is a new wave of them after every major scene, I guess.

You can't get back into Midgar without the key, which you can't get 'till after you have your boat, if I remember correctly (unless you're refering to a enemy that's outside midgar that has laser, which wouldn't surprise me).

As far as I know, the only learnable skill the Midgar Zolom has is Beta. Definately not Laser AFAIK. I know that the Death Claw has it, and the Dark Dragon in the Northern Crater. You can't get it before Corel Prison.
